Save each restaurant, hotel, attraction, or other stop to a named Google Maps list. Open the place, select Save, then choose an existing list or create one. For a group itinerary, share that list rather than sharing individual saved places. Lists collect locations; they do not create a route, and they are separate from offline maps and saved frequent trips.
What you need before saving places
Sign in to a Google Account. Google Maps associates saved places and lists with that account, so signing in is required for the places to remain available across your devices. If you use more than one Google Account, check the profile currently active in Maps before you begin; otherwise, a list can seem to disappear simply because you are viewing a different account.
The exact placement of controls can change between Android, iPhone, iPad, desktop browsers, and app versions. The control you are looking for is usually labeled Save; on mobile, your lists are generally under the You tab. Google’s current help pages describe the main workflows for computers, list management, and Android’s You tab.
Decide how you want to organize the trip before you save dozens of places. A single master list is quick for collecting ideas, while separate lists by city, day, neighborhood, or category are easier to use once you are traveling. You can refine the structure later, so do not wait for a perfect itinerary before capturing a useful place.

Save a place to Google Maps
On a computer
- Open Google Maps in a browser and search for a business, landmark, address, or coordinates, or click a location on the map.
- Open the place’s information panel and select Save.
- Choose an existing list. To start a new collection, select the option to create a new list, enter its name, and save it.
The location is now an entry in that list. Saving it does not download the surrounding map and does not preserve a turn-by-turn route. If the place is not a named business, a map click or coordinates can still represent a trailhead, viewpoint, meeting point, or other temporary stop.
After saving, you can usually continue searching for the next stop without leaving Maps. Use a consistent naming scheme so the list remains understandable when you return to it weeks later, such as “Lisbon – food” or “Day 2 – Alfama.”
On Android
- Search for a place in the Google Maps app, or press and hold on the map to drop a pin.
- Tap the place name or address card that appears at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap Save, then select a list or create a new one.
Google documents this workflow in its Save favorite places help. A dropped pin can be saved even when it is not a named business, which is useful for trailheads, viewpoints, meeting points, or temporary stops.
If you only see a search suggestion, open the full place card first. The Save control belongs to the place details panel, so tapping the result’s name or address is often the step that makes it appear.
On iPhone or iPad
Search for the location, open its place card, and use the app’s current Save control to select or create a list. Button placement and wording can differ by app version, so follow the list choice shown after opening the place card rather than assuming it will be in the same position as Android. The important sequence is the same: identify the place, open its details, tap Save, and select the destination list.
Create a list that matches your trip
A list is the organizing unit in Google Maps. From the desktop Saved area, or from You on mobile, choose New list. Give it a name that tells you when or why you will use it. Google’s list tools also let you add a description and an icon, then edit, hide, show, or delete the list later. The computer list instructions are documented in Google Maps Help.
A useful name is specific enough to distinguish the list from future trips. “Paris” may be ambiguous if you visit again; “Paris – October 2026 food” identifies the destination, purpose, and timing at a glance. Put broader instructions in the description, such as “Mostly walkable options near the hotel” or “Check opening days before choosing.”
Useful list structures
- One list per trip: “Kyoto spring trip” keeps every candidate stop together when you are still planning.
- One list per category: Separate lists such as “Tokyo – food,” “Tokyo – sights,” and “Tokyo – hotels” make a large trip easier to scan.
- One list per day: “Day 1 – Shibuya” and “Day 2 – Asakusa” work well when the schedule is already fixed.
- One list per neighborhood: Grouping nearby places helps you build a day around a compact area instead of crossing the city repeatedly.
- Backup options: Keep restaurants or attractions you may use if weather, opening hours, or reservations change in a separate backup list.
Choose one structure before adding dozens of locations. A single place can be saved to more than one list, so you can keep a master trip list while also grouping the same restaurant by day or category. For example, a restaurant can remain in “Tokyo – food” and also appear in “Day 3 – Shinjuku.”
Do not confuse a list with a schedule. A list records candidate locations; it does not arrange them in visit order or estimate travel time. Once your choices are settled, use the map view and regular directions to decide the sequence.

