Save a Twitch broadcast while it is still available: enable Store Past Broadcasts before you go live, then download each recording from Creator Dashboard → Content → Video Producer or export it to a connected YouTube account. Twitch’s current retention rules are 60 days for Partners, Prime users and Turbo users, 14 days for Affiliates, and 7 days for other broadcasters. The vertical version of a dual-format VOD and the 2K version of a VOD expire after 7 days, even when a horizontal or 1080p version remains longer.
What you need to save before anything disappears
Twitch VOD preservation has two separate parts: making sure Twitch records the broadcast, and creating a copy somewhere you control. If Store Past Broadcasts was disabled when you streamed, Twitch does not create a past broadcast that you can later download, highlight or clip. If a saved VOD reaches the account’s retention deadline, Twitch says the content no longer exists on its servers and Support cannot recover it.
That makes the safest routine simple: turn on storage before the stream, save the finished video as soon as practical, and verify that the resulting file or hosted copy can actually be opened. Do not treat the Twitch video page as your only archive.

How long Twitch keeps a past broadcast
Twitch’s On-Demand Content help guidance, accessed in 2026, lists these standard retention periods:

| Broadcaster account or status | Standard past-broadcast retention |
|---|---|
| Partners, Prime users and Twitch Turbo users | 60 days |
| Affiliates | 14 days |
| All other broadcasters | 7 days |
These are Twitch’s stated platform rules, not a guarantee that a video will remain available until the final minute. A stream can fail to save because storage was not enabled, the configuration was incompatible, or the connection was unstable. Start your archive process immediately after a stream rather than waiting for the deadline.
Shorter windows for vertical and 2K versions
Some broadcasts contain more than one encoded version. Twitch says the vertical version of a dual-format VOD is removed after 7 days, while the horizontal version remains for the rest of the ordinary account-based period. For a 2K stream, the 2K version expires after 7 days and the 1080p version remains for the rest of the applicable period.
For example, an Affiliate normally has 14 days for a past broadcast. Its vertical or 2K version may be available for only the first 7 days; the horizontal or 1080p version can remain until the Affiliate’s 14-day deadline. A Partner, Prime user or Turbo user still has a 60-day standard window, but the special vertical or 2K variant has the same 7-day limit.
Turn on Store Past Broadcasts before you stream
Twitch leaves this setting off by default. Enabling it after a stream cannot recreate a broadcast that was never stored, so confirm it before pressing the Go Live button.
- Sign in to Twitch and open your creator controls.
- Open Stream Settings.
- Find Store Past Broadcasts and switch it on.
- Save or apply the setting if Twitch presents a separate confirmation control.
- Check the setting again before your next broadcast, especially after changing streaming software, account type or channel configuration.
With storage enabled, Twitch can create a VOD after the broadcast ends. The setting is a prerequisite, not a promise that every stream will be recorded successfully. Incompatible configuration and network instability can still prevent a usable VOD, so keep a local recording option in your streaming setup if losing the session would be serious.

Download a VOD to your computer
Twitch’s native local-archive path saves one video at a time through Video Producer. This gives you a file that you can place on a computer, external drive or another storage system you manage.
- Open Creator Dashboard.
- Under Content, select Video Producer.
- Locate the past broadcast you want to preserve. Use the available filtering or sorting controls when the list is long.
- Open the three-dot menu beside that video.
- Choose Download.
- Wait for the download to begin, then let it finish before closing the browser or putting the computer to sleep.
- Open the resulting file and check that it plays from beginning to end before deleting or hiding the Twitch copy.
Twitch cautions that a long video may take time before the download starts. A delay at the beginning is therefore not proof that the request failed; allow additional time, then check the browser’s download area and the destination folder.

Muted audio remains muted in the download
If Twitch’s Audio Recognition system muted part of a VOD, downloading the video does not produce an unmuted version. The downloaded file reflects the available Twitch recording, including that mute. Preserve any original local recording from your streaming software separately if you need an audio track that Twitch did not retain.
Save the file somewhere you can retrieve
After the download completes, rename the file with useful information such as the stream date and title, then move it to a storage location you can access later. An external hard drive is an optional physical destination; Twitch does not specify a required drive type or model. If the video matters, keep an additional copy rather than relying on one device that could fail or be lost.
Export a VOD directly to YouTube
Exporting avoids the intermediate local-download step. Twitch sends the individual video to a connected YouTube account, where you can manage it as a hosted archive. This is a separate workflow from downloading and still requires you to verify that the upload completed and the video is accessible.

- Open Twitch’s Connections page.
- Connect the Twitch account to the intended YouTube account and complete any sign-in or authorization prompts.
- Open Creator Dashboard → Content → Video Producer.
- Find the VOD, open its three-dot menu and choose Export.
- Select the connected YouTube destination if Twitch asks you to choose one, then start the export.
- Check YouTube after processing to confirm that the complete video is present and that its visibility and title are what you expect.
Twitch notes that YouTube account verification is needed for uploads longer than YouTube’s 15-minute limit. The 15-minute figure is Twitch’s statement about YouTube’s requirement; complete the verification before exporting a longer VOD so the transfer is not blocked by an account restriction.

