To force an ARK server to save, open the administrator console and run admincheat saveworld (or saveworld). If your account is not already authorized, first run enablecheats <admin password>. ARK also saves automatically—community server guides commonly report a 15-minute default interval—but you should force a save before shutting down the server, changing major settings, or making a large build. An abrupt process or hosting-panel close can leave you at the last completed autosave.
The exact command behavior and configuration file differ between ARK: Survival Evolved (ASE) and ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA). The procedures below separate the two and identify where community reports conflict, so you can test the result on your own server instead of assuming a command succeeded.

A server save writes the current world state—structures, inventories, tames, player data and other world changes—to the server’s save files. An autosave runs in the background at a configured interval. A manual save requests an immediate write, which is useful when you are about to perform an operation that could interrupt the process.
Saving is not the same as creating a separate, permanent backup. Scheduled saves normally update the main world file. A forced save may also create a date-stamped restore file, according to a community report, but the timing and retention behavior are not documented consistently across server hosts. Treat those files as a possible recovery point, not as a guaranteed backup system.

There is no official Studio Wildcard confirmation in the available material for the command syntax, the 15-minute default, or the backup behavior. Commands and configuration names can change with game patches, server software and hosting panels. After issuing a command, verify that the server remains online and that a subsequent reconnect shows the latest change.
Force a save on ARK: Survival Evolved
Use the in-game PC console
- Join the server with an account that has administrator privileges.
- Press
Tabto open the console. - If the account is not already on the server’s allowed-cheaters list, enter
enablecheats <admin password>, replacing the placeholder with the password configured for that server. - Enter
admincheat saveworld. On servers where the prefix is not required,saveworldis the alternative form. - Wait briefly before disconnecting or stopping the server. Make a small, identifiable change first if you need to confirm that the save was effective, then reconnect and check that the change remains.
The password is the server’s administrator password, not your player password. Never publish it in chat, screenshots or support tickets. If the console reports an authentication error, re-enter enablecheats with the exact password and check that you joined the intended server.
Use a dedicated-server console
Hosting panels and command-line consoles expose the same world controls in different ways. Enter saveworld first; if the console requires administrator syntax, try admincheat saveworld. Do not close the panel immediately after sending the command. Confirm that the console accepts it and allow the server a moment to finish writing its files.

Test both command forms
ASA community reports are inconsistent. One dedicated-server administrator reported that admincheat saveworld did nothing in the dedicated console even though the same command worked from the in-game console. For that reason, test both saveworld and admincheat saveworld in the console you actually use.

- Open the in-game console or your host’s dedicated-server console.
- Authenticate with
enablecheats <admin password>when the server requires it. - Run
saveworldand observe the console output. - If there is no response or the world does not retain a test change, run
admincheat saveworld. - Reconnect and verify the result before relying on that form for production shutdowns.
A command that returns no visible message is not proof that it failed. The practical test is whether a known change survives a disconnect and restart. Keep a note of which form works in your particular ASA build and hosting environment.
Clean shutdown after saving
Community reports say that entering quit or exit in an ASA dedicated-server console both saves and shuts down cleanly. These reports are not verified by an official game reference, so test the command during a maintenance window. If your host provides a “stop” or “shutdown” button, issue the manual save first and wait for the server console to settle before using that button.
How autosave works and how to change its interval
Default interval
Community hosting documentation commonly cites an autosave interval of 15 minutes. That is a reported default, not a current, officially guaranteed value for every ASE or ASA patch. The interval can also be changed by a host, mod, configuration template or previous administrator.
The setting
The setting is named AutoSavePeriodMinutes. A community ASA configuration example shows a floating-point value such as AutoSavePeriodMinutes=5.0; retain the decimal point when editing a float. A value of 15.0 represents fifteen minutes in that format.

Reports disagree about which file contains the setting. Depending on the game and server setup, it may appear in GameUserSettings.ini or GameServerSettings.ini, commonly under a [ServerSettings] section. Your host’s configuration editor may expose the same key without showing the underlying file.
Change the interval safely
- Stop the server cleanly after issuing a manual save. Editing a live file can be overwritten by the running process.
- Make a copy of the relevant INI file so you can restore the previous value.
- Search both
GameUserSettings.iniandGameServerSettings.iniforAutoSavePeriodMinutes. If the key exists in both, use the file your host documents as authoritative and avoid creating conflicting duplicates. - Set the value with a decimal point, for example
AutoSavePeriodMinutes=5.0orAutoSavePeriodMinutes=15.0. - Save the file, start the server using your normal host procedure, and inspect the loaded configuration or console output if available.
- Test by making a harmless change and checking that it remains after an autosave interval and reconnect.
A shorter interval reduces the amount of progress that can be lost, but it causes more frequent disk writes. A longer interval reduces write frequency while increasing the possible rollback window. Choose a value that fits the server’s player count, storage performance and tolerance for lost activity rather than copying a number blindly.

