For one conversation, open it on the Character.AI website, load the messages you need, press Ctrl+P (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+P (Mac), and choose Save as PDF. For an account-wide backup, request Character.AI’s official export from your profile settings. To preserve only a visible passage, take overlapping screenshots. These methods serve different purposes: export covers account data, PDF is searchable for one loaded chat, and screenshots preserve the on-screen appearance.
Choose the right way to save a Character.AI chat
Start by deciding whether you need every available conversation or a particular exchange. The official export is the authoritative account-level route, but Character.AI says it may take 3–4 weeks. Browser printing is immediate, while screenshots are best for selected scenes or visual evidence.

Do not treat a screenshot as a complete backup. It cannot include messages that were never visible, hidden history, character settings, persona text, or media outside the captured area.

Request the official Character.AI data export
Use this route when you want an account-level copy and can wait for asynchronous processing. The emailed download link is stated to remain valid for seven days, so request it only when you can monitor the email account connected to Character.AI.

On the web
- Sign in to Character.AI in your browser.
- Open Profile.
- Select Profile Settings.
- Open Account.
- Choose Manage Account & Data.
- Select Export Data and submit the request.
In the mobile app
- Open the app and tap Profile.
- Tap Settings.
- Open Legal & Privacy.
- Choose Export Data and submit the request.
What to expect after requesting it
- Character.AI currently warns that processing can take 3–4 weeks.
- Watch the email address associated with your account, including its spam or junk folder.
- When the message arrives, download the archive within the stated seven-day link window.
- Save the downloaded files in at least two locations before opening or reorganizing them.
This export is not an instant, single-chat PDF. If you need one conversation today, use browser printing while the export is pending.
Save one Character.AI conversation as a searchable PDF
Printing works best from a desktop browser because long chats load progressively and desktop browsers expose the complete print dialog.
Prepare the conversation
- Open the specific chat on the Character.AI website.
- Scroll upward through the conversation until the earliest message you need has loaded. If older messages appear only after additional scrolling, continue until the required range is present.
- Scroll through the loaded range once more and check that there are no loading indicators, blank message cards, or missing turns.
Print to PDF
- Press Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or Cmd+P on macOS.
- In the printer destination list, choose Save as PDF (the wording can vary slightly by browser).
- Set the page orientation and paper size that keep message bubbles readable. Enable background graphics only if the colors or layout matter to your record.
- Choose a filename that includes the character, chat subject, and capture date, then save the file.
Verify that the PDF is complete
- Check the page count and skim the first and last pages.
- Use the PDF viewer’s search command to find a distinctive sentence from the middle of the conversation.
- Compare the final visible message in the PDF with the chat window. If the sentence is absent, return to the conversation, load more history, and print again.
A PDF can omit messages that had not loaded when printing began. A successful save dialog by itself does not prove that the entire conversation was included.
Take screenshots of a Character.AI conversation
Screenshots are appropriate when appearance matters or when you need a small, quickly shareable excerpt. Capture successive sections rather than trying to fit a long exchange into one image.

Desktop capture
- Resize the browser so the message text is comfortable to read and close unrelated tabs or panels.
- Scroll to the first passage you want.
- Use your operating system’s built-in screen-capture command to select the chat area. On Windows, the Snipping Tool can capture a rectangular region; on macOS, Shift+Cmd+4 selects a region.
- Scroll until the next section overlaps the previous image by a few lines, then capture again. The overlap preserves the order when the files are viewed separately.
- Name files sequentially, such as
character-chat-001.png,character-chat-002.png, and so on.
Phone or tablet capture
Use the device’s normal screenshot gesture or button combination, then scroll and repeat for the next section. If your phone offers a scrolling or full-page screenshot, inspect the result carefully: dynamic chat pages can stop before all messages, and the feature may capture only the currently rendered content.
Keep screenshots understandable
- Include enough of the interface to identify the character and conversation, but avoid exposing account details, notifications, or unrelated private messages.
- Keep a consistent zoom level and overlap each image.
- Store the images in a dated folder and preserve the original PNG or JPEG files rather than relying only on a compressed messaging-app copy.
Older chats, the retired beta site, and missing history
Character.AI retired its old/beta site and said chats were preserved on the newer site and app. Some older conversations may still require manual migration. If a chat is absent, sign in with the same account method you originally used, check both the web and app versions, and look for a migration or older-chat control before assuming the messages were deleted.
Do not print or screenshot until the conversation has finished loading. A missing section can be a loading or migration issue rather than permanent loss.

Privacy and retention decisions
Choose the method according to what the saved file may reveal. The official export keeps the request inside Character.AI’s account workflow. A PDF or screenshot is a new copy that can be synced, emailed, indexed, or backed up elsewhere.

- Use a clear filename without sensitive character or personal details when the file will be shared.
- Store private chats in an encrypted or access-controlled location.
- Remove browser notifications, profile identifiers, and unrelated tabs before taking screenshots.
- Keep the original export archive unchanged; make working copies for conversion or annotation.
- Before sharing, search the PDF and inspect every screenshot for names, email addresses, tokens, or other personal information.

Troubleshooting
The PDF contains only the newest messages
The earlier turns were probably not loaded. Scroll upward until the required history appears, wait for rendering to finish, then print again. Verify with a distinctive sentence from the middle.

The print preview is blank or badly formatted
Wait for the chat to render, reload the page, and retry from a desktop browser. If the preview still omits the conversation, use the official export for account preservation and screenshots for the passages that are visible.
A screenshot cuts off a message
Use a smaller selected region or capture the message in two overlapping images. Avoid excessive browser zoom, and keep the overlap when scrolling.

Check that you used the original sign-in method, inspect both the current website and app, and look for a manual migration path for older chats. Character.AI has said older chats may need migration even though chats were preserved on the newer service.
The export email never arrives
Confirm the account email, check spam and filtering rules, and allow the stated 3–4-week processing period. If the seven-day download window expires, request another export rather than relying on an old link.

The API capture shows a consent dialog or an error page
Check the response’s X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers, confirm the URL is accessible without an interactive login, and add an appropriate wait condition or cookies in the request. A bot check, blank page, timeout, or failed load is identified as non-billable by ScreenshotNeo.

- Request the official export first if the conversation is important or account-wide recovery matters.
- Immediately print the individual chat to PDF after loading and checking the required history.
- Capture screenshots only for passages where the visual layout or exact on-screen presentation matters.
