The AUR is not a curated app store. It is a collection of user-submitted build recipes. A safe installation means reviewing the exact repository revision and every file it contains, understanding what its shell code will do, verifying supplied source integrity, building without unnecessary privileges, and inspecting the resulting package before installation. Votes, popularity, age, or a familiar maintainer name can provide context, but none replaces that review.
This guide shows a repeatable workflow for deciding whether an AUR package is explainable and acceptable to build. If any command, download, privilege change, signature, or filesystem write cannot be justified, stop before running makepkg and request a second review.
What the AUR is—and what it is not
The Arch User Repository contains community-maintained package descriptions, usually centered on a PKGBUILD. The recipe tells makepkg where to obtain source material, which dependencies are needed, how to configure and compile the software, and which files to place into a package. You then install that locally built package with pacman.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
AUR content is unofficial and unsupported by Arch. There is no Arch security review that guarantees a recipe is safe, and the repository does not certify that the upstream software itself is trustworthy. You are responsible for deciding whether to download, execute, and install the recipe.

The build chain and its trust boundaries
- You obtain a Git checkout or source snapshot containing the recipe and companion files.
makepkgreads thePKGBUILDas shell code, evaluates its variables, downloads the listed sources, checks supplied integrity data, extracts archives, and runs the declared build functions.- The functions may execute arbitrary commands as your user, make network requests, invoke compilers or interpreters, and write throughout the build directory. A recipe can also arrange for install-time scripts or hooks to run later.
makepkgcreates a package archive.pacmanthen installs that archive, normally with administrator privileges, and may run the package’s installation functions.
Every boundary matters. A valid upstream archive can be paired with a malicious PKGBUILD; a harmless recipe can fetch a compromised release; and a package that builds correctly can still install an unexpected service or hook.
Why votes and popularity are not a safety rating
Votes, comments, download activity, a long publication history, and an active maintainer are useful signals about maintenance and user interest. They do not prove that the current commit is safe. A maintainer account can be compromised, a recipe can change after you last inspected it, or a popular package can contain an unsafe command that many users never noticed. Record and review the exact commit you intend to build rather than relying on the package’s reputation.
Prepare a safer build environment
Update Arch and install the build tools
Update the system before building so repository libraries, compilers, and package metadata are mutually compatible. Install the complete base-devel group, as Arch’s packaging guidance recommends. Do this from an administrator-capable account, but perform the build itself as a normal user.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Keep the host fully updated before resolving dependencies.
- Use a dedicated working directory that is easy to delete after the build.
- Do not run
makepkgas root. If a recipe appears to require root during compilation, treat that as a warning and determine why before proceeding. - Keep important data backed up. A normal-user build reduces the blast radius, but it does not make malicious code harmless.
Decide whether a clean chroot is appropriate
A clean chroot starts the build with a known Arch userspace and only declared dependencies. It improves reproducibility, prevents accidental use of packages installed on your workstation, and helps distinguish a defective recipe from local configuration. Use the Arch-supported clean-chroot workflow when the package is important, when you need repeatable results, or when a normal build fails mysteriously. A failure that also occurs in a clean chroot is stronger evidence that the recipe or its upstream source needs investigation; it is not proof of maliciousness.
Obtain and pin the exact AUR revision
Use the AUR web interface or its Git repository, then record the package page, maintainer, checkout date, and commit identifier. Review before updating the checkout again, because a later commit may change the commands you approved.
- Enter the package directory and record the revision with
git rev-parse HEAD. - Review recent history and patches with
git log --oneline --decorate -n 10andgit log -p -n 3. Pay particular attention to changes insource, checksums, validpgpkeys, install hooks, and shell functions. - Keep a copy of the reviewed checkout or note its commit so you can reproduce the decision later.
Do not review one revision and build another. If you pull new commits, repeat the review from the beginning.

Inventory every file before executing anything
Start with a complete file list, not just the filename displayed on the package page:
find . -maxdepth 3 -type f -print | sort
Read the PKGBUILD, then inspect every other file in the checkout, including:
.installfiles and any pre-install, post-install, pre-upgrade, or post-upgrade functions;- patches and generated patch helpers;
- systemd units, desktop files, udev rules, hooks, and service configuration;
- shell, Python, Perl, or other helper scripts;
- license files and metadata, which can reveal whether the advertised software matches the source;
- submodules, vendored source, archives, and prebuilt binaries committed to the repository.
“Warning Carefully check the
PKGBUILD, any .install files, and any other files present in the package’s git repository for malicious or dangerous commands.”
Open text files in a pager or editor rather than executing them. A script’s filename, extension, or comments do not establish that it is safe.
How to inspect a PKGBUILD line by line
Metadata and package identity
Confirm that pkgname, pkgver, pkgrel, architecture declarations, license, and project description match the software you meant to install. Check whether the recipe is a split package and whether it creates several outputs. Unexpected package names, unrelated descriptions, or a license that conflicts with the upstream project are reasons to stop and investigate.
The source array and download locations
Trace every entry in source. For each URL or local file, answer four questions:
Rank #3
- 【Large size】:Measuring 800 x 300 mm/ 31. 5×12 inches, which is wider and taller than others. Large mouse pad can perfectly fit your keyboard and mouse of any size, and there is also ample space for peripherals such as phones, tablets, etc.
- 【LED backlight mouse pad】:Blade Hawks RGB mouse pad provides 7 static modes and 7 dynamic modes will give you the options you are looking for. Power-off memory function remembers the last lighting mode you selected. The super glow fiber Chroma will give you a colorful gaming setup that you want.

