Use a multi-tool safely by learning the exact model first, fully extending and locking each implement that is designed to lock, keeping sharp edges and pinch points away from your hands, and applying only the force and materials specified in its manual. A multi-tool is a group of small tools sharing one frame; pliers, cutters, blades and drivers differ considerably between models, so never assume that a feature or capacity on one tool exists on another.
Start with the exact manual and a controlled inspection
Before putting a multi-tool under load, identify its model and read the manufacturer’s instructions. The same-looking implement can have a different lock, cutter material limit or opening method on another version. Gerber’s care guidance is available at Product Care; Leatherman’s model-specific instructions include the Crunch User’s Guide and the Military User Guide.
Read the manual before applying force, then practice opening, locking, releasing and closing every implement while the tool is unloaded. The Leatherman Military User Guide warns that the product contains “one or more sharp blades or pinch points.” Treat that as a permanent condition, not a warning that applies only to a knife.

Inspect before each job
- Check that blades, drivers and other implements are free of dirt, corrosion and damage.
- Confirm that a locking implement reaches its fully open position and that its lock engages as the manual describes.
- Look for loose pivots, cracked handles, bent jaws, damaged cutter inserts or a driver tip that no longer fits the fastener.
- Make sure the tool and your hands are dry enough to maintain a secure grip.
- Choose eye protection when cutting, scraping, striking or working where chips could reach your eyes, as advised by the Military User Guide.
Do not use a tool that does not open, close or lock normally. Set it aside for cleaning, adjustment or repair rather than compensating with extra hand pressure.

Know what your multi-tool actually locks
Locking arrangements are model-specific. For example, the current Leatherman Wave+ page lists locking features for every implement except the plier head. The Gerber MP600 page lists bluntnose pliers, replaceable cutter inserts, knives and several screwdrivers, but its listed configuration and access method are not evidence that another MP600 variant, or another brand’s tool, behaves identically.
| What to verify | Why it matters | Where to verify it |
|---|---|---|
| Implement list | You may be reaching for a tool the model does not include, or using a different implement than intended. | Exact model manual and product page |
| Locking points | A non-locking plier head or a locking blade requires different hand placement and force limits. | Manual; do not infer from appearance |
| Blade access | Some blades open from the folded frame; others require the handles or another implement to be opened first. | Opening and closing instructions |
| Cutter type and replacement parts | Regular and hard-wire sections can have different material limits; inserts may be replaceable but not interchangeable. | Model-specific cutter specification |
| Grip and reach | A short handle or obstructed implement can make a task unstable even when the tool technically fits. | Manual, product diagrams and a no-load practice run |
| Force or material limits | No universal torque, wire-size or fastener-capacity rating exists for all multi-tools. | Only the exact manual’s stated limits |
A safe opening and closing routine
- Stabilize the tool. Hold it over a clear work surface, away from your face and other people. Keep the free hand out of the implement’s travel path.
- Identify the implement. Confirm that the knife, cutter, plier or driver you are opening is the one intended for the job.
- Open slowly. Use the designated nail nick, thumb stud, slider or handle movement. Do not use a blade edge as a lever for your fingers.
- Extend fully. Leatherman’s Military User Guide says not to use tools before they are fully extended. Partial extension can leave a lock disengaged and create an unexpected fold or pinch.
- Test the lock without a load. Follow the manual’s release direction and gently verify that the implement stays open. Never test a lock by forcing the tool against a workpiece.
- Set your grip before contact. Keep fingers behind the cutting edge and clear of pivots. Use two hands only when the model’s opening procedure requires it; do not place a finger between closing handles.
- Close deliberately. Remove the tool from the workpiece, release the lock as instructed, and fold the implement while watching the edge and pinch points. Keep children away during storage and handling.
Using a multi-tool knife safely
Cut away from yourself
Point the blade away from your body and from anyone nearby. Gerber’s safe-use guidance states: “Always cut away from your body, or from the body of any other person around which the knife is being applied.” Use a stable surface when possible, keep the non-cutting hand behind the edge, and make controlled strokes rather than sudden pushes.
Hold the material so it cannot slide into the blade. If a second hand is needed, position it to the side and behind the anticipated path. Do not cut toward a thigh, palm, knee or another person, even for a short cut.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteNever substitute the blade for a pry bar or hammer
Gerber specifically advises not using a knife to hammer or pry. Prying twists a blade and can damage the pivot, lock or edge; hammering can send fragments toward your eyes or hands. Use a purpose-built pry tool or a dedicated hammer for those tasks.

- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
Do not use a blade that will not lock open
If a folding blade does not lock as the manual specifies, stop using it. A blade that can fold under pressure can move toward your fingers. Clean or repair the tool according to the manufacturer’s instructions, or replace it; do not tape, wedge or otherwise improvise a lock.
Account for blade style
- Plain edge: Use a controlled slicing motion and keep the edge away from hard surfaces that can chip it.
- Serrated edge: Let the serrations do the cutting instead of forcing a flat push. Sharpen it only with a method intended for serrations.
- Partially exposed or inward-opening blades: Follow the model’s opening sequence and verify which handle or scale shields the edge when folded.
Do not assume that a blade accessible while the tool is folded is safe to manipulate one-handed. Follow the manual’s opening path and keep the other hand clear.
Using pliers without losing control
Grip the work, not the pivot
Open the jaws only as far as needed, place the work deep enough in the jaw area to avoid slipping, and keep fingers behind the handles. The pivot and sliding mechanisms can create pinch points as the jaws close. If the tool has a locking plier mechanism, learn its release before clamping anything.
Recommended Free Tools
Use pliers for the materials and shapes they are designed to hold. Twisting a part that is too large can bend the jaws or suddenly release the workpiece. If you need a high-force grip, long reach or a specified torque, use dedicated pliers or a wrench rated for that job.

Do not confuse plier types
A needlenose head, bluntnose head and locking-plier head offer different reach and grip behavior. The Wave+ page lists needlenose and regular pliers, while the MP600 page lists bluntnose pliers. Those are product examples, not a universal ranking or a promise that every version has the same geometry.
Using wire cutters and material-specific sections
Identify the correct cutter section
The Crunch User’s Guide distinguishes regular cutters for softer grades of wire from a hard-wire notch for hardened wire. That distinction is specific to the Crunch design. Do not transfer its material categories or limits to another multi-tool.
- Read the manual’s permitted wire types, sizes and cutting location.
- Inspect the cutter edges or replaceable inserts for chips, gaps and looseness.
- Place the wire fully in the specified cutting zone; do not cut at the tip unless the manual allows it.
- Keep the wire and tool pointed away from people. Wear eye protection when a cut end could spring or fragment.
- Squeeze smoothly. If the handles stop, twist or require a sudden increase in force, release and reassess instead of jumping on the handles.
Never guess a multi-tool’s capacity or use its cutters on wire beyond the manual’s stated limits. A cutter insert being replaceable does not make it suitable for every grade of wire. The Wave+ page, for example, lists replaceable wire cutters, while the MP600 page lists replaceable cutter inserts; replacement availability does not establish a common material rating.

