Run an autonomous AI agent inside a disposable microVM or equivalently hardened virtual machine, not directly on your host. Start with no shared files, deny network access by default, keep credentials outside the guest, isolate high-risk tools and MCP servers, and inspect or destroy the environment when the task ends. A permission prompt in an agent interface is useful for workflow control, but it is not a security boundary: OWASP puts it plainly, “Permission prompts are not a security boundary against a manipulated agent; isolation is.”
What it means to sandbox an autonomous AI agent
An autonomous agent can read files, execute commands, install packages, call web services, and invoke connected tools without waiting for a person at every step. Sandboxing places those capabilities inside a constrained environment so a malicious repository, poisoned dependency, compromised MCP server, prompt injection, or model mistake cannot automatically reach unrelated parts of your computer.
The important boundary is between the guest environment and your host operating system. A sandbox should limit at least six things:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Kernel and process access: the agent should not be able to inspect or control host processes.
- Filesystem exposure: only the files required for the task should be visible, preferably as a private copy.
- Network egress: outbound destinations should be explicitly allowed rather than freely reachable.
- Credentials: API keys, SSH keys, cloud tokens, password stores, and production configuration should remain outside the guest.
- Tool authority: filesystem, browser, database, shell, and MCP capabilities should have separate least-privilege policies.
- Persistence: the environment should be reset or deleted so installed packages, histories, and artifacts do not silently carry into the next run.
A sandbox is not intended to make a compromised agent harmless inside its own boundary. The goal is to contain the damage and make every transfer of data or authority deliberate.

Why the model and approval prompts are not enough
An agent can be manipulated by instructions hidden in a repository, an issue, a web page, a dependency, a document, or a tool response. The model may then treat attacker-controlled text as an instruction, approve a dangerous command, or repeatedly try alternatives until one succeeds. A human approval dialog does not prevent that failure mode if the person approves a plausible-looking request or if an integration bypasses the dialog.
OWASP’s DevSecOps guidance therefore treats infrastructure isolation as the control that matters. Use prompts as a second layer for review, never as the only barrier. The agent should still be unable to read your home directory, connect to an arbitrary internal service, or use a host credential if its reasoning is fully compromised.
Choose the isolation boundary: container, microVM, or cloud workspace
For high-autonomy or untrusted work, prefer a microVM or disposable VM with its own kernel. Docker describes its sandbox as a lightweight microVM; agents run on a private Docker Engine inside that VM rather than on the host daemon. A conventional container remains useful for lower-risk jobs, but it shares the host kernel and should not be treated as the sole boundary when an agent may be fully compromised.

| Decision axis | Shared-kernel container | MicroVM or disposable VM | Cloud workspace |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kernel boundary | Shares the host kernel | Separate kernel per VM | Provider-managed isolation; implementation must be verified |
| Host filesystem | Easy to over-mount accidentally | Can be mountless, clone-based, or explicitly mounted | Usually no direct local-host mount |
| Network control | Depends on runtime and firewall policy | Can enforce proxied, policy-controlled egress | Depends on provider and workspace defaults |
| Credential handling | Often exposed through environment variables or files unless designed otherwise | Can use a host proxy or short-lived scoped injection | May use a provider secret broker or scoped tokens |
| Tool and MCP isolation | Must be separately sandboxed | Can be isolated inside the VM | Must follow provider and workspace controls |
| Persistence | Volumes and image layers can survive | VM state remains until reset or deletion | Retention and snapshot rules are provider-specific |
These are design comparisons, not a guarantee for every product. Verify how your chosen runtime handles kernel separation, mounts, network policy, secrets, snapshots, and administrative access.
Use the smallest possible filesystem
Filesystem exposure determines the blast radius of a successful attack. Start with a mountless session for browsing, planning, or experiments. If the agent must edit code, give it a private clone or one dedicated project directory. Do not mount your home directory, SSH configuration, cloud-credential directories, password stores, unrelated repositories, browser profiles, or host IPC paths.
Mountless mode
No host workspace is shared. This is the safest starting point for inspecting a suspicious archive, testing an idea, or asking an agent to generate files that you will later copy selectively. The trade-off is that the agent cannot see your existing project until you deliberately provide an input.
Clone mode
The source repository is exposed read-only and the sandbox creates a private in-VM clone for edits. This preserves a clean host checkout while allowing normal build and test operations inside the guest. Treat the repository and its configuration as untrusted input even when the code came from your own organization.

