Use Windows Storage Sense to schedule routine disk cleanup: open Settings > System > Storage, turn on Storage Sense, open its settings, and choose a frequency under Run Storage Sense. Windows performs the scheduled run when the PC is online and you are signed in; Microsoft does not promise a particular clock time.
Before enabling deletion rules, review what Storage Sense may remove. Temporary files and selected Recycle Bin contents can be managed automatically, while Downloads and cloud content require separate choices. The default scope is the system drive, normally C:, not every drive connected to the PC.
What automatic disk cleanup means in Windows
Windows 10 and Windows 11 include a built-in recurring cleanup feature called Storage Sense. It is designed to remove eligible temporary clutter and apply the storage rules you select without requiring you to launch a cleanup utility each time. Microsoft’s instructions are documented in Manage drive space with Storage Sense.

You choose how often it should run, but Microsoft describes the run as taking place while the computer is online and you are signed in. A laptop that is shut down, offline, or sitting at a sign-in screen may therefore wait until those conditions are met. The setting also does not guarantee that every attached drive will be scanned.

- Recurring automation: Storage Sense applies the frequency and cleanup rules you configure.
- Primary scope: it manages the Windows system drive, generally C:.
- Selective behavior: Downloads and cloud-managed files are not automatically handled unless you explicitly configure those choices.
- User control: you can leave higher-risk categories disabled and use manual tools when you need to inspect files first.
Set up a recurring cleanup schedule with Storage Sense
Menu wording and screen layout can vary slightly between Windows releases and updates, but the following path is the documented route on current Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems.
- Open Settings from the Start menu or with
Windows key + I. - Select System, then select Storage.
- Turn on the Storage Sense switch.
- Open the Storage Sense settings page or expand its settings link.
- Under Run Storage Sense, choose the frequency offered by your Windows build.
- Read each file-removal option on that page and set only the categories and retention periods you actually want. The choices are applied by Storage Sense during its scheduled runs.
The frequency selector controls how often Storage Sense is allowed to run; it is not a promise that cleanup will occur at a selected hour. Microsoft’s documented condition is that the device is online and the user is signed in. For the official setting names and behavior, see Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance.
Choose a conservative first schedule
If you have never used Storage Sense, start with a frequency that gives you time to observe its behavior and leave optional categories off. Routine temporary-file cleanup is generally the least surprising use. You can return to the same page later to change the frequency or add another category after checking what Windows identifies as removable.
Review every cleanup rule before enabling it
Storage Sense separates ordinary temporary-file cleanup from choices that can affect files you may still want. Treat each option as a separate policy rather than enabling every switch at once.
Temporary files
Temporary files are the normal target for automated maintenance. Windows can remove temporary data that it considers unnecessary. The exact categories presented can differ by Windows version, so read the description shown on your PC before accepting the setting.
Recycle Bin
Recycle Bin cleanup is configurable. If you enable it, Windows can remove items after the retention period shown in Storage Sense. Do not rely on the Recycle Bin as a long-term archive for files you might need later; move anything important to a deliberate backup or storage location instead.

Downloads
Downloads are not touched unless you configure Storage Sense to manage them. If you enable that rule, files in the Downloads folder can be deleted after the period of non-use selected in Settings. That folder often contains installers, exported documents, photos, and other files that have not been opened recently but are still wanted, so inspect the retention choice carefully. Cloud-synced content
Cloud-content controls can make locally available files online-only when they have not been used for the configured period. Microsoft says this does not permanently delete the files, and files marked Always keep on this device are exempt. The trade-off is that an online-only item may need an internet connection before it can be opened locally again. Configure this rule only if that behavior fits the way you work.
Know which drive Storage Sense cleans
Storage Sense is principally a system-drive feature. On most Windows installations, that drive is C:, where Windows and the main user profile are stored. It should not be interpreted as a schedule that automatically cleans every internal, external, USB, or secondary data drive.
If a different drive is full, open the storage controls for that drive in Windows or manage its contents directly. Check the drive letter before deleting anything, especially when a PC has multiple volumes with similarly named folders. The built-in storage overview can help you identify which drive is consuming space, but Storage Sense’s recurring rules still apply primarily to the Windows drive.
What to expect when the schedule runs
There is no guaranteed clock time
Windows exposes a frequency rather than a calendar appointment. A selected frequency tells the operating system how often to consider running Storage Sense; it does not let you specify an exact hour or minute. The documented online-and-signed-in requirement explains why two PCs with the same frequency may not clean at exactly the same moment.
A run may remove little or nothing
Storage Sense only acts on files that match the enabled rules and their retention conditions. If the temporary-file categories contain little eligible data, a successful run may produce no dramatic change in free space. That is normal and is not evidence that the schedule has been ignored.

