To run Robocopy automatically, put a complete Robocopy command in a Task Scheduler action or register that command with schtasks /create. The task must run under an account that can read the source, write the destination, and write the log. Decide first whether you want a one-way update or an exact mirror: /MIR can delete files and folders from the destination.
Understand what you are scheduling
Robocopy is a command-line file-copy utility. It performs the copy, update, retry, logging, and mirror operations; Windows Task Scheduler only decides when the command starts and which account runs it. A scheduled task therefore needs a fully specified command, explicit source and destination paths, and a usable run account.
The account and environment used by the task are part of the configuration. A command that works in an interactive Command Prompt can fail when started by Task Scheduler because the task may use another user, another permission set, or a session without the interactive user’s mapped drives. Always validate the command in the same context in which it will run.

One-way update without destination purging
Use /E when the destination should receive the source directory tree, including empty subdirectories, without intentionally deleting destination-only content. This is the safer starting point for a backup-style copy when older files at the destination must remain available.

A basic command is:
robocopy "C:Source" "D:Backup" /E /R:2 /W:5 /LOG:"C:LogsRobocopy.log"
/R:2 limits a failed-file retry to two attempts, and /W:5 waits five seconds between retries. Bounded values prevent a task from remaining stuck for an unbounded period when a file or network location is unavailable.
Exact mirror with deletion
/MIR mirrors the source tree and is equivalent to /E plus /PURGE. Purging removes destination files and directories that are not present in the source. That behavior is appropriate only when the destination is meant to match the source exactly; it is not an ordinary “keep every backup version” operation.
Because a mirror can remove data, do not enable it unattended until you have reviewed a dry run and confirmed that the destination contains nothing that should be retained.

| Choice | What it does | Use it when | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
/E |
Copies subdirectories, including empty directories. | You want source changes copied without deliberate destination cleanup. | Destination-only files remain and may need separate retention management. |
/MIR |
Copies the tree and purges destination items absent from the source. | The destination must be an exact current representation of the source. | Destination-only files and directories can be deleted. |
Preview the operation before allowing changes
Add /L to list what Robocopy would do without copying, deleting, or timestamping files. Use this preview for both non-destructive copies and mirrors, then inspect the output and the destination before removing /L.
Preview a one-way update:
robocopy "C:Source" "D:Backup" /E /R:2 /W:5 /L /LOG:"C:LogsRobocopy-preview.log"
Preview a mirror separately:
robocopy "C:Source" "D:Backup" /MIR /R:2 /W:5 /L /LOG:"C:LogsRobocopy-preview.log"
Read the preview for every deletion or unexpected path. Once the operation is confirmed, remove /L from the command used by the scheduled task. Keep the same source and destination spelling between the preview and the live task so that you are reviewing the operation you will actually run.
Prepare the log location and command
Microsoft recommends creating a log that can be reviewed after Robocopy finishes. The directory containing the log must already exist and be writable by the task’s run account; Robocopy does not make that directory for you.
/LOG:"C:LogsRobocopy.log"writes the run to the named file and overwrites an existing file./LOG+:"C:LogsRobocopy.log"appends the run to an existing file instead of replacing it.
Choose the behavior deliberately. Overwriting leaves a current-run record that is easy to inspect. Appending preserves history but can create a large file, so establish your own rotation or retention process if you need long-term records. The command reference does not define a universal retention period.

Use quotation marks around any path containing spaces. Verify that the source, destination, and log parent directory exist before registering the task. If the destination is a network share, use its UNC path, for example \serversharefolder, rather than assuming an interactive mapped drive will exist for the scheduled process.
Optionally put the command in a batch file
A .cmd file can make a complex action easier to read, edit, and test. It also avoids trying to place several layers of quotation marks directly in a Task Scheduler action or a schtasks command.
For example, save the following as C:ScriptsRobocopySync.cmd after replacing the paths:
@echo off
robocopy "C:Source" "D:Backup" /E /R:2 /W:5 /LOG:"C:LogsRobocopy.log"
Run the batch file manually once, then run the preview form with /L before changing it to an unattended mirror. The batch file is still executed under the task account, so test that account’s access rather than relying only on an administrator’s interactive test.

