Jellyfin does not turn an ordinary media playlist into a 24-hour channel by itself. The reliable setup is to use a virtual-channel scheduler such as Tunarr or ErsatzTV to create the linear feed, playlists, program order, and schedule rules, then add that feed to Jellyfin as a Live TV tuner and import the scheduler’s XMLTV guide.
In this arrangement, the scheduler decides what plays and when; Jellyfin supplies the client-facing Live TV interface, channel list, guide, and playback. You need to configure both the channel feed and the guide data, then test the result with the Jellyfin clients your household actually uses.
How the Jellyfin channel architecture works
A scheduled Jellyfin channel has three separate parts:
- Media source: Your Jellyfin libraries or files that contain movies, episodes, music, collections, and other playable media.
- Virtual-channel scheduler: Tunarr or ErsatzTV turns that media into a continuous channel feed. It applies playlists, schedule items, playback order, start behavior, and program metadata.
- Jellyfin Live TV: Jellyfin connects to the scheduler as a tuner and reads an XMLTV guide so the channel appears with current and upcoming programs.
Jellyfin’s own playlists are collections for on-demand playback. They do not, by themselves, provide fixed-time playout, a continuously generated channel stream, or an electronic program guide. If you want a channel that plays a movie at 8 p.m., a sequence of episodes afterward, and another block overnight, put those rules in the scheduler.

What you need before creating a channel
- A working Jellyfin server with the libraries you want to schedule.
- A separate installation of Tunarr or ErsatzTV that can access those libraries.
- A scheduler channel with an M3U or HDHomeRun-style tuner endpoint.
- An XMLTV guide endpoint generated by the scheduler.
- Network access from the Jellyfin server to both endpoints.
- A short test lineup and at least one Jellyfin client for transition testing.
You do not need a physical HDHomeRun tuner for a software-generated channel. HDHomeRun-style refers to the connection method exposed by a scheduler. Conventional broadcast television may use an actual tuner, but that is a different use case.
Media access choices
ErsatzTV can use Jellyfin for media streaming or stream directly from disk. Direct disk streaming requires ErsatzTV to see the same paths as Jellyfin, or to have path replacements configured when the two applications use different mount points. ErsatzTV also documents one-way metadata synchronization from Jellyfin, so changes made in Jellyfin flow into the scheduler rather than becoming a two-way library-management system.
Tunarr supports Jellyfin as a media source. Tunarr uses FFmpeg to normalize channel video and audio streams and to interleave flex content. The setup documentation reviewed lists FFmpeg 6.1 as the minimum known supported version and 7.1.1 as the recommended version at that time; check Tunarr’s current setup documentation before installing because version guidance can change.

Choose ErsatzTV when you need explicit playlist-level controls, EPG visibility, or sequential schedules with reusable instructions. Choose Tunarr when its channel workflow and Jellyfin media-source integration fit your lineup, especially if you can use its recommended HDHomeRun-style connection. In either case, test the actual Jellyfin clients before committing to a large channel lineup.
Build the channel in the scheduler
1. Connect your Jellyfin libraries
- In the scheduler, add Jellyfin as the media source or connect the libraries that contain the files you want to use.
- For ErsatzTV disk streaming, compare the paths shown by Jellyfin with the paths visible to ErsatzTV. Add path replacements if the applications use different prefixes.
- Allow metadata synchronization or library scanning to finish before creating schedule items.
- Confirm that a sample movie and episode can be opened by the scheduler. A channel cannot play media that the scheduler cannot resolve.
2. Create a channel
- Create a virtual channel and give it a stable name and channel number.
- Choose the channel’s media source and configure the scheduler’s stream-processing settings.
- Save the channel before adding a complex schedule. This gives you a basic feed to test later.
3. Add playlists or shows as programming
In ErsatzTV, a playlist is an ordered list that can include collections, shows, episodes, movies, music, and other media. A playlist can itself be used as a schedule item. For each playlist, choose the playback order that matches the intended channel behavior:

