PS1 classics on a PS5 can be downloaded or streamed, depending on the game, your country, and your PlayStation Plus entitlement. A downloaded game keeps its save in the console’s storage. A streamed game keeps progress in PlayStation’s streaming storage. To move progress between those versions, copy the save through PlayStation Plus cloud storage, then download it to the destination. Downloaded catalog games work without a continuous connection, but Sony requires the console to contact PSN at least once every seven days to verify membership; streaming always needs the internet.
What you need before downloading a PS1 classic
Your PS5 must be signed in to the PSN account that either bought the game or holds the PlayStation Plus entitlement that includes it. The game must also be offered in your market and on your plan. Sony changes catalog contents and limits streaming by title and region, so the listing shown on your own console is the authority for a particular game.
Purchase or subscription access
A separately purchased eligible classic remains tied to the purchasing account. A PlayStation Plus catalog title is available only while your membership is active and the title remains in the catalog. If Sony removes a catalog game, access ends unless you purchase it separately.

Cloud saves are a PlayStation Plus feature. If you intend to transfer a streamed save to a download, make sure the account has the required online-storage entitlement before starting.

How to find and download a PS1 classic on PS5
- Sign in to the correct account. On the PS5, use the PSN account that purchased the classic or owns the qualifying PlayStation Plus membership. A family member’s account will not automatically inherit another user’s purchase entitlement.
- Open Game Library. From the home screen, select Game Library. Sony describes this library as the place where PS5 and PS4 games you purchased or played appear, including games accessed through PlayStation Plus.
- Filter or search for the title. Look in your collection, the PlayStation Plus area, or the catalog listing. If the classic is absent, check the account, membership status and regional store before troubleshooting the console.
- Open the game page. Select the PS1 title to see the delivery methods available for that specific listing. You may see Download, Stream, or both.
- Choose Download. Select Download and wait for the installation to finish. The game’s icon will show its download progress; you can launch it after installation reaches the playable state shown by the PS5.
- Use Stream when Download is not offered. Select Stream if the title and your market support cloud streaming. Streaming does not install the game’s program on the console, so it cannot be started without an internet connection.
Do not assume that one PS1 title’s options apply to another. Sony qualifies original PlayStation availability by market, plan and title, and a game can be downloadable without being streamable, or streamable only in selected countries.
If the game is not shown
- Verify that you are signed in to the account that made the purchase or has the subscription.
- Check Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions to confirm the membership is active.
- Look at the current PlayStation Store or PlayStation Plus listing for your country; catalog rotation can remove a title without changing your console software.
- Restore licenses from Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses if a purchased item is missing after confirming the account.
Where PS1 classic saves are stored
The save location is determined by how you are playing, not by the game’s age.

Sony states: “If you’re streaming a PlayStation Plus game, the saved data is stored on PlayStation.” For a downloaded game, “the saved data is saved to the console storage of your PS5 console or PS4 console.” The two locations are separate, so launching a downloaded copy does not automatically import the progress created while streaming.

Use the game’s own save system
Inside a downloaded PS1 classic, save through the game’s original save menu or any virtual-memory-card feature supplied by that release. Closing the game without saving does not create a recoverable console save. Streaming uses the service’s saved-data handling, but you should still save at an appropriate in-game point before leaving the stream.

Transfer a streamed save to the downloaded version
The reliable bridge is PlayStation Plus cloud storage. First copy the streamed save to cloud storage, then download that cloud copy to the console storage used by the downloaded game. The same method works in the opposite direction when you want to return to streaming.
Start from a streamed game on PS5
- While the classic is streaming, press the PS button.
- Open the PlayStation Plus card.
- Select Manage Saved Data.
- Follow the on-screen copy instructions to place the streamed save in PlayStation Plus cloud storage.
- Exit the stream only after the copy completes. Do not treat a suspended stream as proof that the cloud copy finished.
Download the cloud copy to PS5 console storage
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4), matching the format shown for the classic.
- Select Download or Delete from Cloud Storage.
- Choose Download to Console Storage, select the relevant save and confirm.
- Start the downloaded game and check its load screen. If it still shows no progress, close the game completely and reopen it after the download has finished.
A streamed and downloaded edition must expose compatible save data for this transfer to work. If the game appears as a different release or uses a different save format, the PS5 may not present the file as importable. Do not delete the cloud copy while testing.
Upload an existing downloaded save for streaming
- Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Select Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4).
- Choose Upload or Delete from Console Storage, then Upload to Cloud Storage.
- Select the classic’s save and confirm the upload.
- Launch the streamed version and use its Manage Saved Data controls to copy the cloud save into the streaming service.
Keep only one version as your active master while switching back and forth. Playing both versions before synchronizing can leave two different save states; choose the newer, verified file rather than overwriting it accidentally.
Automatic synchronization and PS4-format saves
PS5 games can use automatic synchronization. Enable it at Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) > Sync Saved Data > Auto-Sync Saved Data. Sony says the PS5 console and cloud storage synchronize to the most recent data for PS5 saves.