When to force a save
- Before planned shutdown: Run the command, wait for it to complete, then use the host’s clean stop procedure.
- Before changing server settings: Save first so a failed edit or restart does not discard recent progress.
- After a major build or tame: A manual save creates a clear recovery point before you continue.
- Before installing, removing or updating mods: Save the world and preserve a separate copy of the server files if your host allows it.
- Before maintenance or file transfers: Do not copy a live world while it is actively writing; save and stop it first.
Do not spam the command repeatedly. One deliberate save followed by a short wait is easier to verify and places less unnecessary load on storage.
Preventing rollbacks during shutdown
The most common avoidable rollback is stopping the hosting client, terminal or server process abruptly. If the latest manual save has not finished, the server may restart from the previous autosave. A clean sequence is:

- Warn connected players and stop new building or transfers.
- Run
saveworldoradmincheat saveworld, using the form verified for your game and console. - Wait for the console response or for a short interval with no active save error.
- Use the dedicated console’s tested shutdown command, such as
quitorexiton ASA, or the host’s documented graceful-stop control. - Start the server again and have an administrator verify a recent change before inviting players back.
If the process has frozen and a forced termination is the only option, record the time and warn players that changes since the last confirmed save may be lost. Do not promise that a manual command can recover data that was never written.
Backups and restore points
Scheduled saves normally overwrite the main world file. One community report says a forced save writes that main file and also creates a date-stamped file that can serve as a restore point; the same report describes roughly two-hour backup spacing. That behavior is low-confidence and may be specific to one server setup.

- Check your host’s file manager or backup documentation for the exact save directory and retention policy.
- Confirm that date-stamped files are actually present after a manual save.
- Copy a restore file to separate storage before experimenting with a rollback.
- Record which world, map and timestamp each copy belongs to; similarly named files from different maps are easy to confuse.
- Restore only while the server is stopped, then start it and verify player, tribe and structure data.
A dated save file is not a substitute for independent backups. If your host offers scheduled archive backups, configure them separately and test a restoration before you need one.

The console says the command is unknown
Check that you are in the ARK console rather than the operating system shell or a host chat box. On PC ASE, open the in-game console with Tab. On a dedicated console, try the other command form: saveworld and admincheat saveworld are both reported in community documentation.

The command works in-game but not in the dedicated console
This is specifically reported for ASA. Run the command from the in-game administrator console, or test the bare form in the dedicated console. Document the working method for your server and repeat the verification after a game or server update.
Recent changes disappeared after a restart
Compare the time of the lost change with the last confirmed save. An abrupt stop, a command sent to the wrong server, an authentication failure or an INI edit that was overwritten can all leave the world at an older autosave. Reconnect, make a small test change, force a save, and verify it after a clean restart before allowing players to resume.

Search both possible INI files, check for duplicate keys, and confirm the value uses a decimal point when your configuration expects a float. A host panel may regenerate files from a template; if so, make the change in that panel or its documented configuration source. Verify the loaded value after startup rather than trusting the text file alone.
You cannot authenticate
Use the exact administrator password configured for that server with enablecheats <admin password>. If the account is already authorized through the server’s allowed-cheaters file, the command may not be necessary. If authentication still fails, ask the server owner to confirm your account and password instead of repeatedly guessing.

What about single-player?
The available material does not establish a verified single-player save procedure for ASE. A forum thread about saving in single-player exists, but its contents were not available for confirmation. Do not assume that a dedicated-server command, hosting-panel backup or server INI path applies to a local single-player session. This guide therefore limits its guaranteed procedure to administered servers; use the current in-game menus and controls for your single-player version and confirm the result before relying on it.
Administrator pre-shutdown checklist
- Notify players that the server is going offline.
- Finish trades, transfers and other actions that must not be interrupted.
- Authenticate with
enablecheatsif necessary. - Run the command form you tested for your game and console.
- Wait for the save to complete.
- Copy or verify a dated restore file if your host creates one.
- Use a graceful shutdown, never an abrupt process kill unless there is no alternative.
- After restart, verify a recent test change and check the server is loading the intended map and world.
The Bottom Line
For a dependable ARK server save, authenticate as an administrator, run the tested saveworld command, and shut the server down gracefully. Leave autosave enabled, treat the reported 15-minute interval as a setting to verify rather than a guarantee, and test ASA commands and configuration paths on your own installation.