Direct mode
A direct workspace mount exposes the host working tree read-write. Use it only when the convenience is worth the risk, and only for a dedicated directory with a current backup. Any file changed through this mount remains on the host after the sandbox is deleted.
Never mount the host Docker socket. Access to that socket can give an agent control of the host Docker environment and, effectively, the host system. If nested containers are needed, use the private engine provided inside the isolated VM.
Deny network access by default
Network access is both a supply-chain risk and an exfiltration channel. An agent that can reach every website may download unreviewed code, submit stolen files, probe internal services, or follow instructions from an attacker-controlled endpoint. Permit only destinations required for the task, such as a model endpoint, a package registry, or a source-control service.
Docker’s documented sandbox model places outbound TCP traffic through a host-side proxy that enforces an access policy. Its sandbox-specific network blocks ICMP, disables UDP by default, and requires TCP traffic to match an allow-list rule. Whether another runtime provides equivalent controls must be checked rather than assumed.

- Write down every endpoint the task genuinely needs before starting.
- Allow the smallest hostname or domain scope that works; avoid a blanket internet rule.
- Keep UDP and ICMP disabled unless a documented dependency requires them.
- Log both permitted and denied requests, including the destination and the process that made the request.
- Review unexpected destinations after the run and tighten the policy before the next session.
Network policy should be independent from the agent’s own configuration. Do not rely on a prompt telling the model not to browse or exfiltrate data.
Keep credentials outside the sandbox
Do not copy production API keys, SSH private keys, cloud tokens, password files, signing keys, or long-lived personal access tokens into the guest. Environment variables and mounted secret files are readable by any process that gains sufficient access inside the sandbox, including a malicious package or tool.
Prefer a short-lived, narrowly scoped credential, and limit it to the exact repository, API operation, or environment needed. A host-side proxy can inject credentials into approved outbound requests while keeping the raw value outside the VM; in that design the agent can make an authorized request without reading the underlying secret.

How to stop an agent reading SSH keys
- Do not mount your home directory or the directory containing SSH configuration.
- Do not forward your host SSH agent socket into the sandbox.
- Use a disposable key restricted to one test repository, or perform source-control operations through a host proxy.
- Set network rules so the guest can reach only the source-control endpoint required for the task.
- Revoke the disposable credential when the run ends, especially if the repository or dependencies were untrusted.
The same principle applies to cloud credential folders, package-manager tokens, browser cookies, local certificate stores, and password-manager integrations.
Isolate tools, extensions, hooks, and MCP servers
Every tool connected to an agent expands its attack surface. A local MCP server is not automatically safe merely because it is not listening on a public network interface. It may still read files, make network requests, access databases, or return attacker-controlled instructions.
OWASP recommends minimal-privilege sandboxes, strict argument validation, and isolation for filesystem, network, and database tools. Separate capabilities where practical: a browser tool should not automatically receive database credentials, and a file-editing tool should not automatically receive unrestricted network access.
Tool-control rules
- Run each MCP server under the least-privileged user and filesystem policy it needs.
- Validate paths, URLs, commands, and identifiers before execution; reject traversal, shell metacharacters, and unexpected schemes.
- Use parameterized database APIs instead of constructing queries from model text.
- Disable tools that are not required for the current task.
- Review tool output as untrusted data; it can contain prompt-injection instructions.
- Record tool calls, arguments, results, process creation, and policy decisions for later review.
Project configuration can execute code before the agent does anything interesting. Treat startup commands, hooks, extensions, task runners, and agent configuration files as executable input. Disable automatic hooks and shared skill stores unless you have inspected them.
A safe setup procedure
1. Prepare the host
- Update the host operating system and the virtualization or sandbox runtime.
- Use a separate user account or a dedicated computer for especially sensitive work.
- Back up the project you may expose, and decide which output files may return to the host.
- Remove unused credentials from the environment that will launch the sandbox.
2. Create a disposable, separate-kernel environment
Select a microVM or disposable VM for untrusted autonomy. Confirm that agent-created containers use the VM’s private engine rather than the host daemon. If you must use a regular container for a lower-risk task, document that it is a shared-kernel boundary and compensate with stricter mounts, users, network rules, and credentials.

3. Start mountless
Create the session with no host workspace. Test that the agent cannot list your home directory, inspect host processes, read SSH configuration, or reach host-only services. A failed test is a configuration problem; do not continue by granting broad access.
4. Add one controlled input
For code work, provide a read-only source mount and let the sandbox create a private clone. If clone mode is unavailable, use a dedicated project directory rather than a general workspace. Copy only the files needed for the task, and inspect generated artifacts before returning them to the host.

