The safest way to clean temporary files is to use Windows’ own storage controls, inspect each category, and remove only items you understand. Open Settings > System > Storage, review Temporary files or Cleanup recommendations, and be especially cautious with Downloads, cloud-stored content, and Previous Windows installation(s). The last item is not ordinary cache data: deleting it removes your ability to return to the earlier Windows version and cannot be undone.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 expose similar tools, but labels and screen layouts vary by build. The workflow below keeps automated cleanup, manual review, and personal-file management separate so you can free space without deleting files you still need.
What Windows calls temporary files
Temporary files are data Windows or an application creates for short-term work, updates, installation tasks, thumbnails, logs, and other maintenance jobs. Some can be deleted safely after Windows lists them for removal, but the storage screen can also show items that are not disposable caches.
- Temporary categories: Windows presents these as removable items in the Temporary files or Cleanup recommendations views.
- Personal files: Documents, photos, videos, project folders, and files in Downloads may be valuable even when Windows reports that they occupy substantial space.
- Cloud-provider content: Files synchronized with a cloud service can have separate settings for removing local copies or making them online-only. Those settings are not the same as deleting an expendable cache.
- Previous Windows installation(s): A prior Windows version retained for recovery. Removing it sacrifices the rollback option and is irreversible.
Read the category name, description, and amount shown by Windows before checking a box. A large number does not by itself mean the data is safe to remove.

Use this safe sequence before deleting anything
- Open Settings > System > Storage and identify which drive and categories are consuming space.
- Open Temporary files or Cleanup recommendations and wait for Windows to calculate the available cleanup.
- Expand or inspect the individual categories. Select only items whose purpose and consequences you understand.
- Leave Downloads, cloud-content options, and Previous Windows installation(s) unselected until you have made a separate decision about them.
- Confirm the cleanup, let Windows finish, and return to Storage to check the result.
This sequence gives you a manual review even if you later enable Storage Sense automation. It also prevents a low-disk-space warning from pushing you into deleting personal data in a hurry.
Inspect storage usage in Settings first
Settings is the best starting point because it shows the categories Windows has identified rather than asking you to guess which folders are disposable.
- Select Start, open Settings, choose System, and select Storage. The same path is used in Windows 10 and Windows 11, although wording and layout can differ.
- Check the drive summary. Storage Sense primarily manages the system drive, which is usually C:. If you have additional drives, inspect their storage separately before assuming the system-drive cleanup will address them.
- Select Temporary files when it is listed. On some builds, Windows also presents Cleanup recommendations, which groups cleanup choices and may identify large or unused files and unused applications.
- Read the amount Windows says each category can free. Treat that number as an estimate for the selected items, not as a promise of a particular performance improvement.
Cleanup recommendations can include large files, unused applications, or other suggestions that are not temporary files. Open the details and decide whether each item is disposable, should be moved, or should remain in place.
Remove selected items from Temporary files
When the category list has loaded, use the checkboxes as a review list rather than selecting everything automatically.
Review each category
- Read the category description and inspect its size.
- Keep any category whose purpose is unclear until you can verify what it contains.
- Remember that a category can be large because it contains files needed for a current task, update, or recovery process.
- Do not treat a category as safe merely because its name includes the word “temporary.” The decision should come from Windows’ description and your own need for the files.
Confirm the cleanup
- Select only the categories you intend to remove.
- Choose the button Windows provides to remove or clean the selected files.
- Allow the operation to complete without shutting down the computer.
- Reopen Settings > System > Storage and verify that the intended category changed. If the total still looks high, inspect the remaining categories instead of repeating a blanket deletion.
Windows may show slightly different labels or combine categories differently between builds. Follow the description on your own screen rather than relying on a screenshot from another release.

Understand the two categories that need extra caution
Downloads
Storage Sense does not manage Downloads by default. If you later change Storage Sense settings to include Downloads, Windows will use the rule you select there; it will not know whether a downloaded installer, tax document, photo, or project archive is still important to you.
Before removing anything from Downloads, open the folder in File Explorer and identify the files individually. Move files you need to a known folder or another drive, and delete only files you can replace or no longer need. If you do not want automated handling, leave the Downloads option disabled.

Cloud synchronization can expose settings that remove local copies while retaining an online copy or otherwise make content online-only. That behavior can save local disk space, but it changes how the files are available when you are offline and may be governed by the cloud provider’s own synchronization rules.
Read the wording of the setting before enabling it. Confirm which account and folders it affects, whether an internet connection will be required later, and whether the files are already synchronized. Do not enable cloud cleanup simply because the category is large.
Storage Sense: useful automation with a defined scope
Storage Sense is Windows’ automated storage feature. Microsoft documents it for Windows 10 and Windows 11. With its default behavior, it can run when the device is low on disk space and remove unnecessary temporary files. It works on the system drive, normally C:. Recycle Bin cleanup is also enabled by default after a period.

Microsoft says Storage Sense is off by default, although Windows may enable handling of selected temporary files when the device is running low on space. Because settings can vary by build, check the current state instead of assuming automation is active or inactive.

- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Select Storage Sense.
- Read the current status and every available cleanup option before changing anything.
- If you enable it, keep the default temporary-file behavior only if it matches your needs.
- Inspect separate controls for Recycle Bin, Downloads, and cloud-provider content. Leave personal-file options off unless you have deliberately chosen the rule and understand its effect.
Storage Sense is appropriate when you want Windows to handle routine temporary-file maintenance without repeatedly opening the cleanup page. It is not a substitute for reviewing personal files, large files, unused applications, or a previous Windows installation.
Cleanup recommendations: review suggestions beyond caches
On supported Windows builds, Cleanup recommendations appears within Storage settings. It can surface temporary-file categories, but it can also identify large or unused files and unused applications. Those suggestions may reclaim more space, yet they require a different decision from deleting a cache.
Use recommendations as a triage list
- Open each recommendation and inspect the files or application before selecting it.
- For a large personal file, decide whether to keep it, move it, or delete it; do not assume Windows’ size ranking means it is unnecessary.
- For an unused application, confirm that you have installation media, account access, or settings needed to reinstall it before removing it.
- Return to the Temporary files section when your goal is specifically temporary-file cleanup.
This separation keeps a storage review from turning into an accidental uninstall or personal-file purge.
Disk Cleanup: the manual fallback
Disk Cleanup is a built-in Windows utility Microsoft documents as an option when Storage Sense is unavailable. It presents selectable categories of temporary and system files instead of relying on automatic rules.

- Open Start and search for Disk Cleanup.
- Launch the utility and choose the drive Windows asks you to examine, normally the system drive.
- Review every listed file type and the amount associated with it.
- Select only the categories you recognize and intend to remove.
- Confirm the cleanup and wait for Windows to finish.
Disk Cleanup is useful when you want a direct, manual selection screen or when Storage Sense is not offered on the device. It does not change the rule for personal data: a file is not safe to delete merely because the utility lists it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Previous Windows installation(s) is a rollback decision
The Previous Windows installation(s) entry represents files Windows can use to return to an earlier Windows version. It is not ordinary temporary data.
Deleting it removes the files required for that rollback. Microsoft states that the deletion cannot be undone. Leave the category untouched while you are testing a recent upgrade, troubleshooting compatibility, or otherwise may need to return to the prior version.
When removal may be reasonable
Consider removing the previous installation only after the current Windows version is working properly, you have no reason to use the rollback path, and you accept that the earlier version will no longer be available through those files. Make the choice in the Temporary files or Disk Cleanup screen only after reading the warning Windows displays.

When to leave it alone
- You upgraded recently and are still checking drivers, applications, or hardware.
- You are investigating a problem that began immediately after the upgrade.
- You are unsure whether the listed files are the only recovery path available.
If any of those conditions apply, preserve the category and reclaim space elsewhere first.

When personal files, not temporary data, are using the space
If Storage shows that documents, photos, videos, or other personal files are the main cause of low space, temporary-file cleanup will not solve the underlying problem. Microsoft suggests moving personal files you want to retain to external storage such as a USB drive or SD card.
Move retained files safely
- Connect the external drive and make sure Windows recognizes it.
- Create a clearly named destination folder.
- Copy the files rather than immediately deleting the originals.
- Open several copied files from the external drive to confirm that the transfer worked.
- After checking the copy, remove the originals from the system drive only if you need the space.
- Empty the Recycle Bin only when you are certain the originals are no longer needed.
External storage is optional and separate from temporary-file removal. You do not need to buy storage to use Temporary files, Cleanup recommendations, Storage Sense, or Disk Cleanup.
Which built-in tool should you use?
| Tool | Review style | Scope | When it fits | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Temporary files in Storage | Manual category selection | Storage categories shown for the selected system view | You want to inspect and remove specific temporary items now | Read categories before selecting; personal and recovery-related entries may also appear |
| Cleanup recommendations | Manual recommendations | Temporary files plus possible large files, unused applications, and other suggestions | You need a broader storage review | Not every recommendation is a temporary file |
| Storage Sense | Automatic cleanup with configurable controls | System drive, usually C: | You want Windows to handle routine temporary files when space is low | Downloads and cloud-provider files are not managed by default; review any setting that enables them |
| Disk Cleanup | Manual category selection | Selected drive and the file types the utility lists | Storage Sense is unavailable or you prefer a traditional utility | Confirm each file type instead of selecting blindly |
| External USB drive or SD card | Manual file move | Personal files you choose to transfer | Personal data, rather than temporary files, is consuming space | Verify copied files before deleting originals |
Common situations and the safest response
Storage Sense is missing
Use the manual Temporary files or Cleanup recommendations view if it is available. If Storage Sense is not available on your build, Microsoft documents Disk Cleanup as the fallback for selecting temporary and system-file categories.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The cleanup estimate is smaller than expected
Inspect the other categories in Storage. The largest consumer may be a personal folder, an unused application, or a previous Windows installation rather than removable temporary data. Do not select unrelated categories just to reach a target number.
Windows lists Downloads as a cleanup option
Pause and inspect the folder. Storage Sense does not manage Downloads by default, so an enabled Downloads rule is a deliberate change. Keep important files, move them, or leave the setting disabled.
A cloud folder appears to offer space savings
Read whether the action deletes local copies or makes files online-only. Confirm that synchronization has completed and that you can access the files when offline if that matters to you.
You may need to undo a recent upgrade
Do not delete Previous Windows installation(s). The files support the rollback path, and Microsoft says removing them cannot be undone.
You still need more space after temporary cleanup
Use Storage’s category view to locate large personal files or unused applications. Move files you want to keep to external storage, or make a separate, deliberate decision about applications and other large items. Temporary-file cleanup is not intended to replace that storage-management work.
Quick Recap
Final safety checklist
- Started in Settings > System > Storage and checked the correct drive.
- Read each selected category and its estimated reclaimable space.
- Reviewed Downloads and cloud-content controls separately.
- Left Previous Windows installation(s) alone unless the rollback decision was intentional.
- Used Disk Cleanup only when manual selection was preferable or Storage Sense was unavailable.
- Moved personal files to external storage only after verifying the copies.
