Scale a backend service only after you can show what is limiting it. Set a performance target, observe real traffic and resource behavior, identify the constrained component, make a targeted change, and measure again. More CPU, Redis, or another service may help in the right case—but none is a sound default without evidence.

Define what good performance means

“Fast” is not a useful scaling target on its own. Decide what outcome matters for this service and workload before changing capacity. For example, specify an acceptable response time for an important request under the traffic level you expect, or define the throughput the service must sustain while meeting that response-time goal.

The target should reflect the requests users care about, not just a single average across all traffic. A service can appear healthy on average while a particular endpoint or a subset of requests is slow. Be explicit about which responses and conditions your target covers.

Observe load and behavior before changing capacity

Use measurements from actual operation to understand both demand and the service’s response to it. Requests per second and CPU utilization are useful starting observations, but neither answers the scaling question by itself. A high request rate does not prove that compute is the constraint, and low CPU does not prove the system has spare capacity if requests are waiting elsewhere.

Look at the relevant request timings and the behavior of the components involved. Metrics show patterns over time; logs provide event detail; traces can follow a request through services and dependencies. The aim is to find where time is spent or work is backing up, not to collect data without a question.

Find the bottleneck before adding capacity

A backend response depends on the components that handle the request. If a database is the limiting component, adding CPU cores to an application server may not improve the response. If the application is doing expensive compute work, a database change may be beside the point. Identify the constraint that is affecting the target you defined, then choose a change that addresses it.

For a slow API response, tracing can help distinguish time spent in the API process from time spent in a downstream service or database. Follow the slow request through its path, compare the timing of its components, and investigate the part that accounts for the delay. A response-time number alone identifies a symptom, not its cause.

When does a service need Redis or another component?

Only add Redis, OpenSearch, or another component when the observed workload and bottleneck support that choice. A new component can address a specific need, but it also adds another system to configure, monitor, secure, and operate. If measurements do not show that it addresses the constraint, the added complexity may deliver no meaningful improvement.

Apply the same reasoning to scaling existing infrastructure. More capacity is appropriate when the constrained resource is the one being expanded and the change is expected to improve the service’s target behavior. If the bottleneck is elsewhere, scaling the wrong layer can increase cost without resolving the delay.

Choose observability tools around the questions you need answered

There is no universally best monitoring tool for every backend. Choose based on the visibility you need and the operational model you can support. A managed solution may suit a team willing to pay to reduce the burden of running the monitoring system. An open-source option may suit a team that wants more control and can take responsibility for operating it.

Make one targeted change, then measure again

  1. Set the target. Define the response-time or throughput outcome that matters for the workload.
  2. Establish a baseline. Observe incoming load and the service’s behavior while the relevant requests are slow or under pressure.
  3. Locate the constraint. Use component-level measurements and, where useful, traces to determine where work is delayed or resources are constrained.
  4. Change the relevant layer. Add capacity or a component only when it addresses the identified constraint.
  5. Compare against the baseline. Check whether the change improved the target under comparable conditions, and whether it introduced operational costs or new constraints.

This is a practical diagnostic sequence, not a guarantee that a particular change will work. If the target remains unmet, measure the system again: the limiting component may have changed, or the original diagnosis may have been incomplete.
