Among the Trolls does not use autosaves, according to the launch FAQ summary. You create progress manually at a bed or shelter. Interact with the save point, wait for the save to finish, and make another save before a dungeon, dangerous fight, or long crossing. If your character dies, load the latest save you deliberately created; the game does not send you to an automatic checkpoint. On Windows, the local files are listed in the game’s Saved/SaveGames folder and use the .sav extension. Steam Cloud can synchronize those files, but Steam Support warns that Cloud is not a guaranteed historical backup and cannot recover every lost save.
How saving works in Among the Trolls
The launch guidance describes a manual-save system rather than an automatic checkpoint system. Beds and shelters are the documented save points. Reaching one is not enough by itself: you must use the game’s save interaction and allow it to complete. Because there is no autosave, actions taken after your last completed manual save are vulnerable if you die or otherwise lose access to the current session.
This changes how you should plan an expedition. Treat every completed bed or shelter save as a restore point. Before you leave that safe point for a high-risk activity, create a fresh save. The launch material specifically calls out dungeons, dangerous combat, and lengthy travel as situations where saving first matters.
Save your game: the reliable sequence
- Reach a bed or shelter. These are the documented locations where progress can be saved.
- Start the save interaction. Use the prompt or interaction offered by the bed or shelter in your current game session.
- Wait for completion. Do not close the game, quit to the desktop, or immediately move away while the save is still processing. The practical guidance is to wait until the interaction has completed before treating the point as a restore location.
- Make a pre-expedition save. Save again immediately before entering a dungeon, beginning a dangerous fight, or setting out on a long crossing. This gives you a recent deliberate restore point rather than relying on an older bed or shelter.
- Resume only after the save is complete. Once the interaction has finished, continue with the activity. If you die, load this most recent completed save.
The game’s launch guidance relays the instruction to “save often.” In practice, that means saving at each available safe point and adding an extra save immediately before a section where death would erase a large amount of travel, exploration, or preparation.

What happens when you die
Death returns you to the save you selected, not to an automatic checkpoint. The useful distinction is between completed manual saves and progress that exists only in the current run. If you explored, collected items, or crossed a large area after your last bed or shelter save, that later progress may not be present when you reload.
- Saved before the danger: load that recent save and restart from the safe point.
- Did not save before the danger: load the latest earlier save you created at a bed or shelter.
- Cannot find the expected save: stop making changes, then compare the local and Steam Cloud copies before selecting a file or resolving a conflict.
Saving immediately before a risky section is therefore more than a convenience. It limits the amount of progress that a death can cost and avoids replaying an unnecessarily long crossing or preparation sequence.
Where Among the Trolls stores saves on Windows
SteamDB lists the local save directory as:

Back up the folder before troubleshooting
- Close Among the Trolls so no save is being written.
- Open the installation’s
Among_the_Trolls/Saved/SaveGamesdirectory. - Copy the entire
SaveGamesfolder to a separate location, such as another drive or a dated backup folder. - Keep the original files unchanged while you investigate a missing or older save.
A dated copy preserves the state you had before experimenting with Steam Cloud or replacing files. It also lets you return to the exact local files that existed at the time of the problem instead of trying to reconstruct them later.
How Steam Cloud fits into saving
The launch guide reports Steam Cloud support for the game. Steam’s documentation describes Cloud as a way to store and synchronize save games between the local installation and Steam’s service. It is not the same as an unlimited versioned backup.

Cloud should therefore be treated as synchronization, not as a guaranteed archive of every previous state. A Cloud copy may be newer than the file on one computer, or the local copy may contain progress that has not finished synchronizing. The dates and times shown in a conflict window are the evidence to use when deciding which version is more valuable.
Resolve a Steam Cloud conflict without overwriting the better save
If Steam reports a difference between local and Cloud data, do not choose an option by habit. First identify which copy contains the session you want.

- Stop launching the game repeatedly. Additional launches can create more opportunities to synchronize the wrong copy.
- Read the timestamps. Steam’s guidance is to evaluate the dates and times of the local and Cloud files in the conflict window.
- Relate the time to your last session. If you played recently on this computer, a newer local time may represent that session. If you last played on another machine, the newer Cloud time may contain it.
- Make a local backup first. Copy the current
SaveGamesfolder before accepting either side. - Keep the copy that matches the progress you need. Choose the local or Cloud version only after comparing the timestamps and your last known play session.
- Launch once and verify. Check that the expected character and progress are present before deleting any backup.
If neither timestamp corresponds to the progress you remember, preserve both copies and continue with the missing-save checks below. Steam Support’s statement that Cloud cannot recover lost saves means repeatedly forcing synchronization is not a recovery method.
What to do if a bed save does not restore
Player reports on the official Steam community page describe cases in which progress did not return after a bed save. Those reports are anecdotal and do not establish a confirmed developer diagnosis, so treat them as warning signs rather than proof of a particular bug.
Check that the save actually completed
Return to the sequence above: the bed or shelter must be used, and the interaction must finish. If you walked away, quit, or closed the game while the save was still processing, the expected restore point may not have been written.

Before replacing files or accepting a Cloud conflict, copy the Windows SaveGames folder. Then compare the local and Cloud timestamps. Keeping both copies prevents a troubleshooting attempt from destroying the only version that contains your progress.

Test one change at a time
- Do not delete the local folder while you are still determining whether it contains the newer save.
- Do not repeatedly switch between local and Cloud choices without recording which one you selected.
- After a choice, launch the game once and check the result before taking another action.
If the restored game still lacks the expected progress, retain your backup and report the behavior through the game’s current support channels. The available player reports do not identify a universal fix, and save behavior can change with later patches.
Use a practical save routine for long journeys
A repeatable routine reduces both lost time and uncertainty:
- At a safe point: save at the bed or shelter and wait for completion.
- Before a commitment: save again before a dungeon, dangerous fight, or long crossing.
- After returning: once you reach safety again, create another completed save so the successful return is preserved.
- Before maintenance: close the game and back up the Windows save folder before changing machines or investigating Cloud problems.
This routine does not add an autosave feature; it simply places deliberate restore points where the cost of failure is highest.
Moving your progress to another Windows PC
The local files give you a direct way to preserve a copy when changing machines. Close the game on the old PC, copy the complete SaveGames folder from the listed path, and keep that copy dated. On the destination PC, locate the corresponding Among_the_Trolls/Saved/SaveGames directory before making any replacement. Back up whatever is already there, then place the preserved files in the matching folder and launch the game.

Steam Cloud may also synchronize progress between computers, but synchronization is not a substitute for the dated local copy. If Steam presents a conflict after the move, compare timestamps and select the version that contains the intended progress. Keep the backup until you have opened the game and confirmed the result.

Version and support limitations
Among the Trolls launched on Steam for PC on 14 October 2026. The save behavior described here reflects the launch guidance available at that time. Later patches can change save handling, fix reported issues, or alter the wording of the in-game interaction. If a future update changes the behavior, use the current FAQ and patch notes as the authority for that newer version.
The most defensible recovery evidence is the combination of a completed bed or shelter save, the local .sav files, and the timestamps shown for local and Cloud copies. When those do not contain the progress you need, there is no documented guarantee that Steam Cloud can reconstruct it.
