In Resident Evil 2 Cloud, make a manual save at a typewriter by choosing a save slot. To resume quickly, choose Continue; to pick an earlier slot or the autosave, open Load Game. The Switch version is cloud-streamed, and Capcom says its saves are stored on a server—not as ordinary save files on the console.
These instructions apply to the Nintendo Switch cloud release played on Switch 2. Official product information does not establish a separate native Switch 2 edition or confirm that saves transfer between editions.
Save manually at a typewriter
Resident Evil 2 does not let you create a manual save from anywhere in the map. You must reach a typewriter, interact with it, and use its save screen. Typewriters are therefore both progress markers and planning points: if you have just completed a difficult section, find the next available typewriter before assuming your progress is protected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Reach a typewriter during your current game.
- Interact with it and select an available save slot.
- Confirm the slot to create the save.
Capcom lists 20 manual slot-save files per user for the Nintendo Switch cloud version. A slot is a separate dated save that you can select later through Load Game. The game also has one autosave entry, but that does not remove the need to visit typewriters when you want a deliberate, selectable save.

What to do on Hardcore
Hardcore changes the saving risk. There is no autosave on Hardcore, and saving at a typewriter consumes an Ink Ribbon. Carry ribbons when possible and decide which milestones are worth recording. If you reach a typewriter without a ribbon, you cannot create the usual manual save there until you have one. Because there is no automatic fallback, quitting or dying can return you to an older manual save than players may expect from a standard-difficulty run.
Choose how to load your progress
When you want to resume, the menu gives you two different approaches. The same choices can appear from the main menu or the pause menu, and Continue is also available from a game-over screen.
| Option | What it loads | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Continue | The most recent dated save, including an autosave when one exists. | You want the quickest route back to your latest progress. |
| Load Game | A save you select, including a manual slot or the entry labeled AUTO. | You want a particular earlier slot or want to inspect the available autosave. |
Continue versus Load Game
Use Continue when you simply want the newest available save and do not need to compare dates. It is the convenient choice after closing the game or reaching a game-over screen. Because it selects the latest save automatically, it may not be the slot you intended if you have several saves or if an autosave is newer than your last manual save.
Use Load Game when the exact point matters. The list lets you choose a numbered slot or the AUTO entry. This is the safer option if you deliberately kept an earlier save before a risky decision, want to replay a section, or need to avoid loading a newer point that you no longer want.
Capcom’s detailed save-and-load FAQ documents these menu actions for the Xbox One version. Capcom also says the basic game content is the same across platform versions, while its Nintendo Switch listing separately describes server-stored saves. No Switch 2-specific button sequence is confirmed here, so follow the visible menu labels rather than relying on a particular Joy-Con or Pro Controller prompt.
Understand autosaves and save slots
The Switch cloud release has two kinds of progress entries: up to 20 manual slot saves and one autosave per user. The autosave is separate from the numbered manual slots and appears as AUTO in the Load Game list. When an autosave is the newest entry, Continue can load it.
There is no promise that every action creates an autosave, and Hardcore has no autosave at all. Treat the autosave as a convenience, not as a replacement for a typewriter save. If you need to preserve a specific moment, create a slot save and remember which slot you used.

A practical slot routine
- At a typewriter, choose a slot and confirm the save rather than assuming opening the typewriter is enough.
- Keep more than one slot if you want an earlier fallback; Load Game is the way to select it later.
- After a death or game over, decide whether Continue’s newest entry is the one you want before selecting it.
- On Hardcore, check your Ink Ribbon supply before committing to a long section without another typewriter.
The 20-slot limit is per user. It is not a statement that every Nintendo Switch user profile shares one common list, and it does not mean the title creates 20 autosaves. Capcom’s stated allowance is 20 slot saves plus one autosave for each user.
Where the Switch cloud save is stored—and what backup does not do
Capcom says Resident Evil 2 Cloud stores save data on a server. That wording matters because this is a cloud-streamed release, not a conventional cartridge or download whose save behavior should be assumed from other Switch games. The server-stored game save is the mechanism the title uses while you play; it is not the same service as Nintendo Switch Online’s general Save Data Cloud backup.
Nintendo’s product listing explicitly says that Resident Evil 2 Cloud does not support Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud backup. An NSO membership therefore does not add a backup copy through the Switch HOME Menu, and you should not expect this title to appear as a supported game in that backup workflow.
Why the ordinary HOME Menu steps do not apply
For a compatible title, Nintendo’s generic procedure is to highlight the game on HOME, press + or −, choose Save Data Cloud, select a user, and then choose Back Up Save Data. The equivalent path is System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud. Those instructions are useful for supported games only. They cannot be used to create an NSO backup for Resident Evil 2 Cloud because Nintendo lists this title as unsupported.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not confuse three separate ideas: a manual slot save made at a typewriter, the game’s own autosave entry, and Nintendo’s optional Save Data Cloud backup. The first two are game saves used by Continue or Load Game. The third is a system-level backup feature, and it is unavailable for this title. Also do not promise that a server save transfers to a different edition of Resident Evil 2; the official information does not establish such transfer support.
Connection requirements before playing
Resident Evil 2 Cloud streams the game, so an internet connection is required every time you play. Nintendo UK describes the requirement as a “fast, stable and permanent internet connection.” If the connection becomes unstable, Nintendo warns that the cloud session may disconnect after a few minutes. A save menu cannot compensate for a session that drops before the game records your latest progress.
Connection quality includes more than whether the console can get online. The service depends on the network you actually use, the location where you play, and your internet provider. Capcom cautions that a successful demo test does not guarantee a permanently stable connection, because provider and service conditions can change.

