Save important visual voicemails while your current phone, app, SIM and mailbox still work. A new carrier may not import the old mailbox, and the current carrier may erase messages after a stated deadline.
Export each message to a location outside voicemail, open the saved audio to verify it works, and only then port your number or cancel service. The exact menus and retention rules depend on your phone, operating system, carrier and region.
Why you should export voicemail before changing service
Visual voicemail is an interface to a carrier mailbox, not automatically a permanent archive. The list you see in the Phone app or a carrier app can depend on your active SIM, account provisioning, app settings and the carrier’s retention policy. When service changes, one or more of those dependencies can disappear.

Apple gives a similar warning in its iPhone guide: “Messages are saved until you delete them (or until your carrier erases them, if they’re not stored in iCloud).” Apple also notes that deletion after a SIM change can vary by country or region. Treat the voicemail inbox as temporary until you have an independently playable copy: Apple Support.
Save-before-you-switch checklist
- Identify what matters. Mark messages containing medical, legal, financial, work or family information, instructions, dates, addresses or irreplaceable personal recordings.
- Check the current mailbox. Confirm that messages play in the existing visual-voicemail interface. If the app is already failing, use the dial-in method described below before the service ends.
- Export every needed message. Use Share, Send to, Save, Download or an equivalent command in the current iPhone or Android app.
- Choose storage outside voicemail. Files, Voice Memos, Notes, email, Messages or a cloud-storage folder can work if the resulting audio attachment remains accessible without the old carrier account.
- Verify the copy. Open the exported file from its destination, play it from beginning to end and check that the filename or note identifies the caller and date.
- Make a second copy for important recordings. Keep one copy on the phone or computer and another in a separate cloud or local location. This protects against a single device failure.
- Check for a deletion date. Some carriers send a text warning with the date on which current messages will be erased. Export before that date, not on the day of the port.
- Switch service only after verification. Keep the old phone, SIM and account working until all required recordings open and play independently.
How to export visual voicemail on an iPhone
Menu names vary with iOS layout, carrier settings and region. On current iPhones, Voicemail may appear directly in the Phone app or under Calls with a Voicemails filter.
Export from the Phone app
- Open Phone.
- Open Voicemail. If your layout shows categories, open Calls, then choose the Voicemails filter.
- Tap the voicemail you need and play it once to confirm it is the correct recording.
- Tap Share. The available destinations depend on your iPhone, installed apps and carrier configuration.
- Choose a destination such as Save to Files, Voice Memos, Notes, email, Messages or AirDrop. Save into a clearly named folder, or add identifying text to the note or message.
- Open the destination immediately. In Files, browse to the folder and tap the audio attachment; in Voice Memos or Notes, open the new item and play it.
- Repeat for each message that must survive the service change.
Sharing creates a separate attachment or recording; leaving a message visible in the Phone app does not perform that export. Apple documents the Share workflow and the possibility of carrier erasure at Apple Support. A carrier’s supported destinations can differ, so use whichever option your phone actually presents.

If the iPhone cannot show visual voicemail
Tap Voicemail and follow the spoken instructions if the Phone app offers them. You can also call your own number from another phone, wait for your greeting, press the carrier-specified * or # key to bypass it, and enter the voicemail password. The key, prompts and available save commands are carrier-dependent; Apple’s instructions are at Apple Support.
Google Fi’s iPhone-specific limit
Google Fi’s iPhone guidance says a phone can have 45 voicemails saved at one time and instructs users to download a voicemail from visual voicemail before deleting it. That is a Google Fi service-specific figure, not a general iPhone capacity or a rule for every carrier: Google Fi Help.
How to export visual voicemail on Android
Android phones may use the carrier’s Visual Voicemail app, the Google Phone app or another manufacturer interface. Google says visual-voicemail support varies by operator and country or region, so a missing tab can be a service limitation rather than a fault in the handset.

Export from the carrier app or Google Phone
- Open the carrier’s Visual Voicemail app, or open the Phone app and select its Voicemail tab.
- Tap the message, or expand it so the playback and action controls appear.
- Choose Share, Send to, Save or a three-dot menu containing one of those actions.
- Select a destination such as email, text, Files or cloud storage. Some carrier instructions specifically show sending an Android message as an attachment to Google Drive; the destination list on your device may differ.
- Open the resulting attachment outside the voicemail app and play it completely.
- Rename or annotate the file if needed, then repeat for the other messages.
Google’s documented instruction is: “To share the voicemail audio recording, expand the voicemail. Then tap Send to and tap the app that you want to use.” The wording and menu location can change with the Phone app version: Google Phone app Help.

