Sandbox an enterprise AI agent as if it were an untrusted workload: isolate its runtime, deny access to files and networks by default, issue a unique short-lived identity, and authorize every tool call outside the model. Add human approval at irreversible boundaries, isolate memory by tenant, and keep tamper-resistant logs with a rapid kill switch. A confirmation dialog by itself is not a security boundary.
What enterprise agent sandboxing must protect
An agent can read documents, call APIs, execute code, browse websites, send messages, or operate a computer. Its model may be manipulated by a prompt injection in a web page, email, retrieved file, tool description, or tool response. The resulting call can be syntactically valid and authenticated while still violating the user’s intent or organizational policy.
The objective is therefore not merely to stop malicious code. It is to contain mistakes, confused-deputy behavior, stolen credentials, malicious content, runaway loops, and accidental disclosure. Use independent controls so that failure of the model, a prompt, a single tool, or one policy component does not become unrestricted access.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Least privilege: give each agent, tool, data source, token, and action only the permissions required for its task.
- External authorization: a deterministic gateway evaluates every invocation; the model never grants itself access.
- Human control: require a fresh approval for destructive, irreversible, external-send, purchase, deployment, production-change, or permission-change actions.
- Accountability: record who initiated an action, what the agent attempted, which policy decision was made, and what happened in an audit system the agent cannot modify.
OWASP’s 2026 isolation guidance states: “Permission prompts are not a security boundary against a manipulated agent; isolation is.” That distinction should shape the architecture from the first design review.

Reference architecture: separate reasoning from authority
Keep the language model in an orchestration layer that can propose actions but cannot directly reach enterprise systems. A policy gateway, isolated execution runtime, and tool services sit between the model and every capability.
| Layer | Primary responsibility | Controls to require |
|---|---|---|
| Agent registry | Describe and approve each agent | Owner, sponsor, purpose, model/version, tenant scope, approved data, tools, dependencies, risk tier, review expiry |
| Orchestrator | Manage plans, context, and state | Instruction/data separation, bounded loops, token and time budgets, no direct credentials |
| Authorization gateway | Decide whether a specific call may run | Agent and user identity, exact tool operation, target resource, data classification, rate and cost limits, approval state |
| Sandbox runtime | Contain code and adapters | Read-only mounts, blocked metadata and private-network paths, explicit egress allowlists, CPU and memory quotas, kill switch |
| Tool services | Perform business operations | Independent authorization, strict schemas, resource-level checks, output classification, idempotency and rollback |
| Audit and response plane | Provide evidence and emergency control | Append-only logs outside the agent, alerts, token revocation, agent disablement, incident correlation |
The tool service must make its own authorization decision even when a gateway has approved a request. This prevents a compromised gateway credential or routing error from becoming a universal bypass.
Step 1: inventory and register every agent
Do not start by writing a prompt. Start with an inventory entry that can be reviewed and revoked. Record:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Business purpose, owner, sponsor, operating environment, and tenant boundary.
- Model provider and exact model/version, orchestration code version, and deployment artifact.
- Approved data classes, retention period, memory stores, and downstream systems.
- Every tool, API, browser capability, file operation, shell command family, and MCP server the agent can reach.
- Dependencies, network destinations, expected call volume, maximum cost, and failure behavior.
- Risk tier, required human approvals, review date, and named incident responder.
Maintain an approved registry for tools and MCP servers. A registry entry should include the security review, pinned version or digest, owner, data classification, allowed tenants, and an expiry date. Treat a new tool version or newly advertised MCP capability as a change requiring review, not as a harmless update.
Step 2: define capability tiers
Use capability tiers to make approval and monitoring predictable. NIST’s January 2025 consortium workshop, attended by approximately 140 experts, produced a taxonomy that distinguishes read-only and write actions across trusted and untrusted environments.
| Tier | Typical examples | Default treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Read-only | Query an approved knowledge base; list a ticket; inspect a build log | Automate after identity, tenant, resource, and data-scope checks |
| Constrained write | Add a comment; create a draft; update a test record; open a low-risk ticket | Permit only within an explicit resource scope, schema, rate limit, and rollback plan |
| Write in a trusted environment | Change a controlled configuration in staging; merge a reviewed change | Require stronger policy, separation of duties, and often a human checkpoint |
| Write in an untrusted or production environment | Delete data; deploy to production; alter permissions; send an external message | Block by default; require fresh, contextual approval and an auditable rollback |
Apply the tier independently to each operation. “Ticket tool” is not a permission; reading a ticket, editing its title, attaching a file, and closing it have different consequences.
