Assume an AI agent will eventually be hijacked. The reliable defense is not a better refusal prompt; it is a hard runtime boundary that limits what a compromised agent can read, execute, change, and send. Run the agent in a disposable container, microVM, or operating-system sandbox; give it a low-privilege identity; mount only the files required for the task; make the root filesystem read-only; deny network traffic by default; and issue only short-lived, narrowly scoped credentials.

Keep authorization, policy decisions, approvals, secrets, and audit logs outside the model. Prompt injection then becomes a contained application failure instead of a path to your home directory, cloud account, production systems, or proprietary data.

What prompt injection can do to an AI agent

Prompt injection is a control-plane attack delivered through content an agent is asked to process. NIST defines it as “An attack which exploits the concatenation of untrusted input with a prompt constructed by a higher-trust party such as the application designer.” The untrusted content may be a user message, but it can also be a web page, email, issue, repository file, PDF, log entry, memory record, or tool description.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An indirect injection hides malicious instructions in data that the agent retrieves. NIST’s Generative AI Profile notes that such attacks have been demonstrated to steal proprietary data or run malicious code remotely. In a January 17, 2025 agent-hijacking example, malicious instructions in ingested data caused an agent to email the five largest files in a cloud drive, delete the originals, and send a ransom message.

Model safeguards are therefore not a security boundary. A March 23, 2026 NIST red-team report recorded more than 250,000 attack attempts from over 400 participants and found at least one successful attack against every target frontier model. Your design must assume that the model can follow an attacker’s instructions.

The security design that contains a hijacked agent

Keep data and authority separate

Mark every webpage, document, email, ticket, log, repository file, memory item, and tool description as untrusted. The agent may summarize or transform that material, but retrieved text must not rewrite the policy that governs its tools or permissions. Preserve provenance so each piece of content can be traced to its source. Quarantine or sanitize content before it is allowed near a high-impact operation.

Put the policy engine, authorization service, approval workflow, and credential broker in a separate trust zone. The model proposes an action; an independent component decides whether that action is permitted. Never let a model-generated sentence such as “the user approved this” count as an approval.

Choose a boundary that matches the worst credible failure

A sandbox limits blast radius; it does not make the model trustworthy. A practical boundary has separate process, mount, network, and user namespaces, a read-only root filesystem, an ephemeral writable layer, and a lifecycle that destroys the environment after the task. Apply seccomp, AppArmor, or SELinux where available. Remove raw-socket, host-device, privilege-escalation, and other unused capabilities.

OWASP explicitly warns that a bare chroot is not a process sandbox. A directory change without kernel-enforced restrictions does not stop an escape or prevent access to other host resources.

Comparison of isolation choices

Choice Kernel boundary Startup and operations Controls and observability Best fit Important limitation
Container Processes share the host kernel but can be separated with namespaces. Usually the most convenient and fastest option; exact latency depends on the runtime and is not stated here. Patch the image and the host kernel. Supports read-only mounts, dropped capabilities, seccomp, AppArmor or SELinux, resource limits, and network policies. Existing container logging is usually easy to integrate. A practical baseline for controlled coding, document processing, and other tasks with limited exposure. A kernel vulnerability or incorrect host configuration can weaken isolation.
MicroVM Provides a separate guest kernel behind a virtual-machine boundary. Operationally heavier than a container; exact startup figures are not established. Patch the guest image, host kernel, and virtual-machine monitor. Adds guest-kernel and VM configuration controls while retaining explicit network and device policies. Requires stronger image and fleet management. Arbitrary code execution, untrusted repositories, or highly sensitive data where a stronger boundary is justified. More infrastructure and patching complexity than a container.
OS-enforced sandbox Uses the host operating system’s process, syscall, filesystem, and network policy mechanisms; strength varies by implementation. Can be lightweight, but policy authoring and platform-specific maintenance require expertise. Fine-grained syscall, path, identity, and network rules with host-level audit integration. Tasks that need native performance or integration with a controlled host service. Coverage depends on the operating system and the completeness of the policy.

