Store lithium-ion batteries in a cool, dry place at room temperature, away from sunlight, hot vehicles and anything that can burn. Use the correct charger, keep charging within 32°F (0°C) to 105°F (40°C), prevent loose terminals from touching metal, and stop using any battery that is swollen, cracked, leaking, unusually hot, noisy or emitting an odor. If a battery smokes or catches fire, leave the area and call 911 rather than trying to extinguish it.

These practices reduce the two main hazards: short circuits and uncontrolled heat. Thermal runaway can begin when a cell is damaged, defective, overheated, exposed to water or charged improperly; heat from that cell can then damage neighboring cells and make the event spread.

What thermal runaway is and why storage matters

Thermal runaway is a self-accelerating failure inside a rechargeable battery. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) describes it as a chain reaction in which heat released by one failing cell damages nearby cells. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warns that all lithium-ion batteries are capable of overheating and undergoing thermal runaway.

A cell can fail after a manufacturing defect, a drop or crush, puncture, excessive heat or cold, improper charging, water exposure or inadequate protection. Once internal materials begin reacting, temperature can rise quickly, the case can swell or crack, and flammable gas may vent. A battery fire can reignite after it appears to be out because cells may still be hot or damaged.

Safe storage therefore has four goals: limit heat, keep batteries dry and physically protected, prevent electrical shorts, and make abnormal changes easy to spot before charging or use.

Choose a safe storage location

Keep batteries cool and dry

Room temperature is the preferred storage condition for lithium-ion batteries. Keep batteries away from direct sunlight, radiators, furnaces, cooking appliances, hot cars, windows that receive strong afternoon sun and other heat sources. Do not leave a device or spare pack in a parked vehicle, where temperatures can move far outside a safe range even on a mild day.

Keep the storage area dry. Water exposure is one of the conditions identified by the FAA as a possible contributor to battery failure. Do not store a wet pack in a sealed container; isolate it from other batteries and follow the manufacturer’s damaged-battery instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Respect charging-temperature limits

USFA and NFPA guidance sets the practical charging boundaries at 32°F (0°C) and 105°F (40°C). Do not charge a battery below 32°F or above 105°F. A battery that has been in a freezing garage or a hot car should return to room temperature before you connect the charger. The limits apply to charging; they are also a useful warning against storing batteries in places with severe temperature swings.

Condition Safe practice Why it matters
Normal storage Room temperature, dry, shaded location Reduces heat stress and moisture-related damage
Charging Stay between 32°F (0°C) and 105°F (40°C) Charging outside these boundaries can damage cells or initiate failure
Vehicle or outdoor exposure Move the battery to a stable indoor location Sun and parked-car temperatures can become extreme
Combustible surroundings Keep clear of paper, clothing, fuel, solvents and other materials that burn Limits the consequences if a battery vents or ignites

Separate batteries from combustibles

Do not keep spare packs in a drawer packed with paper, clothing or chemicals, or next to a bed, sofa or other readily ignitable furnishing. A stable shelf or cabinet with clearance around the battery gives you room to inspect it and limits the chance that a failing pack immediately ignites nearby items. Do not block exits or place a battery where an overheating event could trap you between the battery and a door.

Prevent short circuits and physical damage

Protect loose terminals

Loose cells and removable battery packs are vulnerable when their positive and negative contacts can touch keys, coins, tools or another battery. A metal object across the terminals can create a high-current short, producing rapid heat.

The FAA identifies three acceptable ways to isolate terminals:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keep the battery in its original retail packaging.
  • Cover exposed terminals with nonconductive tape.
  • Use a battery case, sleeve or protective pouch designed to keep contacts separated.

Apply tape so it covers the contacts without damaging the label, and remove it carefully before installing the cell. Never carry loose cells in a pocket, purse or toolbox with metal objects.

Use a storage case appropriately

A lithium-ion battery storage case is useful when it keeps terminals from touching, resists crushing or puncture, fits the battery’s dimensions and chemistry, and lets you inspect the pack without unnecessary handling. A case, sleeve or pouch is a protective accessory, not a repair or fireproof guarantee. Do not put a swollen, leaking, hot, cracked or recalled battery into a case for long-term storage; isolating a defective pack does not make it safe.

Prevent drops, crushing and punctures

Store packs where they cannot fall from a shelf or be compressed by tools, luggage or boxes. Do not stack heavy objects on batteries or use a pack as a doorstop. Inspect the outer housing after any drop. Damage that is not obvious externally can still affect internal separators and create a delayed failure during charging.

