The reliable sequence is capture → reconstruct or export → clean the mesh → verify printability → inspect the slicer preview. You can reconstruct a model from overlapping photographs with Meshroom, or export a mesh directly from a compatible 3D scanner. In either case, a scan that looks right is not automatically dimensionally right: measure critical features and test fit when the part must replace an existing component.
This guide shows how to capture a small object, remove background and scan artifacts, make the surface watertight, and check the final solid before printing.
Choose a capture method before you start
There are two practical routes. Photogrammetry uses photographs and reconstruction software to infer the object’s shape. A dedicated scanner records the surface with its own depth-sensing hardware and can usually export a mesh file directly. The better choice depends on what you already have, how controlled your capture area is, and whether the final print is decorative or must match measured dimensions.

| Route | Input and reconstruction | Documented output or cleanup path |
|---|---|---|
| Photogrammetry with Meshroom | 2D photographs processed through camera initialization, feature extraction and matching, structure from motion, depth maps, meshing, filtering and texturing | Meshroom is free and open source; the reconstructed mesh still needs inspection and print preparation |
| Dedicated scanner | Scanner capture followed by mesh export | Structure Capture documentation lists OBJ, STL and PLY export; Blender or MeshLab can remove artifacts and check watertightness |
The available documentation does not establish a universal accuracy percentage, minimum feature size, photo count or success rate for either route. Treat both as shape-capture tools, not as substitutes for a caliper when a hole, shaft, mating face or snap-fit must be exact.

Prepare the object and capture area
Use controlled lighting
Even illumination helps photographs retain usable detail from one view to the next. Meshroom’s capture guidance recommends good lighting and framing the object so it fills most of each image. Avoid harsh moving shadows, glare and exposure changes between shots. Keep the camera and object steady enough that surface features remain recognizable across neighboring views.
Glossy, transparent or featureless objects are difficult because the software needs stable visual features to match. If the object is safe to handle, a removable matte coating or removable texture can make detail easier to reconstruct; do not coat a surface that must remain pristine without confirming that the coating can be removed.
Separate the object from its background
Place the object on a large, structured, nontransparent and nonreflective surface when using Meshroom’s filtering workflow. The MeshFiltering documentation warns that the object can be removed if it is not connected to the larger background mesh. That behavior is counterintuitive: a background that seems undesirable can provide the connected geometry the filter uses to distinguish the object.
Use a background with visible, nonrepeating detail rather than a transparent sheet or mirror-like surface. Keep the object from touching unrelated items that could become connected components in the reconstruction.
Plan for measurement
Before capturing, identify the dimensions that matter to the print: overall length, hole diameter, wall thickness, spacing between mounting points and any surface that must mate with another part. Record them with a ruler or caliper. These measurements become checkpoints after reconstruction and let you correct scale or rebuild a feature instead of trusting a visually convincing scan.
Photogrammetry workflow with Meshroom
1. Take overlapping views
Photograph the complete object from multiple viewpoints, including higher and lower angles that reveal top, side and underside surfaces. Keep enough visual information in common between neighboring views for feature matching. Move around the object rather than relying on a single viewpoint, and include views that expose recesses and occluded edges.

2. Load the images into Meshroom
Meshroom is an AliceVision-based, open-source reconstruction application. Its documented overview describes photogrammetry from images, while the Photogrammetry Pipeline documentation lays out the processing stages.
- Copy the photographs into a working folder and keep the originals unchanged.
- Open Meshroom and add the photographs to the input area.
- Review the image thumbnails for blur, accidental duplicates, severe glare or frames where the object is mostly hidden. Remove unusable frames from the working set.
- Run the default photogrammetry pipeline. Meshroom performs camera initialization, feature extraction and matching, structure from motion, dense-scene preparation, depth-map generation and filtering, meshing, mesh filtering and texturing.
Processing can take substantially longer than capture because depth maps and meshing are computationally intensive. Preserve the project and intermediate results so you can adjust the image set or filtering stage without starting from nothing.
3. Inspect the reconstruction before export
Do not send the first mesh straight to a slicer. Rotate it and look for duplicated surfaces, floating fragments, missing undersides, stretched triangles, holes and a large slab or shell representing the background. Check that the object is a single intended component and that its major features are present.
If the object disappeared during Meshroom filtering, revisit the capture surface and filtering setup. The documented failure mode is that the object may be removed when it is not connected to the larger background mesh. A well-structured, nontransparent, nonreflecting surface can give the filter the geometry it expects.

