Save the post while you can still view it. The most dependable method is to take a screenshot, keep an uncropped original, and then export a copy as PNG or JPEG. You can also create a PDF from the screenshot or, on a desktop browser, use Save Image As when Instagram exposes the underlying image. If an account has already been memorialized, Meta says no one can log in, so later recovery depends on your existing viewing access or permission arranged before memorialization.
What changes when an Instagram account is memorialized
Meta’s memorial-account guidance says a memorialized profile displays “Remembering,” cannot be logged into, and keeps the person’s shared photos and posts visible to the audience selected when they were posted. See Meta’s memorial-account guidance. In practice, that means a relative generally cannot sign in later to download an original file.
The University of Manitoba’s Digital Death Directory notes that a legacy contact may download shared content only when that permission was granted in advance. A death certificate should not be treated as a guaranteed way to unlock a download. If you can still open the post, preserve it now and make more than one backup.

Open the profile and the specific post from the account you normally use. A memorialized post is not automatically public: it remains visible to the audience chosen when it was shared. If you can see it, you can preserve what is visible on your screen, but that does not give you access to hidden posts, private comments or the account’s original upload.

Decide whether you need a clean photograph, a documentary copy, or both. A clean crop is useful for a frame, while an uncropped capture records the username, date, caption placement and Instagram context. Keep both versions. If another family member is doing the capture, ask for the original file rather than a compressed copy sent through a messaging app, and do not ask for their Instagram password.
Make a simple folder before saving, such as Memorial-Post-2026-10-15. Record the post URL, the capture date and who supplied permission. Those notes help relatives understand what the file is without requiring anyone to log in again.

Keep the original screenshot or downloaded image even if you make a PDF. A PDF is a container for the image and can introduce white margins or recompression.

For a condolence card or framed print, a duplicate crop looks cleaner. For a packet containing several slides, a multi-page PDF keeps the pages together, but the separate image files remain easier to reuse later.
No method can restore a post that your account cannot view. Screenshot availability depends on the post still being visible; a browser download depends on Instagram exposing an image file; and PDF export depends on the phone or computer offering a PDF destination. Saving both an image and a PDF covers those different uses without sacrificing the archival master.
Save the memorial post as an image on iPhone or Android
- Open Instagram and navigate to the memorial post while it is visible to you. Let the image finish loading.
- Take a screenshot. On iPhone, press the Side button and Volume Up together. On Android, press Power and Volume Down; button behavior varies by manufacturer and model.
- Open the result in Photos (iPhone) or Gallery/Photos (Android).
- Save an uncropped copy first. This preserves the username, date, caption context and the fact that the image came from Instagram.
- Make a second, cropped copy if you want a cleaner picture. Do not overwrite the uncropped file.
- Export or share the image as PNG or JPEG, then copy it to a second secure location such as an encrypted drive or trusted cloud storage.

Use descriptive names instead of accepting a generic filename. For example, name files memorial-post-uncropped.png and memorial-post-crop.jpg. If the device saves screenshots in a common album, copy them into the memorial folder so they are not lost among unrelated captures. Open each exported file once to confirm that it is not blank or clipped before deleting anything from the phone.

Capture a long caption or carousel
If the post includes a caption, comments or several carousel images, take separate screenshots for each part. A single screen capture cannot preserve content that is below the fold. Swipe through every carousel image and save each one, keeping the order in the filenames (for example, post-01.png, post-02.png). Avoid scrolling while the screenshot animation is occurring, or text and images may be cut off.

For a long caption, capture the opening view with the account name and date, then take additional captures as you scroll through the text. Keep the sequence together and do not rely on a cropped image to prove which caption belonged to which picture. If comments matter, capture only the comments you are authorized to preserve and check every frame for other people’s personal details.
Turn the post or screenshot into a PDF
- Open the post or the saved screenshot.
- Open the device’s Share menu and choose Print, if available.
- In the print preview, select Save as PDF or the equivalent PDF destination. Menu names differ by phone, operating-system version and app.
- Check the preview for clipped edges, an unexpectedly tiny image or large blank margins.
- Choose Files, Downloads or another secure destination, name the file clearly, and save it.
Some Instagram and phone combinations do not offer a PDF destination directly. In that case, save the screenshot first, open it from Files or Photos, and use the phone’s print workflow. You can also transfer the image to a computer and choose Print in the desktop dialog, then select a PDF printer.
Retain the PNG or JPEG alongside the PDF. The image is easier to reuse for a photo print, while the PDF is convenient for an email attachment or multi-page keepsake.
Before confirming the PDF, inspect every page at full size. A print preview can rotate a portrait screenshot, place it on a landscape page, or add margins that were not visible in Instagram. If the preview cuts off a caption or a face, cancel, adjust orientation or scaling, and preview again. The PDF should be treated as a distribution copy; keep the first image capture as the master.
When combining carousel captures into one PDF, add them in the same order in which they appear on Instagram. A clear filename such as memorial-post-pages.pdf distinguishes the assembled document from the individual source files. If the document is sent by email, tell recipients not to edit or recompress the original image unless they are making a separate copy.
Use a desktop browser when you need a larger copy
- Sign in to Instagram in a browser if the post requires an account, then open the memorial post at the largest practical window size.
- Right-click the image. If the browser offers Save Image As, choose it and save the file in the original format offered.
- If no image command appears, or the saved file is a placeholder, take a browser screenshot instead.
- Open the screenshot in the operating system’s image viewer and use its print dialog to create a PDF.
- Save the post URL in a text file next to the image so future viewers know where the copy came from.
Instagram may load the picture through a viewer that does not expose the underlying file. In that case, repeated right-click attempts will not help; use a screenshot and preserve the visible context.
A desktop view can make captions and dates easier to read, but enlarging the browser window does not create detail that Instagram did not deliver. Compare the downloaded file with the visible post before discarding the screenshot. Keep the browser URL, capture date and any account-access notes in the same folder.

