Run the agent inside a disposable VM, microVM, or tightly restricted container—not directly on your everyday account. Mount only a dedicated project directory, deny network egress by default, keep credentials in a broker or vault, and enforce filesystem, syscall, process, and resource limits. Then test the boundary from inside and outside the sandbox before allowing untrusted code to run.
What sandboxing an AI agent actually protects
An AI coding or automation agent can execute commands, create child processes, read files, call network services, and use whatever tools its runtime can reach. OpenAI’s security guidance puts the boundary plainly: “Agent-generated code can access the files, credentials, and network available to its environment.” A prompt that says “do not read my files” is therefore not an access-control mechanism. The operating system, runtime, and network controls must make those files and routes unavailable.
Sandboxing is the practice of creating a smaller execution environment with an explicit allowlist of capabilities. The agent receives a working directory, selected binaries, and only the network and credentials required for one task. Everything else is absent, read-only, blocked, or mediated by a separate control process.

A sound design protects four boundaries:
- Filesystem: what paths can be seen or modified.
- Network: which destinations, ports, DNS services, and metadata endpoints can be reached.
- Credentials: which identities and tokens can be used, for how long, and for which operation.
- Control plane: which tools, plugins, callbacks, and host processes can perform actions outside the sandbox.
These boundaries are independent. A container with a perfect mount list can still exfiltrate data through an open internet connection. An offline sandbox can still damage every writable host directory that was mounted into it. Treat each control as necessary, not as a substitute for the others.

Start with a task contract and threat model
Before choosing a runtime, write down what the agent must do and what it must never do. This turns vague safety goals into testable policy.
Record the required capabilities
- The exact source and output directories.
- Commands and interpreters required by the build or test process.
- Package registries, source hosts, APIs, or internal services that must be contacted.
- Whether the agent needs to create child processes, listen on a local port, or access a browser.
- Whether source files are inputs only or must be writable.
- Whether a human must approve releases, deletion, deployment, or other irreversible actions.
Every item not on this list is a candidate for removal. If a task only edits one repository and runs local tests, there is no reason to expose a home directory, an SSH agent socket, cloud credential files, or a general-purpose internet connection.
Separate the harness from compute
Use a small, trusted harness for authentication, approval prompts, policy decisions, logging, credential issuance, and recovery. Run agent-generated commands in separate compute that can be destroyed and recreated. OpenAI’s sandbox guidance describes this harness/compute separation: the control process should not depend on the agent being able to reach host services directly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This separation also limits the impact of a compromised tool. The harness can pass a single approved result into the sandbox rather than exposing its own sockets, environment, or filesystem.
Classify the workload
| Workload | Typical risk | Appropriate starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Trusted code review or formatting | Low execution risk, but source may be confidential | Rootless container or userspace-kernel sandbox with read-only source and no network |
| Dependency installation and tests | Build scripts and packages execute arbitrary code | Disposable container or microVM, restricted mounts, explicit registry allowlist |
| Untrusted repository or generated exploit-prone code | Assume deliberate escape and exfiltration attempts | VM or microVM with a minimal guest filesystem and deny-by-default egress |
| Production-connected automation | Compromise could alter real systems or data | Isolated VM, separate account, short-lived scoped credentials, approvals, and comprehensive audit |
Choose the isolation layer
Isolation strength, startup time, operating cost, and developer convenience trade off against one another. The right choice depends on the consequences of an escape, not on the agent’s brand or model.
Containers with a shared kernel
A rootless container can provide a clean process, mount, user, and network namespace with low startup overhead. It is often sufficient for ordinary development when combined with read-only volumes, syscall filtering, resource limits, and a carefully configured network namespace. Do not treat the container boundary as equivalent to a separate machine: the host kernel remains shared, and privileged settings, device access, broad mounts, or a host-connected socket can defeat the intended isolation.
Userspace-kernel sandboxes
A userspace-kernel layer such as gVisor intercepts many system calls before they reach the host kernel. This can reduce the impact of a kernel-facing exploit while preserving a container-style workflow. It still requires correct mounts, credentials, network rules, and integration review.

VMs and microVMs
A virtual machine or microVM gives the workload a separate guest kernel and a stronger host boundary. Use this option for hostile repositories, high-impact automation, or workloads that require broad system behavior. Keep the guest filesystem minimal and disposable; virtualization does not make an over-privileged guest account safe by itself.