Use a container when its shared-kernel risk is acceptable and the task is tightly constrained. Prefer a microVM or a stronger OS isolation design when the agent executes arbitrary code, handles highly sensitive material, or connects to systems whose compromise would be severe. The correct choice is the one that contains the worst credible agent failure, not merely the one that is easiest to launch.

Build the sandbox step by step

1. Inventory every capability before deploying the agent

Write down the files, commands, APIs, domains, and identities the task genuinely needs. Classify each tool as read-only, constrained-write, or write. NIST’s tool-use taxonomy uses these three categories and maps them across trusted and untrusted environments. Read-only tools can often run with lower friction; constrained-write tools need narrowly defined targets; write tools that affect money, authentication, personal data, production systems, or external communications need deterministic authorization and usually human approval.

  • List exact input directories and output directories rather than “the workspace.”
  • List executable programs and arguments instead of granting a general shell.
  • List API methods and resource identifiers instead of giving a broad service role.
  • List allowed network domains and ports, including whether DNS is required.
  • Record which actions are reversible and which destroy or disclose data.

2. Create a disposable runtime

Build a small, pinned image or guest filesystem containing only the language runtimes, libraries, and utilities required for the task. Start a fresh instance for each job, give it a task identifier, and destroy it after completion or timeout. Do not preserve an agent’s writable layer between unrelated users or repositories; persistence can turn one injection into a later compromise.

A container launch should express the security intent explicitly. The following is an illustrative pattern; adapt flags and policy modules to the runtime you operate and verify them in your environment:

docker run --rm
  --read-only
  --tmpfs /tmp:rw,noexec,nosuid,size=64m
  --network none
  --cap-drop ALL
  --security-opt no-new-privileges
  --pids-limit 256
  --user 65532:65532
  --mount type=bind,src=$PWD/task,dst=/workspace,readonly
  agent-image:pin

The command is not a complete security assessment. Confirm that the image digest is pinned, the runtime actually enforces the flags, resource limits are appropriate, and no host socket or device is exposed. For a microVM, apply the same principles inside the guest and keep the virtual machine’s device set minimal.

3. Run as a dedicated low-privilege identity

Use a non-root user with no interactive login and no ability to install packages or alter the sandbox policy. Give the process a dedicated service identity, separate from developer, administrator, and production identities. Split read-only and write identities so a task that only analyzes data cannot accidentally obtain a credential capable of modifying it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not add the agent to broad groups simply to fix a permission error. Change ownership or expose a narrowly scoped path instead. Disable privilege escalation and ensure the identity cannot invoke a set-user-ID helper, access host devices, or create a new privileged namespace.

4. Mount only task data

Expose a temporary workspace containing the exact repository, document set, or input files required. Mount it read-only unless the task must produce an output; when writes are necessary, bind a separate output directory with a quota and collect the result through a controlled service.

Never mount a home directory, the host filesystem, an SSH directory, cloud CLI configuration, a production socket, a container-engine socket, or an .env file. Normalize every requested path, resolve symbolic links, and reject traversal such as ../ before opening a file. Keep the audit log outside the sandbox’s writable paths so the agent cannot erase its record.

5. Make the filesystem and process surface difficult to change

Use a read-only root and a small, disposable writable area such as a size-limited temporary filesystem. Remove package managers, compilers, debuggers, network utilities, and interpreters that the task does not need. Apply process, memory, CPU, file-descriptor, and storage limits so a malicious instruction cannot turn the worker into a denial-of-service tool.

Drop every Linux capability by default and add back only a capability with a documented, tested need. Apply seccomp plus AppArmor or SELinux profiles where available. Deny raw sockets, mounting, module loading, kernel tracing, host IPC, and direct device access unless the task demonstrably requires one of them.