- 【Plug and play】: This mouse and keyboard pad is powered by USB, plug and play, no driver required. One button control light modes. Press one time to change the lighting mode, press twice to change the brightness, press and hold about 3 seconds turn ON/OFF.
- Is the host the expected upstream project or a clearly justified distribution mirror?
- Does the filename and archive content correspond to the stated version?
- Is a patch or helper script necessary for this package, and can you explain what it changes?
- Does the recipe download anything during
prepare(),build(),check(), orpackage()in addition to the declared sources?
Build-time network access deserves special scrutiny. A recipe that silently downloads an executable, a second script, or an unpinned archive defeats the transparency you get from the source array. A URL that redirects to an unexpected host, a release that is only available as an opaque binary, or a download performed by a helper command should be explained before you continue.
Variables, shell expansion, and command paths
Read variable assignments as executable shell syntax, not as inert configuration. Track command substitutions, loops, conditionals, environment variables, temporary directories, and path concatenation. Look for commands such as curl, wget, git, sudo, su, chmod, chown, mount, systemctl, package-manager calls, and interpreters invoked on downloaded content.
For every command, identify the user that will run it, its input, its output, and its destination. Pay special attention to unquoted variables, wildcard expansion, commands evaluated with eval, encoded or compressed shell text, and paths that escape the build directory. Obfuscation is not automatically proof of maliciousness, but it prevents meaningful review and is a valid reason to stop.
Build functions
Read prepare(), build(), and check() in order. Explain each patch, configuration flag, compiler option, test command, and environment-variable change. A conventional source build should be recognizable: extraction, optional patching, configuration, compilation, tests, and staging. A function that contacts an unrelated server, disables verification, installs files into the live system, or asks for privileges unrelated to compilation needs independent review.
The package() function stages files into the package directory. Trace every install, cp, mv, and directory creation command. Verify that destinations are under the package staging root and that the resulting paths are what you expect. A command that writes directly to /etc, /usr, /opt, a home directory, or another live-system path during the build is unusual and should halt the process until explained.
Install files and hooks
An .install file is not just metadata. Its functions can run when pacman installs, upgrades, or removes the package. Read every function and identify service activation, user creation, permission changes, cache updates, kernel or initramfs actions, and network access. Examine systemd units, udev rules, desktop autostart entries, and package hooks for persistence or behavior that is broader than the advertised application.

Verify checksums and PGP signatures
Checksums confirm content, not intent
Compare every checksum array entry with the corresponding source entry and ensure the number and order match. Use makepkg’s source verification before building:
makepkg --verifysource
A checksum mismatch can mean a corrupted download, an upstream release replacement, a changed mirror, or a recipe that no longer describes the expected source. Do not solve it by blindly regenerating checksums. Identify which content changed, review the new archive, and confirm the change with the upstream release process or maintainer.
What makepkg does with signatures
When the source array includes a corresponding .sig or .asc file, makepkg automatically attempts verification using your GPG keyring. If a required key cannot be verified, makepkg aborts. That failure is a protection, not an inconvenience to bypass.
Read validpgpkeys as an assertion about which signing keys the recipe expects. Independently confirm that each key belongs to the upstream project or release process you intend to trust. A key identifier in a recipe is not proof of ownership, and downloading a key from an unexplained location is another trust decision.
Why a valid signature is not a safety certificate
A valid signature authenticates the signed data to the holder of the corresponding private key. It does not certify that the data is benign. Arch guidance explicitly warns: “In any case, be aware also malicious code may be signed, therefore you must vet the PKGBUILD, particularly for sections that may pull software code from outside the repositories.” A signed archive can contain vulnerable or malicious software, and a signed source archive does not bless commands added by the AUR recipe.

- Return to the reviewed checkout and confirm the commit has not changed.
- Run makepkg as your normal user. Use
makepkg -sormakepkg --syncdepswhen you want makepkg to resolve dependencies available from configured Arch repositories. - Review each dependency before accepting it. Dependencies from the AUR are separate recipes and require the same inspection;
--syncdepsdoes not make them trustworthy or automatically review them. - Watch the build output for unexpected network connections, privilege requests, downloads, or writes outside the working tree. Stop with
Ctrl+Cif the behavior diverges from your explanation. - For important or difficult packages, repeat the build in a clean chroot and retain the logs and resulting package metadata.
Do not add an unknown repository, import an unexplained signing key, disable signature or checksum verification, or copy commands from comments merely to make a build complete. If a recipe requires administrator access, determine whether that requirement belongs only at installation time and whether it can be removed from the build.