- Chronological: Use when dates or chronology should determine order.
- Shuffle: Use for a changing mix rather than a predictable sequence.
- Random: Use when the next item should be selected randomly.
- Show ordering: For series, use the available season and episode ordering instead of treating every episode as an unrelated item.
Turn on Play All when the scheduler should remain on one playlist item until all of that item’s media has played. For example, a playlist containing a complete season can finish its selected run before the schedule advances. Use Show In EPG to decide whether the scheduled media is exposed as program entries in Jellyfin’s electronic program guide.
4. Define schedule behavior
ErsatzTV classic schedules control how schedule items are consumed. Relevant options include:
- Keeping multipart episodes together.
- Treating collections as shows.
- Shuffling schedule items.
- Choosing a random start point.
- Playing one or more items from each collection before moving to the next collection.
Use these settings deliberately. A random start point can prevent every viewer from entering a long playlist at its first item, while keeping multipart episodes together prevents a multipart story from being split by unrelated content.
Shuffle has an important scheduling consequence: ErsatzTV’s documentation says it disables fixed start times and flood mode. Do not combine shuffle with a plan that requires a particular program to begin at an exact clock time.
5. Use sequential schedules for explicit playout logic
Sequential schedules, formerly described in the documentation as YAML schedules or playouts, are suited to repeatable channel logic. They define content sources, reusable sequences, reset instructions, and playout instructions. A sequential design is useful when you need a known sequence such as an opening block, a repeating episode group, a movie block, and a reset at a specified point.

Keep the sequence readable and test it with a short set of media first. A complicated schedule can fail because a source is empty, a path is invalid, or a reset instruction occurs earlier than expected. Resolve those issues before adding the full library.
Expose the scheduler to Jellyfin
1. Find the feed and guide endpoints
Copy the scheduler’s M3U or HDHomeRun-style tuner address and its XMLTV guide address. Use the exact addresses shown by the scheduler, including the correct host, port, path, and protocol. The tuner feed carries channel playback; XMLTV carries channel names, program titles, and times.
2. Add the tuner in Jellyfin
- Open the Jellyfin Dashboard.
- Go to Live TV and add a tuner device.
- Choose the connection type that matches the scheduler. For an ErsatzTV M3U setup, select the M3U tuner and enter the scheduler’s M3U URL. Tunarr supports M3U and HDHomeRun-style connections and generally recommends HDHomeRun style.
- Save the tuner and wait for Jellyfin to discover the channels.
Jellyfin’s M3U tuner accepts either a local file or a URL. It also exposes optional settings for a user agent, simultaneous stream limit, and automatic looping. Use a simultaneous-stream limit when you need to prevent the scheduler or server from being overloaded; enable looping only when it matches the behavior expected by the feed.
3. Add the XMLTV guide provider
- In the Jellyfin Live TV settings, add an XMLTV guide-data provider.
- Enter the scheduler’s XMLTV URL.
- Save or refresh the guide data.
- Map the guide channels to tuner channels if Jellyfin does not associate them automatically.
Jellyfin documents XMLTV and Schedules Direct as guide-provider options, but says they cannot currently be used together. A generated channel normally uses the scheduler’s XMLTV feed, so adding a second guide provider is not required for that channel.
4. Confirm channel and guide alignment
Open Jellyfin’s Live TV view and check that the channel number, channel name, current program, and next program agree with the scheduler. If the channel appears without programs, the tuner feed may be working while the XMLTV URL or channel mapping is wrong. If programs appear but playback fails, troubleshoot the stream or media path rather than the guide.

Schedule playlists for specific times
To create a clock-based lineup, use schedule items with fixed start times where your scheduler supports them, and avoid settings that make start times nondeterministic. A practical pattern is:
- Create a playlist for each programming block, such as a morning episode block, an afternoon movie block, or an overnight collection.
- Set the playlist’s playback order and decide whether Play All should keep the block together.
- Place the playlists in the channel schedule in the required order.
- Assign fixed start times only to schedule behavior that preserves them. In ErsatzTV, shuffle disables fixed start times.
- Choose whether each item should appear in the EPG with Show In EPG.
- Run the schedule for several transitions before publishing it to viewers.
If exact clock times are less important than variety, use shuffle or a random start point and treat the guide as an estimate of the next scheduled item. If exact times are essential, use ordered or sequential logic, keep multipart content together where needed, and avoid randomization in the portions of the schedule that must remain fixed.
Test playback and program transitions
A channel that looks correct in a guide can still fail at the moment one program ends and the next begins. Test the complete path:
- Open the channel in the Jellyfin web client.
- Open it in each television, mobile, or streaming client used by your viewers.
- Start playback near a program boundary and let the transition occur naturally.
- Check that the next program starts without a frozen frame, an audio-only segment, or a dropped connection.
- Verify that the guide advances to the program that is actually playing.
- Repeat the test with a movie-to-episode transition and an episode-to-episode transition.
Tunarr’s Jellyfin documentation reports that some users have seen stability problems at program boundaries with M3U when Jellyfin is not transcoding or remuxing the incoming stream. This is a documented caveat, not a universal failure. If your client fails at transitions, try the HDHomeRun-style connection where available, test with Jellyfin’s transcoding or remuxing settings, and compare results on the affected client.