How to decide
- Choose a VM or microVM when an escape could expose personal files, production credentials, regulated data, or other tenants.
- Choose a rootless container or userspace-kernel sandbox for routine development when the host contains no secrets accessible to the runtime and policy controls are layered.
- Use a fresh instance per run or per user whenever practical. Resetting state removes persistence that an agent could otherwise hide in caches, hooks, or background processes.
Build the filesystem view
Filesystem exposure is decided by mounts, namespaces, ownership, and permissions—not by the agent’s instructions. Begin with an empty or freshly created workspace such as /srv/agent-workspace. Mount only that directory and any explicitly required read-only inputs.
Mount only what the task needs
- Keep the host home directory out of the sandbox.
- Do not mount
~/.ssh, an SSH agent socket, cloud credential directories, password stores, browser profiles, or editor configuration. - Never expose the host container or orchestration socket unless you have accepted that the agent may obtain host-level control.
- Use read-only mounts for source, reference data, compiler toolchains, and caches when writes are unnecessary.
- Put generated artifacts in a separate output directory that can be copied out after inspection.
Docker’s documentation warns that a direct workspace mount makes changes visible on the host and that a host-connected process may use host permissions. That visibility is useful for development, but it means a path mistake can become a host modification. A disposable copy is safer for untrusted code.
Set ownership and identity deliberately
Run as an unprivileged user inside the sandbox. The user should own the workspace but have no authority over host devices, system directories, or unrelated mounts. Avoid broad Linux capabilities and device passthrough. A read-only root filesystem, with small writable locations for temporary files and build output, reduces persistence.
Recommended Free Tools
Check the boundary from both sides
Inside the sandbox, enumerate mounts and attempt harmless reads of representative sensitive paths. For example:
id
mount
ls -la /srv/agent-workspace
for p in /home /root/.ssh /run/host-services /var/run/docker.sock; do
if [ -e "$p" ]; then echo "visible: $p"; else echo "absent: $p"; fi
done
From the host, create a sentinel file outside /srv/agent-workspace and confirm that a sandbox process cannot read or modify it. Also verify that a file created in the workspace is the only host-visible change expected from the run. These checks should fail closed: an unexpected path or writable mount is a release-blocking configuration error.
Enforce a deny-by-default network policy
Filesystem and network policies must be designed separately. Start with no outbound network in the sandbox. Then add only the destinations required by the task, such as one package registry, a source host, or a specific API.

Use layers of network control
- Network namespace: give the sandbox no interface or a controlled interface by default.
- Firewall policy: deny outbound traffic except approved addresses and ports.
- DNS policy: use a resolver that can log and restrict names; do not assume that blocking one hostname blocks its alternate address.
- Egress proxy: route approved traffic through an authenticated proxy that records destination, identity, and decision.
- Application policy: configure package managers and tools to use only the approved registry or API host.
Anthropic’s sandbox guidance notes that access is determined by VPC and firewall rules and describes an egress allowlist in its reference harness. The practical lesson is that a runtime flag alone is not a complete network policy: inspect the routes, resolver, firewall, proxy, and cloud metadata path together.
Verify approved and blocked destinations
From inside the sandbox, inspect routes and DNS, then test one approved endpoint and one deliberately unapproved endpoint. Confirm that the unapproved request fails before any data leaves the environment. Check that link-local metadata addresses and host-gateway addresses are unreachable. Repeat these tests after changing the runtime, base image, proxy, or firewall.
ip route
cat /etc/resolv.conf
getent hosts approved.example
getent hosts blocked.example
curl --fail --connect-timeout 5 https://approved.example/health
curl --connect-timeout 5 https://blocked.example/
Replace the example hostnames with the exact endpoints in your task contract. Do not infer safety from a successful package install: a package manager may contact mirrors, redirectors, telemetry endpoints, or Git hosts that were not reviewed.
Keep credentials outside the sandbox
Do not copy long-lived API keys, private keys, cloud metadata credentials, or personal access tokens into an image, repository, ordinary environment file, or broad mount. If the task needs authentication, use a vault or broker that issues the smallest short-lived credential for one operation.
Prefer capability-specific tokens
- Limit the token to one service, repository, project, or API operation.
- Make it expire automatically and revoke it when the run ends.
- Allow read-only access unless a write is essential.
- Bind issuance to the run identity and record who approved it.