Inspect the package before installing it
Successful compilation proves only that the declared build completed. Before giving the package to pacman, inspect the archive and its metadata.
- List the files in the package archive with
pacman -Qlp package-file.pkg.tar.zstand, if needed, tar -tf package-file.pkg.tar.zst. Replace the command’s filename with the exact archive produced in your directory. - Look for unexpected system services, autostart entries, shell profiles, set-user-ID or set-group-ID binaries, writable directories, hooks, and files outside the application’s normal locations.
- Read package metadata with
pacman -Qp package-file.pkg.tar.zstand compare the name, version, architecture, dependencies, license, and description with the reviewed recipe. - Check the package’s install script and backup-file metadata if present. Ensure that any service or daemon is something you deliberately chose to install.
- Only after the archive matches your expectations, install it with
pacman -U package-file.pkg.tar.zst. Review pacman’s transaction summary before confirming.
After installation, verify enabled services, listening sockets, created users, and modified configuration if the software is a daemon. Remove a package with pacman if it behaves unexpectedly, then investigate residual configuration and data rather than assuming removal reverses every side effect.
Choosing between two AUR packages for the same software
When several recipes package the same upstream project, compare the instructions—not just votes or package names.

|---|---|---|
| Upstream identity | Does the recipe fetch the project and release you intended? | Directly attributable upstream source and release files |
| Maintainer activity | Are recent changes explained and reviewed? | Readable commit history, current issue responses, and small, purposeful diffs |
| Patches | Why are patches needed, and what do they alter? | Minimal patches whose purpose can be explained from the upstream code |
| Network behavior | Does the build contact hosts beyond declared sources? | No unexplained downloads; all required sources are listed and checked |
| Binary content | Is the package compiling source or bundling opaque executables? | Build from inspectable source, or a clearly documented and verifiable upstream binary |
| Integrity coverage | Are checksums and signatures supplied where upstream provides them? | Matching checksums, independently validated signing keys, and no disabled checks |
| Dependency chain | Are dependencies official, necessary, and themselves reviewable? | Small, explicit dependency set with separately reviewed AUR recipes |

Stop conditions: when not to run makepkg
Stop and seek review through Arch community channels when any of these conditions appears:
- Code is obfuscated, encoded, or deliberately difficult to read.
- A recipe downloads and executes an unexplained script or binary.
- It writes outside expected build and package-staging locations.
- It requests unnecessary root privileges, changes ownership broadly, or invokes privilege escalation during compilation.
- It adds an unknown repository, imports an unexplained signing key, or disables checksum or signature checks.
- It bundles opaque prebuilt binaries without a clear upstream provenance.
- It installs unrelated services, persistence mechanisms, browser extensions, credentials helpers, or system hooks.
- You cannot explain a command, a source URL, a key, a dependency, or a destination path.
A scanner can be useful as an additional signal, but it cannot replace manual review of shell code and package behavior. If you cannot explain the recipe, do not run it.
Troubleshooting without weakening the review
| Symptom | Safe response |
|---|---|
| Checksum mismatch | Delete the unexpected source, identify what changed, inspect the new content, and confirm the release. Do not regenerate checksums automatically. |
| Unknown or invalid PGP key | Stop. Confirm the key’s ownership through the upstream release process and import it only from a trustworthy, documented source. |
| Dependency is missing | Determine whether it is an official repository dependency or another AUR recipe. Review the latter separately; do not install an unreviewed chain blindly. |
| Build fails on your workstation | Read the first meaningful error, verify that Arch is current, and retry in a clean chroot. Compare results before changing the recipe. |
| Build fails in a clean chroot too | Treat the recipe, its patch set, or its upstream source as the primary suspect. Check recent commits and maintainer explanations. |
| Package contains unexpected files | Do not install it. Re-read package(), install files, hooks, and generated output; compare with a second recipe or upstream installation instructions. |
| makepkg asks for a password | Stop and identify why. Dependency installation may require administrator approval, but compilation should not require root privileges. |
A practical review checklist
- System updated and complete
base-develinstalled. - Build performed by a normal user in an isolated working directory.
- Exact package commit recorded and recent diffs reviewed.
- Every repository file read, including patches, hooks, helper scripts, units, and
.installfiles. - Every source URL traced and every command explained.
- Checksums verified; supplied signatures checked; signing-key ownership confirmed.
- No unexplained network access, privilege escalation, obfuscation, opaque binaries, or live-system writes.
- Dependencies reviewed deliberately, including any AUR dependencies.
- Build tested in a clean chroot when reproducibility or diagnosis matters.
- Resulting package file list, metadata, install scripts, and transaction summary inspected before
pacman -U.
The AUR can be useful without being treated as inherently safe. The reliable standard is not popularity or a green-looking status indicator; it is a recipe, source set, and resulting package whose behavior you can account for from checkout to installation.
