On a Google Pixel, the supported way to stop a pre-installed app is Settings > Apps > All apps, open the app, and tap Disable when that control is offered. Google says some system apps cannot be deleted, although most can be disabled. Apps you installed yourself follow a different route: in the Play Store, open your profile, choose Manage apps and devices > Manage, select the app, and tap Uninstall.
Disabling an app, uninstalling it, and removing its Home-screen icon are not interchangeable. Use the least destructive option that solves your problem, leave essential services alone, and check the labels on your own Pixel because Android version and model can change the available controls.
What each option actually does

Google’s Pixel Help guidance summarizes the boundary clearly: “You can’t delete some system apps that came pre-installed on your Pixel phone. But you can disable most system apps.” If Disable or Uninstall is missing, do not assume that an online package-removal command is appropriate for your phone.

Before disabling anything
Confirm what kind of app it is
Open the app’s entry and look at the available controls. A pre-installed app commonly has Disable; an app you added may show Uninstall. If you only see a Home-screen shortcut, removing that shortcut does not change the installation.

Check your Android version and labels
Google’s support pages note that steps vary by Android version and device. The names above are the current Pixel labels described by Google, but a particular release may place a setting in a slightly different menu. Use the Settings search box for “Apps,” “All apps,” or the app name if your layout differs. The Play Store uninstall sequence documented by Google includes steps that work only on Android 13 and later.
Record anything you may need later
Before disabling an app, note whether you use its notifications, widgets, accounts, or files. Disabling can stop those functions. If the app stores information locally, follow its own export or backup instructions first. Do not rely on a factory reset as a backup method; a reset deletes the phone’s data.
Do not expect a fixed storage or speed gain
Disabling or uninstalling an app can change what runs, but Google’s guidance does not promise a particular amount of recovered storage, longer battery life, or faster performance. The result depends on the app, its data, and how your Pixel uses it. Treat those benefits as something to verify on your own phone rather than as a guaranteed outcome.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then All apps.
- Choose the pre-installed app you want to stop.
- Tap Disable, if the control is available, and confirm the on-screen warning.
The app’s entry should now identify it as disabled, and its normal launch and background activity should stop. The exact confirmation wording can vary by Android release.
When Disable is not available
An unavailable button is a boundary, not an invitation to force removal. Google says some pre-installed system apps cannot be deleted, and its general guidance does not provide a universal “safe to disable” list for every Pixel model, Android release, and user configuration. Leave the app enabled unless you understand its role and have a supported way to change it.
Do not treat a generic list of package names or an ADB recipe as an official safety guarantee. A component that appears unnecessary may provide authentication, calling, setup, emergency, update, accessibility, or another function that your configuration relies on.
Test the phone after each change
After disabling one app, try the features you depend on: calls, messaging, sign-in, notifications, Bluetooth, camera features, accessibility tools, and any connected accounts. Testing immediately makes it easier to identify the cause of a problem. If something stops working, return to the same app page and tap Enable before changing anything else.

- Open the Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Choose Manage apps and devices, then Manage.
- Select the app you want to remove.
- Tap Uninstall and confirm.
Google says deleted or disabled apps can be added back to the phone. If you purchased an app, you can reinstall it without purchasing it again through the same account. Availability of particular buttons can depend on the Android version and how the app was installed.
Uninstall versus Remove
Pixel battery guidance uses these terms deliberately. Uninstall removes the app from the phone. Remove takes the app off the Home screen only. If you want to keep the app’s data and notifications while clearing visual clutter, use the Home-screen removal action instead of uninstalling.
What to check before uninstalling
Look for saved drafts, downloaded files, locally stored settings, or an account that has not synchronized. If the app offers an export or backup option, use it first. Removing an app is easy to reverse when it is available in your Play Store library, but app-specific local data may not return simply by reinstalling.

Start with the app’s function
Ask what would stop working if the app disappeared. An app tied to a feature you actively use should remain enabled. If you cannot identify the app’s purpose, search its name in Settings and review its permissions and associated services before changing it.
Protect core services
Google warns that force-stopping some essential apps or services can make the phone work incorrectly. Google Play services is integrated with Android; Google specifically states that it cannot be force-stopped or uninstalled. Do not use force-stop as a substitute for disabling an ordinary app, and do not attempt to remove Play services.
Change one app at a time
Disable only one nonessential app, then use the phone normally. If a feature fails, you will know which change to reverse. Keep a short note of the app name and the date so you can undo several changes in the correct order.
Prefer a narrower fix when possible
If your concern is a permission, notification, or background activity rather than the app itself, adjust that setting instead of disabling a whole component. Permission Manager can limit access, and battery controls can show whether background use is actually significant. A narrower change preserves more of the phone’s built-in functionality.

