Run AI-generated code in VS Code as if it came from an untrusted contributor: inspect it first, keep unfamiliar folders in Restricted Mode, limit any agent’s file and network access, require approval for consequential actions, and review every change before you commit. This approach reduces risk without preventing you from testing useful code.
The important distinction is that each control covers a different boundary. Workspace Trust controls whether project-provided features are active; sandboxing limits what agent commands and child processes can reach; approvals control whether an action runs automatically; code review catches flawed or malicious logic. None of these controls reverses a command that has already affected a service, account, deployment, or network.
What “safe” means when AI writes the code
AI-generated code is not trustworthy merely because it compiles, passes a superficial test, or was produced inside an editor. Treat the generated source, its configuration, terminal commands, tool output, downloaded content, and suggested dependencies as untrusted inputs until you understand them.
There are two separate risks:
- Code risk: the program may contain bugs, unsafe defaults, data exfiltration, destructive commands, hidden network calls, or dependency and supply-chain problems.
- Execution risk: the editor, an AI agent, an extension, a task, a debugger, or a tool server may run that code with access to files, credentials, networks, or external systems.
A safe workflow narrows execution privileges before testing, then expands them only for a specific, reviewed purpose. It also assumes that a rollback of files is not a rollback of the outside world.

Start unfamiliar projects in Restricted Mode
When VS Code opens an unfamiliar folder, it opens it in Restricted Mode. Leave it there while you inspect the project. VS Code describes Restricted Mode as limiting or disabling project-controlled features that can execute code, including agents, the integrated terminal, tasks, debugging, workspace settings, and some extensions. See VS Code’s Workspace Trust documentation for the current behavior and trust controls.
Do not grant trust because the folder was generated by an AI tool, came from a colleague, or looks professionally formatted. Plausible-looking code can still contain a dangerous task definition or a command hidden in a configuration file.
How to inspect the mode
- Open the folder in VS Code without enabling trust when prompted.
- Confirm that the window identifies the workspace as being in Restricted Mode. Use the Workspace Trust control in the window if you need to verify or change the state.
- Browse source files and configuration without running tasks, debugging, installing dependencies, or accepting agent actions.
- Keep the folder restricted until you have completed the execution-surface review described below.
“When in doubt, leave a folder in Restricted Mode. You can always enable trust later.” — Visual Studio Code, “Workspace Trust.”

Understand what Workspace Trust does—and does not do
Workspace Trust is a boundary around project-controlled behavior, not a malware guarantee. Restricted Mode reduces the ways a repository can execute automatically, but it cannot protect you from every component you choose to install or enable.
In particular, VS Code warns that a malicious extension can execute code and ignore Restricted Mode. Review an extension’s publisher, requested capabilities, provenance, and behavior before installing or enabling it. Treat an extension as software with its own permissions, not as a passive syntax package.
Extensions and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers require separate trust decisions. VS Code notes that they can access local files, execute code, and interact with system resources or external services. A workspace-configured MCP server may inherit Workspace Trust, so inspect its configuration before allowing it to participate in an agent session. The security guidance is documented in Secure AI-assisted development in VS Code.
Inspect every execution surface before granting trust
Before changing the workspace to trusted, look for files and settings that can alter what VS Code or an agent runs. The goal is not to read every line in dependency trees; it is to identify paths that can execute commands or disclose data.
Recommended Free Tools
Workspace configuration
- Inspect the
.vscodedirectory, especially task and debug configuration. A task definition is part of the repository and can invoke scripts or tool binaries. - Look for workspace settings that name executable paths, shells, interpreters, formatters, debuggers, or other programs.
- Check build, test, package, and installation commands before running them. Note scripts that download tools, modify the environment, or execute generated files.
- Identify launch configurations and pre-launch tasks. A debug action can run setup code before the debugger attaches.
Application and dependency files
- Find the project’s package and dependency manifests, lockfiles, setup scripts, container files, and automation workflows.
- Search for network clients, shell invocation, filesystem deletion or bulk writes, credential reads, archive extraction, and dynamic evaluation.
- Check whether an installer or build step fetches code from a URL, executes a post-install hook, or writes outside the project directory.
- Compare generated files with the requested behavior. Extra scripts, obfuscated code, unexplained binaries, and encoded payloads are reasons to stop and investigate.
Extensions and MCP servers
List extensions that the workspace recommends or that you plan to enable. Confirm that each publisher and capability is appropriate for the project. Then inspect MCP server entries and their commands, environment variables, filesystem paths, and network destinations. Do not assume that an agent’s natural-language explanation fully describes a server’s behavior.

