The dependable method is to open the public timeline, use your browser’s Print dialog to choose Save as PDF (or Microsoft Print to PDF), then reopen the file and test a name, date, and copy-and-paste. If the file contains only a picture of the page, run OCR and test it again. A searchable PDF has a selectable text layer; a screenshot or unprocessed scan does not.
What you need before saving
- The public timeline URL and the specific view containing the entries you need.
- A current desktop browser with a system or browser PDF printer.
- A PDF viewer that can find and select text.
- If the source is a scan or image-only page, OCR software (or Chrome’s on-device OCR conversion for a scanned PDF).
Decide whether the timeline is a single page or a set of linked pages. Browser printing is normally sufficient for one public HTML page. A multi-level converter is more appropriate when entries are distributed across linked pages.
Save one timeline page with your browser
1. Open the correct public view
Load the timeline and set any date range, category, or relationship filter before printing. Expand sections that are collapsed and scroll through the page once. This gives scripts and lazy-loaded entries a chance to render. Do not print until the names, dates, and events you need are visible in the page itself.

2. Open the print dialog
Use your browser’s Print command. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau notes that a web browser can likely “print” a page to a PDF.

- macOS: open the PDF menu in the print dialog and choose Save as PDF.
Use the preview to check that headings, dates, and all required entries appear. If a preview omits content, return to the page, expand the missing section, disable an obstructive overlay, or try the browser’s reader/print layout when available.
3. Choose practical print settings
- Use portrait or landscape orientation that keeps the timeline columns readable.
- Keep background graphics enabled only when they carry meaning; decorative backgrounds make files larger.
- For a long page, use all pages unless you have confirmed a narrower page range contains every required entry.
- Leave scale at the default first. Reduce it only if columns are clipped in the preview.
4. Save with a traceable name
Use a descriptive filename such as relationship-timeline-2026-10-15.pdf. Keep the original public URL in your notes or in the PDF’s metadata so another reader can trace the capture to its source. A filename that includes the subject and capture date is easier to distinguish from later revisions.
Confirm that the PDF is actually searchable
Do not assume that a file ending in .pdf contains text. Perform these checks immediately after saving:
- Close and reopen the saved PDF in your viewer.
- Use Find (usually
Ctrl+Fon Windows orCmd+Fon macOS) for a distinctive person’s name. - Search for a date and for a distinctive event phrase, not just a common word.
- Drag across a short passage and copy it into a plain-text editor.
- Compare the copied characters with the page, paying attention to punctuation, dates, and similarly shaped letters.
A successful search and clean copy indicate that the PDF has a text layer. If Find returns nothing and text cannot be selected, the file is image-only and needs OCR.

Make an image-only timeline searchable with OCR
When OCR is required
OCR is needed for a scanned paper timeline, a PDF made from page images, or a web page whose print output contains screenshots rather than HTML text. Digital.gov advises running scanned PDFs through optical character recognition to convert an image to searchable text. GOV.UK likewise warns that a scan saved as PDF/A without OCR cannot be searched or read by a screen reader.
Run OCR and validate the result
- Open the image-only PDF in an OCR-capable application.
- Choose the document language and process every page, not just the page currently visible.
- Export as a searchable PDF while retaining the original page image as the visual layer when the tool offers that option.
- Reopen the output and repeat the name, date, Find, and copy tests.
- Inspect names, initials, date separators, and relationship terms manually. Correct obvious recognition errors before relying on the text for research or indexing.
Chrome Help explains that scanned PDFs opened in Chrome can be converted with OCR on the device so text can be highlighted, searched, copied, pasted, and found. Treat that conversion as a convenience, not as proof that every character was recognized correctly; validation remains necessary.
Preserve metadata and accessibility
When your PDF tool supports document properties, add a descriptive title, subject or description, keywords, language, and the original URL. Digital.gov recommends these fields because they help people and search systems identify a file. Metadata does not replace a text layer: a PDF can have a title and keywords while its pages remain unsearchable images.

When a dedicated web-to-PDF converter is useful
For one public timeline page, browser Save as PDF is usually the shortest path. A dedicated converter becomes useful when the timeline spans linked pages or needs repeatable, bounded capture.

For any converter, inspect the first and last expected entries, count the generated pages, and run the same Find and copy tests. Do not assume that a multi-page capture includes content hidden behind an interactive filter or a login wall.
Troubleshooting missing or unsearchable content
The print preview is missing entries
- Return to the timeline and expand every collapsed section.
- Scroll through the page so lazy-loaded entries render before invoking Print.
- Clear a date or category filter if it is unintentionally restricting the view, then print again.
- Check whether the missing entries are on linked pages; browser printing captures the page you opened, not an entire site hierarchy.
A cookie, newsletter, or chat overlay covers the timeline
Dismiss the overlay before printing. If it reappears, reload, complete the consent choice, or use the browser’s reader/print layout. Confirm in the preview that the underlying names and dates are visible.

It is probably image-only. Run OCR on every page, export a searchable PDF, and repeat the tests. If OCR still fails, verify that the document language is correct and that the source image has enough contrast and resolution for recognition.

Search works, but names or dates are wrong
OCR can confuse characters such as “1” and “I,” merge columns, or misread punctuation. Compare each critical name and date with the visual page and correct the text layer in an editor that supports OCR correction. Keep the original image-based file so corrections can be audited.
The layout is clipped or unreadable
Change orientation, reduce scale slightly, or print the relevant page range separately. Use the preview rather than relying on the viewer after export; clipping visible in preview will remain in the PDF.
The file is unexpectedly large
Large background images and high-resolution scans increase size. Turn off decorative backgrounds where they do not convey information, and use an OCR workflow that keeps a sensible image resolution. Do not downsample so aggressively that small dates become illegible.
A multi-level capture stops early
Check the converter’s same-path or same-server boundary, the allowed page depth, and whether the site requires a login. Compare the output page count with the number of linked timeline pages you expected; implementation-specific scripts and access controls can prevent complete capture.

Performance, reliability, and record-keeping
- Render first: wait for the timeline to finish loading and inspect the final view before printing or submitting a URL to a converter.
- Use repeatable names: include the subject and capture date, and record the source URL separately.
- Keep originals: retain the first PDF and any pre-OCR image file when names or dates matter, then store the corrected searchable copy alongside them.
- Verify every run: search one person, one date, and one event phrase after each save, OCR pass, or conversion.
- Plan for changes: a public page can be edited after capture. The URL, filename date, and PDF metadata establish when your copy was made, while the saved HTML version can preserve an accessible alternative.