Step 3: issue a dedicated identity and delegated authority
Create a unique workload identity for each agent or narrowly bounded agent role. Never reuse a developer’s personal credential or grant standing administrator access.
- Bind the workload to a non-human identity that can be disabled without affecting a person’s account.
- Use short-lived tokens minted for a specific audience, tenant, operation class, and time window.
- Propagate the originating user’s “on behalf of” context so downstream services can enforce that user’s data scope.
- Separate credentials by tool and environment. A reporting agent should not possess the deployment credential simply because both run in the same cluster.
- Request secrets from a secret manager at execution time. Do not place long-lived keys in prompts, environment files, images, source repositories, or agent memory.
- Constrain token claims to exact resources, methods, and data classifications; deny omitted or ambiguous claims.
Delegation must be bounded in both time and authority. A token that remains valid after the user signs out, the agent is disabled, or an incident begins is a revocation failure.

Step 4: enforce policy before every tool call
Route all calls through a gateway that receives a structured request rather than free-form text. At minimum, evaluate:
- Agent identity, software version, workload environment, and current risk state.
- Originating user, tenant, session, and delegated authority.
- Exact tool name, operation, arguments, target resource, and destination.
- Input and output data classification, residency requirements, and allowed handling.
- Rate, concurrency, token, and monetary cost limits.
- Whether the operation is reversible, whether approval is required, and whether a valid approval is attached to these exact parameters.
Use an explicit decision such as allow, deny, or needs_approval. Do not let a natural-language explanation from the model satisfy a missing field. Validate arguments against a versioned schema, reject unknown fields, normalize paths and URLs before policy evaluation, and re-check the normalized value before execution.
Microsoft’s 2026 shared-responsibility guidance summarizes the requirement as “Authorization on every action, not only at session start.” AWS guidance makes the complementary point: “An agent with unconstrained tool access has no meaningful privilege boundary.” Both statements rule out a one-time login check as the main control.
Step 5: build the sandbox runtime
Filesystem controls
- Start with an empty or read-only root filesystem.
- Mount only the working directory and reference data required for the task; use read-only mounts wherever possible.
- Keep host sockets, container runtimes, device files, kernel interfaces, and credential directories inaccessible.
- Use separate writable scratch storage with quotas and automatic cleanup.
- Normalize and constrain paths to prevent traversal, symlink escapes, archive extraction attacks, and writes outside the assigned workspace.
Network controls
- Deny egress by default and allow only named destinations, ports, methods, and protocols.
- Block cloud metadata services, loopback access to control planes, private address ranges, cluster control endpoints, and internal DNS zones unless explicitly required.
- Resolve hostnames through a controlled proxy and evaluate the resulting IP, certificate, destination tenant, and request method.
- Require a new approval before adding a network destination or uploading data to an external service.
- Apply ingress isolation so other workloads cannot connect to the agent’s listener or debug interface.
Resource and lifecycle limits
- Set CPU, memory, process, disk, execution-time, output-size, and token budgets.
- Limit concurrency and recursion so an agent cannot create an unbounded swarm of calls.
- Provide a reliable kill switch that stops the runtime, revokes tokens, and prevents queued actions from executing.
- Use immutable images or pinned digests and verify them at launch.
Containers can be appropriate when the host is hardened and the threat model is moderate. Use a stronger isolation boundary, such as a microVM or equivalent, when agents execute untrusted code, handle sensitive data, or combine shell, browser, and network capabilities. The choice should follow the blast radius you can tolerate, not convenience.
