Save a WhatsApp Status video while it is still visible. On Android, view the Status first, then copy its cached video from Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/.Statuses with a file manager. On an iPhone, use the built-in Screen Recording control while the Status plays and trim the result in Photos. You can also view the Status in WhatsApp Web and try the browser’s save command. These methods differ: Android may give you the cached media file, while iPhone recording preserves only what played on the screen. WhatsApp Status items disappear from view after 24 hours, so start before that window closes.
What happens when a WhatsApp Status expires?
WhatsApp describes Status as a place to share photos and videos that disappear from view after 24 hours. Once the item is no longer available in the Status viewer, the practical ways described here can no longer capture that playback. If you need a video, open the Status and save or record it before the 24-hour period ends.
A Status is not automatically the same file the person uploaded. WhatsApp says uploaded Status media quality may be lower than the original version. A copy made from the Status can therefore look softer, have a smaller resolution, or contain the effects of playback. Screen recording adds another generation of processing because it records the displayed image rather than retrieving the source file.
The person who posted the Status controls its audience. Being able to view a video does not by itself grant permission to repost it, send it to other people, or use it commercially. Keep a copy only for a legitimate reason and ask the poster before sharing it outside the intended audience.

Choose the method that fits your device

Use the Android route when you want to try to retain the cached media rather than recording the screen. Use iPhone recording when you need a built-in method that does not depend on a hidden folder. The computer route is useful when a larger display or desktop file handling is more convenient, but its behavior is less predictable.
Save a WhatsApp Status video on Android
An independent tutorial reports that a viewed Status video is placed in WhatsApp’s local media cache. You can copy that file with the phone’s file manager. This is not a WhatsApp-endorsed export workflow, and Android’s storage rules differ between devices. Perform the steps while the Status is still visible.
1. View the Status completely enough to load it
- Open WhatsApp and open the Status tab or Status viewer.
- Tap the contact’s video and let it play. The tutorial specifically says the video must be viewed first for it to appear in the cache.
- Return to the phone’s home screen after the video has loaded. Do not clear WhatsApp’s recent data before copying the file.
Viewing first matters because the file manager may show no matching video until WhatsApp has downloaded the Status for playback. If several Status videos were viewed, use their thumbnails, timestamps, or file sizes to identify the one you need.

2. Open the Android file manager
- Open the phone’s built-in file manager. It may be called Files, File Manager, or have a manufacturer-specific name.
- Choose internal storage, then follow this folder path:
Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/.Statuses. - If your file manager separates the first level, the same route can appear as
Internal storage/Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/.Statuses.
The leading period in .Statuses marks the folder as hidden in many file managers. Look for a setting such as Show hidden files or Display hidden items and enable it temporarily if your file manager provides one. The exact path or the ability to browse it can vary by Android release and manufacturer, so do not assume that a missing folder means the video was never loaded.
3. Copy the video to a normal folder
- In
.Statuses, locate the video you just viewed. - Long-press the file and choose Copy. Avoid Move if you want WhatsApp to retain its own cached copy until you have confirmed yours works.
- Navigate to a regular folder such as Movies, Videos, or a folder you create for saved Status clips.
- Choose Paste, then open the copied file from that destination to confirm that it plays.
Copying to a normal folder protects the file from being overlooked when WhatsApp refreshes its temporary media. Rename it only after the copy succeeds, and use a name that identifies the contact or date without exposing private information unnecessarily.

If the Android folder is empty
- Return to WhatsApp and view the Status again, then refresh the file manager.
- Confirm that you are in internal storage and not an SD-card location or a similarly named application folder.
- Turn on hidden-file display and check the spelling, including the leading period in
.Statuses. - Search the file manager for recently modified video files if its search function supports that operation.
- Try the process promptly; a Status that has expired may no longer be available for WhatsApp to cache.
If the folder remains inaccessible, your Android version or file manager may restrict access to that location. Do not install a saver app solely to bypass a storage restriction without checking what permissions it requests and where it sends media.
Save a WhatsApp Status video on iPhone
The iPhone method described for this task uses Apple’s built-in screen recorder. It records the Status while it plays; it does not promise a download of the original WhatsApp file. The final clip may include the screen’s dimensions, playback overlays, or other visible elements until you trim them.
1. Put Screen Recording in easy reach
- Open Control Center and check whether Screen Recording is already available.
- If it is not present, use the iPhone’s Control Center customization settings to add the Screen Recording control. The exact arrangement can differ by iOS version.
- Return to WhatsApp and open the Status video, but do not start playback until you are ready to record.
2. Record the Status playback
- Open Control Center and tap the Screen Recording control.
- Dismiss Control Center and immediately play the Status video from the beginning.
- Let the video finish. Stop recording with the red recording indicator or from Control Center.
Start the recording before the video begins so the opening frames are not missing. Keep notifications and other apps from appearing on screen during the capture when possible; anything visible during playback can become part of the recording.
3. Trim and verify the recording
- Open Photos and select the new screen recording.
- Tap Edit and drag the start and end handles to remove Control Center footage, excess waiting time, or the end screen.
- Save the edited video, then play it from Photos to verify that the full Status is present and that the audio is acceptable.
Trimming changes the boundaries of the recording, not the underlying source quality. A screen recording can look different from the Status itself because it captures the iPhone display, and the Status may already have been reduced from the uploader’s original quality.
Try the WhatsApp Web workaround on a computer
A secondary tutorial reports that you can use WhatsApp Web to view a Status and then save it through the browser. Treat this as a workaround rather than a guaranteed download button: WhatsApp Web behavior, browser menus, and available controls can change.

