Your Nitrox world is stored in the Nitrox server’s data directory, inside a folder named for the world. The safest backup is a dated copy of that complete folder, made after the server has stopped cleanly. If the server uses --data-path, that argument identifies the absolute directory containing Nitrox logs, cache, and saves.
Before updating Nitrox, copy the world folder somewhere outside the live data directory. To restore a world, stop the server, preserve the current folder as a rollback copy, put the known-good backup back under the expected world name, and verify the world and player data before deleting anything.

Nitrox is a multiplayer modification for Subnautica. Its active saves are managed by the Nitrox server rather than by the ordinary single-player save location. The location that matters is the server data directory currently used by your launcher, service, container, or startup script.
Find the configured --data-path
In Nitrox 1.8.1.0, the --data-path option sets an absolute path for Nitrox logs, cache, and save files. If your server is started with that option, use the path after it as the starting point for every backup and restore operation. For example, a startup entry such as NitroxServer --data-path /srv/nitrox-data makes /srv/nitrox-data the directory to inspect; the exact executable and surrounding options depend on how you installed the server.

Do not assume that a standard Windows, Linux, or container path is universal. Launchers and service managers can pass different arguments, and a container may map a host directory to a different path inside the container. Check the actual launcher shortcut, service definition, Docker or Podman configuration, or startup script.
When no explicit data path is shown
If there is no visible --data-path, inspect the Nitrox configuration directory used by the launcher or service. A community Linux deployment places a world at /home/nitroxuser/.config/Nitrox/saves/My World. That is an example deployment, not a guaranteed default for every host. Your world folder may have a different parent directory, user account, or name.
Search for a directory containing a saves folder and the name you selected when creating the world. Compare its modification time with a recent play session. The directory that changes when the server saves is the one you need; an old installation directory or a client-side Subnautica folder is not necessarily the active server data.
What makes up a world save?
A world is a persistent folder under the Nitrox saves area. Back up the entire named world directory, not only one file that happens to be visible. The folder can contain the world state, player information, inventories, bases, vehicles, progression, and other data required to load the session. Keep the server configuration that accompanies the world as well, especially when it lives in the same Nitrox data directory.
For a containerized server, identify the host-mounted Nitrox configuration or saves volume. A container restart can discard data stored only in the container’s writable layer, while a mounted configuration directory persists it on the host. Back up the mounted host directory that actually contains the world.

How to make a reliable Nitrox backup
A good backup is a complete, dated snapshot made while no process is writing to the world. Follow this sequence for a manual backup, and use the same order when preparing an automated job.

--data-path, or confirm the launcher or service’s Nitrox configuration directory. Note the exact world-folder name, including spaces and capitalization. - Stop the server normally. Use the server’s normal stop command or close it through the launcher. Wait for the server process to exit completely. A clean stop lets pending writes finish.
- Locate the complete world folder. Open the
savesdirectory below the active data path and select the folder for the world you want to protect. Do not copy only a single JSON or other visible file. - Copy the folder to a separate location. Put the copy outside the live Nitrox data directory. A second disk, a backup share, or an off-site destination prevents a failed update or accidental deletion from affecting both copies.
- Use a dated, descriptive name. A pattern such as
WorldName-2026-10-15-before-upgraderecords which world and event the copy represents. Use a date and time when you create several copies in one day. - Verify the copy. Confirm that the destination contains the whole world directory and the expected accompanying files. Compare the folder size and file count with the source, and open the destination’s metadata to ensure the copy completed rather than creating an empty directory.
- Keep the live folder untouched until verification is complete. Do not move, rename, or delete the original while the copy is still running. After verification, restart the server and test the backup during a planned maintenance window if the world is especially valuable.
What to include beyond the world folder
The named world directory is the essential unit for restoring a world. Also retain the server configuration and any launcher or service settings needed to point Nitrox at the same data path. Without those settings, a perfectly good world copy can appear to be missing simply because the server starts against a different directory.
How many copies should you keep?
Keep at least one copy outside the live Nitrox directory. For stronger protection, retain several dated versions and one copy independent of the server host. Separate copies help when the newest snapshot was made after corruption, an operator deleted the wrong folder, or a host disk failed. The Nitrox project has previously fixed an incomplete world-backup problem and a server-restart save-wipe problem; those fixes are reasons to maintain independent backups rather than relying on the live folder alone.
Manual, scheduled, and off-site backup methods
Choose a method according to how often the server changes and how quickly you must recover. The evidence for Nitrox establishes the need for a separate copy, but it does not require a particular storage provider.

For a small private server, a manual copy before each update may be enough. A server used daily benefits from scheduled snapshots plus an off-site copy. Whichever method you choose, make sure it preserves the complete folder hierarchy instead of flattening files into a single directory.