Step 6: cover every tool path
Shell and code execution
Prefer an allowlisted command set over a general shell. Run as a non-root user, remove compilers and package managers unless needed, pin dependencies, and scan generated artifacts before they leave the sandbox. Capture stdout, stderr, exit status, hashes, and resource usage. A shell denial must not be bypassable through a scripting interpreter, archive utility, or alternate binary.
File and document tools
Expose virtual file identifiers instead of arbitrary host paths. Enforce tenant and classification checks on open, read, write, rename, export, and delete separately. Scan uploads for malware and active content, strip or quarantine macros where policy requires, and classify extracted text before it enters the model context.
Browsers and computer-use tools
Run browsers in a separate profile and network sandbox. Disable access to local files, browser credential stores, extension APIs, and internal administration pages. Treat page text, DOM attributes, images, downloads, and clipboard contents as untrusted data. Require approval before form submission, account changes, purchases, or external messages.
Recommended Free Tools
APIs and business systems
Use narrowly scoped service accounts and resource-level authorization. Enforce idempotency keys, request size limits, optimistic concurrency, and server-side validation. Return only the fields the agent needs; filtering after the model receives an entire record is too late.

MCP servers and tool descriptions
Register each MCP server, pin its version, review its declared tools and schemas, and place it behind the same gateway as native tools. Do not treat a server’s description, documentation, or self-reported safety claim as authority. Test that a server cannot open an unapproved network connection, read host files, or invoke another privileged tool through chaining.
Step 7: separate instructions from untrusted data
Prompts, retrieved documents, web pages, emails, logs, MCP descriptions, and tool responses are data unless a trusted policy component explicitly marks them as instructions. Keep system policy and user intent in a protected channel that retrieved content cannot overwrite.
- Label each context item with its source, tenant, classification, and trust level.
- Delimit data clearly and tell the model that embedded commands are not authorization.
- Strip or quarantine content that attempts to alter policy, reveal secrets, bypass approval, or redirect a tool.
- Have the gateway validate the proposed action against the original user request and policy, not against the model’s explanation of why the action is safe.
- Record prompt-injection indicators and use them to trigger review or a narrower execution mode.
Even perfect instruction separation cannot replace authorization. A manipulated model may still produce a well-formed call, so the external policy decision remains mandatory.
Step 8: place human approval at the right boundary
Approval should be specific, fresh, and understandable. Present the reviewer with the exact tool, operation, target, parameters, data to be disclosed, expected side effect, expiration time, and rollback path. Bind the approval cryptographically or by an unambiguous correlation ID so it cannot be reused for a different request.
Require a human checkpoint for:
- Deletes, irreversible transformations, and bulk changes.
- External email, messages, public posts, or file sharing.
- Purchases, financial transfers, or changes that create contractual commitments.
- Production deployments, schema changes, security-control changes, or permission grants.
- New network destinations, new data classes, or actions outside the registered agent scope.
Read-only work and reversible changes can usually remain automated when their resource, data, and rate limits are enforced. Do not approve an entire session when the risk is attached to one operation; approve the operation and expire the decision promptly.
Step 9: isolate memory and tenant data
Give each tenant and, where appropriate, each user a separate memory namespace. Enforce tenant identity at the storage layer, not only in a prompt variable. Encrypt data in transit and at rest, apply retention limits, and prevent one agent from searching another tenant’s embeddings, conversation history, caches, or scratch files.
Classify memory writes as carefully as reads. A model may be allowed to read a project note but not permanently store a secret, personal record, or unverified instruction. Provide deletion and legal-retention workflows that bypass the agent and operate directly on the memory service.