- Open Settings and go to Battery.
- Open Battery usage to see which apps are consuming power.
- Open the relevant app’s battery or background-use controls.
- Keep the app’s setting at Optimized unless you have a specific reason to change it.
Labels can vary, but the objective is the same: identify an actual high-use app rather than disabling an unrelated system component. If the app is not using meaningful power, disabling it may not address the problem.
Allow time after setup or an update
Google says battery optimization can take a few weeks to fully adjust after setting up a new Pixel or completing a factory reset. Software updates can also cause temporary extra drain while software is downloaded and optimized. In those situations, immediate disabling is unlikely to tell you whether the phone has stabilized.
Use diagnostics when available
Google provides battery diagnostics on Pixel 6 and later. Run those checks before making broad system changes when your model supports them. A diagnostic result gives you a more specific starting point than a general list of pre-installed apps.
Review security, permissions, and unused apps
Run Play Protect
Play Protect checks apps and devices for harmful behavior. It can warn about, disable, or remove an app it identifies as harmful. Open the Play Store’s Play Protect area and review any warning before deciding that an app is merely unwanted.
Inspect access to personal information
Pixel includes a Privacy Dashboard and Permission manager. Open Settings and search for either name if you do not see it immediately. Review which apps accessed sensitive permissions, then adjust a permission or uninstall the app when the access is not justified. Permission review is often safer than disabling an entire system component.
Understand automatic handling of unused apps
Android may optimize apps that have not been used for a long time by deleting temporary files, revoking permissions, stopping background activity, and stopping notifications. In the app’s settings, review the Pause app activity if unused option. Turn it off for an app that must retain its permissions or notifications; leave it on when automatic cleanup is desirable.
How to restore a disabled or deleted app
Re-enable a pre-installed app
Return to Settings > Apps > All apps, select the disabled app, and tap Enable when that control appears. If you cannot find the entry, use Settings search for the app name and check whether the app list is filtering disabled apps.
Reinstall an app you uninstalled
Open the Play Store, tap your profile icon, choose Manage apps and devices > Manage, and switch the list to apps that are not installed if that filter is shown. Select the app and tap Install. Use the same Google account that originally obtained a purchased app so you are not prompted to buy it again.

Restore before escalating
If a feature stopped working after a change, re-enable or reinstall the last app you changed before trying more invasive troubleshooting. Reversing the known change preserves your data and is easier to diagnose than resetting the entire phone.
When a factory reset is appropriate
Google identifies a factory data reset as an advanced troubleshooting step, not an ordinary method of removing pre-installed apps. A reset removes all phone data and apps. Back up photos, contacts, messages, authenticator data, and other important information first, and make sure you know the account credentials needed to set the phone up again.
Use a reset only when the underlying problem justifies erasing the device and simpler measures—reviewing battery use, permissions, Play Protect results, and recent app changes—have not solved it. A reset will not create a supported way to delete system apps that Google does not allow you to remove.

Common situations and the safest response
“I only want the icon gone.”
Use the Home-screen Remove action. It hides the shortcut while leaving the app installed and available in the app list.
“The app has no Disable button.”
Leave it enabled unless you have a documented, app-specific reason and a supported alternative. The absence of the button usually means the system treats the component as protected or required.
“The phone became unreliable after I force-stopped something.”
Reopen the app’s Settings entry and use Enable if it was disabled. Avoid force-stopping additional services while troubleshooting. If the affected function is a core Android feature, restore the last change first and then review Google’s support guidance for that feature.
“Battery drain started after setup, a reset, or an update.”
Check Battery usage, keep ordinary apps optimized, and allow the optimization period to complete. Updates can temporarily increase drain during download and software optimization.

A safe decision sequence
- Identify whether the app is pre-installed or user-installed.
- Decide whether you need removal or only a cleaner Home screen.
- Review the app’s purpose, permissions, battery use, and notifications.
- For a pre-installed app, use Disable only when offered and when the app is clearly nonessential to your use.
- For a user-installed app, use the Play Store’s Uninstall flow.
- Change one app at a time and test the phone.
- If a problem appears, re-enable or reinstall the last app changed.
- Reserve factory reset for advanced troubleshooting after a complete backup.

Can I uninstall every pre-installed app on a Google Pixel?
