To save new Galaxy camera photos to an SD card, open the Camera app’s settings and choose SD card as the storage location. To move photos already on the phone, use Gallery or My Files. First check that your exact Galaxy model and regional variant support removable SD storage; not every Samsung phone does.

Check that your Galaxy supports an SD card

SD-card support depends on the specific Galaxy model, so check your phone’s specifications or model-specific Samsung support page before buying a card. Samsung’s regional compatibility information is not a universal list: Samsung Japan, for example, names selected models in its local guidance, but that should not be treated as a current worldwide list. Samsung Canada’s file-management guidance and Samsung US’s instructions for moving files also direct users to account for model support.

Once you have confirmed compatibility, insert a card that works with your device. If the phone offers to change the camera’s save destination, choose Change to use the card; choosing Cancel leaves the existing destination in place, according to Samsung Japan’s instructions.

Set the camera to save new photos to the SD card

  1. Open Camera. Tap the settings gear. Depending on the app version, you may need to open the camera options first and then tap Settings.
  2. Open the storage setting. Tap Storage location or Save location; the label and its position can vary by handset, Android version, and Camera app version.
  3. Select the card. Choose SD card or External SD card.
  4. Confirm with a test photo. Take a regular photo, then check My Files at SD card > DCIM > Camera.

These menu variations and the test location are described in Samsung’s UK SD-card guide and Japan camera-storage instructions, last updated 2026-02-04.

Move selected images with Gallery

  1. In Gallery, create a new album and select the SD card as its storage location.
  2. Return to your photos and select the image or images to move.
  3. Tap More options > Move to album, then choose the album stored on the SD card.

Samsung notes that an album stored on the card displays a small SD-card symbol. See the Samsung UK SD-card guide.

Know which camera captures may stay in internal storage

Choosing the SD card does not necessarily redirect every camera capture. Samsung Japan’s guidance says 8K video, UHD video at 60 fps, GIF capture, burst shots, and RAW files are stored in internal storage on the devices covered by that guidance; it says those files can be moved to the card afterward. Treat this as model- and software-specific guidance, not a guarantee for every Galaxy phone. Samsung Japan’s camera-storage page lists the exceptions.

Troubleshoot a missing or full SD card

  • There is no SD-card choice in Camera settings: Confirm that your exact phone supports removable storage and that a card is inserted and recognized. If the card is not being read, remove and reseat it, then check whether it appears in My Files.
  • The phone still saves some captures internally: Check whether they are among the capture types Samsung Japan identifies as exceptions, such as 8K, UHD 60 fps, GIF, burst, or RAW.
  • The card is full: Free space, use another compatible card, or switch the camera destination back to internal storage. A full card cannot accept additional saved files.
  • You cannot find a moved camera photo: In My Files, check SD card > DCIM > Camera. Before moving, camera images are commonly found under Internal storage > DCIM > Camera, as described in Samsung’s My Files guide.
