The reliable workflow is to make two files: an untouched, high-quality scan that preserves the printed page, and a separate, game-ready derivative cropped and sized for the exact RPG Maker version and asset category you will use. Do not choose a final canvas from a generic “RPG Maker size.” A map character sheet, face image, picture, title image, battle graphic, and tileset follow different rules.
Before you scan, identify the engine (such as RPG Maker MZ or MV) and the destination asset. Then capture the page safely, retain the original scan, edit a duplicate, remove or preserve the paper background deliberately, and export the derivative in the format and layout required by that project. For MZ image assets, the official help states: “All images must be in the PNG format.”
Start with the destination asset, not the scanner
Write down three decisions before touching the paper:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Which engine? Confirm whether the project uses RPG Maker MZ, MV, or another edition. The official help pages are separate, and a layout convention from one edition should not be assumed to apply to another.
- What will the art become? Choose among a map character, face or portrait, picture shown in an event, title image, battle asset, tileset, or another image type.
- What must remain visible? Decide whether the printed border, registration marks, paper texture, lettering, or bleed is part of the finished look. Do not crop those elements away accidentally.
Open the relevant edition’s asset-standard documentation and note the required file type, sheet arrangement, transparency behavior, and any size guidance before making the final crop. This prevents the common failure in which an attractive illustration has to be cut apart and rebuilt because it was prepared for the wrong asset category.

Handle a zine page without damaging it
Printed zines may be folded, stapled, glossy, brittle, or tightly bound. A clean scan is not worth torn paper or a permanently flattened spine.
When a flatbed scanner is appropriate
A flatbed can provide even lighting and predictable alignment when the page can lie safely on the bed. Use a bed large enough for the page, remove dust from the glass with a suitable clean cloth, and place the page squarely without dragging it across the surface. A flatbed scanner is an option, not a requirement; someone who already has a digital original does not need to scan it again.
Do not force fragile paper flat
The Library of Congress warns: “Don’t place glass or Plexiglas® on top of artwork, documents, manuscripts, prints, photographs, with or without mounts, or other Library materials to flatten for image capture.” Follow that principle for fragile or tightly bound zines. If the page does not naturally rest flat, choose equipment and handling that support the page instead of pressing it down. A page cradle, overhead camera setup, or professional service may be safer than a flatbed for a valuable or delicate issue.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCapture the whole page when possible
Leave a modest margin around the illustration during capture. A full-page source gives you room to correct a slight rotation, preserve a bleed, and make alternate crops later. Tight, in-camera cropping throws away information before you know whether you need it.
Choose a resolution that matches the job
There is no single scanning resolution that is mandatory for every zine illustration. The useful number depends on the physical size of the art, the detail in the printing, how large the final game image will be, and whether you want an archival source for future projects.
| Reference | Published figure or scope | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Smithsonian Institution Archives | At least 600 ppi and 6,000 pixels along the long axis for still-image holdings; preservation files use uncompressed TIFF. | An archival benchmark for preserving a master, not a required setting for a small game derivative. |
| National Archives and Records Administration | Guidance gives 300–400 ppi ranges for color and grayscale textual records, depending on content. | A records-scanning reference; do not present it as a universal illustration setting. |
| FADGI guidance | Specifications vary with printed-material category, dimensions, and intended use. | Use the category and purpose to choose a defensible capture setting rather than copying one number. |
If you want a reusable source and your scanner can produce it cleanly, a high-resolution master is sensible. The Smithsonian figures—600 ppi and 6,000 pixels on the long axis—describe preservation work, not the minimum needed for an RPG Maker picture. Conversely, a low-resolution scan can become visibly soft when you later enlarge it or extract several assets.

Color, grayscale, and bit depth
Scan in color when color is part of the illustration, even if the game will eventually use a limited palette. Color preserves information for later correction and alternate exports. Grayscale can be appropriate for genuinely monochrome art or when color is irrelevant to the final design. Make the decision from the artwork and intended use, not from a desire to reduce file size before editing.

