Install an Arch User Repository (AUR) package only after treating its PKGBUILD as untrusted Bash code. Read the PKGBUILD and every referenced file, verify source integrity, build with makepkg as a normal user, inspect the resulting package, and review the complete diff before every update. The AUR is a community collection of build recipes, not an extension of Arch Linux’s official signed-binary repository.

What an AUR package is—and what it is not

An AUR entry normally supplies a PKGBUILD, metadata, and sometimes patches or an install script. makepkg reads that Bash file, downloads and validates its sources, runs the declared build functions, and creates a local .pkg.tar.zst artifact. pacman can then install that local artifact and manage its dependencies.

This is a different trust model from installing a package built and signed for an official Arch repository. An AUR maintainer controls the recipe you download, while the upstream project controls the source releases referenced by that recipe. A successful build does not prove that the recipe is benign, and installing the resulting file does not turn it into an official Arch-signed package.

Arch’s current warning matters here. On 2026-06-12, the project said it was experiencing “a high volume of malicious package adoptions and updates in the Arch User Repository” and encouraged users to review all PKGBUILD and install-script changes when updating. Treat that as an operating rule, not as a reason to assume every AUR package is malicious.

Decide whether you need the AUR

Before reviewing a recipe, check whether the software is already available in an official repository or from the upstream project in a form that meets your needs. An AUR build adds a review and maintenance burden. If an official package provides the same release and integration, it generally gives you a simpler trust and update path.

When several AUR entries provide the same software, compare them deliberately rather than choosing the first search result.

Comparison point What to look for
Upstream provenance The source domain, project name, and version should match the upstream project’s own documentation.
Maintainer continuity A long, coherent maintenance history is easier to assess than a newly adopted recipe with unexplained changes.
Release tracking A fixed release recipe and a VCS recipe have different update and reproducibility trade-offs.
Integrity controls Prefer checksums or upstream signatures that can be independently matched; understand every deliberate SKIP.
Script complexity Extra patches, helper functions, downloaded tools, and install hooks create more code to audit.
Dependency footprint Unexpected interpreters, network clients, or privileged services deserve an explanation.
Rebuildability You should be able to rebuild from the displayed sources and understand any generated files.

Establish the package’s provenance

Inspect the AUR entry

Open the package page and read the maintainer history, comments, flagged status, and linked source repository. Confirm that the project name, release version, and source domain agree with upstream documentation. A package that was recently adopted, renamed, or substantially changed deserves a fresh full review even if you used it safely in the past.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comments are leads, not proof. A comment reporting a broken build may be useful, but it does not establish that a replacement source or a new maintainer is trustworthy. Base your decision on the files currently displayed and on evidence from the upstream project.

Keep a local, identifiable work area

Use a dedicated directory for the package and retain the PKGBUILD, downloaded sources, build output, and logs until you understand the installed result. Avoid mixing unrelated recipes in one directory. This makes it possible to identify which files were reviewed and to compare the next revision with the one you built.

Read the entire PKGBUILD before running it

A PKGBUILD is Bash. It is not a passive manifest, and syntax that looks like ordinary metadata can invoke commands or alter files. Read variable assignments and every function present in the file. The Arch manual identifies five possible build functions: prepare(), build(), check(), package(), and split-package functions.

Understand the fields that define the build

Field Review question
pkgname, pkgver, pkgrel, arch Do the name, version, release revision, and supported architecture describe the software you intended to build?
license Does the declared license match the upstream project?
depends Are runtime dependencies necessary and expected for this application?
makedepends Are build-only tools limited to what the upstream build requires?
checkdepends Do test dependencies correspond to the project’s test suite?
optdepends Are optional integrations explained rather than used to pull in unrelated software?
conflicts, provides, replaces Could the package remove, supersede, or satisfy another package in a way you did not expect?