Organize and edit saved places
Find your lists
On desktop, open the Saved section in Google Maps. On Android, open the You tab and select your saved lists. Google’s Android guide covers locating, searching, and filtering saved places in that area: Find your places and lists in the You tab. On iPhone and iPad, look for the equivalent saved-places area in the current app interface; labels can change after updates.
Open a list to see its entries and the locations plotted on the map. The map view is useful for spotting clusters, isolated stops, and places that belong on different days. A list that looks manageable as text can reveal a long cross-city trip when all of its pins are visible together.

Move places between lists
Open a list, select the place or places you want to change, and use the list-management controls to add them to another list or remove them from the current one. If you are sorting a long collection, Google’s Android tools support selecting places and moving the selection into a list. This is faster than opening every place individually when you are converting a master list into day-by-day collections.
Keep the original master list until the itinerary is settled. Removing a place from a day list does not mean you must discard it; move it to a backup or “consider later” list instead. That preserves alternatives without crowding the list you use during the day.
Search and filter a large collection
Use the search and filter controls in the saved-places area instead of scrolling through every entry. Android’s help documentation specifically describes filtering, including filtering by a personal note. Notes are useful for details that do not belong in the place name, such as “vegetarian options,” “reserve before 7 p.m.,” or “near the north exit.”
Use notes consistently. A short label such as “rainy-day,” “reservation,” or “near hotel” makes filtering more useful than a long paragraph. Notes are your planning context; they do not replace checking current opening hours, reservation availability, or directions when you are ready to go.
Hide, show, rename, or delete a list
Edit a list when its purpose changes, hide it when it is cluttering the map, or delete it when the trip is over. Hiding affects how the list is displayed; it is not the same as deleting its places. Deleting a list removes that collection, so check that you have not placed the only copy of an important stop there before confirming.
Hiding a backup list during the main itinerary can keep the map readable while preserving the alternatives for later. Show it again if rain, closures, or a change of neighborhood makes the backup useful.
Build a practical trip-planning workflow
- Capture broadly: Save every plausible hotel, attraction, meal, and transport-related stop to a temporary trip list while planning.
- Classify: Add worthwhile places to category, day, or neighborhood lists once you know how you will use them.
- Add context: Use descriptions and personal notes for reservation details, dietary requirements, opening-hour reminders, or why a place made the shortlist.
- Separate certainty levels: Keep confirmed reservations and must-see stops distinct from flexible and backup options.
- Check geography: Open the list on the map and look for clusters. A visually distant stop may deserve a different day even if it looked attractive in a search result.
- Check the calendar: Keep date-specific bookings in the list or note that identifies the intended day, rather than assuming every saved place is available whenever you arrive.
- Prepare for changes: Retain a backup list rather than deleting alternatives. You can hide it during the main day and show it again if plans change.
- Share at the right stage: Give companions a dedicated itinerary list when they need access, instead of exposing an unfinished master collection.
These are planning practices, not additional Google Maps modes. The app supplies the lists and map view; you decide how to name and use them. Revisit the lists after each major booking so the saved places continue to reflect the trip rather than an old set of ideas.

Example structure for a multi-day trip
For a four-day city visit, you might create “Rome – master,” “Day 1 – historic center,” “Day 2 – Vatican area,” “Rome – food,” and “Rome – backup.” Save every candidate to the master list first. After checking distances and reservations, copy selected places into the relevant day and category lists. Keep the backup list hidden until you need a nearby alternative. This arrangement makes both detailed planning and quick on-the-go retrieval easier.

