If your Gemini chat list is empty after an outage, do not assume the conversations were deleted. First check Google’s Workspace Status Dashboard, then open Gemini Apps Activity or My Activity in the same Google Account. For a durable copy, export Gemini Apps activity with Google Takeout and save important answers as downloadable files or files in Drive. Takeout gives you an archive to keep; Google’s instructions do not document importing that archive back into Gemini as a restored conversation.
What to do first when Gemini history disappears
Preserve the current state before repeatedly signing out, changing settings, or deleting anything. An empty sidebar can be a visibility problem caused by a service incident rather than proof that your conversations no longer exist.
- Check the Workspace Status Dashboard. Look for a Gemini incident affecting conversation history or saved conversations. Google’s February 2026 incident report described empty sidebars and missing saved conversations. The report said engineers had identified a background process causing missing conversation metadata, stopped that process, and were working to restore histories.
- Open activity outside the chat sidebar. On the web, use Gemini Settings & Help > Activity to reach your activity, or open My Activity directly. In the mobile app, open the profile menu and choose Gemini Apps Activity when that option is available.
- Stay signed in while you investigate. Do not clear account data or change the Google Account until you have checked which account contains the activity.
- Make a separate copy of anything you can still open. Download a response as a text or Markdown file, or export it to Drive, before attempting more troubleshooting.
The February 2026 workaround was incident-specific. It is useful when a similar visibility problem occurs, but it is not a permanent service-level promise that every future outage will use the same menus or restore every conversation.
Why did my Gemini chat history disappear?
There are four materially different explanations. Treating all of them as deletion can lead you to overlook a recoverable account or service problem.

A missing sidebar alone cannot distinguish these cases. Use the activity view and the account and settings checks below before concluding that a chat is gone.
Check the account and activity settings
Confirm the Google Account
Open Gemini and inspect the account indicator. Compare it with the account shown in My Activity or Gemini Apps Activity. Personal and work accounts can be open in different browser profiles or app sessions, so an account switch can make an intact history appear missing. If you use more than one account, check each one without deleting or altering the others.
Inspect Gemini Apps Activity
Use Gemini’s activity link or My Activity to search for the date and subject of the missing conversation. This view is the most useful check when the chat list is not rendering. A record there indicates that the account still has activity even if the sidebar is temporarily unavailable; it does not by itself guarantee that the conversation can be reopened in exactly the same interface.
Check Keep Activity on a personal account
For personal accounts, recent-chat features depend on Keep Activity being enabled. If it is off, new conversations are not expected to appear in Gemini Apps Activity. Review the setting before creating more chats so you know whether future work will be retained in the history view.

Ask a Workspace administrator about managed accounts
Work and school accounts can have administrator-controlled settings, retention behavior, or feature availability. If the activity controls are locked, missing, or different from those on a personal account, contact the organization’s Workspace administrator. An administrator may need to confirm whether Gemini activity is allowed, how long it is retained, and whether an organizational policy explains the missing history.
What Keep Activity off means for a missing conversation
Google Gemini Apps Help states: “Even when Keep Activity is off, your conversations will be saved with your account for up to 72 hours to allow Google to provide the service and process any feedback. This activity won’t appear in your Gemini Apps Activity.”
The wording describes temporary account storage for service and feedback processing, not a guaranteed recovery window. It does not promise that a user can browse, reopen, or export a conversation during those 72 hours. If a chat matters, turn the answer into a separate file as soon as it is available rather than waiting for temporary retention to make it visible.

Google Takeout is the durable-account-copy option. It creates an archive of selected data; it is not a live mirror of the Gemini sidebar. Start while signed in to the same Google Account that created the conversations.

- Open Google Takeout and begin a new export.
- Choose My Activity. Open the activity-data selector so you can choose the specific activity type rather than exporting unrelated account data.
- Deselect other activity types if you only need Gemini conversations.
- Select Gemini Apps activity. This selection can include conversations, generated media, and uploads associated with the activity.
- Select Gemini separately if you need Gems data. Gems are a separate selection; choosing Gemini Apps activity alone is not the same as choosing every Gems-related data category.
- Continue to the delivery options. Choose email delivery or an available cloud destination such as Drive or Dropbox, then choose the archive format offered by Takeout, such as ZIP or TGZ.
- Create the export. Google says archive creation can take a few hours to several days. The download link is generally sent when the archive is ready.
- Download and store the archive securely. Keep it in a location that is backed up and protected, especially if chats contain personal, business, or uploaded information.
Takeout is not instantaneous. Data changed after you submit the request but before Google creates the archive may not be included. If you continue an important chat during that interval, request another export or save the new material as a file.
For an ordinary Takeout export, Google says downloading Gemini Apps activity does not delete it from Google’s servers. The export is therefore a copy, not a move. Keep the archive until you have confirmed that the files you need open correctly.
Save an important Gemini answer as a separate file
History is convenient for continuing a conversation, but it depends on the account, settings, and availability of the Gemini service. A generated file gives you a copy outside the chat-history interface.