- Prevent the sandbox from querying cloud instance metadata or host credential endpoints.
OpenAI recommends separated credentials and vault-managed secrets. Anthropic’s guidance likewise recommends a secrets manager and blocking instance-metadata access. A broker can inject a credential only into the process that needs it and can redact it from logs; an environment variable visible to every child process cannot provide the same boundary.
Design for secret leakage
Assume that an agent can print environment variables, inspect process arguments, read shell history, or copy files it can access. Keep secrets out of command-line arguments, disable shell history where appropriate, redact logs, and destroy the workspace after the run. Rotate any credential that may have been exposed rather than relying on deletion from the workspace.
Restrict syscalls, privileges, and resources
Use defense in depth so that a mount or application-policy mistake does not become unrestricted host access. Apply a seccomp or equivalent syscall profile, a filesystem policy such as Landlock where available, and mandatory access controls such as AppArmor or SELinux when supported by the platform. OWASP lists restricted namespaces or containers, gVisor, Firecracker, AppArmor/SELinux, seccomp, mount namespaces, and read-only volumes as complementary controls.

Set resource ceilings
Limit CPU, memory, process count, disk space, open files, and wall-clock execution time. There is no universal safe number: choose limits from the normal resource profile of the specific build or analysis task, test them in staging, and leave enough headroom for expected compilers and test suites. A process limit prevents a fork bomb; a disk quota limits runaway logs; a timeout stops a task that never exits.
Remove unnecessary privilege
- Run as a non-root user and drop all capabilities not explicitly required.
- Do not pass host devices, kernel modules, or privileged namespaces.
- Use a read-only root filesystem where the workload permits it.
- Restrict executable locations and writable temporary directories.
- Disable set-user-ID behavior and unneeded interpreters in high-risk workloads.
These controls reduce blast radius; they do not prove that code is harmless. Keep the VM or container disposable even when the policy appears strong.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAudit integrations that can bypass the sandbox
A well-configured compute boundary can be bypassed by a tool that runs elsewhere. Review every MCP server, plugin, browser integration, package manager helper, editor callback, and host-side automation.
Local servers and sockets
A local MCP server or plugin that starts a host process is outside the sandbox’s protection. Docker specifically warns that a local MCP server may operate with host permissions. Do not expose host Unix sockets, Docker sockets, SSH agent sockets, editor bridges, or unrestricted loopback services. If an integration is required, run its server inside the same restricted environment or place it behind a narrow, authenticated protocol handled by the harness.
Approval and recovery paths
Keep privileged orchestration in the harness. Require explicit human approval for deletion, publication, deployment, credential issuance, and other irreversible actions. Record the requested action, the policy decision, the identity that approved it, and the resulting tool call. Make cancellation and teardown independent of the agent so a hung or hostile process cannot prevent recovery.
Inspect tool data flow
For each integration, document what data it receives, where it executes, which identity it uses, and whether it can create child processes or make network requests. A tool that appears to return a single value may still read a broad directory or forward prompts and files to an external service.

- Write the contract. List files, commands, endpoints, outputs, approvals, and retention time. Remove everything not required.
- Select isolation. Use a VM or microVM for high-impact or hostile-code workloads; use a rootless container or userspace-kernel sandbox only when its shared-kernel risk fits the threat model.
- Create a fresh workspace. Generate a new directory or guest disk for the run. Do not reuse a developer home directory or an old agent cache.
- Configure mounts. Bind-mount only the workspace. Mark reference data read-only and leave host homes, credential directories, sockets, and devices out.
- Configure identity. Run as an unprivileged user with no unnecessary capabilities or host groups.
- Disable networking. Start with no interface or a default-deny firewall. Add approved destinations one at a time through a logged egress path.
- Broker secrets. Issue a short-lived, operation-specific credential only after approval. Block metadata services and prevent secrets from entering images or source trees.
- Apply syscall and resource policy. Add seccomp, Landlock or equivalent filesystem restrictions, AppArmor/SELinux where available, and CPU, memory, process, disk, and time limits.
- Review integrations. Place MCP servers, browsers, callbacks, and package helpers inside the policy boundary or mediate them through the harness.
- Run boundary tests. Check mounts, sensitive-path reads, routes, DNS, approved and blocked endpoints, metadata access, host sockets, and writes outside the workspace.
- Execute and observe. Log tool calls, policy decisions, network requests, process creation, resource use, and credential issuance without recording secret values.