Troubleshoot the most common failures
The channel is missing from Live TV
- Confirm that the tuner URL is reachable from the Jellyfin server, not only from your desktop browser.
- Check that the scheduler channel is enabled and has at least one playable schedule item.
- For an M3U feed, confirm that the playlist contains valid channel metadata.
- Refresh tuner discovery in Jellyfin after changing the scheduler channel list.
The channel appears but has no guide programs
- Verify that Jellyfin can reach the XMLTV URL.
- Check that the XMLTV channel identifiers correspond to the identifiers in the tuner feed.
- Map guide channels to tuner channels manually when Jellyfin does not associate them.
- Refresh guide data after changing channel names or numbers in the scheduler.
Playback fails before the first program
- Play the same media item directly from the scheduler to confirm that the source is available.
- Check path mappings when ErsatzTV reads from disk.
- Check FFmpeg installation and version when using Tunarr; its reviewed setup guidance lists 6.1 as the minimum known supported version and 7.1.1 as recommended at that time.
- Review simultaneous-stream limits and server resource usage.
Playback breaks at program boundaries
- Test the same channel in another Jellyfin client to determine whether the issue is client-specific.
- Compare M3U with the scheduler’s HDHomeRun-style connection when available.
- Test whether Jellyfin transcoding or remuxing changes the transition behavior.
- Check that the next scheduled item has a valid file and compatible audio and video streams.
An Internet Radio M3U station does not appear
Jellyfin’s Internet Radio documentation requires each M3U station entry to include an #EXTINF directive that names the station. A remote M3U also depends on the provider supporting Jellyfin’s request. If direct entry fails, save a local M3U file with the required channel metadata and use that file as the tuner source.

A Jellyfin playlist disappeared
Jellyfin’s Clean up collections and playlists task can remove playlists when their media files are unavailable at the time the task runs. This warning applies to Jellyfin’s own cleanup task. It does not establish that the task modifies an external Tunarr or ErsatzTV schedule. Check file availability and cleanup-task settings before assuming that the scheduler deleted anything.
Design patterns that work well
Predictable daily blocks
Create separate ordered playlists for each block, use fixed schedule times where supported, enable Play All for blocks that must finish as a unit, and expose each item in the EPG. Avoid shuffle in these blocks.
Randomized “always-on” channel
Use a broad playlist, choose shuffle or random playback, and optionally select a random start point. Treat the guide as a representation of the scheduler’s current decision rather than a promise that a particular title will begin at a fixed time.

Use season and episode ordering for the show, enable the schedule option that keeps multipart episodes together, and test the transition from each multipart story to the next item.
Rule-heavy channel
Use a sequential schedule when you need reusable sequences, explicit reset instructions, and defined playout instructions. Build and validate each source independently before combining them.
Operational checklist
- Media libraries are visible to the scheduler.
- Disk paths match or replacements are configured when ErsatzTV streams from disk.
- The channel feed opens from the Jellyfin server.
- The M3U or HDHomeRun-style tuner is added under Jellyfin Live TV.
- The XMLTV provider is added and refreshed.
- Guide channels are mapped to tuner channels where required.
- Playlist playback order matches the intended behavior.
- Play All, Show In EPG, multipart grouping, shuffle, and random-start settings are intentional.
- Fixed-time blocks do not use settings that disable fixed starts.
- At least one complete transition has been tested in every important Jellyfin client.
Jellyfin-native limits to keep in mind
Jellyfin supports HDHomeRun and M3U tuner types. Its M3U tuner can use a local file or URL and provides optional user-agent, simultaneous-stream, and auto-loop settings. Those options control how Jellyfin consumes a feed; they do not create a schedule or generate program data.
For a virtual channel, the scheduler remains the source of truth for program order and timing. Jellyfin’s role is to ingest the tuner stream, read the guide, and present the channel through Live TV clients. Keeping those responsibilities separate makes failures easier to diagnose: feed problems belong to the tuner or scheduler, missing listings belong to XMLTV or mapping, and unavailable files belong to media access.
