Use a padded hard-shell case whose interior is slightly larger than the ROG Xbox Ally X’s maximum body size of 29.0 × 12.1 × 5.09 cm, then keep the closed case in the passenger cabin or restrained passenger compartment. Measure the fully packed setup, check the operating airline’s current cabin-bag limits, and carry the Ally X, spare batteries and power banks in the aircraft cabin rather than checked baggage.
Start with the Ally X’s actual size and battery
A case that fits the handheld without accessories may fail once a protective shell, grip, charger or dock is installed. ASUS lists the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X (RC73XA) at 29.0 × 12.1 × 2.75–5.09 cm (11.42 × 4.76 × 1.08–2.00 in) and 715 g (1.58 lb). The variable thickness reflects the body’s contoured shape, so use 5.09 cm as the relevant maximum when checking the case interior. The built-in battery is an 80 Wh, four-cell lithium-ion pack. ASUS supplies a USB-C 65 W AC adapter.

These figures describe the bare device. Measure the packed configuration you will actually travel with, including an attached shell, thumb-stick caps, grip, dock, cables and power bank. A case’s advertised exterior dimensions do not tell you whether its protected interior is deep enough.
Choose a case that protects without becoming impossible to stow
Check internal clearance first
Look for internal dimensions slightly greater than 29.0 × 12.1 × 5.09 cm before adding any accessory allowance. “Slightly greater” should mean enough space for the lining and for the zipper to close without compressing the sticks, triggers or display. If a shell or grip remains installed, measure that combination and compare it with the manufacturer’s internal measurements. Do not rely on a listing that only gives the outside length and width.

Use a rigid or semi-rigid shell
A rigid or semi-rigid exterior resists crushing in an overhead bin, under-seat area or car footwell. The lining should be padded and shaped so the console cannot move inside the case. A zipper track should not rest directly across the display. If the case has a divider, use it to keep accessories from touching the front of the handheld.
Separate hard accessories from the console
The 65 W adapter, dock and plugs can become impact points if they share the handheld’s cavity. Select a case with a separate padded charger-and-cable pocket. A loose accessory compartment is a poor choice when a dock or power bank can slide into the console during handling. Put cables in their own pouch or secure them so the connectors cannot scrape the screen.
Consider the way you will restrain it
For air travel, a handle and a size that fits your carrier’s published cabin allowance matter more than maximum accessory capacity. For driving, a handle, luggage strap loop or snug compartment gives you a way to stop the case from sliding. A very large case may offer more padding and storage but be awkward under a seat; a slim case is easier to stow but may exclude a grip, shell or charger.

A search for a “large ROG Xbox Ally X carrying case” can find suitable formats, but the name is not a fit guarantee. Before buying a hard-shell ROG Ally X travel case, compare the stated internal length, width and depth with your measured setup. Confirm whether the listed dimensions are for the usable cavity or for the exterior, and check the seller’s return terms if the product does not accommodate your installed accessories.
Prepare the packed setup before an airport trip
- Assemble the exact travel load. Install the shell, grip or screen protector you plan to leave on. Add the charger, dock, cables and power bank you will carry. Do not measure an empty case and assume the result will apply to the finished pack.
- Measure the case while closed. Record the exterior dimensions and weight of the complete case. Also measure the interior cavity and confirm that padding does not reduce the usable depth below your device’s 5.09 cm maximum.
- Check for pressure points. Close the zipper slowly. It should not push on the display, analog sticks, shoulder buttons or triggers. Shake the closed case gently; the Ally X should not rattle or collide with a dock.
- Secure small parts. Coil cables, cap exposed connectors and place loose adapters in the padded accessory pocket. Keep a power bank from sharing an unprotected space with metal objects that could bridge its terminals.
- Weigh the finished bag. The 715 g device is only part of the load. Include the case and every packed accessory when comparing the result with the airline’s cabin-bag rules.
- Review the operating carrier’s rules. Check the airline that actually operates each flight, including connecting segments. Confirm personal-item and carry-on dimensions, weight limits and any battery-specific instructions immediately before departure. A large case can exceed a personal-item limit even when it is safe to carry in the cabin.
Keep the case accessible rather than buried under clothes. Security staff may ask you to remove the handheld or another electronic device, and an overstuffed case is more likely to be dropped or left open during that process.

