A phone can turn photos of a real object into a 3D model using photogrammetry, but that does not mean the whole job—from capture to a checked, printable file—reliably takes under five minutes. Treat “model created” and “ready to print” as separate milestones: you still need to check the mesh and prepare it in a slicer.
What a phone scan can—and cannot—do
Photogrammetry builds a 3D representation by matching visual landmarks across photographs taken from different angles. Apple’s Object Capture guidance stresses the importance of high-quality, well-lit images. The resulting model represents the surfaces the camera saw; it does not establish hidden geometry, exact dimensions, mechanical fit, or suitability as a replacement part.
App and device support vary. Apple’s Object Capture documentation covers iOS 17 and later and macOS 12 and later, but its iOS availability is limited to select LiDAR devices, and Mac reconstruction has hardware requirements. Epic describes RealityScan Mobile as free to download for iOS and Android, with coverage feedback and model export to the device. Check the app’s current device support and mobile export options before starting.

How to capture photos that are easier to reconstruct
- Keep the object still. A moving or deforming subject can disrupt landmark matching and lead to failure or poor output.
- Photograph it from many angles. Move around the stationary subject and take overlapping views so the same features appear in neighboring images.
- Use even, ample light. Apple advises avoiding hard shadows and strong highlights; higher-resolution, well-lit images support reconstruction.
- Choose a textured, non-reflective subject. RealityScan’s FAQ warns that transparent, shiny, or textureless objects are difficult to scan.
Photogrammetry depends on visible details that can be matched between views. A clear surface with distinct features is a better candidate than a transparent panel, glossy finish, or blank surface. Moving parts can be a problem even when the object itself is stationary.

At only 190g, the INSPIRE 2 is lightweight, and its aerospace-grade aluminum alloy front panel offers increased durability and portability.
Capture and reconstruct the model
- Confirm compatibility. Check that your phone and operating system are supported by the chosen app. For Apple’s Object Capture workflow, support is conditional rather than universal.
- Arrange the subject and lighting. Place the object on a stable surface in even light, with enough room to photograph around it. Avoid conditions that create deep shadows or sharp reflections.
- Take overlapping photos from multiple viewpoints. Include the visible sides, top, and other surfaces you want represented. Keep the object and any movable parts in the same position throughout capture.
- Submit the images for reconstruction. In Apple’s documented workflow, image processing happens after submission in a separate photogrammetry session; the session reports whether processing completed or failed. Reconstruction is therefore a distinct stage from taking the pictures.
- Export the result and inspect it. Save the model in a format your next tool can use, then check its dimensions, holes, and unwanted geometry before slicing.
Epic’s RealityScan Mobile page advertises “From photos to 3D models in minutes.” That is a vendor headline, not a measured guarantee that capture, processing, mesh checks, slicing, and printing all finish in under five minutes. A model may be created quickly while the rest of the print-preparation work remains.
Check the model before sending it to a printer
Exporting a mesh does not prove it is ready to print. The RealityScan desktop documentation lists STL and 3MF export, but that does not establish that the mobile app exports those formats directly. Confirm the formats available in your app and whether they are accepted by your slicer.

Before slicing, inspect the mesh for holes, stray geometry, and scale that does not match your intended object. A scan-to-print research article describes checking an STL for watertightness before printing. The available guidance does not show that every scan needs manual repair, or that every scanning app automatically produces a repaired, watertight mesh; check the file you actually exported.

What “under five minutes” really means
The available evidence supports phone-based photogrammetry and a vendor claim of creating models “in minutes.” It does not establish an end-to-end five-minute result for a print-ready file. Apple’s documented processing runs after photo submission, while mesh inspection and slicer preparation are separate tasks. If you want to demonstrate a specific time, state what the clock includes—capture, processing, inspection, export, or slicing—and identify the device and conditions rather than presenting the title’s timing as a general benchmark.