Step 10: log, monitor, and revoke
Send audit events to infrastructure the agent cannot alter. Each event should include:

| Approach | Isolation strength | Permission granularity | Identity and delegation | Approval and audit | Tool coverage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prompt-only restrictions | None; the model can be manipulated | Informal and easy to bypass | Often a shared or long-lived credential | Confirmation may be shown, but no reliable enforcement | Does not consistently cover shell, file, browser, API, or MCP paths |
| Container without a policy gateway | Moderate runtime containment; authority may remain broad | Coarse at the process or network level | Frequently static credentials inside the workload | Logs can be incomplete or alterable by the workload | Depends on whether every adapter uses the container |
| Sandbox plus external gateway | Strong when filesystem, network, and runtime boundaries are tested | Per-agent, per-tool, per-operation, resource, data, rate, and cost checks | Unique workload identity, short-lived tokens, user delegation | Contextual approval, append-only events, rapid revocation | Can cover shell, file, browser, API, and MCP calls through one policy path |
| Hardened isolated runtime plus gateway and independent tool authorization | Highest practical blast-radius reduction for high-risk workloads | Fine-grained gateway and server-side enforcement | Separate credentials and environments with explicit delegation | Non-repudiable evidence and emergency shutdown across layers | Broad coverage, provided every alternate path is tested |
The last row is not a product label; it is a control pattern. Select the isolation strength according to data sensitivity, code execution, network reach, and consequence of error.

Validation tests before production
Test the complete path, not just the model’s normal demonstration.
- Attempt to read host files, credential mounts, device files, metadata endpoints, private addresses, and another tenant’s memory. Each attempt should fail and generate an attributable event.
- Ask the agent to use an unregistered tool, unknown argument, alternate hostname, encoded path, or shell alias. The gateway should reject it after normalization.
- Inject instructions into a web page, document, email, log, tool description, and MCP response. Confirm that the content cannot change policy or obtain secrets.
- Replay an expired approval with changed parameters, target, tenant, or destination. It must not authorize the new request.
- Exhaust CPU, memory, disk, time, token, rate, and cost budgets. Verify termination, cleanup, and alerting.
- Revoke the identity while calls are queued and while a runtime is active. Confirm that queued work is canceled and active work loses authority.
- Break one control deliberately: disable a gateway route, compromise a test tool, or alter a model response. Check that another layer still limits the blast radius.
- Verify that logs remain available and immutable after the agent loses access to its runtime and storage.
Common failure modes and fixes
“The user clicked approve, so it is safe.”
A generic approval can be replayed or attached to a different action. Replace it with a one-time decision bound to exact parameters, target, data, and expiry; keep isolation active even after approval.
“The agent only has read access.”
Reading secrets, personal data, or private source code can itself be harmful. Classify data, limit fields and rows, prevent export to unapproved destinations, and monitor unusual volume.
“The container is isolated, but the browser is not.”
An unrestricted browser can reach internal services or upload files outside the intended boundary. Apply the same filesystem, network, identity, and approval controls to browser and computer-use adapters.
“The gateway checks the tool name.”
A permitted tool can hide a dangerous operation behind free-form arguments. Validate the exact operation, normalized target, schema, data class, and resource authorization; have the tool service repeat the check.

“One service account is simpler.”
Shared credentials erase attribution and turn one compromised agent into a broad breach. Issue distinct identities and short-lived delegated tokens, then revoke only the affected workload.
“We can add logging later.”
Without an external audit trail, you cannot prove what the agent did or stop it reliably. Emit policy, approval, identity, result, and lifecycle events before enabling sensitive tools.
Governance questions that remain open
NIST’s 2026 identity and authorization concept paper asks how to establish least privilege when an agent’s required actions may not be fully predictable at deployment time. That is an active standards question, not a reason to grant broad access. Use staged capability expansion: begin read-only, collect observed needs, add one constrained operation at a time, and require a new review for each scope increase.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should every agent action require a human?
No. Automate read-only and reversible operations when deterministic authorization, tenant isolation, rate limits, and logging are in place. Require fresh approval for irreversible, destructive, external-send, purchase, deployment, production-change, permission-change, or new-destination actions.
Are containers sufficient for an enterprise AI agent?
A hardened container may be suitable for lower-risk workloads, but agents that execute untrusted code, handle sensitive data, or combine shell and network access need a stronger isolation boundary such as a microVM or equivalent, plus gateway and tool-service authorization.
What is the fastest way to stop a compromised agent?
Use a tested kill path that disables the agent, revokes short-lived tokens, stops active runtimes, cancels queued jobs, blocks new destinations, and preserves external audit logs. Verify this procedure during validation rather than during an incident.
