If a stinger remains, scrape it away promptly with a fingernail or the edge of a card. Wash the area with soap and water, then apply a cold pack wrapped in cloth. Trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, dizziness, or vomiting after a sting may signal anaphylaxis: use the person’s prescribed epinephrine autoinjector if available and call your local emergency number.
What to do immediately after a bee sting
- Move away from the bee or the area if necessary to avoid additional stings.
- Remove any visible stinger promptly. Scrape it sideways with a fingernail or card edge. Do not delay while looking for a special tool.
- Wash the sting with soap and water.
- Apply a cold pack wrapped in cloth for local comfort. Do not place ice directly on the skin.
- Watch for symptoms beyond the sting site or problems with breathing, circulation, or consciousness.
The 2024 American Heart Association and American Red Cross first-aid guideline says removing a stinger by scraping or plucking as soon as possible can be beneficial. Healthdirect Australia and the American Academy of Dermatology also emphasize prompt removal. Their guidance differs on tweezers; scraping with a simple edge is a practical approach, but do not let the choice of tool delay removal. How to ease pain and itching
A wrapped cold pack can help with local pain. For itching, an over-the-counter oral antihistamine or topical corticosteroid may help; acetaminophen (also called paracetamol) or an NSAID may help with pain. These medicines address local symptoms, not a severe allergic reaction.
Follow the medicine label and consider whether the product is suitable for the person taking it. The sources do not establish an individual dose or whether a specific medicine is safe for every reader. Ask a pharmacist or clinician if you are unsure.

Recognize a severe allergic reaction
Symptoms that affect areas beyond the sting—or breathing, circulation, or consciousness—may indicate anaphylaxis. Warning signs include:
- Difficulty breathing, wheezing, or a feeling that the throat is closing
- Swelling of the lips, face, or throat
- Widespread hives or swelling away from the sting
- Dizziness, faintness, or collapse
- Vomiting or other symptoms beyond the sting area
If anaphylaxis is possible, use the person’s prescribed epinephrine (adrenaline) autoinjector promptly, following its instructions, and call local emergency services. The AHA/Red Cross guideline identifies intramuscular epinephrine as the mainstay of immediate anaphylaxis treatment and recommends activating emergency response for anaphylaxis after a bee, wasp, or hornet sting. Do not rely on an antihistamine instead of emergency treatment. AHA/Red Cross 2024 First Aid Guidelines.

When to seek medical care
Arrange medical assessment for a sting in the eye area, mouth, or throat; multiple stings; or a history of a serious allergic reaction to stings. Seek emergency help immediately for suspected anaphylaxis. Guidance on thresholds and care pathways varies by location, so use your local emergency system rather than assuming a particular country’s emergency number.