A step-by-step storage routine

  1. Identify the battery. Note which device it belongs to, its chemistry if marked, and whether it is removable or a loose cell. Keep manufacturer labels and safety information readable.
  2. Inspect before putting it away. Look for bulging, expansion, cracks, dents, punctures, leaks, discoloration, corrosion, damaged insulation, unusual odor or residue. Listen for hissing, popping or other unexpected noise. Feel for excessive heat compared with normal operation.
  3. Stop with any warning sign. Do not charge, install, transport routinely or place a suspect battery with good batteries. Move people away, isolate the area from combustibles without touching a dangerous pack, and follow the damaged-battery guidance in the section below.
  4. Clean and dry the exterior. If the battery is sound, wipe off dirt with a dry cloth. Never immerse a battery or use liquid near its terminals.
  5. Choose a stable location. Use a cool, dry, shaded place at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, heaters, hot vehicles and combustible clutter.
  6. Isolate terminals. Leave the pack in retail packaging, apply terminal-insulating tape to exposed contacts, or place it in a correctly sized battery case, sleeve or pouch.
  7. Keep compatible items together, not electrical contacts. Store each loose cell so it cannot strike another cell or metal object. Do not mix damaged and undamaged batteries in one container.
  8. Recheck periodically. During routine household checks, look for new swelling, odor, leakage, corrosion or heat. A battery that changes while idle is not suitable for further use.

Charge batteries without creating extra heat

Use the right charger

Use the charger supplied with the device or one from a reputable supplier that is specifically compatible with the battery and device. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the connector, voltage, current and charging time. A physically compatible plug is not proof that the charger is electrically appropriate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Charge on a hard, noncombustible surface with ventilation around the device. Do not charge under a pillow, blanket or pile of clothing, where heat can accumulate. Keep the charger and cable away from water and stop if the connector, cable or battery becomes damaged.

Do not extend charging unnecessarily

Do not leave a battery charging longer than the manufacturer recommends. Remain nearby when practical, especially for high-capacity packs and devices with a history of damage or overheating. Unplug according to the instructions rather than relying on an improvised timer or an unknown automatic cutoff.

Check temperature during charging

A little warmth can be normal, but rapidly rising heat, a hot-to-touch case, swelling, odor, hissing or discoloration is not. Stop charging if any of these occur. Do not place the battery in a refrigerator, freezer, water or another improvised cooling method; a sudden temperature change and moisture can add hazards.

Warning signs and what to do

Sign Immediate response What not to do
Bulging, expansion or a case that no longer fits Stop using and charging it; keep people away and arrange manufacturer or local hazardous-battery guidance Do not press it flat, puncture it or force it back into the device
Crack, dent, puncture, leak or discoloration Stop use and isolate it from good batteries and combustibles without unnecessary handling Do not tape over structural damage or test it by charging
Unusual odor, hissing, popping or visible gas or vapor Move away immediately; if smoke or fire appears, evacuate and call 911 Do not sniff closely, open the pack or continue monitoring at close range
Rapidly increasing temperature or smoke Evacuate, close doors behind you if safe, and call 911 from outside Do not carry the battery outdoors or attempt to cool or extinguish it yourself
Fire that appears extinguished Stay out and let trained responders assess it Do not return because a battery can reignite

If a battery is hot but not smoking

Stop charging or using the device if you can do so without touching a dangerous or damaged pack. Warn others, leave the immediate area and call the manufacturer or an appropriate local hazardous-materials service for instructions. If heat continues to rise, the case swells, or you see vapor or smoke, treat it as an emergency and call 911.

If there is smoke, fire or a suspected thermal-runaway event

The U.S. Fire Administration advises: “If a lithium-ion battery fire occurs, don’t try to put it out. Evacuate and call 911 immediately.” Leave the building or vehicle, keep away from the battery and its smoke, and do not re-enter for a phone, charger or other property. Tell firefighters that a lithium-ion battery is involved and identify the device if you can do so from a safe location.

Do not rely on a small household extinguisher as a reason to approach the battery. A battery fire can involve multiple cells, release hazardous smoke and reignite after apparent extinguishment. Trained responders have the equipment and procedures to manage the remaining heat and damaged cells.