Bring the Ally X and lithium batteries in the aircraft cabin
Use a personal item or carry-on, not checked baggage
Place the closed case in a personal item or carry-on that complies with the operating carrier’s allowance. At the gate or security checkpoint, follow staff directions about whether it goes under the seat or into the overhead bin. If the case itself is too large for a personal-item measurement box, move the console to a compliant cabin bag only if it remains protected; do not solve a size problem by checking a bag containing the handheld or loose lithium batteries.
Apply the FAA battery rule to the accessories
FAA PackSafe states: “Power banks, spare batteries, and lithium batteries with a capacity of less than 160 Wh must remain with passengers in the aircraft cabin.” The Ally X’s built-in 80 Wh battery is below that threshold, so keep the handheld in the cabin. Any separate power bank or spare battery also belongs in the cabin, with its terminals protected against short circuit. The airline may impose stricter procedures, and international requirements can differ from domestic rules.
Protect spare-battery terminals with the original retail packaging, a dedicated battery case or individual plastic bags. Do not let loose batteries share a pocket with keys, coins, tools or other conductive objects. If your carrier asks you to gate-check a cabin bag, remove the Ally X, power bank and spare batteries first and keep them with you, following the crew’s instructions.
Do not travel with a damaged or recalled battery
Do not board with a device or battery that is swollen, punctured, leaking, unusually hot or recalled. FAA guidance says a damaged or recalled battery-powered device that could spark or generate dangerous heat must not be carried aboard unless the battery has been removed or otherwise made safe. Stop packing and contact the airline or the manufacturer if you see a bulge, case deformation, chemical odor, smoke, abnormal heat or a recall notice. Do not attempt an improvised battery removal on a sealed handheld.
Protect the case during screening and in the cabin
At security
Keep the zipper fully closed while walking through the terminal. Open it only when an officer asks, and remove the handheld using two hands. Place the case in a bin rather than directly on a conveyor belt when instructed. Keep the charger in its pocket so it cannot strike the console when the bin moves. Rules differ by airport and screening program, so follow the local officer’s direction even if another airport handled the same case differently.

Under the seat
Under-seat storage minimizes overhead-bin handling but gives you less room. Orient the case so the display is not against a rigid seat frame, and do not force it into a space that bows the shell or presses the controls. Keep ventilation openings clear and make sure nothing inside can press the power button. Do not stack a heavy bag on top of the case.

In the overhead bin
Use the overhead bin only when the carrier permits the case there. Set it flat, with the strongest side of the shell facing outward, and avoid placing heavy luggage on top. If the bin is full or the case cannot lie without pressure, ask the crew where it should go rather than wedging it into a gap. Keep the case closed throughout the flight unless you need the device and the crew permits its use.
During charging
Do not charge a hot device inside a tightly compressed case. If you use the 65 W USB-C adapter during a permitted flight, place the Ally X on a hard, ventilated surface and keep the cable clear of the aisle. Stop if the device or power bank becomes unusually hot, swells or emits an odor.
Transport the case safely in a car
Use the passenger compartment
Put the closed case on the floor behind a front seat or inside a restrained bag rather than loose in the trunk with hard luggage. A footwell keeps the case lower and reduces the distance it can travel during braking. If the vehicle has a snug center-console or seat-back compartment large enough for the case, use it only when the lid or restraint prevents movement.
Stop sliding and impact
Secure the handle or case with a seat belt, luggage strap or fitted compartment. Tighten a strap enough to stop movement without crushing the shell. Do not place the case where a seat rail, door pocket or other hard edge can repeatedly press one point. Keep the dock, charger and other dense accessories in separate padded pockets; they should not be able to hit the handheld when the car turns or stops.