Many PS1 classics are presented as PS4-format software on PS5. Sony says PS4-format saves on a PS5 are automatically uploaded when automatic sync is enabled, but they must be manually downloaded to PS5 console storage. For those games, use the explicit Download or Delete from Cloud Storage path after changing consoles or moving from streaming.
Automatic upload is not the same as an immediate two-way merge. Before replacing a local file, check its timestamp and, if necessary, upload the current local save manually so the cloud contains the state you actually want.
Can you play downloaded PS1 classics offline?
Yes, a downloaded game from the Extra or Premium/Deluxe catalogs can be played without a continuous internet connection. Sony requires the PS5 to connect to PSN at least once every seven days to validate the membership, so offline play is not permanent if the console stays disconnected beyond that check. A purchased classic is subject to the normal license check for that account.

Manage console and cloud storage
See and delete local saves
For saves on the PS5, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings, choose Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4), then select Console Storage. Deleting a save here removes local progress but does not uninstall the game. If the same file exists in cloud storage, it remains there until you delete that copy separately.
See and delete cloud saves
Use Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5/PS4) > Download or Delete from Cloud Storage > Delete. Deleting from this menu removes the cloud copy; it does not remove a local copy already on the console. Keep a backup copy in one location before deleting anything you may need.
Cloud capacity and file limits
Sony’s current support information provides up to 100 GB of PS5 saved data and 100 GB of PS4 saved data in PlayStation Plus cloud storage. PS4 storage is limited to 1,000 saved-data files. These limits concern saved data, not the installed game itself, so removing a game to free installation space does not automatically remove its saves.

The Download button is missing
Check whether the title is stream-only in your country, whether your plan includes it, and whether the catalog listing has changed. A Premium subscription does not make every classic downloadable or streamable everywhere. If you own the game but see only a subscription listing, switch to the purchasing account and restore licenses.

The downloaded game starts with no save
Confirm that the stream save was copied to cloud storage, then download it under the correct PS5/PS4 save-data category. Close and relaunch the downloaded game after the transfer. If the file is visible in cloud storage but not offered by the game, the streamed and downloaded releases may not expose a compatible save format.
The streamed game shows older progress
Upload the newest local save before starting the stream, then use the streamed game’s Manage Saved Data controls to copy that cloud file into streaming storage. Avoid alternating between devices without completing this sequence, because each device can continue from a different state.
The console says membership must be checked
Connect the PS5 to PSN and let the license validation complete. Catalog games require a membership check at least every seven days for offline use. If the membership expired or the title left the catalog, the installed game will not remain playable through that subscription.
Cloud storage appears full
In the cloud-save management screen, remove obsolete files only after confirming that the local or another cloud copy is safe. The PS4 limit is measured in files as well as total capacity, so many small saves can reach the file limit before 100 GB is used.
A safe routine for switching between stream and download
- Save normally in the game and exit cleanly.
- Use Manage Saved Data from the PlayStation Plus card when streaming, or the console-storage upload menu when playing a download.
- Verify the cloud copy’s timestamp before changing devices or delivery methods.
- Download the cloud file to console storage when moving to the installed version, or copy it into streaming storage when moving back to a stream.
- Launch the destination version and load the expected slot before deleting any older copy.
This sequence separates three different locations—console storage, cloud storage and streaming storage—so a license check, catalog change or device switch does not accidentally look like lost progress.
What to check for a specific game
- Country: Is the title listed in your local PlayStation Store or PlayStation Plus catalog?
- Plan: Is it included with your current membership, or is a purchase required?
- Delivery: Does the listing show Download, Stream, or both?
- Save format: Does the game appear under PS5 or PS4 saved data?
- Continuity: Will the catalog title remain available for the period you intend to play?
- Connection: Can your console complete the seven-day membership validation, and does your network support streaming if you choose it?
Checking these items on the game’s current listing prevents the most common mistake: assuming that all PS1 classics have identical plans, delivery methods or save behavior.
