Keep people and pets away, do not disturb the bees, and leave a safely located cluster alone. A hanging swarm is often temporary and may move within hours or several days. If it is beside a doorway, playground, walkway, or another unavoidable route, contact a local beekeeper who collects swarms; a county extension office or beekeeping association can help you find one. Never spray, hose, swat, shake, or try to capture the swarm yourself.

What you are looking at: a temporary swarm, not necessarily a nest

A honeybee swarm forms when part of a colony leaves with a queen to establish a new nest. The bees gather in a compact cluster on a branch, shrub, fence, or another object while scout bees search for a suitable permanent site. Iowa State University Extension describes this as a normal stage of colony reproduction, and the University of Georgia explains that a cluster may remain in place while the scouts make their choice (Iowa State University Extension; University of Georgia Cooperative Extension).

While clustered, the bees are gathered around and protecting the queen as they wait. Some bees may circle the outside of the mass or fly out and return. That activity does not tell you exactly when they will leave, and it is not a reason to approach for a closer inspection.

Clustered swarms are often less defensive than bees protecting an established nest, but “less defensive” is not the same as harmless. A person who pokes, shakes, sprays, or otherwise provokes the cluster can trigger stinging. Keep a generous distance and treat every honeybee aggregation as capable of defending itself.

The first response: a safe sequence

  1. Move people away calmly. Bring children indoors or to another part of the property. Keep dogs, cats, and other animals away from the cluster. Do not gather around it to take a closer look or photograph it.
  2. Leave the bees an escape route. Do not block the branch, shrub, eave, or other place where the cluster is resting. Avoid standing beneath it or passing close by.
  3. Do not touch or attack the cluster. Do not poke it with a stick, throw objects, shake the support, swat at individual bees, or use a hose. Do not apply insecticide, soapy water, or a homemade mixture. Jon Zawislak of the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture advises: “Leave it alone — don’t throw rocks at it or squirt it with a garden hose or spray it with an insecticide” (University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture, April 16, 2026).
  4. Assess the location from a distance. If everyone can avoid the area and the bees are simply clustered in the open, the safest action is usually to wait. If the cluster is next to a doorway, driveway, playground, public walkway, or another place people must use, arrange professional help instead of trying to move it.
  5. Call the right local contact when necessary. Ask a beekeeper who specifically collects swarms whether they serve your area. Your county extension office or a local beekeeping association may provide referrals. Confirm availability, timing, access requirements, and any fee directly with the provider.

Why a swarm may look alarming but remain stationary

A swarm is in transit between a parent colony and a new nesting site. Scout bees fan out to inspect possible cavities and return to the cluster; the group waits until a site is selected. That pause can make the bees appear settled on a limb or fence even though they are not building a nest there. The cluster may shift position or depart without warning when the scouts reach a decision.

Because the queen and many workers are concentrated together, a hanging swarm can look much larger than the number of bees you might see entering a small opening. Size alone does not establish whether the group is dangerous, how long it will remain, or whether it will eventually enter a building. Distance and noninterference are safer than trying to estimate those details visually.

Should you wait or arrange removal?

Use the location and the bees’ behavior—not a guessed timetable—to choose between monitoring and calling for help. Clemson Cooperative Extension says a swarm may stay for a few hours, a day, or several days, depending on conditions; no fixed departure time applies to every swarm (Clemson Cooperative Extension).

Situation Safer choice What to do
Cluster is in a remote part of the yard that can be avoided Leave it undisturbed Keep people and pets out of the area and observe only from a safe distance. Allow scouts time to select a nest site.
Cluster is beside a door, gate, path, play area, schoolyard, or public route Arrange professional collection Restrict access and contact a local swarm-collecting beekeeper. Use an extension office or beekeeping association for a referral if needed.
Bees are repeatedly entering a wall, roof edge, eave, chimney, tree cavity, or other opening Treat it as a possible established colony Keep away and contact a specialist experienced in structural bee removal. Do not seal the opening or spray into it.
Bees are actively pursuing or stinging people Escape immediately Run to a vehicle, shed, or building, close the door, and call emergency services if someone is being attacked.

How to judge whether your yard can safely be avoided

Look at the route people and animals normally take, not just the cluster’s distance from the house. A swarm at the far end of a fenced yard may be manageable if the gate can remain closed. One at a front entrance, beside a mailbox, over a driveway, or near a child’s play equipment is a practical risk even if no one has been stung. Delivery workers, neighbors, gardeners, and visitors may not know to avoid it.