Using the screwdriver and other drivers
Select a tip that fully fits
Match the driver tip to the fastener’s size and recess. A tip that is too small, too large or the wrong profile can cam out, damage the fastener and send your hand forward. The Wave+ product page lists multiple drivers, but it does not create a universal torque or fastener-capacity rating for multi-tools.
Keep the driver aligned
- Seat the tip completely in the fastener before turning.
- Hold the tool in line with the screw axis; avoid using the driver at an angle.
- Apply steady, moderate pressure toward the fastener while turning slowly.
- Stop immediately if the tip slips, the fastener begins to strip or the implement starts to fold.
- For a seized fastener, precision electronics, high-torque work or a critical joint, switch to a dedicated driver rated for that task.
Keep your other hand away from the driver’s possible slip path. A short multi-tool handle may be convenient in a confined space but can provide less leverage and less control than a full-size screwdriver.
Check the locking arrangement before force
Some multi-tool drivers lock open; others rely on a different mechanism or do not lock. Confirm the arrangement in the manual and keep the implement fully extended. Never brace a non-locking driver against your palm while applying high force.
What to do when an implement folds, slips or jams
| Symptom | Immediate action | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Blade will not lock open | Stop cutting and keep fingers away from the edge. | Clean and inspect according to the manual; obtain service or replacement if the lock remains unreliable. |
| Driver slips | Stop turning and keep the tool pointed away from your hand. | Use the correct tip and alignment; replace a damaged bit or choose a dedicated driver. |
| Handle pinches fingers | Release the load and open the tool slowly. | Relearn the opening path and keep fingers outside the pivot arc. |
| Cutter will not complete a cut | Do not twist or jump on the handles. | Verify wire type and size against the manual; use a rated cutter if outside the limit. |
| Jaws or implements feel gritty | Unload the tool and close it safely. | Clean, dry and lubricate as directed; have damaged parts serviced. |
| Tool is wet or salty | Rinse with fresh water if appropriate and dry it before storage. | Lubricate moving parts and inspect for corrosion. |
Cleaning, drying, lubrication and sharpening
After ordinary use
Remove dirt and debris before applying a light oil. Gerber’s care instructions recommend cleaning debris and moisture first, then using light oil. Work the pivots and locks gently after lubrication, wipe away excess and store the tool dry so oil does not collect grit.

After saltwater or marine exposure
Leatherman explains on its maintenance page that stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, not rust-proof. After saltwater exposure, rinse the tool, dry it thoroughly, lubricate moving parts and inspect hidden surfaces for corrosion before the next load-bearing use.
Sharpen the edge that you have
Leatherman’s maintenance guidance distinguishes plain edges from serrated edges. Use a sharpening method suited to the specific edge and follow the model’s instructions. A dull blade often encourages excessive force, but sharpening does not correct a bent blade, damaged lock or loose pivot; those conditions require repair or replacement.
Model examples: use features as questions, not assumptions
Product pages can show why model-by-model checking matters. The Wave+ listing includes needlenose and regular pliers, replaceable wire cutters, knives, multiple drivers and locking features for every implement except the plier head. The MP600 listing includes bluntnose pliers, replaceable cutter inserts, knives and several screwdrivers. Neither page supplies a universal safety rating, and these examples are not an independent comparison or endorsement.
| Comparison question | Wave+ listing | MP600 listing |
|---|---|---|
| Pliers identified | Needlenose and regular pliers | Bluntnose pliers |
| Cutter information | Replaceable wire cutters | Replaceable cutter inserts |
| Drivers | Multiple drivers listed | Several screwdrivers listed |
| Locking statement | Locking features listed for every implement except the plier head | Use the exact model manual for locking details |
| Material or force limits | Not stated as a universal rating on the cited product description | Not stated as a universal rating on the cited product description |
When choosing or borrowing a multi-tool, compare the implement list, lock locations, blade access while folded, cutter type and replacement parts, grip for the intended task, and the manual’s material or force limits. Those checks answer a safety question more reliably than a brand name or a photograph.
Storage, transport and legal considerations
Close every implement, wipe the tool dry and store it where children cannot reach it. A sheath can protect the tool and nearby objects, but it does not make an open blade safe; close and secure the tool before putting it in a pocket, bag or drawer.
Carry laws vary by country, state, city and the exact tool configuration. Leatherman’s European FAQ discusses the company’s interpretation of Germany’s Weapons Act §42a and explicitly notes that authorities or courts may interpret the law differently; the company says its discussion is not legal advice. That Germany-specific commentary is not a general carry rule. Check current local law for the exact multi-tool, blade length and locking arrangement, and for the location where you will carry or use it.
A pre-use checklist
- I identified the exact model and checked its current manual.
- The implement is intended for this material and task.
- The blade or driver is fully extended, and its lock is engaged if the design has one.
- My fingers are outside blade paths, pivot arcs and closing handles.
- The workpiece is stable and other people are outside the cutting or slip path.
- I am wearing eye protection where chips, wire ends or debris could fly.
- I will stop if the tool slips, folds, binds or requires force beyond the manual’s limit.
These habits address the main risks without pretending that every multi-tool has the same construction. Follow the model’s instructions first, use each implement only for its specified purpose, and substitute a dedicated tool whenever the job demands more control or force than the multi-tool can safely provide.
