Save the original post before you report it. Open its permalink, record the account and capture time, take a full-page screenshot, and keep the URL, a PDF or HTML copy, hashes, and the platform’s report receipt together. A screenshot preserves what the page rendered; it does not by itself prove who authored the post, that an account is genuine, or that media was AI-generated.
This workflow works for social posts that may be edited, hidden, or deleted. It also explains how to preserve browser and file metadata so another person can inspect the same trail.
Why preservation comes before reporting
Reporting can cause a post or account to disappear. The Internet Society recommends copying the link and taking a screenshot before reporting, then opening the post itself and reporting the account when it impersonates a person or organization. Preserve first so the reviewer has the original URL and a visual record of what was displayed.

Step-by-step: build an evidence record
1. Open the original post
- Use the post’s permalink, not only a feed preview, search result, repost, or notification card.
- Copy the complete URL into a plain-text note. Preserve the platform name, account handle, profile URL, display name, visible date and time, and any post ID or permalink identifier.
- Open the post itself in a new tab. Confirm that the address bar points to the post page and that the content is not merely an embedded preview.
- Do not interact with links, attachments, or direct messages that could change the page or expose you to a scam. If the account is asking for money or credentials, preserve the record without responding.
2. Capture the entire rendered page in Firefox
Firefox Developer Tools can save the full rendered page rather than only the pixels currently visible in the viewport.
- Open the post in Firefox.
- Open Developer Tools with F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows/Linux, or Cmd+Option+I on macOS.
- In the Developer Tools toolbar, enable the screenshot button if it is not already shown. Firefox labels the command for a complete capture “Take a screenshot of the entire page.”
- Run that command and keep the resulting image in an evidence folder. Firefox Help documents a date-and-time-based filename and saving the file to Downloads; move it to your evidence folder without editing it.
Firefox’s Web Console also accepts :screenshot --fullpage. The resulting file is saved to Downloads. Keep the original file and make a working copy if you need to crop or annotate anything.
3. Preserve the context around the post
A full-page image should show as much of the surrounding page as the platform renders:

- platform branding and the post’s text;
- attached images, video thumbnails, or other media;
- visible timestamp, engagement counts, replies, and conversation context;
- labels indicating edited, sponsored, generated, or forwarded content.
The browser’s address bar is normally outside a webpage screenshot. Take a second visible-viewport capture that includes the address bar and the post, or record the exact URL separately in your notes. Keep the full-page image as the primary visual record and the viewport image as URL-and-state context.
4. Save companion records
When feasible, save a print-to-PDF or self-contained HTML copy as well as the image. Retain response headers or a capture log if your browser, archive process, or tooling provides them. Record these details in UTC:
- capture date and time;
- browser name and version;
- device and operating-system version;
- whether you were signed in;
- locale, timezone, and any content filters;
- which replies, media panels, or expandable sections you opened;
- the exact URL and the names of every saved file.
The U.S. Department of State’s social-media records guidance recommends copying or archiving records with related records unless a records-management application handles the lifecycle. Keeping the image, URL, notes, and report receipt together makes later review possible.

5. Protect the files with hashes and an untouched master
Create a SHA-256 manifest for the PNG, PDF or HTML copy, and notes. On Linux or macOS, from the folder containing the files, you can use:

Get-FileHash .notes.txt -Algorithm SHA256Keep one read-only or otherwise untouched evidence master. Perform redaction, resizing, OCR, or annotation only on copies, and keep those derivatives in a separate folder. If you later transfer the package, hash the transferred files again and compare the values with the manifest.
NIST distinguishes preservation of digital objects from preservation of the physical storage media that contain them. A USB flash drive can provide a redundant copy, but storage alone does not prove authorship or truth. Keep at least two copies in separate locations and document who handled each copy.
6. Add independent time evidence when the stakes justify it
A file’s creation time can change when it is copied between systems. If the capture time may be disputed, preserve a trusted timestamp or another independent time record for the SHA-256 manifest. NIST explains that trusted timestamping can provide assurance about when a digitally signed message was generated. Treat that timestamp as evidence of the recorded package’s existence at a time, not as proof that the post itself was truthful.

