You can save a still from a video without taking a screenshot: use the frame-export option in the video app. On iPhone, Apple Photos calls it Save Video Frame as Photo. On Android, Google Photos offers Export frame where supported. Some phone Gallery apps also have a capture-frame control.
Save a frame on iPhone with Apple Photos

Open the video in the Photos app and play it.

Pause when the frame you want is on screen.

Tap More (the three-dot menu), then choose Save Video Frame as Photo.

Look for the new image in your photo library. Apple says it appears at the bottom when the library is sorted by Added, or beside the original video when sorted by Captured.

Apple Support describes the feature simply: “You can save a frame from a video as a photo.” Apple’s iPhone user guide has the steps.

Export a frame on Android with Google Photos

Open the video in Google Photos.

Tap Edit if needed, move the scrubber to the frame you want, then tap Export frame.
Google Photos Help documents the Export frame option. Its location can vary with the app interface. A Google Product Expert/community support answer suggests tapping the timestamp or frame area in the editor if the control is not immediately visible; treat that as a troubleshooting hint rather than a guaranteed path. Google also notes that non-Pixel Android devices running Android 9 do not support or have access to video editing.

Check your phone’s Gallery app
Some manufacturers include a frame-capture command in their Gallery app. For example, a Galaxy S20 FE manual copy describes playing a video in Gallery and tapping the frame-capture control to save a high-resolution photo. This is model-specific guidance, not a universal Samsung Gallery feature. If you do not see the control, try Google Photos if available or check the manual for your device.
Frame export or screenshot?
A dedicated export command saves the chosen video frame as a photo. A screenshot is an alternative when the app has no export control, but the instructions above concern the built-in frame-saving features. The available support documentation does not establish a quality or resolution comparison among Apple Photos, Google Photos, and manufacturer Gallery tools.