The graphical method is useful when you want to inspect each setting. Names can vary slightly by Windows edition, but the relevant controls are in the standard Task Scheduler task editor.
- Open Task Scheduler and choose Create Task, not merely a shortcut that hides the account and conditions you need to review.
- On the General tab, enter a descriptive name such as
Robocopy Sync. Select the account that has the required source, destination, and log permissions. Decide whether the task needs to run only when that user is logged on or whether it must run unattended; an unattended task still needs valid credentials and path access. - Open Triggers, select New, and choose the recurrence. For a daily job, select a daily schedule and set the start time. Other available schedule types include minute, hourly, weekly, monthly, once, at system start, at logon, when idle, and on an event. Choose a cadence that fits the amount and importance of the data; there is no universal interval mandated by Robocopy.
- On Actions, select New and choose Start a program. If you are calling Robocopy directly, set Program/script to the full path of
robocopy.exeavailable on the machine, and put the source, destination, switches, and log path in Add arguments. If you use a batch file, set Program/script to the batch file path. Keep the action explicit rather than depending on a working directory or an interactive shell. - Review Conditions and Settings. Remove conditions that would prevent the job from running in the intended environment, and retain operational safeguards appropriate for the machine. Do not assume that a task paused by an unrelated power or idle condition has failed because of Robocopy.
- Select OK to register the task. If Windows requests credentials for the selected account, provide credentials that remain valid for the task’s intended lifetime.
If you enter Robocopy directly in the action, the arguments correspond to the command shown earlier. If you use a batch file, keep the Robocopy command inside that file and point the action to it; this is often easier to audit when paths contain spaces.
Create the same schedule with schtasks
schtasks.exe provides command-line task management. Microsoft documents it as performing the same operations as Scheduled Tasks in Control Panel, so the graphical and command-line approaches are interchangeable ways to register the job.

This illustrative command creates a daily task at 02:00:
schtasks /create /tn "Robocopy Sync" /tr "robocopy C:Source D:Backup /E /R:2 /W:5 /LOG:C:LogsRobocopy.log" /sc daily /st 02:00 /ru "DOMAINBackupUser"
Adapt the task name, paths, schedule, and account to the computer. This is a syntax example, not a claim that it has been run on your machine. Quote paths and commands containing spaces correctly. For difficult quoting, register a batch file instead:
schtasks /create /tn "Robocopy Sync" /tr "C:ScriptsRobocopySync.cmd" /sc daily /st 02:00 /ru "DOMAINBackupUser"
| Parameter | Purpose | Example |
|---|---|---|
/create |
Registers a new scheduled task. | /create |
/tn |
Sets the task name. | /tn "Robocopy Sync" |
/tr |
Specifies the program, script, or command that runs. | /tr "C:ScriptsRobocopySync.cmd" |
/sc |
Selects the schedule frequency. | /sc daily |
/st |
Sets the start time where that schedule supports one. | /st 02:00 |
/ru |
Specifies the account under which the task runs. | /ru "DOMAINBackupUser" |
Supported schedule types include minute, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, once, on start, on logon, on idle, and on an event. Select the type and time syntax appropriate for the Windows installation and the desired recurrence.
Configure permissions and network access
The run account must be able to read every source directory, create or update files in the destination, and create or update the log. For a local destination, check both the source and destination file-system permissions. For a network destination, the account needs the required permissions at the share and file-system levels.
Prefer a UNC path such as \servershareBackup for a scheduled network copy. A drive letter mapped in your logged-on desktop is tied to that interactive session and should not be assumed to be present when Task Scheduler launches the job under another account or session. If a network location requires credentials, configure the task account and access according to your organization’s Windows policy rather than embedding unprotected credentials in a command.
Tasks that require interaction with a logged-on desktop should not be treated like unattended backups. Conversely, a task intended to run overnight must not depend on a user opening a Command Prompt, mapping a drive, or confirming a prompt.
Test the registered task in its real context
Do not wait for the first scheduled time to discover an account or path problem. Start a controlled test manually through Task Scheduler, then inspect both the task result and the Robocopy log.