Use the storage page to review the policy
When behavior is unexpected, return to Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense and check the switch, frequency, and category settings. Confirm that the PC can be online and that you are signed in during the period in which you expect a run.
Use Cleanup recommendations for a review-first cleanup
Storage Sense is the recurring option, but it is not the best tool when you want to inspect candidates before deleting them. Windows provides a separate review screen at Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations. Microsoft describes this feature in Free up drive space in Windows and Storage settings in Windows.
Cleanup recommendations can group possible space savings into categories such as:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Temporary files.
- Large or unused files.
- Cloud-synced files.
- Unused apps.
Open each category, review the listed items, select only what you recognize, and confirm the cleanup. This workflow is manual and selective: it does not replace the Storage Sense schedule, but it is useful for an initial cleanup or for a PC where you need to make a deliberate decision about large files and applications.
Run Disk Cleanup manually when you need finer selection
Disk Cleanup is another built-in Windows utility. It is useful when you want to choose file categories yourself rather than relying on a recurring policy.
- Search Windows for Disk Cleanup and open the utility.
- When prompted, choose the drive to examine.
- Review the available file categories and select only the categories you understand.
- Confirm the deletion.
The available categories depend on the system and its update history. Do not select everything blindly: each category represents a different kind of data, and some may be useful for recovery or troubleshooting.

Be especially careful with a previous Windows installation
Disk Cleanup may offer files from a previous Windows installation. Microsoft states that removing those files removes the Windows.old rollback data and cannot be undone. Keep that category unchecked until you are certain you will not need to return to the earlier installation. The warning and additional guidance are covered in Microsoft’s free-space instructions.

Advanced option: a saved Disk Cleanup profile and Task Scheduler
Microsoft support also references an older, version-sensitive route that combines Disk Cleanup’s saved settings with Task Scheduler. The procedure uses cleanmgr /sageset to save Disk Cleanup choices, then points to Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > DiskCleanup, where Microsoft names a SilentCleanup task. The reference appears in a support article about a specific Windows 10 issue, not as Microsoft’s current general-purpose scheduling tutorial: the referenced support article.
Use this route only if you understand Task Scheduler and the options exist on your own installation:
- Open an elevated Command Prompt if your Windows build and support guidance call for it.
- Run
cleanmgr /sagesetand save the cleanup selections presented by Disk Cleanup. - Open Task Scheduler.
- Browse to Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > DiskCleanup.
- Check whether the SilentCleanup task and the expected settings are present before changing anything.
Task names, triggers, and saved-profile behavior can vary by Windows version. If the task or command behaves differently, do not force the procedure. For ordinary recurring maintenance, Storage Sense is the clearer documented choice.

Troubleshoot common scheduling problems
Storage Sense is enabled but has not run when expected
- Check that the Storage Sense switch is still on.
- Confirm a frequency is selected under Run Storage Sense.
- Keep the PC online and signed in long enough for Windows to perform its scheduled check.
- Remember that the frequency does not specify an exact clock time.
- Inspect the enabled categories and retention periods; there may simply be no eligible files.
The drive you need to clean is not C:
Storage Sense’s normal scope is the Windows system drive. Use the storage controls for the other drive, Cleanup recommendations, or Disk Cleanup after selecting the correct drive. Verify the drive letter before removing files.

That is expected unless Downloads cleanup was explicitly configured. If you decide to enable it, choose a non-use period that matches your workflow and move important files out of Downloads first.

Cloud files appear to be leaving the PC
Check the cloud-content rule. Storage Sense can make locally available items online-only rather than permanently deleting them. Mark files that must remain local as Always keep on this device, as Microsoft documents in its Storage Sense guidance.
You need space immediately
Do not wait for the next recurring run. Open Cleanup recommendations for a review-first cleanup, or run Disk Cleanup manually and select the drive and categories yourself.
You cannot find SilentCleanup or the saved-task behavior
Treat the advanced procedure as version-sensitive. The task may not be exposed or may differ from the support article’s Windows 10 context. Use Storage Sense for normal recurring cleanup instead of modifying an undocumented or missing task.

You are considering deleting the previous Windows installation
Stop and confirm that you no longer need rollback capability. Microsoft says deleting the previous installation removes Windows.old rollback files and cannot be undone.
A practical policy for most Windows PCs
- Enable Storage Sense from Settings > System > Storage.
- Choose a frequency under Run Storage Sense.
- Leave Downloads cleanup disabled unless you have a separate habit of archiving files elsewhere.
- Configure Recycle Bin and cloud-content rules only after deciding how long you need those files locally.
- Use Cleanup recommendations for a human-reviewed pass through large files, unused apps, and other categories.
- Use Disk Cleanup manually when you need category-level control, and preserve previous-installation files until rollback is no longer needed.
- Use the Task Scheduler route only for a specific, supported legacy scenario where the task and saved options are visible on your Windows installation.
For most readers, Storage Sense is the appropriate answer to automatic disk cleanup: it is built into Windows 10 and 11, offers a recurring frequency, and keeps potentially destructive choices separate so you can review them before enabling them.