6. Deny network egress by default

A network connection is an exfiltration channel even when the agent cannot read a secret directly: it may send a file, environment value, command output, or encoded data to an attacker. Start with no network interface. If the task needs an external service, route traffic through an egress proxy or firewall that allowlists exact domains, methods, ports, and request sizes.

Separate sensitive systems from general-purpose tool servers. Payment, authentication, personal-data, and production endpoints should not be reachable from the same agent environment that browses arbitrary content or executes untrusted code. Log DNS queries, destination addresses, request metadata, and policy decisions. Treat unexpected DNS, redirects, newly observed domains, and long-lived connections as alerts.

7. Broker short-lived, minimum-value credentials

Do not place long-lived secrets in prompts, environment variables, files, source control, or the image. Keep secrets in a broker or secrets manager outside the sandbox. When an approved tool call requires a credential, release only the minimum value to that specific tool for the shortest practical lifetime, scoped to the exact resource and operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prefer a task token that expires automatically and cannot be exchanged for another identity. Bind it to the agent, task, audience, and permitted API methods. Revoke it on timeout, cancellation, policy violation, or sandbox destruction. A compromised agent should never be able to list all available secrets or request a broader role.

8. Put a policy gateway in front of every tool

Treat tool names, descriptions, schemas, arguments, and returned data as untrusted. The gateway—not the model—must validate and authorize each call. Require strict JSON schemas with additionalProperties: false, reject unknown fields, enforce type and length limits, and validate values against an allowlist.

Normalize paths before authorization and reject traversal, symbolic-link escapes, and alternate encodings. Reject shell metacharacters and command chaining when a command interface is unavoidable. Prefer parameterized APIs over string-built shell or SQL. Do not let a tool description claim permissions that the gateway does not enforce.

A useful decision sequence is:

  1. Authenticate the agent and task context.
  2. Check the requested tool against the task’s allowlist.
  3. Validate the complete argument object against a strict schema.
  4. Normalize paths, URLs, resource identifiers, and encodings.
  5. Classify the operation as read-only, constrained-write, or write.
  6. Apply identity, data-sensitivity, destination, rate, and size limits.
  7. Require an approval token for destructive, financial, authentication, personal-data, or external-sharing actions.
  8. Execute outside the model process and return only the minimum result.

9. Keep approvals outside the model

Use deterministic rules for high-impact actions. A human approval screen should show the exact operation, files or records affected, destination, identity, expiration, and irreversible consequences. Approving “send the report” is not enough if the report’s contents or recipient can change after approval; bind approval to a hash or canonical representation of the exact request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set approval timeouts and prevent the agent from approving its own request. If a request changes after approval, require a new decision. For routine low-risk reads, policy can authorize automatically; for writes and data sharing, require a stronger control.

10. Log and alert outside the sandbox

Record the agent and task identity, input provenance, model or workflow version, tool name, exact arguments, approvals, returned data classification, network destinations, policy decisions, start and finish times, and termination reason. Send logs to append-only or access-controlled storage that the agent cannot mount or modify.

Alert on attempts to read sensitive paths, inspect environment variables, invoke an unapproved tool, alter sandbox configuration, access a host socket or device, create unexpected child processes, or contact an unapproved destination. Preserve enough context to reconstruct the decision without logging secret values themselves.

11. Tear down and verify

Destroy the runtime, temporary credentials, writable layer, and network state after each task. Verify that output files passed the expected schema and destination checks before releasing them. Confirm that no process, token, queued message, or scheduled job survived the teardown. Treat cleanup failures as security incidents rather than harmless operational noise.

Preventing common exfiltration paths

Attack path Typical injection goal Required control
Filesystem Read .env, SSH keys, cloud configuration, or unrelated repositories. No host mounts; exact read-only task paths; normalized path checks; separate output directory.
Environment and process state Dump environment variables, arguments, or neighboring process data. Minimal environment; no secrets in variables; dedicated user and PID namespace; process and syscall restrictions.
Network Upload files or command output to an attacker-controlled server. No egress by default; proxy or firewall allowlist; DNS and destination logging; request-size limits.
Tools and APIs Call a powerful tool with modified arguments or a poisoned description. External policy gateway; strict schemas; allowlisted methods and resources; independent authorization.

