You can turn paper pages into a PDF without a dedicated scanner. On an iPhone, Apple Notes, Preview, and Files can capture pages; on Android, Google Drive can scan, adjust, and save them. Google Drive also offers a scan workflow on iPhone and iPad.
The important choices are where the file is saved, whether you need one page or a multi-page PDF, and whether the final file is readable and correctly cropped. A PDF created by a camera scan is not automatically searchable text, so check that requirement separately.
Choose the workflow that matches where you want the PDF
All of the workflows below use the phone camera and support more than one page. They differ mainly in destination and editing controls. The table is a practical choice guide, not a quality ranking; the documented sources do not provide comparative accuracy or image-quality measurements.

Button names and placement can change with an iOS, Android, or app update. If a label differs slightly, look for the scan or camera action in the app listed for your device rather than assuming every phone has the same menu.

Scan a document on iPhone with Apple Notes
Notes is the simplest choice when the scanned document can remain attached to a note. Apple’s Notes guidance states that the finished document is saved as a PDF in that note.
Capture one or more pages
- Open Notes and create a note or open the note where you want the document.
- Tap the note’s attachment control and choose Scan Documents.
- Place the entire page in the camera view. Automatic capture can take the picture when the page is detected. If that does not happen, use manual capture.
- After capture, inspect the detected corners. Drag a corner if the outline cuts off text, includes part of the desk, or is tilted. Keep the page only when the crop is correct.
- Continue capturing pages. Add every page that should belong to the same document before finishing.
- Tap Done. Notes stores the scan as a PDF attachment in the note.
Review and move the Notes PDF
Open the scanned item in the note to review its pages. Notes provides document actions such as viewing the PDF, copying, sharing, renaming, and deleting. Use the share or document action shown on your iPhone to send it to a person, attach it to an email, or move a copy to another app. If you need a file in a particular Files folder, verify that destination after the action completes; the original scan remains associated with the note unless you delete it.
When Notes is the right choice
- Use it for receipts, signed forms, or class notes that you want alongside related text in one note.
- Use manual capture when automatic detection misses the page or triggers too early.
- Do not assume that a PDF in Notes is also present in a Files folder. Export or share it if another app or person needs a separate file.
Use Preview on iPhone for a dedicated PDF workflow
Apple also documents scanning in Preview. Preview is useful when the output should be treated as a PDF rather than as an attachment inside a note.
Build a multi-page PDF
- Open Preview and start its scan command.
- Capture the first page, then use the scan controls to add subsequent pages.
- For each page, correct the crop, rotate the page when necessary, and choose the appropriate color treatment.
- Finish the scan. Preview combines the captured pages into one PDF.
- Save the PDF to the location you want, then reopen it to confirm that every page is present and readable.
Apple describes the resulting PDF as editable in Preview. The exact control names may vary by iOS release, so follow the labels displayed on your device.
Scan directly into Files on iPhone or iPad
Files is the most direct route when you already know the folder in which the document belongs.

- Open Files and navigate to the area where the document should be stored.
- Open the More menu and choose Scan Documents.
- Frame the page and capture it automatically or manually.
- Adjust the page corners. Repeat the capture if the crop, focus, or lighting is unacceptable.
- Add more pages before finishing if the result should be one multi-page PDF.
- Tap Done, choose the destination location, and tap Save.
Because Files asks for a location before saving, this workflow avoids the extra export step that may be needed when a scan starts in Notes. Open the saved file from that folder once to make sure it was stored where expected.
Scan and save a PDF with Google Drive on Android
Google Drive’s Android scanner keeps the result in Drive and provides the broadest set of documented adjustment controls in this comparison. It also lets you save a JPG instead of a PDF when you need an image file.
Capture and adjust the pages
- Open the Google Drive app and tap its camera or scan control.
- Point the camera at the page and capture it. Drive can capture automatically when it detects the page, or you can trigger a manual capture.
- Inspect the proposed crop. Correct the crop and rotate the page if needed.
- Use the available filters or cleanup controls to improve the appearance of the page. If the picture is blurred, clipped, or otherwise unusable, choose the retake action instead.
- Use the delete-page control to remove a bad page. Use the add-page control to keep building the same document.
Choose the output and destination
- Tap Done after all pages are in the correct order.
- Enter a clear filename. Include a date, subject, or reference number if that will help you find it later.
- Choose .pdf as the format. Choose JPG only when an image rather than a document PDF is what the recipient requires.
- Select the Drive folder if you do not want the default location.
- Tap Save.
Google also documents a Drive scan widget for an Android home screen. The widget is a shortcut to the same capture workflow; it does not change the resulting file type or review steps.
Use Google Drive to scan on iPhone or iPad
Google Drive provides a separate scan route on Apple mobile devices for people who keep documents in Drive across platforms.
- Open Google Drive and start Scan from the add control or scan icon.
- Capture the page, then review the crop and other adjustments shown by Drive.
- Add additional pages before saving if the document is more than one page.
- Choose the Drive folder in which the file should live.
- Save the finished scan. Google describes this iPhone and iPad workflow as storing the document in Drive as a PDF.
Drive’s iOS interface may not be identical to its Android interface. If you do not see a particular filter or cleanup option, use the controls available in the current iPhone or iPad app and concentrate on checking the crop, order, and legibility.