- Open WhatsApp Web in a desktop browser.
- On your phone, open WhatsApp’s Linked devices screen, choose the option to link a device, and scan the QR code shown in the browser.
- After the session loads, open the Status area and play the video you want to keep.
- Use the browser’s available save or download command only if the video is exposed as a downloadable media item. If the browser presents only playback, do not assume that saving the page will save the video.
- Open the saved file on the computer and check that it plays before closing the linked session.
This route can be convenient for moving a file directly to a computer, but it does not guarantee the original upload, an uncompressed copy, or a control that appears on every account. If the Status is close to its 24-hour expiry, use the phone-based method instead of spending time troubleshooting the browser.

A saved Status may already be lower quality
WhatsApp states that Status uploads may be lower quality than the original media. Copying a cached file does not restore detail that was removed when the Status was processed. If the poster still has the original video and you need its full resolution, requesting that original file is the reliable route.
Screen recording is a playback capture
On iPhone, the output contains exactly what the display rendered during recording. It can include a different aspect ratio, status-bar elements, playback pauses, or notification banners. Trimming removes unwanted beginning and ending footage, but it cannot recreate frames that were skipped or hidden.
Check audio and the complete duration
Before deleting anything, play the saved clip from start to finish. Confirm that the opening and closing seconds are present, the audio is audible, and the file is stored outside any temporary WhatsApp folder. A file that opens in a gallery but stops partway through should be copied again while the Status remains available.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The Status disappeared before you saved it
WhatsApp’s stated Status lifetime is 24 hours. If the item is no longer visible, the methods above have no playback to capture. Ask the person who posted it to send you the video directly if you have a legitimate reason to keep it.
The Android file manager cannot see Android/media
Storage access is controlled by the Android version and the file-manager app. Check for an in-app permission prompt, enable hidden files, and verify that you are browsing internal storage. If the manufacturer’s file manager still blocks the route, avoid granting broad storage access to an unfamiliar third-party app merely to obtain one Status video.

The copied Android file has an unclear name
Cached Status files may not use a recognizable contact name. Compare modification time, duration, thumbnail, and file size with the video you viewed. Copy candidate files to a normal folder and open them before renaming or deleting any others.
The iPhone recording contains Control Center
Open the clip in Photos, choose Edit, and trim the beginning and end. If Control Center opened over the middle of playback, record the Status again; trimming cannot remove an overlay that covers the video’s central frames.
The recording has no sound
Play the Status on the phone before recording and check whether its audio is audible. Start a fresh Screen Recording and test the result immediately. If the Status itself is silent, a recording cannot add audio that was not played.

WhatsApp Web does not show a save command
Use the browser only when it exposes the media as a file. If it shows a player without a save option, return to the Android or iPhone method rather than installing an extension that requests access to all browsing data or WhatsApp content.

- Remember that the poster selected an audience for the Status. Keep the saved copy private unless the poster agrees to further distribution.
- Store the file in a folder protected by your device’s normal lock and backup controls, especially if the video contains people, children, locations, or private conversations.
- Review the permissions of any file manager or utility you install. A tool that can read all photos, videos, or notifications has access beyond this one Status.
- Do not upload someone else’s Status to a public site simply because you were able to copy it.
- Delete the saved copy when you no longer need it, and check cloud-photo backups if you intended the deletion to be complete.
Do not confuse a Status with View Once media
View Once is a separate WhatsApp feature for photos, voice messages, and videos sent or received in a chat. WhatsApp’s View Once guidance says recipients cannot forward, copy, save, star, or share that media. The Status procedures in this article are not instructions for bypassing View Once protections, and you should not try to capture or redistribute View Once content.

An ordinary Status is governed by its audience settings and 24-hour visibility period. View Once chat media is governed by its one-time viewing restriction. Check which feature you are looking at before taking any action.
Is there an official download button for every Status?
WhatsApp’s official help information establishes the 24-hour Status expiry, the audience controls, and the separate View Once restrictions. It does not establish one universal download control that appears on every current phone, account, or app version. Some versions or contexts may expose different controls, so inspect the options in your own app rather than relying on a blanket claim that a button always exists or never exists.

The practical choices are therefore device-specific: copy the viewed cache on Android when the folder is accessible, record playback on iPhone, or try the browser workaround on a linked computer. None of these choices should be described as a guaranteed recovery of the uploader’s untouched original file.
Last-minute checklist before the 24-hour window closes
- Open the Status and confirm that the video still plays.
- On Android, view it first, open
Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/.Statuses, reveal hidden files if needed, and copy the video to a normal folder. - On iPhone, start Screen Recording, play the complete Status, stop recording, and trim the result in Photos.
- If using a computer, link WhatsApp Web, play the Status, and save only when the browser exposes an actual media file.
- Play the saved copy from beginning to end and check its audio, duration, and storage location.
- Ask the poster before reposting or forwarding the video.
The safest expectation is that you are preserving access to a Status playback, not recovering an untouched master video. Act before expiry, verify the file immediately, and respect the person who created and shared it.
