To receive gifted bitcoin, you need either a Bitcoin receiving address generated by a wallet you control or a Bitcoin deposit address supplied by a custodial service. Send only that public receiving information to the giver—never your recovery phrase, private key, PIN, or wallet password. Before the giver broadcasts the payment, compare the entire address with the one shown in your wallet, then wait for blockchain confirmations rather than treating a “pending” notification as final.

After the transfer settles, choose storage deliberately. Self-custody gives you control of the keys but also makes you responsible for backup and recovery. A custodian can be easier to use, but you depend on its security, solvency, account-recovery process, and withdrawal rules. The wallet does not physically contain coins; it manages the keys that control bitcoin recorded on Bitcoin’s public network.

What you need before someone sends the gift

A Bitcoin payment requires a destination address. The giver uses that address to create a transaction, and the network records the result. You do not have to buy bitcoin first. You do have to decide where the bitcoin will be credited and who will control the keys.

Choose between self-custody and a custodian

Question Self-custody wallet Custodial account
Who controls the private keys? You control them through the wallet and its recovery method. The service controls the keys on your behalf.
What happens if a device is lost? You restore the wallet using its documented recovery phrase or backup. You use the provider’s account-recovery process, subject to its rules.
Main dependency Your ability to secure the phrase, device and backups. The provider’s security, solvency, availability and withdrawal policy.
Setup effort More responsibility during setup and recovery. Usually simpler account access, often with identity and security checks.
Costs Receiving itself does not incur a Bitcoin network fee; later transactions may have network or wallet fees. The service may charge deposit, withdrawal, conversion or other account fees.
Privacy Transactions remain publicly visible and can become linked to your identity. The provider can associate deposits and withdrawals with your account and may impose monitoring or reporting.

Neither model is automatically right for every recipient. A small gift may be manageable in a reputable wallet app if you can protect its recovery information. Someone holding meaningful savings may prefer an offline device and a carefully tested recovery plan. A custodian may suit a person who cannot safely manage keys, provided that person understands the provider’s operational and withdrawal risks.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Step 1: Set up the place that will receive the bitcoin

Self-custody setup

  1. Obtain wallet software from a source you can verify. Use the wallet developer’s documented download and installation process. Check that you are installing the intended Bitcoin wallet, not a lookalike application.
  2. Initialize the wallet on a private device. Follow its setup flow and record the recovery phrase exactly as displayed. Do not let another person read it, and do not enter it into a website, form or chat.
  3. Complete the wallet’s backup or recovery check. Wallets differ in how they verify a backup. Follow the application’s own instructions rather than assuming every wallet uses the same seed format or restore process.
  4. Set a strong device and wallet password. A password protects access to the device or application; it is not a replacement for the recovery phrase.
  5. Open the wallet’s Receive screen. Generate a new Bitcoin address or payment request for this gift. Copy the address exactly or display its QR code for the giver to scan.

The wallet is not a vault containing coins. It stores or derives the credentials needed to authorize transactions involving bitcoin recorded on the blockchain. Anyone who obtains the corresponding recovery phrase or private key can generally restore and control that wallet.

Custodial setup

Create an account only through the custodian’s verified service, complete any required identity checks, and enable the strongest available sign-in protection. Open the Bitcoin deposit or receive screen and confirm that the asset is Bitcoin on the Bitcoin network. Copy the deposit address shown there. Do not assume an address for another asset or network will work for this gift.

Read the service’s deposit, withdrawal, account-freeze and recovery policies before accepting a large amount. A displayed balance represents the custodian’s record of your claim; it does not mean you hold the private keys directly.

Bitcoin address versus recovery phrase

These are different kinds of information with opposite security requirements.

Information Purpose Can you share it?
Receiving address Tells the network where the giver should pay. Yes, with the person sending the gift. Treat each address as intended for its specific payment.
Payment QR or request Encodes a receiving address and, sometimes, an amount or label. Yes, after checking that it was generated by your wallet.
Private key Authorizes spending from a particular key or address. No. Anyone with it may spend the associated funds.
Recovery phrase Recreates the wallet’s key set during restoration. No. It can give control over the wallet’s funds.
PIN or wallet password Helps unlock a device or application. No. Support should not need it.