Handling swollen, damaged or recalled batteries

A swollen battery is a stop-use condition, not a cosmetic defect. Do not charge it, install it, squeeze it, puncture it, disassemble it or place it in ordinary recycling. Keep people and pets away and avoid moving it more than necessary. If it is hot, leaking, smoking or making noise, evacuate and call 911.

For a cool but visibly damaged battery, contact the device or battery manufacturer and ask for its damaged or recalled-battery procedure. Tell the collection site in advance that the battery is damaged; many ordinary retail bins accept only intact batteries. Follow any instructions about temporary isolation, transport and approved drop-off locations. Do not mail a damaged battery unless the manufacturer or carrier has explicitly provided a compliant procedure.

Use one of these channels after confirming that it accepts your specific battery and condition:

  • A local battery-recycling center.
  • A retailer collection bin that lists lithium-ion batteries as accepted.
  • A municipal household-hazardous-waste or e-waste program.
  • A scheduled community e-waste event.
  • The battery or device manufacturer, especially for recalled, swollen or otherwise damaged packs.

Before transport, ask the program whether it accepts damaged batteries, whether terminals must be taped, and how the pack should be packaged. Keep the battery out of heat and away from combustibles while you arrange drop-off. Do not assume that a program accepting ordinary rechargeable batteries also accepts a leaking or recalled pack.

Taking spare batteries on an aircraft

Air-travel rules add a short-circuit and fire-control requirement. Spare lithium-ion batteries must be protected against damage and accidental terminal contact; keep them in retail packaging, cover terminals with tape or use a battery case, sleeve or protective pouch. Spare batteries generally belong in carry-on baggage rather than checked baggage, subject to the airline and current aviation rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The FAA states that spare lithium-ion batteries over 101 watt-hours (Wh) and up to 160 Wh are limited to two per person on passenger aircraft. Batteries over 160 Wh are forbidden on passenger aircraft. Airlines may impose stricter limits, require approval or prohibit particular battery types, so check the operating airline’s current policy before traveling. The watt-hour rating is normally printed on the battery or calculated from voltage multiplied by amp-hours; do not guess when the label is missing.

Standards and labels that help you evaluate a battery

Certification or a standards reference is not a substitute for safe handling, but it can help distinguish products designed against recognized safety requirements. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission lists these voluntary standards among those relevant to lithium-ion battery products:

Standard Edition listed by CPSC How to use the information
UL 1642 6th Edition Look for the manufacturer’s documentation identifying the applicable cell or battery standard
UL 2743 2nd Edition Use the complete product documentation, not a vague “UL” claim on packaging
UL 62133 2nd Edition Verify that the marking applies to the exact battery or device model

These are voluntary standards listed by CPSC; a logo alone does not prove that a particular product was tested, that a used battery remains compliant or that a damaged pack is safe. Retain the model number and manufacturer instructions so a recall or disposal program can identify the battery correctly.

Common mistakes and safer alternatives

  • Leaving a pack in a hot car: Bring it indoors to a stable, shaded location.
  • Charging on a bed or sofa: Use a hard, clear surface with ventilation.
  • Using an unverified replacement charger: Use the supplied or specifically compatible charger.
  • Carrying loose cells with keys: Use original packaging, terminal tape or a protective case.
  • Ignoring a new bulge or odor: Stop using the battery and seek manufacturer or emergency guidance.
  • Putting batteries in household trash: Confirm a local recycling or hazardous-waste channel first.
  • Trying to save a smoking battery: Evacuate and call 911; do not approach it.
  • Assuming a case fixes damage: Treat a case as terminal and impact protection only, never as a remedy for a defective battery.

A practical decision checklist

Use this quick sequence whenever you put away, charge or transport a lithium-ion battery:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Is it cool, dry and free of swelling, cracks, leaks, discoloration, odor and unusual noise?
  2. Has it avoided drops, crushing, punctures, water and extreme temperatures?
  3. Are the charger and battery confirmed compatible, and is the charging area clear and ventilated?
  4. Will charging remain between 32°F (0°C) and 105°F (40°C), and will it stop within the manufacturer’s recommended time?
  5. Are exposed terminals isolated with original packaging, tape or a battery case?
  6. Is the storage location away from sunlight, hot vehicles and combustible clutter?
  7. If the battery is damaged or recalled, have you contacted the manufacturer or a collection program before moving it?

If the answer to any safety question is no, do not charge or use the battery until the issue is resolved through the manufacturer, an approved recycling program or emergency services.