- Teardown and verify. Revoke credentials, destroy the workspace or guest, close network access, and confirm that no background process or artifact remains.
Verification checklist before trusting an agent
- The agent can see only the intended project and explicitly approved read-only inputs.
- Reads of a representative home directory, SSH key, cloud credential path, host socket, and metadata endpoint fail.
- Writes outside the workspace fail, while expected project writes succeed.
- The route table, resolver, firewall, and proxy agree on the deny-by-default policy.
- Only documented endpoints work; redirects and alternate addresses are accounted for.
- No host process, MCP server, browser bridge, or callback runs with broader permissions than the sandbox.
- The process runs without root or unnecessary capabilities.
- Syscall, filesystem, mandatory-access, CPU, memory, process, disk, and timeout controls are active.
- Credentials are short-lived, scoped, absent from images and logs, and inaccessible after teardown.
- Logs identify actions and decisions without exposing source or secrets beyond the retention policy.
Repeat the checklist after changing the base image, runtime, kernel, mount list, firewall, proxy, credential broker, or integration. A policy that was safe last month can become unsafe when a new tool adds a host callback or a build script adds a network dependency.
Common failure modes and fixes
“The prompt says not to read my files.”
Why it fails: prompts influence behavior but do not remove operating-system permission. Fix: enforce the rule with namespaces, mounts, ownership, and a disposable workspace, then test forbidden paths.
“The container is isolated, so I mounted my home directory.”
Why it fails: the mount intentionally exposes the home directory, and changes are visible on the host. Fix: mount a fresh project copy, use read-only mode where possible, and export only reviewed artifacts.
“The network is restricted, but package installation still reaches unknown hosts.”
Why it fails: package managers follow mirrors, redirects, and dependency metadata. Fix: log DNS and proxy decisions, allowlist every required registry or mirror, and test blocked alternatives.
“The agent cannot reach the host, but a local integration can.”
Why it fails: a host-side MCP server, editor callback, or socket executes outside the sandbox. Fix: move the integration inside the boundary or expose only a narrow, authenticated harness API.
“A secret was deleted after the run.”
Why it fails: it may remain in shell history, process arguments, logs, caches, filesystem snapshots, or outbound traffic. Fix: use brokered short-lived credentials, redact logs, destroy the workspace, and rotate anything that may have been exposed.
“The policy blocks normal builds.”
Why it fails: limits were chosen without measuring the task’s normal resource and dependency profile. Fix: stage the workload, record its CPU, memory, process, disk, and network needs, then raise only the specific limit required and rerun boundary tests.
Operational trade-offs
| Control choice | Security benefit | Operational cost |
|---|---|---|
| No network | Strongest exfiltration and supply-chain boundary | Requires vendored dependencies or a controlled prefetch step |
| Firewall allowlist | Permits required services while blocking general browsing | Needs maintenance for mirrors, redirects, DNS, and new dependencies |
| Authenticated egress proxy | Central logging, filtering, and identity-aware decisions | Adds proxy availability, certificate, and configuration work |
| Read-only mounts | Prevents accidental or malicious edits to inputs | Builds may need separate writable caches or output paths |
| Disposable VM or microVM | Stronger host separation and simple cleanup | Longer startup, image maintenance, and higher resource use than a container |
| Rootless container | Low overhead and reduced host privilege | Shared-kernel exposure remains; some builds need user-namespace adjustments |
Choose the least permissive combination that still completes the task reliably. Convenience is not a security requirement; if a workflow needs a broad mount, unrestricted network, or long-lived credential, treat that as a high-impact design requiring stronger isolation and explicit approval.
What a defensible architecture looks like
A practical high-assurance arrangement has four zones. The developer or service submits a task to a trusted harness. The harness creates a fresh VM or microVM, attaches one workspace disk, and applies a deny-by-default network policy. A credential broker issues a short-lived token only after the harness verifies the task contract. The agent runs as an unprivileged user under syscall, filesystem, and resource controls. Logs and approved artifacts leave through the harness, while the guest and credentials are destroyed at completion.
For lower-risk local development, the same pattern can use a rootless container or userspace-kernel sandbox: fresh workspace, minimal mounts, no host sockets, offline by default, explicit egress, and repeatable boundary tests. The key property is not a particular product. It is that the environment—not the agent’s promises—defines what is possible.