5. Apply the egress policy
Configure the allow-list before starting the agent. Permit the model endpoint and required package or source-control services only. Keep UDP and ICMP off unless a dependency has a documented need. Enable logging for accepted and rejected requests.
6. Provide scoped credentials
Use a host-side proxy or a short-lived token limited to the operation. Verify that the raw token is absent from the guest filesystem, environment, process list, shell history, and agent logs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors7. Add tools one at a time
Enable only the MCP servers and extensions required for the task. Give each its own filesystem and network policy, validate arguments, and leave hooks or startup commands disabled until reviewed.
8. Run with observable limits
Capture command and tool logs, network decisions, process creation, and resource use. Set practical CPU, memory, storage, and runtime limits where your platform supports them. Watch for repeated attempts to access denied paths or destinations; that pattern can indicate prompt injection or a compromised dependency.
9. Review before release
Inspect the diff, generated scripts, package-lock changes, build outputs, clipboard contents, and any files the agent proposes to copy. Check for embedded secrets, unexpected binaries, network endpoints, persistence mechanisms, and commands that would behave differently on the host.
10. Destroy or reset the environment
Delete the sandbox after sensitive work, or reset it from a known-good image. Deletion matters because packages, images, agent history, caches, and files inside the VM can persist until the VM is removed. Direct-mounted host files require separate backup and inspection because they survive sandbox deletion.

Docker states that each sandbox runs an agent in its own microVM. The guest has its own Linux kernel, and the agent’s containers run on a private Docker Engine inside that VM. This is materially different from running an agent in a normal container attached to the host daemon.

The documented workspace choices illustrate the risk gradient: mountless shares nothing, clone mode exposes a read-only source and edits a private in-VM copy, and direct mode exposes the host working tree read-write. The sandbox also uses a host-side proxy for outbound traffic and can keep raw credential values outside the VM through proxy-based injection.
Isolation is not the same as harmlessness. The agent has full privileges inside Docker’s VM, including sudo, package installation, and use of the private Docker Engine. Assume it can persist data inside that boundary until the sandbox is reset or deleted, and apply the review and cleanup steps above.
Can I let an AI coding agent run commands safely?
You can reduce the risk enough for many development tasks, but “safe” means contained and reviewable, not trusted. Run commands in a separate-kernel environment, expose only a private project copy, deny arbitrary egress, keep credentials outside, and review every change before it reaches the host or a production system.
Commands that compile code, install dependencies, run tests, or generate files are usually manageable under those controls. Commands that interact with production services, sign releases, modify host configuration, access personal data, or use unrestricted browser and database tools should remain outside an autonomous session or require a separate, human-controlled workflow.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The agent can list unrelated personal files | Home-directory or broad workspace mount | Remove the mount; restart mountless or with one dedicated project directory |
| The agent reaches any website | Open egress or a permissive proxy rule | Replace it with an explicit destination allow-list and review logs |
| An agent can control host containers | Host Docker socket mounted | Remove the socket and use the isolated VM’s private engine |
| SSH or cloud credentials appear in logs | Secrets passed through files or environment variables | Revoke the credential, remove the mount, and use proxy injection or a short-lived scoped token |
| Unwanted code runs at startup | Repository hooks, extensions, or configuration commands enabled | Disable automatic hooks, inspect configuration, and re-run from a clean image |
| Changes remain after the sandbox is deleted | Direct workspace mount | Inspect and restore the host directory from backup; use clone mode next time |
| A fresh session contains old packages or history | VM, volume, or image state persisted | Destroy the environment completely or reset from a known-good image |
Preflight and shutdown checklist
- Use a separate user or VM and a fully updated host.
- Begin mountless; add one narrowly scoped project input only when necessary.
- Prefer a private clone or read-only source mount for untrusted repositories.
- Keep the host Docker socket and host IPC interfaces out of the guest.
- Allow-list outbound domains; leave UDP and ICMP disabled unless required.
- Use short-lived, scoped credentials or a host-side proxy; never mount production secret stores.
- Run MCP servers and high-risk tools under separate least-privilege policies.
- Disable unnecessary hooks, extensions, and shared skill stores.
- Log tool calls, network decisions, process creation, and resource use.
- Review diffs, artifacts, clipboard contents, and generated commands before release.
- Destroy or reset the sandbox after the task.
What a sandbox cannot guarantee
No single configuration proves that an agent cannot escape every implementation bug, hypervisor flaw, malicious device, or administrator mistake. Verify the runtime’s kernel boundary and policy behavior, keep the host patched, minimize the data exposed, and treat cloud-provider isolation and retention rules as implementation-specific.
There is also no authoritative breach-rate, escape-rate, or performance figure that can be applied generally to consumer autonomous-agent sandboxes. Security depends on the particular runtime, version, host configuration, mounts, credentials, tools, and network rules. Measure and review your own controls instead of relying on a universal percentage.
Choosing a practical default
For browsing, analysis, or experiments, choose a mountless disposable microVM with no credentials and no network unless explicitly needed. For untrusted code, use clone mode, a narrow package and source-control allow-list, and a private tool policy. For a trusted project where convenience outweighs stronger isolation, a direct mount can work, but only with a dedicated directory, backups, scoped credentials, and careful diff review.
If your platform cannot provide a separate-kernel boundary, use the strongest disposable VM or cloud workspace available and compensate with stricter filesystem, network, credential, and tool controls. The more autonomy and access an agent receives, the less acceptable a shared-kernel, broadly mounted, unrestricted environment becomes.