7. Report only after preservation
- Use the platform’s category for impersonation, manipulated media, scams, or misinformation, whichever best matches the conduct.
- Report both the post and the impersonating account when the platform offers separate report paths.
- Save the platform confirmation number, email, or in-app receipt in the same evidence folder.
- Update your notes with the report time in UTC and any change you observe afterward, such as removal, account suspension, or an edited caption.

Use a predictable folder so a reviewer can open the package without your browser session:

Do not overwrite the original when adding a note. If a correction is needed, append a dated entry that explains what changed and why.
Full-page image, viewport image, PDF, and HTML: use each for a different job
- Full-page image: preserves the complete rendered layout, including content below the fold and long reply threads that loaded on the page.
- Viewport image: shows the browser state at a particular moment and can include the address bar when the URL must be visible.
- PDF: provides a convenient paginated copy for review and printing, but pagination can separate a post from its context.
- Self-contained HTML: can retain selectable text and structure, but it may not render identically on another computer and can contain scripts or external references.
Keep the original URL and notes with every format. No single format is a substitute for the others when the post is important.

Dynamic, private, and disappearing posts
Content that loads after the first view
Wait until the post text, attached media, and the relevant replies are visible before capturing. If a full-page command omits lazy-loaded images, scroll through the page once, expand the sections you need, and capture again. Keep a note of which sections were expanded.

Private or login-required content
A public URL may not reproduce a page that was visible only while signed in. Record that you were signed in, preserve the URL, and use the platform’s own export or account-record tools when available. Do not share session cookies or credentials with a capture service or another person.
Disappearing, geo-targeted, or age-restricted content
Capture immediately, record your location or locale when relevant, and note any access restriction. If the content cannot be rendered again, preserve the files, headers, and notes you already obtained rather than repeatedly refreshing and changing the state.
Posts that change while you work
Take a second viewport capture if the timestamp, caption, engagement count, or replies change. Keep both versions, hash both files, and describe the difference in your notes instead of deleting the earlier capture.

The full-page command captures only the visible viewport
Confirm that you used Firefox’s entire-page screenshot command or :screenshot --fullpage, not the ordinary camera or viewport command. If the page is inside an embedded frame, open the post’s own permalink in a top-level tab and repeat the capture.
Images or replies are missing
Allow lazy content to load, scroll through the page, expand the relevant reply or media sections, and capture again. Record which content was unavailable; do not silently fill gaps with a cropped or edited image.
The URL is not visible in the image
That is expected when the browser address bar is outside the webpage. Take a separate viewport capture including the address bar or preserve the URL in the notes and in the browser’s saved page or PDF metadata.

The post is blocked, blank, or replaced by a consent dialog
Record the exact message and capture the state if it is relevant. Do not claim that a blank capture proves the post was removed. Try the original permalink in an authorized session, and preserve any platform export or notification that confirms removal.
A hash changes after copying
Check whether a program recompressed the image, rewrote PDF metadata, or converted line endings in the notes. Hash the untouched master, keep the altered derivative separate, and document the operation rather than replacing the original.
The platform removes the post after reporting
Keep the original files, URL, report receipt, and handling log. The report receipt shows that a complaint was submitted; it does not independently verify the post’s authorship or allegations.
What a screenshot can and cannot establish
A screenshot documents what a page rendered at a particular capture time. It can preserve visible wording, account labels, media, timestamps, and surrounding context before they change. By itself, it does not establish:
- who authored the content;
- that the account is genuine or controlled by the person it names;
- that an image, audio clip, or video was generated by AI;
- that the page was not edited before capture;
- that the claims in the post are true.
NISTIR 8387 describes digital evidence as having preservation problems distinct from traditional evidence. Treat the screenshot as one component of a package containing the URL, related files, notes, hashes, timestamps where justified, and reporting receipts. Platform menus, browser labels, and account visibility change, and private, logged-in, disappearing, or geo-targeted content may require a platform export, screen recording, or legal-process route beyond this workflow.
