On a Samsung Galaxy, “download messages” can mean sharing a few messages, backing them up for later restoration, or moving them to another phone. Samsung documents all three routes, but the cited instructions do not establish a built-in way to export an entire conversation as a readable PDF, CSV, or text file. Choose the method that matches what you need to do with the messages.
Choose the right way to save your messages

Share selected messages with Quick Share
Use this route when you want to send particular messages rather than preserve a full conversation archive. Samsung’s documented flow is to open the conversation, select one or more messages, tap Share, choose Quick Share, and select a destination. Back up messages to Samsung Cloud
Samsung’s US support instructions give this path for a Galaxy phone: Settings → Accounts and backup → Back up data under Samsung Cloud. Select Messages and tap Back up now. To restore, open the same backup area, choose Restore data, select the source device and Messages, then start the restore. To restore onto another phone, sign in there with the Samsung account associated with the backup. Menu names and availability can vary by region, model, and software. Samsung describes enabling Backup by Google One under Settings → Accounts and backup → Back up data under Google Drive, then tapping Back up now. Samsung says backed-up texts can be restored when setting up a new phone or after resetting one by using the same Google account. Transfer messages to another phone with Smart Switch
For Samsung’s US wireless procedure, use Smart Switch on both phones: set the old phone to send data and the new phone to receive it, select Messages on the sending phone, and tap Transfer. The support page’s described wireless procedure says to place the phones within 4 inches; treat that as guidance for that procedure, not a universal distance guarantee. Samsung warns that the available content can depend on the connected device, so check the choices shown on your phones. Back up messages to a Windows PC or Mac
Smart Switch for computer can make a restorable backup, but it is not a way to browse or read message conversations on the computer. Samsung states: “Messages cannot be viewed on your computer from the back up files, but they can be read once they are transferred to the new phone.” Samsung’s Messages instructions

- Connect the Galaxy phone to the computer by USB and allow the phone’s connection prompt.
- Open Smart Switch on the computer and choose Backup. Select message data if prompted and start the backup.
- To restore, connect the phone, choose Restore, select the backup data if needed, and run the restore.
Samsung’s US computer guide lists Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.9 or later for the Smart Switch computer app and says Chromebooks are not compatible. The same page lists Android 4.3 or later for general transfers and Android 7.0 or later for encrypted data transfers; these are the requirements published in that guide, so check current compatibility for your specific devices. It also lists iOS 5 or later for cable transfers from iPhone and iOS 12 or later for Wi-Fi transfers. Samsung’s Windows and Mac guide

Samsung documents Smart Switch backups to external storage, including an SD card or USB storage, with restoration through Smart Switch. The cited instructions from Samsung Australia apply to Australian Galaxy variants; check your local Samsung support page and the compatibility of your model and storage connection. A USB-C OTG adapter may be needed depending on the phone and storage device. It is only relevant to this external-storage route, not Quick Share, cloud backup, or ordinary phone-to-phone transfer. A compatible SD card is an option only for models with an SD slot. Samsung Australia’s guide

Samsung Messages: check Trash
Open Samsung Messages, tap More options, choose Trash, select the messages, and tap Restore. This works only for messages still available in Trash. Samsung’s recovery instructions

Google Messages: distinguish archived from deleted
Samsung says deleted texts in Google Messages are permanently deleted, while archived messages can be recovered from the app’s Archived section by unarchiving them. If deleted messages were included in an existing cloud or Smart Switch backup, you may be able to restore that backup using its supported process; an unbacked-up deletion is not guaranteed to be recoverable. Check compatibility before relying on a backup
- Confirm the messaging app, phone model, Android version, and region; Samsung’s menus and supported content differ across devices and software.
- For a new-phone transfer, check which data Smart Switch offers on both the sending and receiving phones before starting.
- For cloud restore, use the same Samsung or Google account associated with the backup; Google restore also has the Android-version condition described above.
- For PC or external-storage backups, remember that the backup is for restoration to a phone, not a readable transcript on a computer.
- Samsung’s regional support pages may set different compatibility conditions. Review current instructions for the specific devices you are using.
