You can scan an entire paper document with the iPhone camera and finish with one PDF, without a separate scanner. Use Notes when the PDF belongs with a note, Files when you want to choose a folder immediately, or Preview when you plan to edit the PDF after scanning. In each app, keep adding pages in the same scan session and finish with Done; the app then combines the pages into a single document.
Choose the right iPhone app first
All three Apple workflows use the iPhone camera, but they place the finished PDF in different working contexts. The table below lets you choose before you start.

Labels can move or be translated differently as iOS changes. Look for the app and action described here rather than relying on an exact icon position.
Prepare the pages before opening the scanner
- Put the pages in the order you want them to appear. The order in which you capture them becomes the PDF’s page order.
- Remove clips, staples, sticky notes, and anything that hides the page edges. A flat page gives edge detection a better outline.
- Use an evenly lit, non-reflective surface. Keep hands and shadows away from the text, and avoid a bright lamp reflecting off glossy paper.
- Have enough room to move the phone over every page without bumping the stack. The camera needs to see the whole sheet before capture.
- If the document contains private information, scan it in a place where other people cannot see the pages or the phone screen.
You do not need a dedicated scanner, stand, book holder, replacement part, or other hardware for these workflows. The iPhone camera and the Apple app are the core equipment.

How page capture works
Apple’s document scanner can capture a page automatically when it detects the page edges. Hold the iPhone steady over the sheet and wait for the capture. If automatic capture does not suit the page, switch to manual capture, tap the shutter, and adjust the detected corners before accepting the page. The same capture choices are available in the documented Notes and Files scanning flows.
After a page is accepted, keep the scanning session open and position the next page. Do not tap Done until the final page is captured; tapping it ends the session and creates the multi-page document.
Before you tap Done, check the whole batch
Pause after the last capture and review the page previews while the paper stack is still beside you. Count the previews against the number of physical pages, and look for a page that was captured twice or skipped. A quick check at this point is easier than discovering a missing page after the original document has been put away.

A page can be present but still unusable if it is sideways, clipped at the edge, or covered by glare. If one page is poor, recapture it before ending the session. Keep the final page order consistent with the paper order, especially for forms, contracts, applications, or receipts whose pages refer to one another.
When every page is present and readable, tap Done once. The app then finishes the scan as one multi-page PDF rather than a collection of unrelated images.
Scan several pages into one PDF in Notes
Notes is the most convenient route when the document should remain attached to a particular note.
- Open Notes.
- Open the note that should contain the scan, or create a new note.
- Tap the Attachments button and choose Scan Documents.
- Place the first page in view. Keep the phone steady for automatic capture, or choose manual capture and tap the shutter. If the outline is wrong, drag the page corners until they match the paper and accept the scan.
- Place each remaining page in view and capture it in the same session. Continue until the last page is complete.
- Tap Done.
Notes saves the resulting document as a PDF in the note. Open the scan from that note whenever you need to review it. Because the PDF is an attachment, the note can also hold context such as a title, typed explanation, or related material without changing the scanned pages.

Check the page order before leaving the note
Scroll through the note and open the scanned document to verify that the first page is first and the final page is last. If a page was captured out of order, correct it before sharing rather than expecting the recipient to rearrange it.

Scan directly to a folder in Files
Choose Files when the destination matters more than the surrounding note. This workflow asks where to put the PDF after you have captured all pages.
- Open Files.
- Tap More.
- Choose Scan Documents.
- Capture the first page. Let automatic capture work when the edges are detected, or use manual capture and correct the corners when necessary.
- Continue capturing every remaining page without ending the scan.
- Tap Done.
- Choose the Files location where the PDF should be stored.
- Tap Save.
Files is useful when you already have a filing scheme, such as a folder for a project or a location you use for later sharing. The important distinction from Notes is timing: Files asks for the destination as part of the save process, while Notes places the PDF in the note you opened.
Use Preview to create and edit a combined PDF
Preview provides a third route for people who want to make a PDF and then work on its pages in the same app.
- Open Preview.
- Tap Scan Documents.
- Capture the first page.
- Repeat the capture for every additional page while the scan session remains open.
- Tap Done.
Preview combines the captured pages into one PDF. After the document is created, its thumbnails provide controls for cropping, rotating, or adjusting scan coloring. Save the finished document from Preview when the pages look correct.
Correct a scan after capture
A multi-page PDF is not final merely because the camera has finished. Review every page at a readable size before sending it.
Rotate a page
In Notes, open the scanned PDF and use its page controls to rotate a page that was captured sideways. A rotation fixes orientation without requiring another camera capture.
Crop away the background
If a tabletop or excessive margin surrounds a sheet, crop the scanned page so the paper fills the page more cleanly. Check that no letters, signatures, or page numbers are cut off before saving.

Notes can insert a blank page into a scanned document. This is useful when a form intentionally contains a blank separator or when the final PDF must preserve a page position even though no paper was scanned for it.

