Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
Scale an Ubuntu VPS application in stages. Measure the workload first, remove inefficient code and database work, then resize the VPS while one node is still an acceptable operating model. When a single machine becomes a capacity or reliability limit, run multiple replaceable application instances behind nginx or another load balancer, move sessions and files out of local disk, and add health checks, monitoring, backups, and tested recovery.
Kubernetes is optional, not a prerequisite. It becomes worthwhile when repeatable container deployment, replica management, and metric-driven autoscaling justify the additional networking, storage, security, and observability work. For many small applications, two well-managed Ubuntu VPS instances are easier to operate than a Kubernetes cluster.

Scaling is the controlled increase of an application’s capacity and resilience as traffic, data, background work, or uptime expectations grow. It is not synonymous with buying a larger server. A web application can be constrained by CPU, memory, disk latency, network throughput, database connections, slow queries, queue depth, or a single component that cannot be replaced during maintenance.
Ubuntu Server supplies the building blocks for each stage: nginx and Apache2 for web serving, MySQL and PostgreSQL for databases, container and virtualization tooling, performance guidance, high-availability components, logging, monitoring, and alerting. Canonical describes Ubuntu Server as providing economic and technical scalability for data centers. Those components still need to be assembled around the needs of your application; Ubuntu does not publish one throughput number that applies to every VPS or codebase.

Start with a measurable baseline
Do not change instance size or add nodes because a graph “looks busy.” Capture a representative peak and a quiet period, record the current configuration, and define what a successful change means. Establish a service-level objective (SLO), a rollback plan, and an owner for each change before increasing capacity.
Record application and infrastructure signals
- Traffic: requests per second, concurrent requests, request mix, and traffic by endpoint.
- Latency: p50, p95, and p99 response times. Averages can hide a small but important group of very slow requests.
- Errors: HTTP 4xx and 5xx rates, application exceptions, failed jobs, and timeout counts.
- CPU: utilization, run-queue pressure, and whether one process or worker is consuming the available cores.
- Memory: resident usage, cache, reclaim pressure, swap activity, and out-of-memory events.
- Storage: read and write latency, I/O wait, throughput, filesystem fullness, and database checkpoint or log pressure.
- Network: ingress and egress throughput, packet errors, connection counts, and proxy saturation.
- Database: active connections, pool exhaustion, lock waits, slow queries, transaction rate, and replica lag where replicas exist.
- Queues: queue depth, oldest-job age, worker utilization, retry rate, and dead-letter volume.
Ubuntu documentation covers monitoring, logging, and alerting topics, but it does not set a universal “scale at 70 percent CPU” rule. Thresholds depend on the workload and its SLO. For example, a latency-sensitive API may need headroom while CPU is only moderately utilized, whereas an offline image-processing queue may safely run at a higher sustained load.
Correlate symptoms before choosing a remedy
High CPU with a growing request queue points toward compute or inefficient code. High latency with idle CPU can indicate database locks, disk wait, a full connection pool, or an upstream timeout. Memory growth accompanied by swap activity usually requires finding a leak or reducing per-worker memory before simply adding more traffic. A rising queue with healthy web latency may require more workers or a faster job rather than more web servers.
Stage one: remove avoidable bottlenecks
Efficiency is capacity. Fixing a query or eliminating unnecessary work often increases capacity more safely than adding hardware, and it reduces the number of nodes you must operate later.
Profile the application path
Use request traces, application profiles, and representative production-like workloads to identify slow handlers, excessive serialization, repeated remote calls, and unbounded loops. Separate time spent in application code from time waiting on a database, cache, queue, filesystem, or external service. Tune one bottleneck at a time and compare the same p95 and error measurements after each change.
Tune database work
Inspect slow queries and execution plans, add indexes that match actual filters and joins, and remove queries that fetch data the page never uses. Keep transactions short and review lock contention. Connection pools should be sized in relation to database limits and the number of application workers; increasing both blindly can turn a web-tier problem into database exhaustion.

Cache and compress safe content
Cache read-heavy data when staleness is acceptable and define invalidation rules before enabling it. Compress and cache static assets, set suitable browser and proxy cache headers, and avoid regenerating identical files on every request. Do not cache personalized or security-sensitive responses without a design that prevents one user’s data being served to another.