Manage heat and cold
Keep the case out of direct sunlight and never leave it visible in a parked vehicle. A closed car can become dangerously hot, while winter conditions can chill the battery and display. Let the device move back toward room temperature before charging or powering it on. If condensation appears after a cold trip, leave the Ally X switched off and outside the case until the moisture has evaporated.
Reduce theft risk
A branded gaming-handheld case signals that valuable electronics may be inside. Take it with you when leaving the car, even for a short stop. If you must place it temporarily in the vehicle, hide it before arriving at the destination and use a locked compartment when available.

For frequent flights
Prioritize the smallest shell that fits the fully equipped Ally X, a padded screen-facing divider, a separate charger pocket and dimensions compatible with your carrier’s personal-item or carry-on allowance. Measure every airline in a multi-carrier itinerary; the most restrictive segment determines whether the case can stay under the seat.
For road trips
Prioritize restraint options and impact protection over maximum pocket count. A semi-rigid case that fits securely behind a front seat can be safer than a larger hard case that slides around the trunk. Keep the case closed whenever the vehicle is moving.

Measure the accessory and handheld as one object. If the combined width or depth approaches the cavity’s limit, choose the next larger case rather than compressing the controls. Confirm that the zipper path remains above the deepest part of the grip and that the accessory cannot twist against the screen.

For a dock and full charging kit
Choose a case with a dedicated, padded compartment and enough separation that the dock cannot fall onto the display. The USB-C 65 W adapter is compact, but its plug and housing still need protection from bending and impact. If the case cannot separate the dock from the console, carry the dock in another padded bag.
Fix common transport problems before departure
The case fits the device but not the charger
Do not force the charger into the handheld cavity. Move it to a padded accessory pocket or a second small pouch. A tight fit can transmit pressure through the shell and screen, and a hard adapter can become a projectile inside the case.
The case is too large for a personal-item sizer
Check whether the airline permits it as a carry-on and whether an overhead-bin space is available. If it exceeds both limits, use a smaller protective case for the Ally X and carry the dock or excess accessories separately within the allowance. Never assume a gate agent will waive the measurement.

The handheld moves when the case is shaken
Reposition the divider, add the case’s intended foam insert or choose a better-fitting case. Do not fill gaps with loose cables, clothing or hard objects that can shift into the controls. The correct result is a stable device with no pressure on the screen or sticks.
The case slides on the car floor
Move it behind a front seat, place it inside a snug bag and run a seat belt or luggage strap through the handle. Check the restraint after loading and again after the first few minutes of driving. If it still moves, change the case position rather than tightening a strap until the shell deforms.
The device is hot after travel
Remove it from the case, stop charging and place it in a shaded, ventilated location. Do not power it on again until it has cooled toward room temperature. Swelling, odor, smoke or repeated abnormal heat requires stopping use and contacting the manufacturer or airline as appropriate.
Final pre-trip checklist
- The packed case was measured, not just the empty handheld.
- Internal clearance exceeds 29.0 × 12.1 × 5.09 cm, with extra room for the installed shell or grip.
- The zipper closes without touching the display, sticks or triggers.
- The Ally X, spare batteries and power banks are in cabin baggage.
- Battery terminals are protected from contact with metal objects.
- The operating airline’s current cabin dimensions, weight limits and battery rules were checked.
- The 65 W USB-C adapter, dock and cables are separated from the handheld by padding.
- The case can be restrained in the car and will not be left visible in a parked vehicle.
- The device is not swollen, punctured, recalled or unusually hot.
For air travel, the decisive test is whether the fully packed case fits the airline’s current cabin allowance while protecting the 29.0 × 12.1 × 5.09 cm device. For a car, the decisive test is whether the closed case stays restrained, shaded and away from hard accessories. Verify carrier rules immediately before departure because individual airlines and international authorities can be more restrictive than the general FAA guidance.