Use the demo as a compatibility check
If you are unsure whether cloud play will work reliably, Capcom recommends trying the free demo before purchasing. The stated allowance is up to five minutes per session, three times. Run those tests on the same network, in the same room, and in the same play mode you expect to use. A clean demo is useful evidence that your connection can reach the service, but it is not a guarantee that every later session will remain stable.
If the stream disconnects, first treat it as a connection or service problem rather than as proof that your save was deleted. Reconnect and check the game’s available entries with Continue or Load Game. Because the release is server-based, avoid making assumptions about a local save file that you can copy or repair from the console.
Switch version facts relevant to saving and loading
- Format: cloud gaming; an internet connection is required.
- Save allowance: 20 manual slot saves plus one autosave per user, according to Capcom.
- Modes and resolution: Capcom lists TV, tabletop, and handheld play at 720p.
- Controllers: Capcom lists Nintendo Switch Pro Controller and Joy-Con support.
- Player count: single-player.
- Nintendo backup: Nintendo lists Save Data Cloud backup as unsupported.
The 720p figure is Capcom’s stated maximum for the listed modes, not an independent measurement of stream quality. Likewise, controller support does not change where you save or how you load; use the on-screen typewriter and menu options.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Looking for a save option anywhere
The most frequent misunderstanding is expecting a Save command in every pause screen. Manual saves require a typewriter. If there is no typewriter nearby, you must continue until you reach one or rely on an available autosave on a difficulty that supports it.
Assuming Continue means “choose a checkpoint”
Continue is a shortcut to the latest save, not a list of checkpoints. Select Load Game when you need a specific slot or the AUTO entry.

Expecting Hardcore to autosave
Hardcore has no autosave, and every typewriter save uses an Ink Ribbon. Plan around both restrictions instead of assuming that a recent encounter will be preserved automatically.
Trying to back up through NSO
The title’s Nintendo listing says Save Data Cloud backup is unsupported. An NSO subscription and the normal HOME Menu backup commands do not change that limitation.

Assuming Switch 2 means a separate native edition
The documented release is Resident Evil 2 Cloud for Nintendo Switch, playable on Switch 2. Official information does not confirm a separate native Switch 2 edition or cross-edition save transfer. Keep your expectations tied to the cloud release you purchased.
A simple session checklist
- Confirm that your internet connection is stable enough for cloud play.
- If you have not purchased yet and are uncertain, use the demo for up to five minutes on each of its three allowed plays.
- When you reach a typewriter, create a manual slot save if you want a dependable selectable point.
- On Hardcore, verify that you have an Ink Ribbon before attempting the save.
- When returning later, choose Continue for the newest entry or Load Game to select a numbered slot or AUTO.
- If you need a backup, remember that Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud is not supported for this title.

No. Nintendo’s product listing says Save Data Cloud backup is unsupported for this title, so the normal HOME Menu backup process and an NSO membership do not provide that backup.
Are the saves stored on my Switch 2?
Capcom says the cloud release stores save data on a server. Do not treat it like an ordinary local save file or assume it can be copied through the console’s Save Data Cloud tools.
Will my cloud save transfer to another Resident Evil 2 edition?
Official information does not confirm transfer between the cloud release, a native edition, or another platform. Do not rely on cross-edition transfer.
What internet connection does Resident Evil 2 Cloud need?
Nintendo UK says a fast, stable and permanent internet connection is required. An unstable connection may disconnect the cloud session after a few minutes.

How can I test my connection before buying?
Capcom recommends trying the free demo if you are unsure. It can be played for up to five minutes, three times. A successful test does not guarantee permanent stability because service quality also depends on the internet provider.
The Bottom Line
Save at a typewriter, using an Ink Ribbon on Hardcore. Choose Continue for the newest save, or Load Game to select a numbered slot or AUTO. Resident Evil 2 Cloud stores saves on a server, requires a stable internet connection, and does not support Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud backup.