Texture and halftones
Zines often contain paper grain, photocopy noise, or halftone dots. A higher-resolution source gives you more control over whether those marks remain stylistic texture or become distracting speckles at game scale. Inspect a small test area at 100 percent before scanning an entire issue, particularly when the art combines fine line work with a coarse printed screen.
Save a preservation source before editing
Immediately after capture, save the untouched scan under a clear name and make it read-only or otherwise protected from accidental overwriting. The preservation example from the Smithsonian uses uncompressed TIFF for still images. You may use another lossless source format if your workflow requires it, but do not repeatedly save the only copy through lossy edits.
A practical naming pattern records the issue, page, and capture state, for example zine07_p12_master. Keep the original page orientation and do not apply automatic contrast, sharpening, dust removal, or background deletion to this master. Create a duplicate for every editing pass. If an edit goes wrong, return to the duplicate or make a fresh one from the protected source.
Make the editable duplicate
- Duplicate the master. Work on a copy and give it a name that identifies the intended asset, such as
zine07_p12_portrait_edit. - Rotate and straighten. Correct page tilt before making a precise crop. Keep a little surrounding margin until the geometry is right.
- Correct obvious capture defects. If the page has uneven illumination, glare, or a scanner edge, fix those on the duplicate with restrained adjustments. Avoid destroying ink detail while trying to make the paper perfectly white.
- Decide what belongs to the art. Retain a border, registration mark, handwritten note, or paper edge only if it supports the intended in-game presentation.
- Crop non-destructively when possible. Save the crop as an editable document or layer structure so you can revise it without recapturing the page.
Crop the illustration for its role
Single-picture artwork
For an event picture, title image, or other free-positioned graphic, crop to the composition rather than forcing it into a character-sheet grid. Leave enough surrounding space for the way the game will place it. If the picture is meant to fill a window or screen, decide whether the final aspect ratio should match that destination before resizing.
Portraits and face images
Crop around the head or bust with a consistent margin across a set of portraits. Align eyes and shoulders consistently if several faces will appear in the same interface. Keep the source crop larger than the final display size until the expression and important line work survive a test resize.

Character sheets
A character sheet is a structured grid, so crop and resize to the cell layout specified by the target edition. Do not treat a face-image or picture dimension as a character-cell dimension. If the printed illustration contains several poses, isolate each pose first, then place the finished cells on a new sheet so spacing is exact.
Preserve bleed deliberately
Artwork that runs to the edge of the printed page may have been designed with bleed. Decide whether the paper edge is merely a printing artifact or part of the visual. If you remove it, keep the original crop in the source project so you can restore it later.
Remove paper and create a transparent PNG
Transparency is useful when the illustration must sit over a map, interface, or another picture. It is not automatically better: a paper-colored background may be an intentional part of a photocopied or collage aesthetic.

- Work on the duplicate. Keep the master and an opaque edited version intact.
- Separate the subject. Use a selection, mask, or path that follows the inked edge. Avoid a single coarse color-based deletion when the paper and highlights share similar tones.
- Inspect difficult edges. Zoom into hair, thin lines, textured paper, and partially transparent marks. Leftover beige or gray pixels create a halo against a new background.
- Refine the mask. Remove isolated paper islands and soften only the edge pixels that genuinely need antialiasing. Excessive feathering makes line art look blurry at game scale.
- Check both backgrounds. Preview the cutout over a dark and a light color. A fringe that is invisible over white paper often becomes obvious over a dark map.
- Export with transparency preserved. For an MZ image asset, use PNG as specified by the official help. Reopen the exported file to verify that transparent pixels remain transparent.
Do not flatten a transparent image onto white just to make the file look correct in an image viewer. Some viewers display transparency as a checkerboard; that checkerboard is not part of the exported artwork.
Fit the file to RPG Maker’s actual layout
RPG Maker’s image categories are not interchangeable. The engine convention applies to the asset type and edition you selected, not to every image imported into a project.
MZ character-sheet example
RPG Maker MZ’s official help describes a usual character cell as 48×48 pixels, arranged in four directions with three patterns. That means a conventional sheet has three columns and four rows; if every cell is exactly 48×48, the arithmetic produces a 144×192-pixel sheet. Treat that calculation as an explanation of the conventional grid, not as a universal canvas rule. MZ also permits other character sizes, and a different asset category will use a different standard.