Do not move the cluster’s support, place a ladder nearby, or create a barrier that requires walking close to the bees. Instead, close a door or gate from the safe side, post a warning for household members, and reroute activity. If you cannot maintain a reliable buffer, call for collection rather than waiting for an uncertain departure.

How to tell a hanging swarm from bees in a structure

Signs of a temporary hanging swarm

  • A dense, visible mass is suspended from a branch, shrub, fence, play equipment, or another exposed surface.
  • The cluster appears to be resting rather than using a crack or hole as an entrance.
  • Individual bees may fly around the cluster while other bees remain packed together.

This appearance is consistent with scouts searching for a permanent nest site. It does not guarantee that the bees will leave quickly or that they cannot sting.

Signs of a colony establishing itself in a cavity

  • Bees repeatedly enter and leave one opening in a wall, soffit, roof edge, chimney, utility box, tree, or other cavity.
  • Traffic continues at the same entrance instead of the bees remaining in one exposed cluster.
  • The opening is part of a building or another location where honeycomb and stored food could accumulate out of sight.

A colony inside a structure requires a different response from an accessible swarm. A beekeeper may be able to collect an exposed cluster, while structural removal generally calls for a specialist who can address the cavity and any necessary repairs. Plugging an entrance can trap bees inside and force them into the building; spraying into a cavity can also create additional hazards. Arrange an inspection rather than applying advice intended for a hanging swarm.

What a swarm collector needs to know

When you call, give the provider enough information to decide whether the job is a simple collection or a structural removal. You can gather these details without approaching the bees:

  • Exact location: for example, a low branch, fence post, shed wall, porch eave, or public-side sidewalk.
  • Height and access: estimate whether the cluster is reachable from the ground and whether a gate or locked area is involved.
  • Appearance: describe a single exposed cluster versus bees using a hole or wall opening.
  • People and animals nearby: mention children, pets, neighbors, public access, or anyone who cannot avoid the area.
  • Recent behavior: say whether the bees have remained clustered, are entering a cavity, or have already chased or stung someone.
  • Photos, if safe: take a picture only from a distance that does not alter the bees’ behavior. Do not walk under the cluster or use a drone.

Ask whether the person collects honeybee swarms, whether the location is within the service area, how soon an appointment is possible, and whether a fee applies. Availability and charges vary locally, so do not assume that collection is free or that a beekeeper can respond immediately. If the provider says the bees are in a wall or other cavity, ask whether a structural-removal specialist is needed instead.

What not to do—and why it can make the situation worse

Do not spray chemicals

Insecticide can kill bees without solving the problem of bees in a wall or another cavity. Spraying a cluster can provoke defensive flight and expose people, pets, and anyone nearby to stings and chemical contact. University extension guidance specifically warns against insecticide and other attempts to force a swarm away (University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture).

Do not use water, smoke, or improvised repellents

A hose stream can break apart the cluster and provoke the bees; it does not provide controlled removal. Homemade sprays and other repellents have no dependable safety advantage in a homeowner setting. Avoid experimenting with any substance while people or animals are nearby.

Do not attempt a do-it-yourself capture

Swarm-catching methods shown in beekeeping instructions assume protective clothing, suitable equipment, experience reading bee behavior, and a plan for transporting the bees. A homeowner who lacks that preparation can knock the cluster down, trap bees in an unsafe place, or turn a manageable situation into an attack. Keep the area clear and leave collection to someone equipped for it.

If the bees begin attacking

A disturbed swarm can change from a stationary cluster to moving, defensive bees. If bees are actively attacking, prioritize distance and shelter over identifying the species or protecting property.

  1. Run directly to shelter. Enter a closed vehicle, shed, or house as quickly as possible. Pull clothing over your face while moving, but do not stop to swat at bees.
  2. Close the opening behind you. Once inside, shut doors and windows. Do not remain outside to watch the swarm.
  3. Do not jump into water. Bees can wait near the surface, and leaving the water can expose you to stings again.
  4. Help others only after you are sheltered. Direct children and pets toward an enclosed space without standing in the flight path.
  5. Call 911 if someone is being attacked. UC San Diego County’s bee-safety guidance identifies an ongoing attack as an emergency requiring 911 (University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources, San Diego County).

After a sting, watch for signs of a serious allergic reaction such as trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, widespread hives, dizziness, or collapse. Use a prescribed epinephrine auto-injector immediately if the person has one and follow emergency medical instructions. Call 911 for a suspected anaphylactic reaction or any rapidly worsening symptoms.