Export the reconstructed geometry in a format your mesh editor accepts. Keep a copy of the unedited export as a reference. Textures are useful for visual inspection, but a 3D printer ultimately needs the surface geometry and a valid solid; color information does not repair holes or disconnected shells.

Dedicated-scanner workflow
1. Confirm the device and capture conditions
A dedicated scanner can reduce the number of reconstruction steps, but it still needs suitable tracking, lighting and surface visibility. Follow the device’s current capture instructions and confirm that the scanner can see the object’s smallest features. Compatibility and current product details vary by hardware and software version.
2. Export a supported mesh
The manufacturer’s Structure Sensor 3 support guidance says Structure Capture can export OBJ, STL or PLY. Export the format that preserves the information you need for cleanup, and retain the original scan so edits are reversible.
3. Expect cleanup after scanning
The same guidance recommends scanning, cleaning with Blender or MeshLab, removing artifacts and checking watertightness. A scanner can still capture the turntable, support, hands, floor or nearby objects. It can also leave holes where the sensor could not see, especially in deep recesses and on the underside.

Clean the mesh in Blender or MeshLab
Use a mesh editor for visual cleanup and repairs. Blender is useful when you also need alignment, measurements or solid modeling; MeshLab is a focused option for inspecting and editing scan meshes. Work on a duplicate of the exported file and save incremental versions.
1. Remove background geometry and stray islands
Start in a solid, shaded view and rotate around the model. Select the floor, support, turntable, camera rig and disconnected fragments that are not part of the object, then delete them. Large unwanted surfaces can hide holes and distort the model’s bounding box, so remove them before measuring scale.
After deletion, check from the underside and inside cavities. A tiny floating island can create an unwanted shell in the slicer even when it is invisible from the outside. Keep only geometry that belongs to the intended printed object.

2. Separate the intended component from connected noise
Background geometry can be physically connected to the object in a scan. In that case, isolate the object by selecting connected regions or by cutting away the background along a clear boundary. Inspect the cut edge for accidental removal of a flange, foot or thin wall.
3. Repair holes and open boundaries
Scan data commonly has missing areas where the camera or sensor had no line of sight. Identify open boundaries and fill them only when the fill represents the object’s real shape. A flat cap may be appropriate for a hidden base; it is not an accurate replacement for a curved or textured surface.
For a functional part, compare every repaired area with your measurements, photographs and the physical object. If an internal feature cannot be recovered confidently, model that feature explicitly rather than pretending the scan measured it.
4. Check normals and overlapping surfaces
Surface orientation tells the slicer which side is inside and outside. Look for faces that appear shaded backwards, duplicate shells occupying the same space and thin self-intersections around repairs. Recalculate or flip normals as needed, then inspect the result again in a solid view.
5. Control excessive mesh density
Photogrammetry and scanners can produce many more triangles than a small printer needs. Dense geometry can slow editing and slicing, but aggressive decimation can erase holes, edges and embossed details. Simplify a copy, compare it with the original and preserve a higher-density version until the print has been validated.

Blender’s 4.0 manual describes the 3D Print Toolbox as a way to analyze mesh problems that can affect slicing. Enable the add-on in Blender’s Preferences, open its panel in the 3D View sidebar and run the available checks on the selected object. Review the reported non-manifold edges, intersecting or loose geometry and other warnings, then repair the underlying mesh and run the checks again.

“In order to correctly slice a mesh, it needs to be ‘watertight’, meaning that the surface is closed everywhere.”
A watertight mesh is a closed surface with no unintended openings. It is not merely a model that looks solid from one angle: the outside and inside boundaries must form a continuous printable volume.

