Use PhotoScan for a physical photo print and Samsung’s built-in camera document scan for paper documents. A picture that is already a digital file in Gallery does not need scanning; open, edit, share, or back it up instead. The two scanning workflows look similar, but they solve different problems and produce different results.

Choose the right Samsung scanning workflow

“Scan a picture” can mean three different things. Identifying the object first prevents you from using a document tool on a family photograph or trying to scan a file that is already digital.

What you have Use this workflow Where the result goes
A printed photograph Google PhotoScan, launched through Google Photos Saved automatically on the device after processing
A paper document, receipt, form, or page Samsung Camera’s Scan control, when available, then Samsung Notes for optional editing or PDF export Gallery first; Samsung Notes can import it and export it as a PDF
An image already stored in Gallery or another app No scanning required; use the existing digital file Remains a digital image unless you deliberately export or print it

Neither documented phone workflow requires a separate scanner, stand, lens, or other physical product. The quality you obtain still depends on the print, lighting, camera, focus, and the condition of the original.

Scan a printed photograph with PhotoScan

Google documents PhotoScan as the Android workflow for scanning and saving printed photographs. On a Samsung phone, you can reach it from Google Photos by following Create > Import from other places > Scan photos with your phone > PhotoScan. The wording or location can change as Google updates its apps, but the destination is PhotoScan rather than Samsung’s document-scanning control. Google’s instructions are available in Google Photos Help.

Scanner Bin - The Clever Document Scanning Solution
  • Flatbed scanners simply cannot compete with your smartphone and a Scanner Bin. Improved resolution and color rendering compared to popular flatbed scanners. Compare to 1200 DPI. Takes a fraction of the time to scan at a fraction of the cost. Not to mention that flatbed scanners end up adding a lot of hazardous e-waste to your local landfill.
  • Solve the common issues with smartphone scanning. Provides a contrasting background for consistent edge-detection and auto-cropping. Controls the lighting and provides stability and proper positioning while you scan with your smartphone.
  • Scan photographs, receipts, letters, notes, artwork, fragile documents, etc. Also used as an aid for the blind or visually impaired or as a document camera for remote learning. When you aren't scanning, turn on its side to use as a desk-side bin to toss in the items you want to scan later.
  • This version is the lowest cost option for a scanner solution. It is also simplified for set up and use, and therefore is recommended for those who are blind, visually impaired or have movement disorders.
  • Use with popular FREE APPS for document scanning like Adobe Scan, Scanbot, Evernote Scannable, CamScanner, and Prizmo Go

Prepare the print and phone

  • Remove the photograph from a plastic sleeve, album pocket, or frame before scanning. These surfaces can introduce reflections.
  • Place the print on a flat, stable surface with a background that contrasts with its edges. A plain, non-reflective surface makes corner detection easier.
  • Orient the phone to match the photograph: hold it vertically for a portrait print and horizontally for a landscape print.
  • Keep the phone directly above the photograph rather than viewing it from an angle. Tilting creates geometric distortion and can make one edge appear larger than another.
  • Use enough light to see the print clearly. If the photograph is behind glass, Google recommends turning on the flash. For an uncovered print, test the result and change the lighting if reflections appear.

Capture the image

  1. Open PhotoScan through the Google Photos path above.
  2. Lay the print flat and frame it in the PhotoScan viewfinder.
  3. Tap the capture button while holding the phone directly over the center of the print.
  4. PhotoScan displays four on-screen markers. Move the phone so the circle reaches each marker in turn. Keep the phone roughly parallel to the print while you move; do not pivot it by tilting.
  5. Wait for PhotoScan to process the combined captures. The multi-point process is intended to reduce reflections compared with taking one ordinary camera picture.
  6. Open the resulting thumbnail. Rotate the image, adjust its corners, or delete the result and try again if the framing is wrong.

Google says the processed photograph is saved automatically to the device. Check Gallery or your photo library after processing rather than assuming that the preview alone is the saved file.

Control glare, shadows, and framing in PhotoScan

Glossy photographic paper and glass are reflective. A bright patch can hide faces or detail even when the image appears correctly framed. PhotoScan’s marker-based capture is a compromise: it asks you to move the phone to obtain several views, which can take longer but helps address reflections.

When glare remains

  • If the result contains a bright reflection, move to a less brightly lit place and scan again. Avoid placing a strong light directly above the print.
  • For a print behind glass, enable the flash as Google advises, then inspect the result for remaining hotspots.
  • Make sure the print is not inside a sleeve or album page. Plastic can reflect the phone and room back into the capture.
  • Keep the phone parallel to the print. Tilting can move a reflection across the surface and also distort the borders.

Speed versus glare removal

PhotoScan allows glare removal to be disabled. With Glare removal off, you do not have to move the phone around the four markers, so capture is faster. Google warns that this setting does not remove glare. Use it when speed matters and the surface is matte or reflection-free; leave glare removal enabled when a shiny print or glass is producing visible reflections.

Correct borders after capture

Open the thumbnail immediately after processing and inspect all four corners. Use the corner-adjustment control if PhotoScan included too much of the background or clipped part of the print. Rotate portrait images that were captured in the wrong orientation. If a hand, shadow, or reflection still obscures important content, delete that result and rescan instead of relying on a crop to restore missing detail.

Scan a paper document with Samsung Camera

Samsung’s documented document workflow is separate from PhotoScan. It is designed for pages, forms, receipts, and similar rectangular documents, not for digitizing a photographic print. Samsung says the feature can identify a document, remove unwanted shadows and hands, and align rectangular edges. The saved scan appears in Gallery. The current US instructions are in Samsung Support’s guide to scanning and editing documents on a Galaxy phone or tablet.

