Save everything while you are still connected, then prove that each item opens without a network. Download an offline map covering the entire route, add eligible tickets to your phone’s wallet, and store essential documents in a genuinely local location. Finally, open the map, each pass and each document in offline mode; a cloud listing or preview alone is not proof that the file is on your device.
The exact features depend on your phone, region, map app and ticket issuer. Apple Maps and Google Maps do not offer identical offline navigation, and a wallet cannot store a pass that the airline or event provider does not support.
What to prepare before you disconnect
Think of offline preparation as three separate jobs:
- Navigation: save a map area large enough to contain the whole journey, not just the starting address.
- Entry and travel passes: add supported boarding passes, rail tickets or event tickets to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet while internet access is available.
- Evidence and instructions: keep passports scans, reservations, insurance details, prescriptions, emergency contacts and other vital files in a location the device can open without contacting a cloud service.
Do the setup on the device you will actually carry. Apple says offline maps do not sync between devices, so downloading on an iPad does not make the map available on your iPhone. Offline files also consume local storage; check capacity before starting large downloads.

Check storage, battery and app readiness
Delete unneeded videos or downloads before saving a large map or document set. Both Apple Maps and Google Maps show an estimated download size before you confirm an area. Choose a smaller area only when it still covers every road, station and detour you may need.
Update the map, wallet and document apps while connected, and sign in to the accounts that own the tickets or files. If the phone will be your only reference for a long outage, carry a charged phone and consider an optional portable phone power bank. A power bank is a convenience, not a substitute for checking that your content is actually stored.
Download an offline map on iPhone
Apple’s current iPhone guide supports offline maps on compatible software, with availability varying by country or region. Apple’s support instructions published December 29, 2025 describe the following path.
- Open Maps while connected.
- Tap your profile picture or initials.
- Choose Offline Maps.
- Tap Add Offline Map.
- Search for the destination, or choose your current location.
- Adjust the highlighted area so it includes the complete route and any likely alternate destination.
- Tap Download.
You can also press and hold a location on the map to place a pin, open the location card and choose the option to download an area around it. The app displays the anticipated file size before downloading. A compact region uses less storage, but trimming the rectangle too aggressively can leave part of a route unavailable.
What Apple Maps can do offline
Apple says a downloaded area can provide place details and turn-by-turn driving, walking, cycling and transit directions when disconnected, subject to feature availability in the region. That does not mean every city supports every travel mode. Test the specific destination and mode you need before leaving.
Apple settings that can change your saved maps
Review the settings on the Offline Maps screen rather than assuming a download remains forever:

- Automatic Updates: Apple’s support page reviewed for this guide shows this enabled by default. It lets an available connection refresh map data.
- Optimize Storage: this can remove offline maps that the system considers unused. If a map is critical for an upcoming trip, check that it is still listed and consider disabling optimization until you return.
- Device location: maps are stored per device and are not synchronized to another Apple device.
Offline maps are not offered in every country or region. If Offline Maps is missing or the app will not select your destination, check Apple’s current regional availability information while you still have service and make another navigation plan.
Download an offline map with Google Maps on Android
Google Maps saves a rectangular area. The area must contain the entire route you intend to drive; downloading only the city where you start is not enough if the route leaves that rectangle.
- Open Google Maps while connected.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Tap Offline maps.
- Select Select your own map.
- Move and resize the rectangle until it covers the full route, destination and any essential junctions.
- Tap Download.
Another route is to search for a city or destination, open its place panel and use the download option shown there. Google displays an estimated file size before the download begins. Afterward, return to Profile picture > Offline maps and confirm the area appears in the list.
Google’s offline navigation limits
Google’s Android help says offline driving directions do not include live traffic information or alternate routes. Offline walking, bicycling and transit directions are unavailable in the documented workflow. You can still use the downloaded road map for orientation, but do not expect congestion warnings, a newly calculated detour or a transit departure update.
Because the route must fit completely inside the saved area, include the road from your departure point to the final address. If you may cross a border, pass through an airport district or take a long motorway, download adjoining areas rather than relying on a narrow city selection.
Expiration and updates
Google says offline maps can expire. Its current help page states that, when expiration is within 15 days and the device is connected to Wi-Fi, the app attempts an automatic update. Check the expiration or update status in the Offline maps list before departure and manually update the map if necessary. A 2023 Google product post described automatic updates as occurring about once every two weeks when enabled, but the current help page is the better reference for the expiration behavior; do not treat a fixed two-week interval as a guarantee.

Apple Maps and Google Maps: which offline behavior fits?

Choose the app that supports the travel mode and region you need, then verify the actual saved area. A feature listed for one platform is not evidence that the same feature works on the other.
Save flight, rail and event tickets to a wallet
Add a pass while you are connected and while the provider still recognizes your booking. Airlines, rail operators and event companies decide whether a pass is eligible; neither wallet accepts every PDF, barcode or ticket format.
Apple Wallet
- Open the airline, rail or event provider’s app, email or website while online.
- Choose the provider’s Add to Apple Wallet control when it is offered.
- Follow the on-screen confirmation and authenticate if requested.
- Open Apple Wallet immediately and select the pass.
Apple describes presenting eligible boarding passes and tickets from an iPhone or Apple Watch. Check the passenger name, date, flight or event, seat and barcode before closing the provider app. If there is no Apple Wallet button, save the provider’s permitted offline alternative instead; do not assume a screenshot will be accepted at the gate.