Set a known scale
Many scan workflows do not guarantee real-world units. Compare a measured reference dimension with the imported mesh and apply a uniform scale correction when the error is consistent. Recheck more than one dimension afterward; a single matching length can hide nonuniform distortion.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Measure critical features independently
Check hole diameters, center-to-center spacing, wall thickness, angles and mating faces against the physical object. Photogrammetry can reconstruct the appearance of a feature while shifting its exact boundary, and a scanner can miss a narrow recess. For replacement parts, model or constrain critical geometry directly when the scan is not trustworthy.
Separate cosmetic from functional accuracy
A decorative figurine can tolerate small shape deviations that would ruin a bearing seat or threaded interface. Decide which surfaces need a close fit, which can be sanded, and which only need to look correct. The available documentation does not define a universal dimensional-accuracy threshold for small-object scans, so acceptance must come from your measurements and fit test.
Check the model in your slicer
- Import the cleaned mesh into the slicer you will use for printing.
- Confirm the displayed units and set the intended dimensions before placing the object on the build plate.
- Orient the model so the required faces, supports and layer direction match the design intent.
- Look for warnings about non-manifold geometry, open surfaces, inverted normals or disconnected parts.
- Use the layer preview from the first layer through the highest layer. Check that holes remain open, thin walls are represented, internal cavities are not accidentally filled and no unwanted islands appear.
- Inspect support generation and overhangs. A scan may include rough surfaces that create more support than the original object needs.
- Preview travel and infill around repaired areas. Unexpected gaps or solid blocks can reveal a mesh problem that was not obvious in the editor.
The slicer preview is the final check of what will be converted into toolpaths. If it does not show the intended solid, return to the mesh editor instead of trying to correct the problem with print settings alone.
Troubleshoot common scan failures
The reconstruction is incomplete
- Add clearer views of the missing surface, especially undersides and deep recesses.
- Improve lighting and reduce glare so matching features remain visible.
- Make the object fill more of each frame while retaining enough surrounding context for tracking.
- Use a structured, nonreflective, nontransparent capture surface.
The background became part of the object
- Delete disconnected background islands in the mesh editor.
- If the background is fused to the object, isolate the object at a clear boundary and inspect the cut edge.
- Repeat the reconstruction with a cleaner setup when removal would destroy an important feature.
The model has holes or will not slice
- Locate open boundaries with the mesh analysis tools.
- Fill only holes whose shape can be justified by the physical object or a measured design.
- Repair flipped normals, duplicate faces and self-intersections.
- Run the watertightness and other 3D Print Toolbox checks again before exporting.
The print is the wrong size
- Verify the mesh unit interpretation on import.
- Compare several measured dimensions, not only the overall length.
- Apply a uniform scale correction only when the error is consistent in every direction.
- Redesign critical interfaces from measurements if the scan is distorted.
The slicer shows unexpected islands or filled cavities
- Return to the editor and remove loose shells.
- Inspect internal faces and overlapping surfaces.
- Check normals and confirm that repaired walls form one closed volume.
- Re-export, reload the mesh and repeat the complete layer preview.
A repeatable pre-print checklist
- Every intended surface was visible in multiple capture views.
- Lighting and framing preserved detail in the source images.
- The reconstruction contains the object rather than the capture setup.
- Background slabs, supports and floating fragments are removed.
- Critical dimensions were measured independently.
- Missing regions were repaired according to the physical object or a deliberate design.
- Normals, duplicate shells and self-intersections were checked.
- The mesh passes watertightness analysis.
- The imported scale and orientation are correct.
- The slicer preview shows the intended walls, holes, cavities and islands from bottom to top.
What to expect from the finished scan
The result should be a closed, single printable volume that represents the object closely enough for its purpose. Photogrammetry offers an accessible route from ordinary photographs, while a dedicated scanner can provide direct OBJ, STL or PLY export. Neither route removes the need for inspection: capture conditions influence reconstruction, filters can remove or retain unwanted geometry, and visually plausible surfaces can still have incorrect dimensions.
For a decorative copy, cleanup and slicer inspection may be sufficient. For a functional replacement, use the scan as a starting shape, verify every critical measurement, and remodel features that control fit or mechanical performance.