The Arch PKGBUILD(5) manual for Pacman 7.1.0, dated 2026-05-06, states that the mandatory fields for a minimally functional PKGBUILD are pkgname, pkgver, pkgrel, and arch. Those fields are necessary, but they are not a safety review.

Search for dangerous or unexplained commands

Look for commands that download additional content after the declared sources are fetched, pipe remote content directly to a shell, or execute files generated during the build. Pay attention to writes outside the expected $srcdir and $pkgdir areas, changes to users or services, credential access, and any invocation of sudo. A command can be legitimate in a build, but its purpose and destination should be clear from the upstream project.

Do not stop reading at the first screen or at the package() function. Shell substitutions, loops, sourced files, and split-package functions can contain executable behavior too. If a line is difficult to explain, pause and resolve it from upstream documentation before building.

Inspect every referenced file

Review patches, helper scripts, local source files, and any file named by the recipe. The source=() array can rename a downloaded file or use a VCS fragment, so inspect the actual mapping rather than assuming the filename tells the whole story.

Also inspect an optional install=... file. Pacman can execute package-specific pre-install, post-install, upgrade, and removal hooks from that file. Such hooks may be required for integration, but they can also create users, enable services, modify configuration, or run commands at installation time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Validate sources, checksums, and signatures

Match every source to an expected upstream location

Review each entry in source=(), including renamed sources and VCS fragments. The domain should be the project’s legitimate release or source host, and the requested version should correspond to the package metadata. Be suspicious of an unrelated download domain, an opaque redirect, or a script fetched in addition to the documented project sources.

Check checksum arrays

Compare sha256sums or another integrity array with values published by the upstream project whenever possible. The checksum must correspond to the exact source file and version you intend to build. Values generated with makepkg -g are conveniences, not independent evidence; the Arch manual cautions that generated values should be checked against developer-provided values.

A SKIP entry means that source is not checksum-verified. Treat it as a deliberate loss of integrity checking. Find out why it is present—for example, a source that changes by design—and decide whether the remaining provenance and signature checks are sufficient. Do not replace a failed checksum with SKIP merely to make a build continue.

Verify detached signatures and accepted keys

A source ending in .sig, .sign, or .asc is treated by makepkg as a PGP signature. When the recipe declares validpgpkeys, makepkg restricts accepted signatures to the listed fingerprints. Verify that the fingerprint belongs to the upstream developer or release process and that the signed file is the source you are building.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A signature confirms control of a signing key; it does not prove that the PKGBUILD itself is honest. Review the recipe and its install hooks separately, and consider whether the key identity and release process are documented by upstream.

Build without root privileges

Use a normal, dedicated user account and a controlled working directory. Arch documents that PKGBUILDs can contain arbitrary commands and that building as root is unsafe. makepkg refuses to run as root for this reason. Do not work around that refusal with a force option or by invoking a shell as root.

Safe build procedure

  1. Finish the review first. Confirm provenance, read the PKGBUILD and referenced files, and examine sources, checksums, signatures, metadata, and dependencies.
  2. Use a clean working directory. Keep the recipe, source files, output, and logs together so you can audit what was built.
  3. Run the dependency-aware build. Execute makepkg --syncdeps as your normal user. This asks pacman to install the dependencies needed by the recipe before building.
  4. Watch the output. Unexpected downloads, network destinations, privilege requests, filesystem writes, or commands unrelated to the upstream build are reasons to stop and investigate.
  5. Do not bypass failed validation reflexively. A checksum, signature, or test failure may indicate a changed or compromised source. Resolve the discrepancy from upstream information before proceeding.
  6. Retain the artifact and logs. Keep the resulting .pkg.tar.zst and the build record until you have inspected and tested the installation.

If a build fails, first determine whether the recipe, dependency set, source archive, or upstream project changed. Editing out checks, deleting validation entries, or running the build with elevated privileges can conceal the very problem you need to diagnose.

