In EA SPORTS FC 25, press Left on the directional buttons to open My Tactics, then press the direction assigned to your prepared tactic. The team may need a short transition period, especially while the ball is in play. In EA SPORTS FC 26, EA documents saving and loading reusable tactic codes, but the source available here does not verify that the FC 25 directional-button sequence is unchanged.
The safest workflow is therefore version-aware: prepare clearly named tactics before kickoff, use the documented FC 25 match-switch procedure only when you are playing FC 25, and use FC 26’s Save Code and Load Saved Code tools to preserve or transfer configurations between supported modes.
What you can do in each version
The phrase “custom tactics” covers two related tasks:
- In-match selection: choosing one of the tactics already assigned to your team so the active formation, tactical settings and player roles change during the game.
- Tactic-code management: saving a configuration as a code and loading it again later, including in another supported game mode.
EA’s documentation gives a complete directional-button procedure for FC 25. EA’s FC 26 gameplay documentation explains tactic-code management and cross-mode reuse, but the retrieved passage does not state the exact button sequence for switching tactics during a live FC 26 match. Do not treat the FC 25 control as independently confirmed for FC 26.

Prepare custom tactics before the match
Create or edit the tactic slots
Open the game’s custom-tactics area before entering a match. Build the setups you expect to need, then give each one a short, distinctive name. In FC 25, EA says you can configure as many as five custom tactics. Each can have its own name, formation, tactical settings and player roles, while the lineup is shared between them. That means you are changing the team’s tactical behavior and positioning instructions, not creating five unrelated squads.
Use names that remain readable in the small My Tactics panel. A simple intent-based pattern works well:
- Balanced: your normal opening setup.
- Press: the setup you want when you need to regain the ball.
- Protect: the setup for managing a lead or slowing the match.
- Chase: the setup for pursuing a goal late in the game.
- Reset: a controlled alternative for stabilizing the match after a chaotic spell.
These names are examples, not EA-defined presets. Choose labels that describe your own configurations and that you can distinguish instantly while play is moving.

Because FC 25 shares the lineup across custom tactics, verify the players you intend to use before kickoff. Then inspect every tactic’s formation, settings and roles. A tactic can be correctly saved yet still produce an unexpected result if one of its role assignments or positional instructions was left in an earlier draft.
Make the selection order memorable
Arrange the tactics so the directions shown in My Tactics match your mental order. For example, put your everyday setup first and the emergency or highly attacking setup later. The objective is to reduce menu reading when you are under pressure; the game will show the tactic names and formations, but clear preparation lets you confirm the choice quickly.

How to switch custom tactics during an FC 25 match
EA’s FC 25 FC IQ guide documents this sequence. It uses the functional label “directional buttons” rather than a console-specific face-button instruction.
- Press Left on the directional buttons. This opens My Tactics during the match.
- Read the list. The panel shows your tactic names and formations. EA describes the active tactic as appearing at the top of the list, so use the display to confirm which setup is currently active.
- Press the direction associated with the tactic you want. This requests that tactic. EA explains that, when the change is made in-game, “your team will switch to that tactic.”
- Keep playing while the change completes. The players transition to their new positions and roles; they do not instantly teleport into the new shape.
- Confirm the result from the next phase of play. Once the transition has finished, check that the team’s spacing and roles match the setup you intended.
EA warns that you may see a “Tactical Change in Progress” message. Its explanation is precise: “After requesting a change, you might see a ‘Tactical Change in Progress’ message, meaning that your tactics have not yet taken effect.” Treat the message as a pending request, not as a failed selection.

The game has to move players into their new positions and apply their new roles. The change can complete more quickly when the ball goes out of play or when you make the request while play is already out of play. If you request a switch during an active attack or defensive transition, allow time for the team to settle before judging whether the tactic worked.
Use stoppages deliberately
For a low-risk change, wait for a throw-in, goal kick, free kick, corner, half-time interval or another natural stoppage. If the match situation demands an immediate change, request it anyway, but avoid assuming the new shape is fully active during the first seconds afterward. The documented behavior is a transition, not an instant reset.
Save and reuse tactic codes in FC 26
FC 26 adds a code-based way to preserve a tactic configuration. EA’s Gameplay Deep Dive describes two controls on the My Tactics screen: Save Code for creating a saved code and Use Code for loading one.

Save a tactic code
- Open My Tactics and display the tactic you want to preserve.
- Open the tactic-management controls.
- Choose Save Code.
- Keep the resulting code with a meaningful note outside the game if you manage several variants. Record the tactical purpose and the date you created it so an old code is not mistaken for your current setup.
EA states that FC 26 supports up to 10 saved tactic codes. If the saved-code list is full, overwrite an existing entry rather than expecting an additional slot to appear.