- Open the participating airline or event provider’s app, email or website while connected.
- Choose Add to Google Wallet when the provider offers it.
- Complete the setup and then open Google Wallet to verify the pass.
Google Wallet supports participating providers only. Google’s help says adding a boarding pass from a screenshot requires the Wallet app and an active internet connection during setup. That requirement applies when creating the pass from the screenshot; complete it before service disappears. A pass that is visible in a booking website but has not been added to Wallet may still depend on a network.
Verify tickets for the real trip
- Open each pass in its wallet, not merely in an email or browser tab.
- Confirm the expected passenger, date, route or event and barcode.
- Turn on the phone’s lock-screen or wallet shortcut only if you understand how you will retrieve it offline.
- If the provider issued a changing barcode or requires identity verification, read its instructions before relying on wallet access alone.
Carry the provider’s stated backup, such as an identification document or booking reference, when its rules require one. Wallet storage does not override venue or airline acceptance policies.
Make important documents genuinely local
A cloud icon, a recent preview and a file name in a synced folder do not prove that the full document is available without internet. Open the file from its offline location while connected, then test again with connectivity disabled.

Google Drive on a computer: mirrored files
Google Drive for desktop can mirror files and folders to the computer. Mirrored content is stored locally and remains accessible offline even if the Drive app is not running. Mirroring uses disk space for the selected content.

Google Drive on a computer: streamed files
With streaming, files normally remain in the cloud. Select the specific file or folder and mark it Available offline. Google says streamed files marked offline are accessible only while the Drive app is running, and they still consume local disk space. If Drive is closed, a streamed offline file may not open even though it was previously marked available offline.

The exact controls on a phone or in another document service can differ. The Drive desktop instructions do not establish a universal offline procedure for every mobile app or cloud provider. For high-value documents, keep a separate device-local copy in a format your phone or computer can open without a cloud login, and test that copy.
Documents worth saving
- Passport, identity card and visa information, subject to local privacy and border rules.
- Flight, rail, hotel and car-rental confirmations.
- Travel insurance policy details and emergency assistance numbers.
- Prescriptions, medical letters and allergy information.
- Addresses, booking references and instructions for reaching accommodation.
- Copies of permits, work documents or forms needed for the specific trip.
Use a clear folder structure and descriptive file names. Keep sensitive files protected with the device’s passcode or an encrypted local storage feature. Do not leave confidential scans in an unprotected shared folder.

- Switch on Airplane Mode, or otherwise disable Wi-Fi and mobile data. Leave Bluetooth changes alone unless your test requires them.
- Open Apple Maps or Google Maps and locate the saved area. Plan a representative route that stays within the downloaded boundary.
- Open every ticket in the intended wallet app. Check the passenger or attendee details and barcode.
- Open each essential document from the local folder or offline control, not from a recent-items list that may fetch it again.
- Close and reopen the document app. For streamed Google Drive files, keep Drive running because Google documents that requirement.
- Restore connectivity and check map age, expiration, available storage and any failed downloads.
Do not rely on a single spot check. A map can open while a route extends beyond its saved rectangle; a document can show a cached first page while later pages remain online-only.

Common failures and fixes
The route crosses outside the downloaded map
Resize the Apple Maps area or Google Maps rectangle to include the entire journey, then download the larger region. If storage is tight, remove unrelated offline areas rather than trimming the route at a critical junction.
The map is present but navigation behaves differently
Expect reduced functionality offline. Google’s documented mode is driving without traffic or alternate routes, and it excludes offline walking, bicycling and transit directions. Apple’s supported modes depend on regional availability. Save a static address, station name or written turn sequence as a backup for any leg the app cannot calculate.
A map expired before departure
Connect to Wi-Fi, open the offline-map list and update it. Google’s current help says its automatic attempt occurs when expiration is within 15 days and Wi-Fi is available; do not wait for that process if the trip is imminent.

A ticket is visible online but absent from Wallet
Return to the provider’s app or confirmation while connected and use its wallet button. If the provider does not participate, follow its accepted download or print instructions. For a screenshot-based Google Wallet boarding pass, complete setup while the Wallet app has internet access.
A document opens only with a connection
In Google Drive for desktop, determine whether the item is mirrored or streamed. Mark a streamed file Available offline, leave Drive running for the offline period, or create a separate local copy in a readable format. Then repeat the Airplane Mode test.
There is not enough storage
Check the size estimate before each map download, remove unused offline maps and clear expendable media. Keep the documents you need most rather than saving an entire cloud library. Recheck free space after downloads complete.
Final departure checklist
- Map download is complete and covers the full route, destination and likely interchange points.
- Map age, expiration and update status have been checked.
- Offline-map storage settings will not remove the required area before travel.
- Each ticket appears in the intended wallet with the correct passenger, date and event details.
- Every essential document opens with Wi-Fi and mobile data disabled.
- Google Drive files are identified as mirrored or marked Available offline; streamed files will have Drive running.
- The phone has sufficient free storage and a practical charging plan.
- Addresses, booking references and emergency numbers are available in a local, readable form.
Offline preparation is successful only when the complete route, valid passes and readable documents survive the same disconnected test you may face during the outage.