Scheduling without capturing half-written files
An automated job should run only after the server has stopped or reached a documented safe-save state. The simplest reliable design is a maintenance script that stops the service, waits for the process to exit, copies the world directory, verifies the destination, and starts the service again. If your hosting platform cannot stop the process safely, schedule a maintenance window and perform the copy manually instead of silently taking inconsistent snapshots.
Keep retention rules explicit. For example, retain several recent daily copies and additional copies made immediately before upgrades. Do not let an automatic cleanup task remove every older version when a new snapshot is created.
How to restore a Nitrox world backup
Restoration is safest when you preserve the current state before replacing it. The procedure below works for a normal folder-based installation and can be adapted to a host-mounted container volume.
- Stop Nitrox. Close the launcher’s server process or use the service’s normal stop command. Wait until the process has exited.
- Confirm the data path. Recheck the configured
--data-pathand the selected world. Restoring into an unused installation directory will not change what the server loads. - Preserve the current world. Rename the live world folder, for example to
My World-current-before-restore. This rollback copy is valuable if the selected backup is older than expected or also damaged. - Place the backup in the saves directory. Copy the known-good world folder beneath the active
savesdirectory. Use the exact world-folder name the server expects; do not add a second nested copy such assaves/My World/My World. - Check permissions and ownership. The account running Nitrox must be able to read and write the restored folder. A backup copied by an administrator account can otherwise load as inaccessible to a restricted service account.
- Start the server and test the world. Join the restored world and check more than the loading screen: inspect player inventories, bases, vehicles, discovered areas, and progression. These checks reveal a partial or wrong-world restore.
- Keep the rollback folder until validation is complete. Delete it only after players confirm that the restored world is correct and stable.
Nitrox 1.8.0.0 added launcher management for multiple servers and restoring world backups. If your launcher exposes a restore action, use it only after identifying the correct backup and preserving the current world. The folder-level precautions still matter because a launcher selection cannot recover a copy that was never made.
Restoring after apparent corruption
Do not repeatedly launch a suspected corrupt world while experimenting; each launch can change files and make comparison harder. Stop the server, preserve the damaged folder with a name such as WorldName-corrupt-2026-10-15, and restore the most recent known-good copy. If that copy fails, try an older dated version. Record which copy loaded successfully so you do not overwrite it during later troubleshooting.

Will a Nitrox save survive a server update?
Compatibility is version-specific. Nitrox 1.8.1.0 release notes explicitly state that its save files are compatible with 1.8.0.1 and 1.8.0.0. That statement does not guarantee compatibility with every other release, future version, or unlisted combination.
Upgrade checklist
- Write down the current Nitrox version and the version you plan to install.
- Stop the server and make a dated copy of the complete world folder.
- Keep the old copy outside the live data directory and retain the old server package long enough to roll back if needed.
- Read the release notes for the exact source and target versions instead of inferring compatibility from a similar version number.
- Install or launch the new version against the intended data path.
- Load the world and verify inventories, bases, vehicles, and progression before removing the rollback copy.
If the release notes do not state compatibility for your exact version pair, treat the upgrade as potentially requiring a rollback plan. Do not convert or rewrite the only copy of the world while testing.

Serializer changes
The 1.8.0.0 release history documents JSON as a save format and a /swapserializer [serializer] command. A serializer change can alter how data is written. Never test a serializer command on your only backup. Keep an untouched copy, make a separate working copy for experiments, and note which serializer was active when each backup was created.
Troubleshooting common save and backup problems
“I cannot find my Nitrox save.”
- Check the server startup arguments for
--data-path; that path overrides assumptions about the default location. - Confirm that you are inspecting the server host, not only the computer running the game client.
- If the server runs in a container, inspect the host-mounted configuration or saves volume.
- Look for a
savesdirectory and a folder matching the world name. Compare modification times with the last session. - Verify that the launcher or service is starting the same installation you used previously.
“My backup contains only a few files.”
First check whether you copied a single file instead of the complete named world folder. Then confirm that the server was stopped before copying. A copy made while files were being written can be incomplete. Keep the partial copy for diagnosis, but create a new snapshot after a clean stop.
“The server starts a new world after I restore.”
- Check the restored folder’s exact name and location under the active
savesdirectory. - Look for an accidental extra nesting level.
- Confirm the launcher selected the intended server and world.
- Recheck
--data-path; a different path makes the restored folder invisible to the running process. - Verify file permissions for the account that runs Nitrox.
“The world loads, but progress is missing.”
You may have restored an older dated snapshot or copied only part of the world. Stop the server, preserve the current restored folder, and compare it with the backup that contains the expected player and world data. Restore the complete folder from that backup rather than merging individual files unless the project’s documentation for your exact version instructs otherwise.

“The update broke my save.”
Stop the new server and do not delete the pre-upgrade copy. Check whether the release notes explicitly cover your source and target versions. If they do not, roll back the server version and restore the untouched pre-upgrade world copy. Test the old version with that copy before attempting another upgrade.

Determine whether the world was stored only in the container’s writable layer. Reconfigure the deployment so the Nitrox configuration or saves directory is mounted from the host, then restore the latest off-container backup into that mounted path. A mount protects data across container replacement; it does not replace a separate backup.
A practical maintenance routine
For a server that several people use, make backup responsibilities explicit:
- Before every Nitrox update: stop the server, create a dated complete-world copy, and record the source and target versions.
- After major building sessions: create an additional snapshot if losing the session would be costly.
- Each week: move at least one verified copy away from the server host.
- After an incident: preserve the damaged folder before attempting restoration, and label every copy with its date and purpose.
- During recovery: test the restored world with the same Nitrox version that created the backup whenever possible.
This routine separates the live save from the recovery copies, gives you a known point to return to, and makes version-related decisions traceable.