What happens if Android visual voicemail is turned off
Google warns that turning visual voicemail off deletes recordings from the Phone app, even though the operator might retain its own copy. Export before disabling the feature, replacing the SIM or changing service; do not rely on a possible carrier-side copy that you cannot access later. The operator and region requirements are described in Google Phone app Help.
Pick a destination that will outlive the mailbox
The destination matters as much as the Share action. A copy is useful only if you can open it without the old voicemail account.

- Files or local storage: Good for an immediate offline copy. Connect the phone to a computer or back up the folder separately if the recording is important.
- Email: Convenient for a small number of messages. Send to an account you will keep after the carrier change, then confirm the attachment can be downloaded and played from the received message.
- Voice Memos or Notes: Useful on iPhone when the Share sheet offers those apps. Verify that the item contains playable audio rather than only a link back to voicemail.
- Cloud storage: Useful for a second copy and access from another device. Create a folder with descriptive filenames, and check that the service has uploaded the actual audio file.
- Messages or AirDrop: Practical for moving a recording to another Apple device or trusted recipient. Confirm the recipient device can open the attachment before deleting the original.
Do not confuse a bookmark, transcript, screenshot or voicemail list entry with an exported recording. A durable copy should appear as an audio attachment or a playable file that remains available when the old SIM and carrier app are no longer active.
Carrier rules that can affect retention
Carrier examples show why exporting is safer than assuming migration. They describe different products and cannot be generalized to every provider.

These policies also illustrate why a deletion date, mailbox type or feature change can matter even when your phone number stays the same. Check the current instructions for your exact plan and country before making the change.

If you cannot export from the visual-voicemail app
Use the traditional mailbox before porting the number or cancelling the line. You may still be able to listen to messages through the carrier’s telephone system even when the visual interface is unavailable.
- From the old phone, tap Voicemail and follow the spoken instructions if the button connects to the mailbox.
- If that fails, call your own number from another phone.
- When your greeting starts, press the key your carrier specifies—often
*or#—to bypass the greeting. - Enter the voicemail password or PIN when prompted.
- Use the mailbox’s playback and save, forward or recording options if offered. Carrier menus differ, and some systems provide no direct audio-download command.
- If the mailbox will not export, play the message through the authorized call and make a permitted recording using a separate device only where local law and the message’s privacy requirements allow it. Keep the original mailbox active until you have confirmed a lawful, usable copy.
Apple documents calling your own number and using the carrier-dependent bypass key at Apple Support. Google Fi also documents calling your own number and entering the PIN at Google Fi Help. Neither page establishes one universal key or menu for all carriers.
Troubleshooting export failures
The Share or Send button is missing
- Expand or open the message first; some interfaces hide actions in a three-dot menu.
- Check whether you are using a carrier app rather than the Google Phone app, or vice versa.
- Update the app only while the old service is still active, then reopen the message.
- Use mailbox dial-in as a fallback before changing the SIM or account.
The exported file will not play
- Download the attachment completely instead of opening a preview or web link.
- Try the phone’s built-in audio player and a second trusted device.
- Send the file to yourself by email or copy it to Files, then open that independent copy.
- If it still fails, re-export while the original voicemail remains available; do not delete the source message after an unverified export.
The app shows an empty mailbox after a SIM or service change
Contact the old carrier immediately, but do not assume recovery is possible. Apple and Google both document conditions under which recordings can disappear from the visual interface, and carrier retention periods are service-specific. If you exported and verified copies beforehand, use those instead of waiting for a mailbox restoration.
You have more messages than the app will display or save
Prioritize irreplaceable messages and export in batches. Google Fi’s 45-message figure applies only to that service’s iPhone guidance; it is not evidence of a universal limit. A carrier may also impose a separate mailbox quota or deletion schedule, so ask support for the exact limit for your account.
What to confirm with the old carrier before the switch
- Whether the mailbox is Visual, Basic or Enhanced voicemail.
- Whether messages will be erased on a stated date, after a SIM change or when the line is cancelled.
- Whether a port-out preserves the old mailbox temporarily, and for how long.
- Whether the Share, Send or Download action is supported on your specific handset and operating-system version.
- Whether the carrier can provide dial-in access and what password, PIN and greeting-bypass key it requires.
Ask for these details while the account is active. A receiving carrier’s ability to provision visual voicemail does not establish that it can retrieve recordings stored by the previous provider.

- Open every saved file from its independent destination.
- Play each recording from start to finish and check that the audio is intelligible.
- Confirm that filenames, notes or email subjects identify the message well enough to find later.
- Confirm a second copy exists for messages you cannot replace.

- Only then authorize the number port, replace the SIM or cancel the old service.