Move long work off the request path
Send email, report generation, media processing, and other long-running tasks to a queue. Return a durable job identifier to the caller, monitor queue age, and make workers idempotent so retries do not duplicate side effects. Scaling the web tier cannot solve a background queue that has no available workers.
Check process and operating limits
Review file-descriptor limits, worker counts, keep-alive settings, request and upstream timeouts, connection-pool limits, and log volume. These values are workload-specific; a setting that works for a small API may fail for a WebSocket service or a large-upload endpoint. Change them deliberately and watch error and latency metrics after each adjustment.
Stage two: vertical scaling while one node remains simple
Vertical scaling means assigning the existing VPS more CPU, memory, faster storage, or greater network allowance. It is usually the lowest-coordination option: no load-balancer topology, shared-session design, or cross-node deployment is required. It is appropriate when measurements show a local resource bottleneck and a single-node failure domain is acceptable.
Use Ubuntu’s installation figures correctly
Canonical’s Ubuntu 24.04 LTS amd64 system-requirements reference lists 1 GB of RAM and 4 GB of storage as minimums for cloud images, with suggested minimums of 3 GB of RAM and 25 GB of storage. The figures are from the 2025 documentation branch and describe installation suitability, not production application capacity. A database, language runtime, reverse proxy, background workers, logs, and monitoring can require substantially more resources before serving meaningful traffic.
| Figure | What it describes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 1 GB RAM | Minimum Ubuntu 24.04 LTS amd64 cloud-image guidance | Requests per second, latency, or a safe production workload |
| 4 GB storage | Minimum cloud-image storage guidance | Room for application data, logs, database files, backups, or growth |
| 3 GB RAM | Suggested cloud-image minimum | A universal size for a web application |
| 25 GB storage | Suggested cloud-image minimum | Capacity for user uploads, database growth, snapshots, or retention policies |
Resize when CPU saturation, memory pressure, storage latency, or network allowance is the measured constraint. Confirm that the provider can change the resource independently or requires a reboot, and schedule the operation with a rollback path. Recheck application metrics after the resize; a larger machine does not fix an unindexed query, a leaking worker, or a database lock.
Know when vertical scaling has stopped being the right answer
- The provider’s next size is unavailable, disproportionately expensive, or still leaves an important resource constrained.
- A maintenance event or host failure would create unacceptable downtime.
- Deployments require taking the only application node out of service.
- Traffic is variable enough that a permanently larger machine would leave substantial capacity idle.
- Different components need different scaling rates, such as a read-heavy web tier and a CPU-heavy worker tier.
At that point, adding a second application node can improve both capacity and failure-domain separation, but only after the application is prepared for it.
Stage three: make the application tier horizontally scalable
Horizontal scaling runs two or more equivalent application instances and distributes requests among them. The nodes must be replaceable: a request should succeed regardless of which healthy instance receives it, and a node should be safe to remove during a deploy or failure.

Put a reverse proxy or load balancer in front
Place nginx or an equivalent proxy at the public entry point. It terminates or forwards connections, selects a healthy backend, applies request limits and timeouts, and can drain existing connections before a node is stopped. The exact arrangement depends on the VPS provider and application protocol; HTTP, long-lived connections, TLS termination, and WebSockets may require different proxy settings.
Configure health checks that test the application’s ability to serve traffic rather than merely checking whether a process has a listening socket. A useful check can verify critical dependencies with a short timeout, while a separate deeper diagnostic endpoint can expose dependency detail only to authenticated operators. Remove an unhealthy node from rotation, investigate it, and add it back only after it passes the same checks.
Keep application nodes stateless
Build identical images or packages, apply the same configuration through a repeatable process, and avoid hand-edited differences between nodes. Store secrets outside the application image and rotate them consistently. A node should be disposable: replacing it should not delete user data or invalidate every active session.
Handle deploys without dropping traffic
- Build and validate the new application version.
- Start it on a new or drained instance and run readiness checks.
- Remove the old instance from load-balancer rotation while allowing active requests to finish.
- Shift traffic gradually or all at once according to the risk of the change.
- Watch latency, errors, database load, and queue behavior.
- Roll back by returning traffic to the known-good version if the SLO is violated.
Externalize state before adding more nodes
Horizontal web nodes do not remove state; they move the design question to shared services. Treat the database, cache, queue, object or shared file storage, and backup system as separate scaling domains with their own limits and recovery plans.
Sessions
Use a shared session store or a deliberately stateless session design. If sessions remain only on local disk or in process memory, a user can appear logged out whenever the load balancer selects another node. Cookie-based sessions must be signed and protected, and their size and expiration policy should fit the application’s security requirements. Load-balancer stickiness can mask a flawed session design, but it keeps users tied to individual nodes and weakens failover; treat it as a specific compatibility choice rather than the default solution.
Uploads and generated files
Local ephemeral storage is not a durable upload system. Put user uploads and generated artifacts on shared or object storage, or provide a replication and recovery design that is tested under failure. Ensure that application nodes agree on naming, permissions, retention, and deletion behavior. A successful upload followed by a request to a different node must return the same file.
Databases
Plan connection limits, indexes, backups, restore tests, replication, and failover independently of web-node count. Read replicas can help read-heavy workloads, but they introduce lag and do not automatically solve write contention. A database that remains a single point of failure can make several redundant web nodes appear highly available while the service is still fragile.