Review every scan before you share it
A scan is finished only after the page image and the file destination have been checked. Use this checklist while the paper is still in front of you:

- Orientation: pages are upright and rotate consistently.
- Order: the first page is first, attachments are included, and no page is duplicated.
- Legibility: small type, faint pencil, stamps, and signatures can be read at normal zoom.
- Glare and shadows: reflective patches or a hand covering text are not hiding information.
- Completeness: every page intended for the recipient was added before you tapped Done or Save.
- Destination: the filename and folder or note are the ones you intended.
Automatic capture works best when the phone is held steadily over the page. If the app keeps detecting the wrong boundary, switch to manual capture and correct the corners yourself. A retake is faster than discovering a missing line after the original paper has been put away.
Find, rename, and share the finished PDF
Notes
Return to the note that contains the scan and open the document attachment. Use its document actions to rename it, copy it, or share it through the destination shown by iOS. If another person needs a conventional file attachment, choose a share or export action rather than sending only the note.
Preview
Open the saved PDF in Preview, confirm the page count, and use the app’s save or share action. If you edited the PDF after scanning, save the edited version under a new name when you need to preserve the original capture.
Files
Browse to the folder selected during the scan. Sort or search by the filename you entered, open the PDF to verify it, and use the Files share action to send a copy or open it in another app.

Google Drive
Open the Drive folder chosen at save time and search by the filename if necessary. From the file’s action menu, use the available share, copy-link, download, or open-in-app option that matches the recipient’s needs. Check the sharing scope before sending a link: a link can expose the file to more people than a one-time attachment.
Why a PDF scan may not be searchable
A camera scan places images of pages into a PDF container. That does not, by itself, prove that the letters have been converted into selectable text. The Apple Notes, Preview, Files, and mobile Drive instructions cited for these workflows do not establish identical optical-character-recognition behavior for every device, operating-system version, or app release.
If you need to search, copy, or edit the words, test the actual saved file: try selecting a sentence and searching for a distinctive term. If selection fails, treat the document as image-only and use a separate OCR-capable tool whose current behavior you have verified. Do not promise a searchable PDF merely because the file extension is .pdf.
Troubleshooting common scanning problems
The app will not detect the page
Move the phone higher so the entire sheet is visible, improve the contrast between the paper and the surface, and keep the camera steady. Then switch to manual capture. Manual mode still lets you adjust the corners before accepting the page.

Before keeping the page, drag each corner to the actual paper edge. Zooming in on the preview can reveal a clipped line near a border. Retake the page if a corner handle cannot be placed accurately.

A page is blurred or too dark
Retake it instead of trying to repair an unreadable image later. Hold the phone parallel to the page, avoid casting a shadow across the text, and use the available filter or cleanup control only after the page is in focus.
Pages are in the wrong order
Use the page thumbnails or review screen before saving. Delete the misplaced page and add it again in the required position when the app does not provide a reorder control.
The PDF cannot be found
Check the workflow’s actual destination: the originating Notes note, the folder selected in Files, or the Drive folder and filename entered during capture. Searching by the exact filename is usually faster than browsing every folder.

On Android Drive, reopen the scan workflow and select .pdf before saving. JPG is an intentional alternative for image-only use, not a substitute when a recipient requires a document PDF.
The buttons do not match these instructions
App and operating-system updates can move controls. Look for the current camera, scan, attachment, More, Done, Save, or add-page label in the app installed on your device. Do not install a different scanner simply because an older tutorial shows another layout.
Do you need extra equipment?
No. The built-in camera workflows work without buying a stand or scanner. If you capture many pages and have difficulty holding the phone steady, an adjustable phone document scanning stand can keep the camera positioned consistently; it is an optional convenience, not a requirement of Notes, Preview, Files, or Drive.