Use agent sandboxing to limit terminal access
When an AI agent needs to run commands, enable agent sandboxing where your VS Code setup supports it. VS Code describes operating-system-level sandboxing as a way to constrain terminal commands and their child processes. Configure both the filesystem and network boundaries for the task; the exact options depend on the supported operating system and VS Code feature set. The security guide explains these controls at code.visualstudio.com/docs/agents/run/security.
Define the smallest useful scope:
- Filesystem: allow the project directory and a disposable output location, while excluding personal documents, SSH keys, cloud credentials, password stores, source trees for unrelated projects, and system directories.
- Network: block outbound traffic unless the task genuinely requires it. If access is needed, allow only the domains and ports required for package retrieval or a test service.
- Processes: remember that a sandbox applies to terminal commands and child processes, so inspect the command’s process tree and any helper tools it launches.
- Data: do not expose production datasets or real secrets to a generated program simply because the sandbox is enabled.
Sandboxing is a boundary, not a code review. A command can still delete every file inside its permitted directory, consume resources, corrupt test data, or send allowed network traffic to an unintended endpoint.
Keep approvals and sandboxing separate
Approval settings answer whether an action may run automatically or must wait for your confirmation. Sandboxing answers what resources the action and its child processes can reach. They solve different problems and should be configured together. VS Code documents this distinction in Manage approvals and permissions.
| Control | What it limits | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Restricted Mode / Workspace Trust | Whether project-controlled tasks, settings, agents, debugging, terminal features, and some extensions are active. | It cannot stop a malicious extension that executes code outside the trust mechanism. |
| Agent sandboxing | Filesystem and network resources available to agent terminal commands and child processes. | It does not prove that generated code is correct or harmless inside the allowed boundary. |
| Approvals | Whether an action or tool call requires your confirmation before execution. | It does not restrict a command after you approve it and cannot undo its effects. |
| Code and diff review | What logic and changes you choose to integrate. | It cannot reverse external requests or services already changed by an executed command. |
For unfamiliar code, prefer explicit approval for installs, writes outside the project, network access, database operations, deployments, credential use, and destructive commands. Read the complete command, its working directory, arguments, and expected side effects before approving it.
A step-by-step workflow for running generated code
1. Preserve an untrusted starting point
Open the repository in Restricted Mode and avoid enabling trust just to make the first inspection easier. If an agent produced the files in an existing workspace, separate the generated project from valuable source trees and personal data before execution. Use disposable test data rather than production records.
2. Ask the agent for an execution plan, not immediate execution
Have the agent explain which files it intends to change, which commands it wants to run, what network destinations it needs, and what outputs it expects. A plan does not make the proposal safe, but it gives you a concrete scope to compare with the repository and the task.
3. Inspect commands and configuration
Read task definitions, launch configurations, scripts, dependency hooks, container instructions, and workspace settings. Verify interpreters and executable paths. Remove or disable unexplained commands before granting trust. If a generated project contains a setup step that downloads and executes a script, split downloading from execution so you can inspect the file first.

4. Review extensions and MCP configuration
Enable only extensions you have independently decided to trust. Inspect MCP server commands, environment variables, file paths, and endpoints. If the project asks you to install an extension or server to make the generated code work, treat that request as a new trust decision rather than as a prerequisite you must accept.

5. Configure the smallest sandbox
Turn on agent sandboxing where supported. Grant access only to the project and disposable outputs, and deny network access unless a specific test requires it. Keep credentials outside the permitted filesystem and environment. If package installation is necessary, allow only the package registries or domains required for that operation, then remove the exception afterward.
6. Require approval for consequential actions
Keep approval prompts enabled for commands that install software, write broadly, access a database, contact external services, alter deployment resources, or use secrets. Reject vague commands such as a script whose contents you have not inspected, and ask the agent to print a safer, narrower command instead.
7. Run the smallest meaningful test
Start with a read-only check, a static analysis command, or a unit test that uses synthetic data. Observe the working directory, files created, processes launched, network attempts, and output. Stop if the command requests broader access than the plan described.