Install the local artifact and inspect its contents

After a successful build, install the local package with makepkg --install or install the specific artifact with pacman -U package.pkg.tar.zst. These commands install what you built; they do not confer official-repository status on the package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review before accepting system changes

  • Read the package file list and metadata.
  • Pay special attention to files under /etc, systemd units, package hooks, and setuid or setgid binaries.
  • Re-read the .INSTALL behavior and identify any pre-install, post-install, upgrade, or removal action.
  • Check that installed services, users, permissions, and configuration changes match the upstream project’s documented requirements.
  • Keep the build directory and logs so you can trace a file or behavior back to the recipe that created it.

If the installed file set or service behavior is broader than the software requires, stop before enabling it. Remove the package through your normal package-management process and investigate the recipe and upstream documentation rather than assuming the extra behavior is harmless.

Understand what pacman does and does not verify

For an official repository package, Arch’s repository signing and package-management systems provide a trust path tied to Arch’s build infrastructure. A locally built AUR package follows a different path: you reviewed a community recipe, makepkg fetched and validated the declared sources, and you installed the artifact it produced. The default local-file policy does not transform that artifact into an official signed package.

Pacman can manage the installed files and dependencies, but it cannot infer whether a maintainer inserted an unsafe command into a PKGBUILD or install script. Your review of the recipe, source provenance, integrity controls, and resulting file list remains essential.

Common warning signs and the right response

The recipe suddenly changes its source domain

Stop and compare the new domain with upstream release documentation. Confirm the project’s explanation before accepting the change; do not rely only on a changed checksum.

A checksum fails

Do not add SKIP automatically. Determine whether upstream replaced the archive, the package version is wrong, or the downloaded file is not the intended source. Update the recipe only when the new value is independently confirmed.

A signature cannot be verified

Check the signing key fingerprint and whether the upstream project documents a key rotation. A missing or untrusted key is a reason to pause, not to suppress signature validation.

The build asks for root or invokes sudo

Stop and explain why the command exists. Building as root is unsafe, and a recipe that needs privilege during compilation deserves particularly close scrutiny. A package may legitimately install privileged files later, but that should occur through the package-installation workflow and be visible in the resulting file list and hooks.

The recipe downloads and executes an additional script

Identify the script’s origin, contents, and purpose. Prefer a source that is declared, versioned, and integrity-checked. A command that pipes remote content into a shell removes useful review and reproducibility boundaries.

The package adds an unexpected service or user

Inspect the install script, systemd units, hooks, and metadata. Compare the behavior with upstream documentation and decide whether the service is necessary for the software you intended to install.

A repeatable checklist

  • Confirm that an AUR package is actually necessary.
  • Read the AUR entry’s maintainer history, comments, flagged status, and source repository.
  • Match project name, version, and source domains with upstream documentation.
  • Read the complete PKGBUILD as Bash, including all build and split-package functions.
  • Inspect patches, helper files, VCS fragments, and the optional install=... file.
  • Look for extra downloads, shell pipelines, writes outside $srcdir/$pkgdir, credential access, user or service changes, and sudo.
  • Verify every source URL, checksum, detached signature, and validpgpkeys entry.
  • Treat each SKIP checksum as an explicit integrity limitation.
  • Review runtime, build, test, optional, conflict, provide, and replacement dependencies.
  • Build in a dedicated directory as a normal user with makepkg --syncdeps.
  • Investigate validation or build failures instead of bypassing them.
  • Install only the reviewed local artifact with makepkg --install or pacman -U.
  • Inspect metadata, file lists, configuration files, services, hooks, permissions, and install behavior.
  • Keep the recipe, artifact, and logs until the package is understood.
  • Repeat the complete diff review before every update.

Bottom line

Safe AUR use is a code-review workflow. Establish where the recipe and sources come from, read every executable surface, verify integrity controls, build unprivileged, inspect what the package installs, and repeat the review for every update. If you cannot explain a command, source, key, dependency, or install hook, do not build the package until you can.