When a response is valuable, ask Gemini to format it as plain text or Markdown. For example, enter: Format this answer as a clean Markdown document with headings, lists, and no commentary outside the document. Use the download control when Gemini offers one, or export the result to Drive when that option is available.

Save the source material with the answer
Include the prompt, the final answer, relevant dates, and any uploaded-file names in the saved document. This context makes the file useful even if the original thread cannot be reopened. For a procedure, also save the version or settings that the answer depended on.
Do not confuse a file with a restored chat
A downloaded text or Markdown file preserves the content, not the original Gemini conversation object, sidebar position, or chat metadata. It is a practical backup for reading and editing elsewhere. It does not reconstruct a deleted chat or provide a documented way to import a Takeout archive into Gemini.
How to recover a Gemini chat after an outage
Use the branch that matches what you find in the activity view.

- Leave the account and activity data unchanged while the incident is active.
- Use Gemini’s web Settings & Help > Activity path or My Activity to see whether records are still accessible outside the sidebar.
- Follow the status notice for updates and retry the sidebar after Google reports mitigation or restoration.
- Once the conversation reappears, save important answers as files and create a Takeout export if you need a broader archive.
The February 2026 notice said engineers were working to restore missing histories after stopping the process that caused missing metadata. That report supports waiting for a service fix in that incident; it does not establish a universal restoration procedure for unrelated outages.

If activity exists but the sidebar does not
Keep the account unchanged and use the activity record as your reference. Try the web interface if the mobile app is affected, or the app if the web sidebar is affected. Save any answer that opens. If the activity record remains but the conversation cannot be reopened, preserve the available content and avoid assuming that an archive import will rebuild it.
If neither activity nor the sidebar shows the chat
Recheck the account, Keep Activity, and any Workspace policy. Consider whether the conversation was deleted or created while activity saving was disabled. If no record and no independent copy remain, the official materials do not promise an end-user recovery path.
If you changed Keep Activity recently
Review the setting and the timing of the conversation. Google’s stated “up to 72 hours” temporary storage when Keep Activity is off is not a guaranteed way to retrieve a missing chat. Search activity promptly, but do not treat the period as a deadline that ensures recovery.

A practical backup routine for future Gemini work
- Decide what is irreplaceable. Mark outputs that would be expensive or impossible to recreate, such as research notes, code explanations, project plans, or decisions.
- Save those outputs immediately. Export the response to a file or Drive while the conversation is open.
- Record context. Keep the prompt, date, account or workspace context, and any files used to generate the answer with the saved output.
- Use Takeout for account-level coverage. Request a Gemini Apps activity export on a schedule appropriate to the importance of the work, remembering that it is an archive request rather than an instant snapshot.
- Protect the copies. Store archives and files in a backed-up location with access controls suitable for their contents.
- Verify occasionally. Open a sample file and confirm that your archive downloads and extracts correctly instead of discovering a storage problem during an outage.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Empty sidebar, incident listed: use My Activity or Gemini Apps Activity and wait for the incident-specific restoration update.
- Empty sidebar, no incident listed: verify the Google Account, check Keep Activity, and ask a Workspace administrator if it is a managed account.
- Activity record found, chat will not open: save any visible content, try the other supported interface, and do not treat the record as proof that a full conversation export or reimport is available.
- Takeout export missing a recent exchange: remember that changes made after the request and before archive creation may not be included; create another export or save the exchange as a file.
- Need Gems as well as chats: select the separate Gemini data category in Takeout in addition to Gemini Apps activity.
- Keep Activity is off: search promptly, but regard the stated up-to-72-hour storage as temporary service retention, not a recovery guarantee.
- No activity and no saved copy: the available official guidance does not provide a user procedure to restore a conversation from nothing or to import a Takeout archive into Gemini.
What recovery can and cannot promise
An outage can hide conversation history without deleting it, and the activity views can remain useful while the sidebar is unavailable. Correct-account and settings checks resolve many apparent disappearances. Takeout and separately saved files reduce the impact of the next incident.
However, an archive is not documented as a restorable Gemini conversation, temporary retention with Keep Activity off is not a guaranteed recovery window, and organization policies can change what a Workspace user can see or export. When both activity records and the Gemini interface lack a conversation, avoid promising restoration; rely on any independent file or archive copy you created.