If the account is already memorialized
- You can still see the post: take a screenshot immediately and export it as described above.
- You cannot see the post: ask another authorized viewer to preserve it and send you the original file, without asking them to share login credentials.
- A legacy-contact download permission existed: use the process associated with that permission; it had to be established before memorialization.
- You are considering a memorialization request: preserve the posts you are permitted to access before submitting it, because login access ends once the account is memorialized.
Do not attempt password guessing, impersonation or unofficial download services. Those actions can violate privacy, platform rules and the family’s wishes.
If a viewer sends only a screenshot through a chat app, ask whether an uncropped original still exists. Messaging services can resize or recompress images, and a second-generation copy may be less useful for printing. Have the authorized viewer place the original image, PDF and URL in a shared folder with access limited to the people who need it.
Printing and making a physical keepsake
For a home print, open the saved image or PDF, choose the paper size, and check the preview so faces and captions are not clipped. For a photo-printing service, upload the uncropped original when context matters and a cropped copy when you want a clean photograph. A portable photo printer is another option for a small keepsake; verify that its paper size and phone connection work with your device before buying.
Print one test page before ordering multiple copies. Screenshots are designed for screens, so a large print may reveal softness or interface elements that were not obvious on a phone.
Decide whether the print is meant to show the Instagram post or only the photograph. If it is a remembrance display, retaining the username and date may be meaningful. If it is a standalone portrait, use the duplicate crop and keep the documentary version in the archive. For a service such as Snapfish or another photo printer, review the crop tool carefully so the service does not trim captions or faces automatically.
Privacy, consent and copyright
A screenshot preserves a copy for remembrance; it does not transfer copyright or permission to repost. Ask the photographer or rights holder before public reuse or commercial printing. Before sending a file to a printer or relatives, inspect the full uncropped capture for private comments, direct messages, phone numbers, locations and other people’s personal information. Crop or redact those details only in a duplicate, keeping the original secured.

Do not publish a memorial screenshot merely because you can view it. The selected Instagram audience may have been limited, and other people shown in the image may not have agreed to wider distribution. Share the smallest version needed for the purpose, use a private transfer channel, and tell recipients not to repost it without permission.

The screenshot is black, blank or missing the image
Wait for the post to finish loading, disable any temporary screen overlay, and try again with Instagram in the foreground. If the image remains unavailable, check whether the post is visible from the account you are using; memorialization does not make content public to everyone.

The PDF option is not in Share or Print
Save the screenshot as an image first, then open that file from Files or a computer and use the system print dialog’s PDF destination. The label and location vary by device.
The PDF has huge margins or a cut-off edge
Return to print preview, choose the correct paper orientation and scaling option, and verify the whole image before saving. Keep the image file as the archival master.
Save Image As downloads a tiny file or a placeholder
Instagram may be serving a viewer rather than a direct image. Cancel the download and use a screenshot, or open the image in a separate browser tab only if Instagram provides that option.
The memorial profile cannot be opened
Ask an existing audience member or authorized family representative to check. Meta’s guidance does not provide a general login route after memorialization, and a death certificate alone should not be assumed to create download rights.

- Save an uncropped screenshot with username and date.
- Save each carousel image and any caption pages separately.
- Export a PDF only after checking its print preview.
- Keep both the original image and PDF in two secure locations.

Open the post or screenshot, choose Share, select Print, and choose Save as PDF if your device offers it. If that option is missing, save the image first and use the Files or computer print dialog to create the PDF.
Will a screenshot preserve the original Instagram quality?
It preserves what your display shows, so quality depends on the device and screen size. A desktop Save Image As download may be better when Instagram exposes the underlying image, but keep the screenshot because it documents the post’s context.
Can I print a screenshot of a memorial post?