Capture and save the document

  1. Open the Camera app.
  2. Place the paper on a flat surface and line up the viewfinder with the entire page. Keep all four edges visible when possible.
  3. Watch for the Scan control to appear on screen. Tap Scan when it is offered.
  4. Review the detected page and tap Save.
  5. Open Gallery to confirm that the saved scan is present.

Samsung describes the output as an exact replica of the document for access in Gallery. That description applies to its document workflow; it is not a promise that a camera scan will reproduce a glossy photograph with the fidelity of a dedicated photo-scanning system.

If the Scan button does not appear

Camera controls vary by Galaxy model, One UI release, region, and installed updates. Samsung’s update notes for model SM-F926B, for example, describe changes to document scanning and editing, including Auto scan and a post-scan edit screen; the notes are published at Samsung’s SM-F926B software-update page. This is evidence that the interface can change, not a universal menu path for every Samsung device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Make sure the Camera app is updated and try again with the page flat, well lit, and fully inside the viewfinder.
  • Look for an on-screen Scan prompt rather than assuming it is permanently displayed as a mode.
  • Do not rely on a particular Scene Optimizer switch being present; labels and controls differ by software.
  • If no Scan control appears, consult support for your exact Galaxy model and software version. Samsung’s model-specific instructions are more reliable than a menu path from another device.

Import a Samsung camera scan into Notes and make a PDF

Samsung Notes can hold the captured document and export it as a PDF. This is useful when the scan needs to be sent as a page-oriented file rather than as an image in Gallery.

  1. Open Samsung Notes and create a new note.
  2. Choose Attach > Image > Gallery.
  3. Select the document scan you saved from Camera.
  4. Tap Done to place the scan in the note.
  5. Use Notes’ export option to save or share the note as a PDF.

The Camera step and the Notes step have different purposes: Camera creates the image, while Notes provides a place to assemble or edit it and then export a PDF. If you only need a picture in Gallery, you can stop after saving from Camera.

What to do with a picture that is already digital

If the image is already in Gallery, Google Photos, a message, or cloud storage, scanning it with the phone’s camera creates a second-generation copy. Open the existing file instead. Typical tasks include cropping, rotating, adjusting brightness, sharing the original, or making a backup. A camera scan is appropriate only when the source is a physical print or paper page.

Fix common scanning problems

The print is skewed or one edge is missing

Rescan with the phone directly above the print and all four edges visible. Use a contrasting background and correct the corners in the processed thumbnail. Do not try to fix severe perspective distortion by repeatedly cropping; capture the print squarely first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A bright spot covers part of the photograph

Turn glare removal back on, move to a less brightly lit location, remove any sleeve, and repeat the four-marker capture. If the print is behind glass, use the flash as Google recommends and check the result. Disabling glare removal makes the process quicker but leaves the reflection untreated.

The document has shadows or a hand in the frame

For a paper document, place the page flat, keep your hand outside the viewfinder, and wait for Samsung Camera’s Scan prompt. Samsung’s document processing is intended to remove unwanted shadows and hands and align rectangular shapes. If the page is a photo print, switch to PhotoScan instead; the two workflows are not interchangeable.

The saved file cannot be found

PhotoScan saves its processed photograph automatically on the device, while Samsung Camera places a saved document scan in Gallery. Open the relevant app and check the most recent items. If you used Samsung Notes, remember that the imported image and the exported PDF are separate outputs.

The phone’s menus do not match these steps

Samsung changes Camera and editing controls through model-specific software updates. The SM-F926B notes show that even document scanning can gain features such as Auto scan and a post-scan edit screen over time. Treat the Scan prompt as conditional, and use support documentation for your exact model when it is absent or named differently.

Which method should you use?

Decision Best choice Reason
Digitizing a family snapshot, postcard, or other photo print PhotoScan It is the documented Android workflow specifically for printed photos and uses four guided viewpoints to address reflections.
Capturing a receipt, contract, school page, or form Samsung Camera Scan It detects rectangular documents, reduces unwanted shadows and hands, and saves the result in Gallery.
Sending a document as a formal file Camera Scan, then Samsung Notes PDF export Notes can import the Gallery image and export the note as a PDF.
Working with an image that is already on the phone Use the existing digital image There is no physical original to scan, and photographing the screen or file adds an unnecessary copy.

Limits to keep in mind

  • These instructions do not establish a universal Samsung Camera menu. Availability depends on the device and software version.
  • PhotoScan’s glare reduction is not a guarantee of glare-free results. Reflective paper, glass, room lighting, and the angle of the phone still matter.
  • No quality statistic in the documented workflows says that a phone scan matches a dedicated photo scanner. Inspect important images at full size before discarding the original print.
  • The cited workflows use the Samsung phone and the named apps; they do not require buying a new physical accessory.

A practical checklist before you finish

  • Identify whether the source is a print, a paper document, or an existing digital file.
  • For a print, use PhotoScan, a flat contrasting surface, a parallel phone, and the four-marker capture.
  • For a document, wait for Samsung Camera’s Scan prompt, save it, and verify it in Gallery.
  • Inspect borders, rotation, reflections, shadows, and readability before moving or recycling the original.
  • Use Samsung Notes only when you need editing, organization, or PDF export.
  • If a control is missing, check instructions for the exact Galaxy model and installed software rather than forcing a path from another device.