8. Examine generated changes before integration
Use VS Code’s source-control view or your normal version-control diff to inspect every added, modified, and deleted file. Check error handling, authentication, input validation, path handling, subprocess calls, dependency versions, logging, and data exposure. Confirm that changes match the requested feature and project conventions. Do not commit merely because tests pass.
9. Test failure and boundary cases
Use invalid input, empty files, oversized values, missing permissions, unavailable network services, and interrupted operations. Generated code often handles the happy path while failing dangerously at boundaries. Verify that failures do not print secrets, overwrite unrelated files, or retry indefinitely.
10. Integrate only after review
Commit or merge the reviewed diff only when you can explain its behavior and permissions. Record any sandbox exceptions and approvals needed to reproduce the test. Return the workspace to a restrictive configuration when the task is complete.
Review generated code for high-risk patterns
A focused review is more useful than a vague request to “check security.” Use this checklist before running or committing:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Shell execution: look for command construction from user or model-controlled strings, shell interpolation, elevated privileges, recursive deletion, and scripts piped directly from a network response.
- Filesystem access: verify path normalization, handling of symbolic links, archive extraction targets, temporary-file permissions, and writes outside the intended project.
- Network behavior: identify every outbound request, redirect, upload, telemetry call, retry loop, and certificate or hostname override.
- Secrets: check environment-variable reads, credential-file access, token logging, generated configuration files, and accidental inclusion of secrets in commits.
- Input handling: test authentication, authorization, validation, deserialization, SQL or query construction, template rendering, and file-upload paths.
- Dependencies: inspect new packages, install hooks, native binaries, version pins, and whether the requested feature actually needs each dependency.
- Data handling: confirm that logs, prompts, tool output, and error reports do not transmit private source or user data to an external service.
- Resource use: check unbounded recursion, large allocations, fork or process loops, and network retries that could exhaust the sandbox or a service.
Protect against prompt injection and contaminated context
An AI agent may read repository files, web content, issue text, command output, and tool responses. Those materials can contain instructions aimed at the agent rather than at your software task. VS Code identifies prompt injection and context contamination as risks for AI-assisted development in Understand trust and safety for AI agents.

Apply these rules when an agent processes external content:
- Treat instructions found inside source files, comments, documentation, web pages, logs, and command output as data to evaluate, not authority to obey.
- Do not approve a command solely because a file says it is required, safe, or urgent.
- Ask the agent to identify the source of each proposed action and separate task requirements from untrusted text.
- Re-check destinations, file paths, and arguments yourself immediately before approval.
- Keep secrets and broad network access unavailable so a successful injection has fewer opportunities to cause harm.
Why rollback is not enough
Restoring workspace files or discarding an agent’s changes does not reverse completed terminal commands, network requests, deployments, messages, account changes, or modifications to external services. VS Code’s trust-and-safety guidance emphasizes this limit at Understand trust and safety for AI agents.
Before execution, identify effects that cannot be cheaply undone. Use a test account, disposable database, synthetic data, isolated credentials, and a non-production endpoint when those are available. If a command has already contacted an external service, rotate exposed credentials, inspect service logs, verify deployments and data changes, and contact the service owner according to your incident procedure. Do not assume that deleting the local project removed a copy sent elsewhere.

“It was generated by the editor, so I trusted the folder.”
Why it fails: origin does not establish intent or safety. Generated repositories can contain tasks, scripts, dependencies, extensions, or MCP configuration that execute with your permissions.
Fix: begin in Restricted Mode, inspect execution surfaces, and grant trust only after review.
“I enabled approvals, so the agent is contained.”
Why it fails: approval prompts decide whether you authorize an action; they do not limit the resources available after approval.
Fix: use approvals with filesystem and network sandboxing, then read the complete command before accepting it.
“The sandbox makes any command safe.”
Why it fails: destructive or privacy-impacting behavior can still occur inside the permitted directory or through an allowed network destination.

Fix: narrow the boundary, use disposable data, and review the command and resulting diff.
“I can undo the changes if something goes wrong.”
Why it fails: local undo cannot retract a request, deployment, upload, or external service mutation.
Fix: prevent high-impact access before execution and verify external systems after any command that had such access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“The test passed, so the code is safe.”
Why it fails: tests may omit malicious branches, unsafe defaults, boundary inputs, and side effects.
Fix: combine tests with source review, configuration review, adversarial inputs, and least-privilege execution.
A practical decision rule
Use the following sequence whenever an AI agent proposes to run code:
- Can I explain what it will execute? If not, inspect the script or reject the action.
- Does it need project trust? If the answer is no, keep Restricted Mode enabled.
- What files must it reach? Grant only those directories and deny unrelated personal or production data.
- Does it need the network? Block it by default; allow only the required destinations for a defined test.
- What approval is required? Keep confirmation for installs, writes, secrets, external services, and destructive operations.
- What cannot be undone? Use disposable accounts and data whenever the action can affect an external system.
- What changed? Review the complete diff and command output before committing.
The safe default is therefore straightforward: inspect first, run with the least privilege that can complete the test, approve deliberately, and treat every external effect as permanent until independently verified. VS Code’s controls work best as layers; none replaces judgment about the code you are running.