  • Attempt to read each forbidden path, environment variable, host socket, device, and neighboring process.
  • Try path traversal, symbolic-link escapes, alternate encodings, shell metacharacters, command chaining, and malformed JSON.
  • Ask the agent to invoke an unapproved tool, alter its own policy, create a privileged child process, or disable logging.
  • Attempt data exfiltration through DNS, HTTP, redirects, error messages, tool outputs, and oversized requests.
  • Try tool poisoning by changing descriptions, schemas, defaults, and returned content.
  • Verify that destructive, financial, authentication, personal-data, and external-sharing actions stop for lack of approval.
  • Kill the worker mid-task and confirm that credentials, processes, mounts, and queued actions are removed.

Run these tests before release and after changes to the model, prompts, tools, retrieval pipeline, memory, images, network policy, or authorization rules. A passing test suite proves only that the tested paths were blocked; it does not establish that the model is safe.

Failure modes and fixes

The agent needs a file that the sandbox cannot read

Do not respond by mounting the whole home directory. Add a narrowly scoped read-only export, copy only the required file into a task workspace, or create a brokered tool that returns the specific fields needed. Re-run path and provenance tests after changing the mount.

A package or API requires outbound access

Do not switch the worker to unrestricted networking. Mirror the dependency, preinstall it in a pinned image, or allow the smallest set of domains and ports through a proxy. Log and review every exception, and remove it when the task ends.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A command fails because the user is not root

Prefer a non-privileged alternative or build the dependency into the image. Granting root to make a command convenient defeats the boundary. If a privileged operation is unavoidable, isolate it in a separate, narrowly scoped service with its own policy and approval.

Logs contain sensitive output

Classify and redact tool results before logging, store sensitive evidence in a restricted audit system, and record hashes or references where full content is unnecessary. Never allow the agent to choose the log destination or retention policy.

Approval prompts become routine clicks

Reduce approval volume by automatically authorizing genuinely low-risk reads and constraining the parameters of routine writes. Keep human approval for high-impact actions, display the exact scope, and invalidate approval whenever the request changes.

A deployment checklist

  • Untrusted content is labeled and cannot rewrite policy or permissions.
  • The worker runs in a disposable container, microVM, or OS-enforced sandbox.
  • The process uses a dedicated non-root identity with privilege escalation disabled.
  • Only task files are mounted; the root is read-only and writable state is ephemeral and limited.
  • Host sockets, devices, credentials, SSH material, cloud configuration, and .env files are absent.
  • Capabilities, syscalls, child processes, CPU, memory, storage, and process counts are restricted.
  • Network access is denied by default and exceptions pass through an allowlisted proxy or firewall.
  • Secrets are brokered as short-lived, task-scoped values rather than stored in prompts or environment variables.
  • Every tool call is validated and authorized outside the model with strict schemas and normalized arguments.
  • High-impact writes require deterministic authorization and, where appropriate, human approval.
  • Audit logs are external, protected from modification, and include provenance, arguments, destinations, and policy decisions.
  • Adversarial tests cover injection, tool poisoning, exfiltration, traversal, and escape before and after material changes.

What a sandbox can and cannot guarantee

A well-designed sandbox can prevent many classes of secret reading, unauthorized writes, and network exfiltration even when the agent follows malicious instructions. It cannot correct a policy that grants too much access, detect every side channel, or make an unsafe external system safe. Keep sensitive services segmented, minimize the data supplied to the task, and review the boundary whenever the agent gains a new tool or data source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The decisive controls are outside the model: least-privilege identity, no host mounts, ephemeral execution, short-lived credentials, default-deny egress, independently validated tool calls, and approval for high-impact writes. Treat model-layer refusal as a helpful signal—not as the mechanism that protects your data.