- Confirm that the live command no longer contains
/Lonly when you are ready for actual changes. If the operation is a mirror, recheck the preview and destination immediately before this test. - In Task Scheduler, select the task and choose Run. This exercises the registered action rather than the command typed in your personal terminal.
- Alternatively, start it from an elevated Command Prompt with
schtasks /run /tn "Robocopy Sync", using the exact registered task name. - Open the configured log and verify that the expected source and destination paths were processed, that the log was created or updated, and that no access or path errors appear.
- Check the task’s last-run information and history. If the task did not start, query its registration with
schtasks /query /tn "Robocopy Sync"and review the trigger, account, and action. - For a network destination, repeat the test after signing out or otherwise ensuring that it is not relying on your interactive mapped drive or session.
A successful interactive run proves only that your interactive account could perform the operation. A successful run launched by the registered task is the meaningful test of the scheduled configuration.

Robocopy reports access denied or copies nothing
Open the log first. Confirm the task account can read the source and write both the destination and the log directory. Check the spelling and existence of every path. If the destination is a share, test the UNC path under the task account and verify both share and file-system permissions.

The command works manually but not in Task Scheduler
Compare the account, environment, and paths. The scheduled task may use a different account, may run without your mapped drive, or may start in a different session. Replace mapped-drive paths with UNC paths where appropriate, use fully qualified paths, and run the task from its registered definition rather than from your personal terminal.
Files were removed unexpectedly
Inspect the command for /MIR or /PURGE. Those switches intentionally remove destination items absent from the source. If deletion is not part of the requirement, use an /E command instead. Before any future mirror run, add /L, save a preview log, and review the planned deletions.
The log is missing or unhelpful
Make sure the parent log directory exists and that the task account can write there. Check whether you selected /LOG, which overwrites the previous file, or /LOG+, which appends. A path that is writable for your interactive account may not be writable for the scheduled account.
The task did not start at the expected time
Query the registered task with schtasks /query and inspect its trigger, start time, account, and conditions. In Task Scheduler, review the task history and Settings tab for conditions that may defer or prevent a run. Use schtasks /run to separate a scheduling problem from a Robocopy or permissions problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe job appears to hang on an unavailable file or share
Use bounded retry and wait values such as /R:2 /W:5 rather than leaving retries unlimited. Review the log to identify the unavailable path, then correct the storage, network, or permission issue before increasing retry limits. A longer retry policy is an environment decision, not a requirement of the scheduler.

Decide how to operate the job over time
Choose a recurrence based on change frequency
Daily is only an example. A source that changes throughout the day may justify a more frequent trigger; a rarely changed archive may not. Select minute, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, startup, logon, idle, or event scheduling according to the data’s change rate and the time available for each run. The command references do not prescribe a universal cadence.
Choose a log strategy
Use /LOG when the current run is the primary record and you have another way to retain older evidence. Use /LOG+ when a cumulative file is useful, and then monitor its size. If you need dated files or a specific retention period, implement that separately; Robocopy’s logging switches do not define a universal history policy.
Separate preview and live commands
Keep a documented preview command with /L so that a future administrator can inspect a proposed mirror without changing data. The scheduled command should be the reviewed live form without /L. Do not leave a preview in production expecting it to perform a copy, and do not remove /L from an unreviewed mirror merely because the task is due to run.
Practical command patterns
Local one-way copy
robocopy "C:Source" "D:Backup" /E /R:2 /W:5 /LOG:"C:LogsRobocopy.log"
This copies the source tree, including empty directories, with two retries and a five-second wait. It does not request mirror purging.
Local mirror after a reviewed preview
robocopy "C:Source" "D:Backup" /MIR /R:2 /W:5 /LOG:"C:LogsRobocopy.log"
Use this only after running the same command with /L and checking the destination-only items that will be removed.
Network destination
robocopy "C:Source" "\servershareBackup" /E /R:2 /W:5 /LOG:"C:LogsRobocopy.log"
Register this under an account that can reach the UNC path when no interactive user is logged on. Confirm share and file-system rights through a task-launched test.
Quick Recap
What to verify before leaving the task unattended
- The source and destination semantics are intentional:
/Efor a non-purging tree copy or/MIRfor a purge-capable exact mirror. - A preview using
/Lwas reviewed, especially for a mirror. - The destination and log directories already exist and are writable by the run account.
- The command uses explicit paths and bounded retry and wait values.
- The selected trigger reflects the environment rather than an arbitrary default.
- The task account has all required local, share, and file-system permissions.
- A manual run launched from the registered task completed and produced a readable log.
schtasks /queryshows the expected task name, trigger, action, and account.- You know whether each run overwrites its log with
/LOGor appends with/LOG+, and have a separate retention plan if history matters.