When preparing a sheet:
- Place each frame on an identical cell boundary.
- Keep the character’s feet or baseline consistent between directions.
- Ensure no part of a frame crosses into a neighboring cell.
- Check whether the project expects a single-character sheet or a sheet containing multiple characters, then follow that edition’s naming and layout convention.
MV and other editions
MV and MZ have separate official help pages. Confirm the target edition instead of copying an MZ sheet into an MV project, or vice versa. If documentation for your edition or asset type gives a different grid, that specification takes precedence over the 48×48 example.
Pictures, titles, tiles, and battle graphics
These assets are positioned or interpreted differently from character sheets. A picture may be freely positioned and therefore needs no character grid. A tileset must align to the engine’s tile system. A title or battle image may be composed for a particular screen or battle layout. Use the category-specific standard before setting the final canvas; never infer it from a character image.
Resize without sacrificing line quality
Resize only after the crop and mask are stable. Work from the large duplicate, not from a previously exported game file. Choose a resampling method suited to the art: line drawings usually benefit from a method that keeps edges crisp, while heavily textured or photographic material may need a smoother reduction. Inspect the result at 100 percent and at the size it will occupy in the game.
Downscaling can make thin ink disappear; upscaling cannot recreate detail that was never captured. If a character’s feet, face, or key prop becomes unclear at the target size, revisit the crop or capture rather than sharpening aggressively. Excessive sharpening produces dark outlines and ringing around high-contrast edges.
Export and verify the game-ready file
- Set the exact canvas. Confirm width, height, orientation, and pixel alignment against the target asset standard.
- Use the required format. MZ image assets require PNG according to the official help. Preserve an alpha channel when the asset needs transparency.
- Choose a clear derivative name. Distinguish it from the master and editable file, for example
zine07_p12_actor01_mz_ready.png. - Close and reopen the exported file. Check dimensions, transparency, color appearance, and edge quality after the file has been written.
- Import through the project’s normal asset workflow. Put the file in the corresponding project asset location or use the editor’s import process, following the target edition’s instructions.
- Test in the actual project. View the asset in a map, menu, title screen, battle, or event—the place where it will be used. A file that looks correct in an editor can still be offset, clipped, or too small in context.
A decision guide for common capture situations
| Situation | Safer approach | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Loose, sturdy page; art has fine color detail | Flatbed capture with a generous source margin and color mode. | Even lighting and alignment are useful when the page can lie safely. |
| Bound or fragile page that will not lie flat | Use supported, non-pressing capture equipment or a professional service. | Forcing the page flat can damage the zine and violates careful handling guidance. |
| Art will be reused in several game assets | Keep a high-resolution master and make separate derivatives. | One crop may serve a picture, another a portrait, and another a sheet. |
| Art is destined for one small, fixed-size image | Capture enough detail for a clean reduction, then size the derivative to that asset’s standard. | Archival specifications are useful context but are not mandatory game settings. |
| Paper texture is part of the style | Keep the opaque background and test it at game scale. | Automatic background removal would erase an intentional visual element. |
| Subject must overlay another image | Create and inspect a transparent mask, then export PNG where the target asset requires it. | Edge halos and paper-colored remnants are most visible after compositing. |
Troubleshoot the failures that appear most often
The scan is tilted or the crop feels uneven
Return to the editable duplicate, straighten the page, and recrop with the illustration’s actual edges as the reference. If the original capture has too little margin, restore the master and recapture rather than stretching the derivative.

A transparent cutout has a halo
Inspect the mask at high zoom, remove paper-colored fringe pixels, and test again over both light and dark backgrounds. Avoid broad feathering; it often replaces a hard halo with a blurry edge.
The character appears shifted or clipped
Verify the cell width and height, the row and column order, and whether the project expects a single character or a multi-character sheet. Make sure every frame is fully inside its cell and that the sheet follows the target edition’s documentation.
The art looks soft in game
Compare the displayed size with the source pixel dimensions. Softness usually comes from an undersized capture, enlargement, repeated lossy saving, or an inappropriate resampling method. Rebuild the derivative from the untouched master.
Colors differ between the editor and the game
Check the exported file rather than the editor’s preview, then compare it inside the project. A color adjustment made for white paper may look too dark or too saturated against the game’s background. Keep the master unchanged so you can make a controlled alternate correction.
The file is rejected on import
Confirm the extension, encoding, dimensions, and destination asset category. For MZ image assets, verify that the file is PNG. If the file is technically valid but still fails, export a fresh derivative from the editable source and follow the project editor’s normal import workflow.
Use a repeatable file set for every illustration
For each page, maintain three levels:
- Master: the untouched scan, preferably in a lossless preservation format such as uncompressed TIFF when that fits your archival plan.
- Edit: a working document with crop, rotation, masks, and adjustment layers or equivalent editable information.
- Game derivative: the final PNG or other format required by the target edition and asset category, with the exact canvas and layout.
Record the engine, asset category, intended display size, and whether transparency is expected in the file name or a small project note. That information prevents a later contributor from mistaking a 48×48 MZ character cell for a universal RPG Maker image rule.
Final pre-import checklist
- Target engine and asset category are confirmed from the relevant official documentation.
- The physical page was captured without forcing fragile paper flat.
- The untouched source is stored separately from all edits.
- Color or grayscale choice reflects the illustration and intended use.
- The crop preserves every border, bleed, or mark that belongs in the design.
- Transparency was removed only when the asset needs it, and edges were checked on contrasting backgrounds.
- The derivative has the exact required canvas and sheet arrangement.
- The file format matches the target engine; MZ image assets use PNG.
- The exported file was reopened and tested in the actual project context.
That separation—careful capture first, asset-specific preparation second—lets you preserve the zine while still producing clean files that behave predictably in RPG Maker.