Google states that saved places are private by default: Only you can find your saved places unless you create and share a list of places.
To collaborate, open the list’s sharing controls, create a shareable link, and send that link to the people traveling with you. The owner can adjust who can find the list.
Share the list that contains the trip, not your entire saved-place collection. This keeps personal favorites and unrelated locations private while giving companions the stops they need. If you create a new list specifically for sharing, confirm that all essential locations have been added before sending it.
Let companions edit
Google’s desktop instructions include inviting people to edit a shared list. Use the list’s invitation controls to add collaborators, then turn off editing access later if you want to keep the final itinerary fixed. Review the permission setting before sending the link, because a view-only link and an editor invitation have different effects.
Editing is useful while the group is choosing restaurants or adding meeting points. Once the itinerary is final, switch off editing if you want to prevent accidental changes. Recheck the permission after changing it, especially if you sent the link to several people.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Follow someone else’s list
You can follow another person’s shared list so it is available from your own Maps account. Following does not make you the owner; the original owner controls the list and its permissions. If you later stop following it, that does not transfer ownership or change the original list for other travelers.
What cannot be shared
Google explicitly says starred places cannot be shared. If a location is marked with a star and you want companions to see it, save that location to a shareable list instead. Do not assume that a star, a search history entry, or a private list is visible to the rest of the group.
Lists, saved trips, and offline maps are different
These features solve different problems. Choosing the right one prevents a common planning mistake: assuming that saving a restaurant also saves the route to it or makes it available without a data connection.
| Feature | What it stores | Sharing or connectivity behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Saved place in a list | A location grouped with other places for later reference | Private by default; share the list to let others find it |
| Saved trip | A frequent-route shortcut in the mobile app | Google documents driving, public transport, and two-wheeler trip types |
| Offline map | A downloaded geographic area for use when connectivity is poor | Driving guidance works only when the full route lies inside the downloaded area; no traffic information or alternate routes |
Saved trips
A saved trip is a separate mobile feature for a route you take frequently. It is not a list of restaurants or attractions. Google’s Android instructions are at Save and manage your trips in Google Maps. Google documents driving, public transport, and two-wheeler trip types for this feature. Use it for a recurring route shortcut, not as a substitute for a sightseeing list.

Offline maps
Download the geographic area before leaving reliable connectivity. Google says the complete driving route must fit inside the downloaded area. Offline driving does not provide traffic information or alternate routes, and offline transit, bicycle, and walking directions are unavailable. Offline map downloads may not be available in some countries or regions. Follow the platform-specific instructions in Google’s offline maps guide.
Because an offline map covers an area rather than a list, download every region needed for the drive instead of assuming that each saved place automatically becomes navigable offline. A saved hotel in one city and a day trip in another may require separate downloaded areas. Test the download before departure while you still have a reliable connection.
Saving a place and downloading an offline area can be used together, but they are separate actions. The saved list helps you find the destination; the offline map supplies the geographic data for supported driving guidance.
Limits and sharing decisions
Google Maps Help lists a limit of 3,000 entries for saved lists. That is a product limit, not a recommendation for how many stops to put in one itinerary. For a large or multi-city journey, divide the collection by city, date, or purpose so that the map remains usable and collaborators can find the relevant stops quickly. Splitting lists also makes it easier to hide completed or backup material without affecting the active itinerary.

The Save button is missing
- Confirm that you opened a place card, not only a search suggestion or an unselected map view.
- On a phone, tap the place name or address card after searching or dropping a pin.
- Sign in to the Google Account where you want the list stored.
- Check whether the app has moved the control into a button row or overflow menu after an update.
A saved place is not visible on another device
Make sure both devices use the same Google Account, then open the account’s Saved or You area rather than relying on the map’s current viewport. A place saved to one list will not appear in a different account’s lists unless that list was shared. If you are looking at a filtered view, clear the filter and check the list itself.
Companions cannot edit
Verify that you sent an editor invitation or enabled editing, rather than sending a view-only link. On desktop, reopen the list’s sharing settings to change permissions or turn editing off. If the list is private, recipients will not be able to use it until you share it.
The group cannot see a starred place
Stars are not shareable. Save the same location to a list intended for the group and share that list. Explain this distinction to companions so they do not keep checking a private star marker.
Navigation fails without a connection
Check that you downloaded the entire geographic area covering the driving route. Even with a suitable download, offline driving will not recalculate around traffic or offer alternate routes, and other travel modes do not have offline directions. If the route leaves the downloaded area, the offline map cannot cover the complete drive.

The map looks too cluttered
Hide lists that are not relevant to the current day and keep backup options in their own list. Hiding changes what is displayed; it does not delete the list or its places. Show the list again when you need those alternatives.
A simple final checklist before departure
- Every essential stop is saved to a named list.
- Lists are divided in a way that matches the trip: city, day, category, or backup status.
- Personal notes contain the details you will otherwise forget.
- The correct list has been shared, and companions have the intended view or edit permission.
- Starred places that matter to the group have also been added to a shareable list.
- Any required offline map areas have been downloaded and tested against the full driving route.
- You know which places are flexible, so weather or opening-hour changes do not force a complete rethink.
- The active Google Account is the one you will use during the trip.
- Hidden backup lists can be shown again if the plan changes.