Load a saved code
- Open the Use Code panel from My Tactics.
- Use the right stick to select Load Saved Code.
- Choose the saved code you want to load.
- Review the resulting tactic before entering a match, especially its formation, tactical settings and player roles.
Loading a code is a configuration-management action. It is different from selecting a prepared tactic during live play: the code preserves or transfers a setup, while the in-match command changes the active team arrangement.
Modes covered by EA’s FC 26 documentation
EA says saved tactic codes work in and between Ultimate Team, Career Mode, Kick-Off, Seasons and Friendlies. This makes a code useful when you want to carry a tested configuration from one of those modes to another, subject to the game’s own squad and mode requirements.
FC 26 match switching: what is confirmed and what is not
The available FC 26 source confirms Save Code, Use Code, Load Saved Code, the 10-code limit and the supported modes. It does not confirm the exact directional-button sequence for switching among tactics during a live FC 26 match.
For that reason, use the following rule:
- Playing FC 25: use Left on the directional buttons to open My Tactics, then select the desired tactic with its associated direction.
- Playing FC 26: use the in-game controls screen or the current FC 26 help documentation to verify the live-switch command for your platform and control layout. Do not assume the FC 25 sequence is officially confirmed simply because the games are related.
This distinction matters if you play across both releases or if an update, remapped controller layout or mode-specific interface changes the available command.

In-match selection versus tactic-code reuse

Use live selection when the decision is about the current match state. Use a code when the decision is about preserving a setup, moving it between supported modes or rebuilding a tactic after changing other configurations.
A fast, low-error routine for match day
Before kickoff
- Open each custom tactic and read its name, formation and role assignments.
- Confirm that the shared lineup contains the players you expect to use.
- Put the tactics in an order that reflects your likely decisions: normal play, pressure, protection and late-game attack.
- In FC 26, save a code for any configuration you may want to reuse in another supported mode.
- Check your controller layout in the game if you have remapped directional buttons or use a platform-specific control scheme.
During the match
- Identify the tactical objective first: regain the ball, protect space, stabilize possession or increase attacking risk.
- In FC 25, press Left on the directional buttons and read the names and formations before selecting.
- Request the tactic and watch for the transition message.
- During the transition, avoid making a second tactical request unless the match situation requires it; a new request can make it harder to tell which setup is being applied.
- Use a stoppage whenever the situation allows, because EA says changes made out of play can complete more quickly.
After the match
If a tactic behaved differently from what you expected, edit the saved configuration before the next match rather than relying on memory. In FC 26, save a new code when the revised version is worth preserving. If the code list is full, replace an obsolete entry and keep your naming notes synchronized with the saved list.

The menu does not open
First verify the game version. The documented Left-direction workflow belongs to FC 25. If you are in FC 26, open the game’s controls or help screen and confirm the current live-switch command. Also check whether your directional buttons have been remapped.
The wrong tactic activates
Open My Tactics and compare the displayed names and formations. Similar labels are easy to confuse, especially when several tactics share a formation. Rename them with distinct intent-based labels and place the most frequently used setup where you can identify it quickly.
The players have not moved yet
Look for “Tactical Change in Progress.” EA says this message means the requested tactics have not yet taken effect. Give the players time to transition, and if possible make the request during a stoppage or while the ball is out of play.

The tactic looks incomplete after switching
Remember that the lineup is shared across FC 25 custom tactics, while formation, tactical settings and player roles can differ. Reopen the tactic outside the match and inspect those three areas individually. A role or setting that was not saved in the version you intended can make a valid switch appear incorrect.
A saved FC 26 code is missing
Return to Use Code, choose Load Saved Code with the right stick and inspect the saved-code list. If you already reached the 10-code limit, an existing entry may have been overwritten. Keep a written label for each code so you can identify the correct one before loading it.
The code works in one mode but not as expected in another
EA lists Ultimate Team, Career Mode, Kick-Off, Seasons and Friendlies as supported for FC 26 saved tactic codes. The code transfers the tactic configuration, but the surrounding mode still supplies its own squad and match context. Review the loaded formation, settings and roles before playing rather than assuming every contextual detail will be identical.

Do not confuse FC 26 presets with your custom tactics
EA’s FC 26 gameplay material uses the names Competitive and Authentic for gameplay presets. Those labels describe preset gameplay behavior; they are not names for a user’s saved custom tactics and should not be treated as additional tactic slots or tactic codes.
Platform and control-layout caveats
The documented FC 25 instruction is intentionally expressed as “directional buttons.” Platform-specific glyphs, remapped controls and mode-specific differences are not established by the cited material. If your controller uses a custom mapping, consult the in-game controls screen and follow the functional action assigned to opening My Tactics rather than relying on a console-specific icon from another guide.