Bitcoin.org’s scam guidance puts the rule plainly: “no legitimate person, business, or support team will ever ask for your seed phrase or private key.” A request for those secrets is a fraud warning, even if the requester claims to be helping with a delayed payment.

Step 2: Send the correct receiving information

Use the wallet’s current Receive function instead of copying an address from an old transaction or a contact list. Bitcoin.org advises that addresses should ideally be used only once, which improves privacy and reduces confusion about which payment belongs to which request.

Give the sender the full address or the wallet-generated QR code through a channel where it cannot be silently replaced. A receiving address is public information, but public does not mean “safe to alter.” Check the first and last characters as a quick visual check, then use a method that lets the sender compare the complete string.

There is no Bitcoin network fee charged merely for receiving, according to Bitcoin.org’s individual-user guidance. This does not rule out a custodian’s deposit, conversion or withdrawal fee, nor does it mean spending the bitcoin later will be free.

Step 3: Verify the address before the sender broadcasts

Bitcoin payments are difficult to reverse once sent. The safest verification is an independent comparison immediately before the sender selects Send:

  1. You display the address directly from your wallet’s Receive screen or payment request.
  2. The sender opens the destination field in the send screen and compares the entire address, character by character or with a trusted scan.
  3. Both of you confirm that the asset and network are Bitcoin, the amount is correct, and any displayed fee is understood.
  4. The sender broadcasts only after the comparison succeeds.

Do not rely solely on the first and last few characters. Address-poisoning scams place transactions to lookalike addresses in histories so that a hurried user copies the wrong destination later. Start from your wallet’s current receive screen instead of an unfamiliar historical transfer.

Requests that should stop the transaction

  • Someone asks you to send back part of the gift before you can use it.
  • You are told to pay a “release,” “verification” or “tax” fee to unlock the incoming bitcoin.
  • A supposed support agent asks for your recovery phrase, private key, PIN or password.
  • The sender insists on urgency and refuses a complete address check.

A legitimate transfer does not require you to disclose wallet secrets. If the giver says the payment was sent to the wrong address, verify independently in your wallet and on a reputable block explorer before taking any action.

Step 4: Confirm that the bitcoin arrived

Pending is not confirmed

After broadcast, your wallet may show the transaction as pending or unconfirmed. That means the transaction has been seen but has not yet been included in a block. A confirmation is counted when a block includes the transaction; each later block adds another confirmation.

Bitcoin.org’s general explainer says a first confirmation often arrives in about 10 to 60 minutes. Its user guidance also stresses that block timing is probabilistic: there is no guaranteed minimum or maximum delay, and a transaction with low fee priority can wait longer. Treat the range as an undated educational estimate, not a promise.

How to check the transaction

  1. Open the wallet’s transaction details and confirm that the destination is one of your addresses and that the amount is correct.
  2. Note the transaction ID (TXID) if the wallet provides one.
  3. If the wallet’s status is unclear, look up the TXID in a reputable Bitcoin block explorer and compare the address, amount and confirmation count.
  4. Wait for additional confirmations when the value or your risk tolerance warrants it.

Bitcoin.org’s vocabulary guidance says one confirmation may be considered sufficient for a low-value transaction, while higher-value transfers may warrant six or more. Its separate user guidance describes six as a minimum recommendation for high-value transfers. These are Bitcoin.org’s risk-based guidelines, not a universal rule imposed by every wallet, merchant or custodian. Follow any stricter requirement attached to the service you intend to use.

Step 5: Store the gift and protect recovery

Protect the recovery phrase offline

Write the phrase using the wallet’s documented method and store it where it is private and protected from theft, fire, water and accidental disposal. Do not photograph it, email it, save it in an unencrypted cloud note, paste it into a website, or keep the only copy on the device that holds the wallet.

Bitcoin.org recommends secure backups and multiple secure locations so one incident does not destroy the only recovery copy. If a backup must be exposed to a network, encrypt it first; encryption reduces exposure but cannot defeat every form of malware or keylogging. Keep the phrase separate from a device PIN or application password so losing one does not automatically reveal everything.