Caches and queues
Define whether cached data may be lost and how it will be rebuilt. For queues, make jobs idempotent, persist messages for the required recovery window, and monitor the oldest pending job rather than only worker CPU. Scale workers according to queue age and completion time, not simply by matching the number of web nodes.
Backups and recovery
Back up databases, configuration, secrets metadata, and user files according to their business value. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan. Test restores on a schedule, record the time required, and document the steps operators will follow during a node, disk, database, or region failure.
Choosing among a larger VPS, multiple VPS instances, and Kubernetes
Compare the options against your actual traffic pattern, team skills, failure requirements, and deployment frequency. The table is a decision aid, not a performance benchmark; no workload-independent requests-per-second or cost figure is established by Ubuntu’s installation guidance.
| Option | Operational complexity | Failure-domain reduction | State requirements | Autoscaling | Observability burden | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Resize one VPS | Lowest; one operating environment | None beyond the provider’s host redundancy | Local state can remain, although backups are still required | Usually manual or provider-specific | One node and its services | A measured local bottleneck when a single-node outage is acceptable |
| Multiple Ubuntu VPS instances behind a proxy | Moderate; deployment, health checks, and shared services | Removes dependence on one application node; shared services may remain single points of failure | Sessions, uploads, files, databases, queues, and backups must be designed for sharing or failover | Can be scripted or provider-supported; policy is yours to operate | Cross-node logs, metrics, traces, and proxy visibility | Growing applications that need capacity and rolling deploys without a full orchestrator |
| Containers with Kubernetes | Highest; control plane, networking, storage, images, security, and upgrades | Can spread replicas and infrastructure when designed and provisioned for it | Persistent volumes, external databases, secrets, and recovery procedures require explicit design | Deployments and Horizontal Pod Autoscaler support replica changes when metrics exist | Cluster-wide telemetry, events, logs, metrics, and alerting | Teams that need repeatable container scheduling, many services, or automated replica management |
Provider lock-in and total cost should be included in the comparison. A managed control plane can reduce some maintenance while adding service-specific dependencies; self-managed Kubernetes gives more control but transfers upgrades, security, and failure handling to your team. A pair of ordinary VPS instances may deliver the required resilience with fewer moving parts.
When containers or Kubernetes are justified
Containers make application nodes reproducible and separate the application artifact from the host. They are useful before Kubernetes when you want consistent builds and repeatable deployment on one or several Ubuntu machines. Containerizing an application does not, by itself, make sessions, files, or databases shareable.
Kubernetes adds an API for desired state and workload management. A Deployment exposes a replica count; changing it with kubectl scale changes the requested number of replicas. For example, a Deployment named web can be changed with kubectl scale deployment web --replicas=6. The command changes the desired count; it does not guarantee that six pods are healthy, that the nodes have room, or that the database can handle the additional connections.
Horizontal Pod Autoscaler can vary replicas between a configured minimum and maximum, but Kubernetes documentation explicitly requires a metrics source for automatic scaling. CPU or memory metrics alone may not represent user experience; request latency, queue age, or custom business signals may be better indicators when they are collected reliably.

Account for Kubernetes’ operational cost
- Control-plane availability and upgrades must be planned.
- Networking, ingress, service discovery, and TLS require configuration and monitoring.
- Persistent storage needs a failure and backup model; pods are replaceable, data is not.
- Container images, registries, dependency updates, and vulnerability response become part of operations.
- Access control, secret handling, policy enforcement, and audit logs add security work.
- Cluster-wide logs, metrics, traces, events, and alerts are necessary to diagnose scheduling and networking failures.
Choose Kubernetes when these capabilities solve a real coordination problem, not because the application has reached a particular request count. If a small team operates one or two services, a simpler multi-VPS design can be more reliable because it is easier to understand and recover.

Troubleshooting common scaling failures
Adding CPU did not lower latency
Check database wait time, lock contention, connection-pool exhaustion, upstream calls, disk latency, and application-level serialization. If the workers spend most of their time waiting, more CPU will not address the limiting dependency.
Memory usage rises after adding workers
Measure memory per worker, account for runtime caches, and check for leaks. More workers multiply per-process memory and can exhaust the node even when average CPU falls. Reduce concurrency, fix the leak, or add memory only after confirming the behavior.
Users lose sessions after a second node is added
Verify whether sessions are stored in process memory or local files. Move them to a shared, durable design or use a correctly signed stateless session. Do not rely on stickiness as a substitute for a session architecture that survives node loss.
Files exist on one node but not another
Local uploads and generated files are not shared automatically. Move them to shared or object storage, define consistency and permissions, and test a download through every application node.

The proxy sends traffic to a broken instance
Make the health check exercise a meaningful readiness condition, shorten failure detection within the application’s tolerance, and drain connections before maintenance. Confirm that the proxy observes the same address, port, TLS mode, and protocol that real clients use.
Kubernetes does not add replicas automatically
Check that the Horizontal Pod Autoscaler has a working metrics source, that minimum and maximum replica limits permit the desired change, and that nodes have sufficient capacity. A replica policy cannot create compute, storage, or database capacity that does not exist.
Reliability grows with capacity
More nodes increase the number of components that can fail and the number of interactions operators must understand. Add alerting for SLO violations, health-check failures, memory pressure, disk fullness and latency, database saturation, queue age, backup failures, and replication lag where applicable. Keep runbooks current, document ownership, and review capacity before predictable traffic events.
Ubuntu’s documentation treats high availability and observability as first-class server topics. On Ubuntu 23.04 and later guidance, the pcs command is identified as the recommended Pacemaker management tool. Pacemaker tooling can coordinate high-availability resources, but it does not replace application health checks, tested backups, or a design that handles split-brain and data consistency safely.