Adjust scan coloring in Preview
Preview’s thumbnails include controls for adjusting scan coloring. Use them when a page is too gray, too dark, or otherwise difficult to read, then inspect small text and thin lines again before saving.
Rescan instead of repairing a bad image
Editing cannot restore text that was hidden by a finger, glare, blur, or an overlapping object. If a character or signature is missing, delete or replace that page with a new capture while the paper is available.
Where the iPhone saves the combined PDF
Notes
The PDF remains attached to the note you selected or created. To find it later, open Notes, locate that note, and open the scan attachment. It is not automatically placed in an arbitrary Files folder by this workflow.
Files
You select the destination after tapping Done and then tapping Save. Remember the location you chose; that folder is the starting point for renaming, moving, or sharing the PDF.
Preview
Preview creates the combined PDF in the app’s document workflow. Use Preview’s save controls to choose the destination offered on your device, then return to that location to open the file later.
Share or export the finished PDF
Open the saved scan in its app and use that app’s share or copy action. Notes supports copying or sharing the PDF from the note. A Files-saved PDF can be shared from its file location, and a Preview document can be saved before you share it. If the recipient needs the pages in a particular order, verify the thumbnails immediately before sharing.
When a scan is an attachment in Notes but someone else needs an ordinary file, use the note’s PDF share action rather than sending screenshots of individual pages. A single PDF preserves the page sequence and gives the recipient one document to download or archive.
Troubleshoot common scanning problems
The camera does not capture automatically
- Move the phone so all four page edges are visible.
- Increase even lighting and remove shadows or reflections.
- Hold the phone steadier and keep it parallel to the page.
- Switch to manual capture, tap the shutter, and correct the corners yourself.
Automatic capture is a convenience, not a requirement. Manual capture is the dependable fallback when the paper blends into the background or the edge detection outline is inaccurate.

The corners are wrong or the page is skewed
Before accepting a manual capture, drag each corner to the physical corner of the sheet. If the page is still distorted, place it flat, move the phone higher, and recapture. A clean outline at capture time is usually faster than trying to compensate later.
A page is missing from the PDF
Open the document’s thumbnails and count them against the paper stack. If you tapped Done too soon, start another scan for the missing page and insert or combine it using the editing controls available in the app you chose. In Notes, a blank page can be inserted, but a missing printed page needs a new scan.
Pages are in the wrong order
Page sequence follows capture sequence. Review the thumbnails, then recapture pages in the intended order or use the app’s page controls to move or replace them when those controls are available. Do not rely on filenames to communicate order; the PDF’s internal page sequence is what most readers see first.

- Recapture under brighter, diffuse light.
- Keep the lens clean and the phone steady.
- Reduce glare from laminated or glossy paper.
- Check the crop so small text is not clipped.
- Use Preview’s scan-color adjustment when that improves contrast.
Always zoom into the smallest important text, dates, totals, and signatures. A page that looks acceptable as a thumbnail may still be unusable at normal reading size.
You cannot find the saved file
First return to the app used for scanning. In Notes, look in the note that was open during capture. In Files, check the exact location selected in the save dialog. In Preview, use the location chosen by its save action. Searching a different app before checking the original destination can make a correctly saved PDF appear missing.
A practical decision path
- If the scan belongs with meeting notes, a class note, or other written context, open Notes and scan into that note.
- If you already know the folder where the final file belongs, open Files and choose that location after scanning.
- If page-level cleanup is the main reason for scanning, open Preview so its thumbnail editing tools are immediately available.
- Regardless of the app, capture every page before tapping Done, inspect the page sequence, and only then save or share.
Limits and interface differences to expect
Apple’s app names and button placement can vary with iOS updates and language settings. The documented actions remain the useful landmarks: open the named app, find Scan Documents, capture pages in sequence, and finish with Done. If a label is translated or appears in a different menu, look for the equivalent attachment, more-options, scan, or save action in that app.
The three routes are software workflows, not hardware specifications. They do not promise a particular camera resolution, page-per-minute rate, optical character recognition result, or archival standard. For ordinary paperwork, forms, receipts, and handouts, careful positioning and a complete page-by-page review matter more than adding equipment.

- Every physical page appears once.
- Pages are in the intended order and orientation.
- All four corners and all important text are visible.
- No page contains glare, a finger, or an accidental background object.
- The PDF is saved in the destination you can identify later.
- The file opens successfully from that destination before you send it.

Which iPhone app should I use for a multi-page PDF?
Use Notes when the scan belongs with a note and related context, Files when you want to choose a folder at save time, and Preview when you want to create and then edit the PDF with thumbnail controls.
Where does an iPhone scan go in Notes?
Notes saves the scanned document as a PDF attachment in the note that was open when you started. To find it, return to that note and open the scan attachment; it is not automatically put in a random Files folder.
Where does Files save the PDF?
After you capture the pages in Files, tap Done, choose the destination offered by the save dialog, and tap Save. The selected folder or Files location is where you later rename, move, or share the document.

Can I add a page after I already tapped Done?
You can start another scan for the missing printed page and use the editing controls available in the app to insert or combine it. In Notes, you can also insert a blank page, but a blank page does not replace a missing printed page.
What if automatic page detection does not work?
Switch to manual capture, tap the shutter, and adjust the detected corners so they match the paper. Better lighting, a flat page, visible edges, and a steadier phone often improve automatic detection, but manual capture is a supported alternative.
Can I fix a sideways or badly framed page without scanning again?
A sideways page can be rotated, and excessive background can be cropped in the available editing controls. If glare, blur, a finger, or another object hides text, recapture the page because editing cannot restore missing details.
Does Preview really combine scans into one PDF?
Yes. Preview’s scanning flow accepts additional pages before you finish, and tapping Done produces one combined PDF. Its thumbnails can then be used to crop, rotate, or adjust scan coloring before saving.
Do I need a separate scanner or iPhone accessory?
No. These Notes, Files, and Preview workflows use the iPhone camera and Apple software. A separate scanner, stand, book holder, or replacement part is not required for the task.
