To save a dropped pin in Google Maps, select the location, open its name or address card, tap or click Save, and choose a list. On Android and iPhone/iPad, open You later to find the list; on a computer, open Saved. Sign in to keep saved places available on your other devices.
What saving a dropped pin actually does
Saving a pin adds the selected location to a Google Maps list. The list can be an existing one or a new list you create during the save process. This is useful for an address, meeting point, trailhead, viewpoint, parking area, or another map location you want to retrieve without searching for it again.
A saved pin is not an offline map download. The save feature stores the place in a list; it does not, by itself, download map data or make navigation work without an internet connection. Download an offline map separately if offline navigation is your goal.

How to save a dropped pin on Android
- Open the Google Maps app.
- Find the location. You can search for a place, or tap the desired location on the map.
- Tap the location’s name or address in the card at the bottom of the screen. This opens the place details.
- Tap Save.
- Select an existing list, or choose the option to create a new list and give it a name.
After the list selection is complete, the location is stored in that list under the Google account you are using. To retrieve it, open Google Maps, tap You, and open the list containing the pin.
The Android help flow identifies selecting a location and using the card’s Save action. It does not require attributing a particular long-press gesture to the save process; use the map selection or search result that displays the location card.
How to save a dropped pin on an iPhone or iPad
- Open Google Maps on the iPhone or iPad.
- Search for the place, or tap the location on the map.
- Tap the place’s name or address in the bottom card.
- Tap Save.
- Choose an existing list, or create a new list for the location.
To open the saved pin later, tap You and select the list where you placed it. The same save-and-list flow applies whether the location came from a search result or from selecting it directly on the map.

How to save a dropped pin on a computer
- Open Google Maps in a desktop browser and sign in to the account where you want the pin stored.
- Locate the point by searching for a place, entering coordinates, or clicking a place on the map.
- Open the selected place’s details if necessary, then click Save.
- Choose an existing list or create a new list.
When you return to the computer version, click Saved to see your lists and open the saved location. If you used coordinates for a point that does not have a conventional business or street name, keep the list name descriptive so you can identify it later.

How to create the right list for a saved pin
Use an existing list
Choose an existing list when the pin belongs with places you already organize together. For example, a restaurant can go in a dining list, while several meeting locations can go in a work-travel list. The save action attaches the selected location to that list immediately.
Create a new list
Create a new list when the pin has a different purpose or when you want to keep a trip, project, or event separate. You can make the list during the save flow on mobile or computer, then use that list as the destination for similar locations.
Decide whether the list should remain private
Google says saved places are visible only to the account holder unless the user creates and shares a list. A private list is appropriate for personal addresses, reminders, or places you do not want other people to see.
Use a shareable list for other people
If someone else needs the pin, share the list that contains it rather than assuming every default list can be shared. Android users can create private lists, share a list link, and invite collaborators. People viewing a shared list may see collaborators’ names and profile pictures, as well as who added or edited places and notes.

Google’s computer list guidance says starred places cannot be shared. If sharing is important, save the pin to an appropriate shareable list instead of relying on the starred-places list.
Where to find a saved dropped pin
Android
Open Google Maps, tap You, and open the list that contains the pin. Select the saved entry to view its map location and available place details.
iPhone or iPad
Open Google Maps, tap You, and choose the relevant list. Your saved location is inside that list.

Open Google Maps and click Saved. Select the list, then select the saved place. Signing in with the same account used when saving is essential when you want the entry to appear on another device.

Saved pin versus an offline map

If you are preparing for travel without reliable data service, save important locations to a list and separately download the required offline map area. Neither action replaces the other.

Sign in for cross-device access
Saved places are associated with the Google account in use when you save them. Sign in to find the same lists on your phone, tablet, and computer. If a saved pin appears on one device but not another, first check that both devices use the same account.
Understand the default privacy setting
Saving a place does not automatically publish it. Google says saved places remain visible only to the account holder until a list is shared. Sharing changes who can see the list and, for collaborative lists, may expose contributor names, profile pictures, and activity such as who added or edited a place or note.
Keep the 3,000-entry limit in mind
Google’s computer help guidance says saved lists are limited to 3,000 entries. Lists with more entries may not display properly. If a very large list becomes difficult to view, divide locations into smaller, purpose-based lists rather than continuing to add everything to one list.

Troubleshooting when a saved pin is missing
The Save button is not visible
- Make sure you selected a location and opened its name or address card. On mobile, the Save action is in that card rather than on the unselected map.
- On a computer, click the place or search result so its details are open before looking for Save.
- If the map is showing only the general map view, select the location again and open the details panel.
The pin does not appear on another device
- Confirm that you are signed in on both devices.
- Check that the account is the same one used to save the location.
- On Android or iPhone/iPad, open You; on a computer, open Saved, then inspect the list you selected during saving.
You cannot find the pin inside your lists
- Open each plausible list rather than relying only on a general map view; the save action places the location in the list you chose.
- Check whether you created a new list during saving. The pin will not necessarily be in an older list with a similar name.
- If the list is extremely large, remember Google’s stated 3,000-entry limit and the warning that lists above that size may not display properly.
You want to share a saved location but sharing is unavailable
Use a shareable list for the location. Google’s computer guidance says starred places cannot be shared, so move or re-save the pin in a list intended for sharing. Review collaborators before sending an invitation or list link because shared lists can show contributor identities and editing activity.
You expected the pin to work without an internet connection
Saving a location does not download map data. Download an offline map area separately if you need offline map access; the saved-list entry and the offline download serve different purposes.
A reliable workflow for saving any dropped pin
- Select the exact location: search for it, tap it on a mobile map, click it on a computer, or use coordinates on a computer.
- Open the location card: on mobile, tap the name or address at the bottom; on a computer, open the selected place’s details.
- Save to a deliberate destination: click or tap Save, then choose an existing list or create one.
- Verify retrieval: use You on mobile or Saved on a computer and open the list.
- Set access intentionally: leave the list private, or share a suitable list if other people need the location.
- Plan for connectivity separately: download an offline map area if the location must remain usable without a connection.
This workflow prevents the most common mix-up: treating a saved list entry as if it were an offline map, or sharing a list without checking which people and activity details it exposes.