Regional caution: Africanized honey bees

Advice about a calm-looking cluster is not universal across every region. Africanized honey bees occur in parts of the southern United States and can be more defensive, especially when a colony is disturbed. The University of Georgia Bee Program advises contacting county Extension or the state agriculture department in areas where Africanized bees may be present rather than assuming an ordinary beekeeper is the appropriate first contact (University of Georgia Bee Program).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are unsure whether that guidance applies where you live, keep the same distance precautions and ask your county extension office which agency or qualified professional handles local swarms. Do not try to identify the bees by approaching them.

Keeping the area safe while you wait

  • Close or reroute access to the affected part of the yard using doors, gates, or a temporary barrier that keeps people well away without touching the bees’ support.
  • Tell household members, visitors, gardeners, and delivery workers about the cluster and the alternate route.
  • Keep pets indoors or on a leash away from the area.
  • Do not mow, trim, prune, pressure-wash, or perform repairs beside the cluster.
  • Recheck only from a protected distance. A cluster that has dispersed may have moved into a nearby cavity, so look for repeated bee traffic rather than assuming the issue is over.

If the bees move on, avoid disturbing the former resting place. If they begin using a crack or cavity, switch to the structural-removal approach described above. Do not plug the opening simply because the visible cluster is gone; have a specialist determine whether bees remain inside.

Common questions

Will the swarm leave by itself?

It may. Scouts can locate a nest site in a few hours, a day, or several days, and weather and local conditions affect the timing. Because no universal timetable exists, continue restricting access until the bees have clearly left and no cavity traffic has developed.

Are honeybee swarms safe to walk past?

No. A clustered swarm may be less defensive than an established colony, but walking close, passing underneath, or disturbing it creates unnecessary risk. Use another route until it has moved or been professionally collected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I seal the hole after the bees disappear?

Not if bees were entering a wall, eave, or other cavity. The opening may lead to an established colony, and sealing it without removal can trap bees or redirect them into the building. Have a specialist assess the cavity first.

Who removes a swarm from a public place?

Start with a local beekeeper who collects swarms, your county extension office, or a beekeeping association. If the bees are attacking or people cannot escape the area safely, call 911 rather than waiting for routine collection.

Does a beekeeper always remove a swarm for free?

No universal fee or free-service rule applies. Confirm the provider’s availability and charge before arranging the visit.

What if I cannot tell whether it is a swarm or a colony?

Do not approach to find out. Describe whether the bees are hanging in an exposed cluster or repeatedly using an opening, and send a distant photograph only if it can be taken safely. A beekeeper or extension referral can determine whether ordinary swarm collection or structural removal is appropriate.

A simple decision checklist

  • Cluster in an avoidable location? Keep everyone away and wait without disturbing it.
  • Near unavoidable foot traffic? Restrict access and call a swarm-collecting beekeeper or local extension referral.
  • Bees entering a structure? Treat it as a possible colony and request specialist removal; do not plug or spray the entrance.
  • Active attack? Run to a closed shelter, do not swat or enter water, and call 911 if anyone is being attacked.
  • Uncertain local bee risk? Ask county Extension or the state agriculture department for region-specific guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can a honeybee swarm stay in one place?

Clemson Cooperative Extension notes that a swarm may remain for a few hours, a day, or several days. Weather and local conditions affect the timing, so keep the area closed until the bees leave or are collected.

What should I do if the swarm is beside my front door?

Use another entrance, keep everyone away, and contact a beekeeper who collects swarms. A county extension office or local beekeeping association can provide a referral. Do not spray or try to move the cluster.

How is a swarm different from bees in my wall?

A swarm is usually a visible cluster hanging on an exposed object. Bees repeatedly entering and leaving a wall, eave, roof edge, chimney, or tree opening may be establishing a colony and need a structural-removal specialist.

Can I remove a honeybee swarm myself?

DIY capture is unsafe without protective clothing, equipment, experience, and a transport plan. Keep people and pets away and leave collection to a qualified local beekeeper or other specialist.

What should I do if bees chase someone?

Run to a closed vehicle, shed, or building, shut the opening, and do not swat or jump into water. Call 911 if someone is being actively attacked, and seek emergency care for signs of a serious allergic reaction.

The Bottom Line

Keep your distance, protect children and pets, and never spray, hose, shake, or swat a honeybee swarm. Leave a safely located cluster alone; call a local swarm-collecting beekeeper or extension referral when people cannot avoid it. Treat bees entering a cavity as a possible established colony, and seek shelter and emergency help if an attack begins.