| Choice | What happens | Best fit | Important check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Download from Video Producer | One VOD is saved as a local file on your device. | You want direct control of the file, local editing, or storage on your own drives. | Confirm the file plays and that you have enough local storage for the complete video. |
| Export to YouTube | One VOD is sent to a connected YouTube account. | You prefer a hosted copy and want to avoid waiting for a local download first. | Connect the accounts, meet YouTube’s verification requirement for videos over 15 minutes, and verify the uploaded copy. |
Neither route is a substitute for checking the destination. A local file can be misplaced or damaged, and a hosted upload can fail or be unavailable if the destination account changes. The practical decision is whether you need a file you control immediately, a hosted copy, or both.
Use a post-stream preservation checklist
A repeatable checklist prevents the common mistake of remembering to save only the most important broadcasts.
- Confirm Store Past Broadcasts was enabled before the stream.
- Open Video Producer soon after the broadcast appears.
- Note whether the video has a vertical or 2K variant that will disappear after 7 days.
- Choose Download, Export, or both.
- Wait for the operation to finish; long videos may take time before a download starts.
- Play the saved copy and check its beginning, middle and end.
- Confirm that expected audio is present, remembering that Twitch Audio Recognition mutes remain in downloaded files.
- Store the local file in a named folder and, when the footage is valuable, duplicate it to another storage location.
- For an export, open the destination account and verify that the complete video processed successfully.
Use the shortest relevant deadline as your personal target. If you have a 2K or dual-format stream, preserve the special version within seven days even when the account’s ordinary VOD window is longer.
What happens to Clips and Highlights?
Clips from dual-format streams
Twitch’s dual-format guidance says clips created from dual-format streams are available in both vertical and horizontal formats and do not expire. That is specific guidance for dual-format clips. It should not be expanded into a promise that every clip, regardless of how it was created or how Twitch’s policies change, will always remain available.

If a clip is important, save a copy while you can view it. The dual-format statement describes Twitch availability; it does not remove the need to keep your own archive of footage you may need for editing, compliance or personal records.
Highlights depend on a saved VOD
Twitch says that when Store Past Broadcasts is off, you cannot create Highlights or Clips from those VODs. A Highlight is therefore not a recovery mechanism for an unsaved broadcast. Create any needed Highlight while the underlying VOD is still present, and preserve the source video separately if you need a durable copy.
If a VOD is missing, muted or already expired
The broadcast never appeared
First check whether Store Past Broadcasts was enabled before the stream and whether the broadcast finished processing in Video Producer. If storage was disabled, Twitch did not create a past broadcast for later download. Configuration incompatibility or network instability can also prevent a stream from saving successfully.
The retention period has passed
Twitch states that expired VOD content no longer exists on its servers and that Support cannot recover it. The same limit applies when a broadcast was never saved in the first place. There is no documented Twitch recovery step that can restore an expired or unsaved recording, so the useful action is prevention: save future broadcasts before their account or format deadline.
The file has missing audio
Check whether Twitch’s Audio Recognition system muted the affected portion. A download will not unmute it. Look for an original local recording made during the stream; if none exists, the Twitch copy cannot supply audio that Twitch removed.

The download seems stuck
Long videos can take time before the download begins. Keep the Video Producer page open, check the browser’s download status and confirm that the device has free storage. If the request never starts, retry while the VOD is still inside its retention window and use Export as an alternative path when a connected YouTube account is available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bulk downloads and third-party tools
Twitch does not provide a native bulk-download function in the documented workflow. Each video is downloaded or exported individually from Video Producer. Twitch’s help material mentions third-party tools for bulk downloading but does not endorse a particular tool. Treat any such utility as separate software: review its permissions and security implications yourself, and do not describe it as an official Twitch feature.
For a small archive, the one-at-a-time process is slower but has a clear verification point for every file. For a large back catalog, make a list ordered by the earliest expiration date and process the most time-sensitive videos first. This is especially important when vertical or 2K versions are present because their seven-day window is shorter than the ordinary account deadline.

Before going live
- Open Stream Settings and verify Store Past Broadcasts is on.
- Confirm that your streaming configuration is compatible with the channel.
- When the footage is important, enable a separate local recording in your streaming software so an independent copy exists if Twitch fails to save.
Immediately after the stream
- Wait for the VOD to appear in Video Producer.
- Identify whether the stream includes a vertical or 2K version.
- Start a download or export before handling lower-priority tasks.
Within seven days
- Preserve every vertical or 2K version you want to keep.
- Do not assume the longer account-based deadline applies to those variants.
Before the account deadline
- Finish saving the horizontal or 1080p version.
- Open each local file or hosted copy to confirm it is complete.
- Keep the verified archive in storage you can access independently of Twitch.
Key mistakes to avoid
- Turning storage on after the stream: this cannot recreate a VOD that Twitch never stored.
- Waiting for the final day: processing, download delays and upload verification can consume time.
- Confusing a retained horizontal copy with a retained vertical or 2K copy: the special versions expire after seven days.
- Assuming a muted download can be repaired by downloading again: Twitch’s Audio Recognition mute is part of the available recording.
- Expecting Support to restore an expired VOD: Twitch says expired and unsaved content is no longer on its servers.
- Calling a third-party bulk downloader an official Twitch feature: Twitch documents individual downloads and exports instead.
- Skipping verification: a transfer is not an archive until the file or hosted video opens and plays.
Bottom line for preserving Twitch content
Enable Store Past Broadcasts before every stream, then preserve each VOD from Video Producer while it is available. Use Download when you want a local file, Export when a connected YouTube archive suits you, and verify the result either way. Work to the seven-day limit for vertical and 2K variants, the 14-day limit for Affiliates, the seven-day limit for other broadcasters, or the 60-day limit for Partners, Prime users and Turbo users. Once Twitch’s retention period passes—or when a broadcast was never saved—Twitch says the recording cannot be recovered.