Understand recovery before you need it

Wallets can differ in seed format, address derivation and restore behavior. Follow the selected wallet’s recovery instructions and keep a written record of the wallet name and relevant setup details without recording secrets in an unsafe place. A recovery plan should answer where the phrase is stored, who can access it if you are incapacitated, and how you would recognize a successful restore.

Use an offline device for savings when appropriate

A hardware wallet is an optional offline approach for money you do not expect to spend frequently. Bitcoin.org describes hardware wallets as “the best balance between very high security and ease of use.” That is a general characterization, not a guarantee that any device is invulnerable. You still need an authentic purchase channel, current firmware, a private setup environment and a tested backup. Compare devices by Bitcoin support, address and network features, recovery process, independent security documentation and usability rather than by appearance alone.

For a modest gift, a well-maintained wallet app may be reasonable if the amount, device security and recovery discipline match your risk tolerance. Consider moving a larger or long-term holding to an offline setup only after you understand how to receive, back up and restore it.

Self-custody and custodial storage: practical trade-offs

When self-custody is a fit

  • You want direct control and do not want a provider to approve withdrawals.
  • You can keep a recovery phrase private and maintain resilient backups.
  • You are willing to learn the wallet’s address, fee and recovery behavior.
  • You accept that losing the phrase may mean losing access permanently.

When a custodian may be simpler

  • You are not prepared to secure and recover keys yourself.
  • You value account-based access across devices and accept provider dependence.
  • You have reviewed withdrawal limits, fees, identity requirements and outage procedures.
  • You have enabled strong multi-factor authentication and understand how account recovery works.

In either case, Bitcoin transactions remain visible on a public ledger. Reusing addresses or combining activity can make payments easier to associate with your identity, so do not promise anonymity from either a wallet or a custodian.

Common problems and safe responses

The sender says the transaction is stuck

Check whether it is merely unconfirmed, and inspect the fee priority and transaction details in the wallet or a block explorer. Do not pay an unsolicited person to “unlock” it or reveal your recovery phrase. Confirmation timing is probabilistic, so a delay alone does not prove theft.

The wallet shows a payment but the balance is unavailable

Distinguish an unconfirmed incoming transaction from a confirmed balance. Some wallets or custodians impose their own confirmation requirements before funds can be spent or withdrawn. Read that service’s policy and wait for the stated threshold.

You may have exposed the recovery phrase

Assume the wallet is compromised. If you still control the wallet and can act safely, create a new wallet from a trusted installation, record its new recovery information offline, and transfer funds to a new address. Do not use the exposed phrase again. If you cannot safely assess the situation, seek qualified technical help without giving the helper the phrase.

You sent the wrong address

Bitcoin transfers are generally irreversible. Contact the recipient only through an independently verified channel and do not trust a stranger who claims they can recover the funds for an upfront fee. A custodian may have a formal internal process, but it cannot guarantee recovery from an incorrect external address.

Fees, privacy and tax considerations

Receiving bitcoin itself does not create a Bitcoin network charge under Bitcoin.org’s individual-user guidance. Fees can appear when the sender broadcasts, when you later spend, or when a custodian converts or withdraws funds. The exact amount depends on the transaction, network conditions and the service’s fee schedule.

Tax treatment for a gifted bitcoin depends on your country, state or province, the giver’s circumstances, the value and date of the gift, and what you later do with it. No universal tax conclusion applies. Keep records of the date received, amount, transaction ID, value in your local currency at receipt, and later transfers, then consult a qualified local tax professional.

A final receiving checklist

  • Choose self-custody or a custodian before asking for the payment.
  • Install or access the wallet through a verified source.
  • Back up the wallet using its documented recovery method.
  • Generate a fresh Bitcoin receiving address or payment request.
  • Share only the address or QR code—not the phrase, private key, PIN or password.
  • Have the sender compare the complete destination before broadcasting.
  • Check the transaction details and confirmation count; do not equate pending with final.
  • Store the recovery phrase offline, privately and in a way that survives a single disaster.
  • Review provider withdrawal rules, fees and account recovery if using a custodian.
  • Keep transaction and valuation records for your jurisdiction’s tax requirements.
