Save the confirmation screen immediately after submitting your Diversity Visa (DV) entry: open your browser’s Print command, choose Save to PDF (or Microsoft Print to PDF on Windows), select a fitting scale, and verify the saved file. The PDF should show the entrant name, confirmation number, year of birth and digital signature without clipped fields.
Why the confirmation PDF matters
After a complete online DV entry, the U.S. Department of State displays a confirmation screen with your name and a unique confirmation number. That number is required later, together with the primary entrant’s family name and year of birth, to use Entrant Status Check. The Department says Entrant Status Check is the source for selection results and subsequent instructions.
The confirmation screen also identifies the entrant name, confirmation number, year of birth and digital signature. A browser PDF preserves the whole screen in one file, which is easier to store and back up than a loose paper printout.

Save the page immediately after submission
- Do not close or refresh the confirmation screen. Stay on the page shown after the entry is accepted. If the page is still open, saving it now is the most reliable option.
- Open Print. Use your browser menu and choose Print, or use the keyboard shortcut displayed by your browser. Common desktop shortcuts are Ctrl+P on Windows and Linux and Command+P on macOS.
- Choose a PDF destination. In the printer or destination list, select Save to PDF. On Windows, Microsoft Print to PDF provides the same built-in approach.
- Set the page orientation. Start with the orientation that matches the preview. If the confirmation is wider than it is tall, landscape may be clearer; otherwise use portrait.
- Fit the entire page. Select Fit to page, Fit to printable area or the equivalent scaling option. If the preview breaks the confirmation across pages or cuts off a field, lower the scale slightly and preview again.
- Remove browser extras. Turn off Headers and footers when that option is available. This prevents the browser from adding the page URL, date and title to the document.
- Save to a private location. Use a descriptive filename such as
DV-confirmation-2026.pdf. Save it somewhere you can find again, but do not place it in a publicly shared folder. - Open and inspect the file. Confirm that the entrant name, confirmation number, year of birth and digital signature are all visible and legible. Do not assume a successful save means the entire page was captured.
- Create a second secure copy. Keep the original and a backup in separate locations, such as an encrypted computer folder and a trusted external drive or private cloud account.
Print-dialog settings that prevent clipping

Browser wording differs slightly by version. The preview is the authority: if it shows missing edges, tiny text or an unexpected blank page, correct the settings before clicking Save.
Browser-specific paths
Google Chrome or Chromium-based browsers
Open the three-dot menu, choose Print, and set Destination to Save to PDF. Expand More settings to find paper size, orientation, scale and the headers-and-footers control. Review the preview, then click Save.
Microsoft Edge
Open the three-dot menu and select Print. Choose Save to PDF or Microsoft Print to PDF, open additional settings if needed, turn off headers and footers, and save after checking the preview.
Mozilla Firefox
Open the application menu and choose Print. Select the system PDF printer or a PDF output offered by the operating system. Set orientation and scaling in the print dialog, disable headers and footers if the dialog exposes those fields, and inspect the preview before confirming.
Safari on macOS
Choose File > Print. In the macOS print sheet, open the PDF menu at the bottom and select Save as PDF. Name the file, choose a private folder and save it. If Safari’s preview clips the page, cancel, adjust the print settings and try again.
Phones and tablets
Mobile print menus vary by operating-system release and installed apps. If the confirmation is open on a phone, use the system share or print action and look specifically for a PDF save option. A desktop browser is preferable when available because it exposes scale, orientation and header controls more consistently. Whatever device you use, open the resulting PDF and verify every required field.

How to verify a complete PDF
Use this checklist before leaving the confirmation page or filing the document:
- The entrant name matches the person who submitted the entry.
- The entire confirmation number is visible, with no characters hidden at an edge or split between pages.
- The year of birth is present and readable.
- The digital signature or signature area is visible.
- The PDF opens normally in a second viewer or browser tab.
- The filename identifies the DV year without exposing the confirmation number in a shared or public filename.
- A backup copy exists in a different secure location.
Zoom in on the confirmation number. A page that looks complete at a glance can still have text rendered too small to read or a final line cut off by the printer margins.
Privacy and safe storage
Your confirmation number is sensitive because it is part of the information used to access your Entrant Status Check result. Keep the PDF private, avoid posting screenshots, and do not send the number to an untrusted visa intermediary. If you must share the file with a legitimate adviser, use a private transfer and remove access afterward.
Store at least two copies, but do not make both copies dependent on one device. A local encrypted folder plus a private backup is more resilient than leaving the only copy in a downloads folder that may be cleaned automatically.
If you already closed the confirmation page
Go directly to dvprogram.state.gov and open Entrant Status Check. On the official help page, choose Forgot Confirmation Number and provide the requested primary-entrant information. Recovery is not guaranteed when the required information cannot be verified, so the PDF should be saved at submission time whenever possible.
Do not follow recovery links from unsolicited email, text messages or social-media posts. Type the official domain yourself or use a bookmark you created from the government site.

Common problems and fixes
The preview cuts off the right or bottom edge
Change scale to Fit to page or reduce the custom scale slightly. If the page is unusually wide, switch orientation. Reopen the preview after each change; do not rely on the saved file to correct clipping.
The confirmation is split across several pages
A long page can legitimately flow to more than one PDF page, but every page must be present. Select all pages, keep the scale large enough for readable text, and check that the continuation contains no missing fields. If the split is caused by an oversized margin, use the printer dialog’s fit option rather than deleting pages.
The PDF includes a URL, date or browser title
Return to the print settings and turn off Headers and footers. Those lines are browser metadata and are not part of the confirmation content.

The text is tiny or blurred
Choose a larger paper size if available, use the page’s natural orientation and avoid excessive shrinking. You can save a second copy at a different scale, but keep the version in which the confirmation number is easiest to read.
The print command is missing or the page renders incorrectly
Update the browser and try again. The DV instructions warn that older browsers may encounter problems with the online system. If the confirmation is still open, avoid repeatedly refreshing it; first preserve the page with the browser’s own print function.
The browser or computer crashes before saving
Reopen the official status-check site and try the Forgot Confirmation Number process. Have the primary entrant’s details ready. The official recovery route may not work if the submitted information cannot be matched.

A website asks for money to recover the number
Close it. Use only the official government domain and its Entrant Status Check help tools. A paid intermediary is not required to save a PDF or use the official recovery form.

A paper copy can supplement the PDF, but it does not remove the need to check the confirmation number and store a backup.

Should I include the confirmation number in the filename?
No. Use a descriptive filename such as DV-confirmation-2026.pdf and keep the number inside the protected document. A filename containing the number can expose it in shared folders, backups or email subject lines.
Can I delete the PDF after printing a paper copy?
Keep the digital file. Paper can be damaged or misplaced, while a protected PDF can be backed up and used to confirm that every character is legible.
Does a PDF prove that I was selected?
No. It proves that you saved the entry confirmation. Selection results and further instructions are provided through Entrant Status Check on the official government site.
