Yes. A single Ubuntu LTS VPS can host WordPress with PHP-FPM and MySQL, alongside a Node.js application and MongoDB, when traffic and data volumes are modest. The reliable pattern is to expose only Nginx on ports 80 and 443, send WordPress requests to PHP-FPM, proxy Node.js to a loopback port such as 127.0.0.1:3000, and keep both databases private.
This arrangement is compact and inexpensive to operate, but it creates one failure domain: every service competes for the VPS’s CPU, memory, storage I/O and kernel. Use separate Unix and database accounts, systemd supervision, planned patching, off-server backups and restore drills before treating the host as production-ready.

Use Ubuntu LTS on a 64-bit VPS. Nginx owns the public network interfaces and terminates HTTPS. A WordPress hostname is handled by a PHP-FPM pool, while a separate hostname or URL path is reverse-proxied to a Node.js process listening only on loopback. MySQL and MongoDB should likewise listen on local sockets or loopback unless a documented private-network requirement exists.

Run WordPress and the Node application under different non-root service accounts. Give each database its own user with only the permissions it needs. This limits the damage from a compromised plugin, application dependency or leaked credential.

Versions and prerequisites
Start from a currently supported Ubuntu LTS release and record every major version in deployment notes. WordPress’s current requirements guidance (2026) recommends PHP 8.3 or newer, MariaDB 10.11 or newer or MySQL 8.0 or newer, and HTTPS. It recommends Apache or Nginx and warns that legacy PHP and database releases are end of life. The WordPress advanced administration documentation, updated December 17, 2025, also lists PHP, MySQL or MariaDB, HTTPS and shell or equivalent access as installation prerequisites.
- Use a 64-bit operating system. MongoDB 8.0’s Ubuntu guide lists 20.04, 22.04 and 24.04 64-bit releases as supported targets.
- Choose a supported Node.js release line and pin its major version for each application. Do not allow an unattended upgrade to change a production major version without a test and rollback plan.
- Create a sudo-enabled administrator, then use root only for tasks that require it.
- Have DNS records ready for the WordPress and Node.js hostnames, and plan certificates before opening the site to users.
- Keep application secrets in files outside the web root with restrictive permissions.
How much VPS capacity is required?
There is no universal RAM or CPU number that guarantees a successful combined deployment. The requirement depends on traffic, WordPress plugins, media volume, PHP-FPM worker count, Node.js concurrency, MongoDB indexes, MySQL buffer usage, backup retention and the recovery time you can accept.

All five services share the same memory pool. A burst of PHP-FPM workers, a large MySQL query, a Node.js heap increase and MongoDB’s cache can exhaust RAM together. Begin with conservative worker and connection limits, then measure memory pressure, CPU saturation, disk latency and swap activity under realistic load. Add swap only as an emergency cushion; it is not a substitute for physical RAM. If the provider supports separate volumes, keep high-churn application data and backup staging away from the live root disk.
Plan a move to separate hosts when one workload repeatedly starves another, when database I/O affects web latency, when maintenance must occur without taking every application offline, or when the required recovery boundary is smaller than the VPS’s single failure domain.
Step-by-step deployment
1. Provision Ubuntu and lock down administration
- Deploy a supported Ubuntu LTS image on a 64-bit VPS.
- Create a named administrator with sudo privileges and test a second SSH session before disabling the initial account.
- Prefer SSH keys over passwords. Restrict SSH at the provider firewall and host firewall to trusted source addresses where practical.
- Apply updates, reboot if the kernel requires it, and verify the running version before installing application software.
- Write down the intended hostnames, service users, data directories, package versions and rollback contact information.
Do not run WordPress, Node.js, MySQL or MongoDB as root. A separate account for each application makes ownership and audit trails understandable and prevents one service from writing into another service’s files.
2. Configure the firewall before installing applications
Allow SSH only from a trusted source when possible, plus TCP 80 and 443 for web traffic. Do not expose TCP 3306 (MySQL) or TCP 27017 (MongoDB) to the public internet. If an administrator later needs database access, use an SSH tunnel or a private network rather than a worldwide firewall rule.

After changing firewall rules, test both an allowed SSH connection and an external web request. Keep a provider console or out-of-band recovery path available in case an SSH rule is too restrictive.
3. Install Nginx and PHP-FPM for WordPress
Install Nginx, the PHP-FPM package matching the PHP version you selected, and the PHP extensions required by WordPress and your chosen plugins. Common requirements include the MySQL driver, XML, cURL, multibyte string, ZIP and image-processing support; confirm plugin-specific requirements before finalizing the package list.
Enable the Nginx and PHP-FPM services with systemd. Locate the actual FPM socket under /run/php/ rather than copying a socket name from a different PHP release. In the WordPress server block, set the document root to a dedicated directory, route index.php through the matching FPM socket, and deny direct access to sensitive files such as configuration backups.
A typical request flow is:
- Nginx receives the request on port 80 or 443.
- Static files are served directly from the WordPress document root.
- PHP requests are passed to the selected PHP-FPM socket.
- PHP-FPM connects to MySQL over its local socket or loopback address.
Check the Nginx configuration before every reload and reload only after the syntax test succeeds. Keep the WordPress root separate from the Node application’s source and build directories.

4. Install and harden MySQL
Ubuntu documents installation with:
sudo apt install mysql-serverCheck the service through systemd and review its configuration under /etc/mysql/. Run the distribution’s hardening flow, remove anonymous accounts and test databases, and disable remote administrative access unless a specific private-network design requires it.
Create a dedicated database and least-privilege user for WordPress. Grant that account access only to the WordPress database, use a long randomly generated password, and keep the credentials outside the web root. Do not reuse the MySQL administrative account in wp-config.php. Keep MySQL local unless another trusted private host must connect; any remote exception should be limited by interface and firewall source.

5. Install WordPress in its own web root
Obtain the current WordPress package from WordPress.org, verify that the download completed correctly, and unpack it into a directory dedicated to the WordPress site. Set ownership so the web process can write only to directories that genuinely need writes, such as uploads; avoid making the entire application tree writable by the web server.
Point the Nginx server block at this directory, create the database credentials file with restrictive permissions, and complete the browser installer over HTTPS. Immediately remove any temporary installation files, choose a unique administrator account name, enable automatic security updates where your change policy permits, and review every plugin before activation.

Install Node.js and npm using the release method selected for the project. Pin the supported major version and record it in the deployment notes. Place source code and build artifacts outside the WordPress web root. A production deployment should install exactly the lockfile’s dependency versions, build in a controlled step, and keep secrets in an environment file readable only by the Node service account.
Configure the application to listen on loopback, for example:
127.0.0.1:3000Do not publish that port directly. A systemd unit for the application should define its working directory, non-root User, environment file, restart policy and a bounded log destination. After enabling the unit, inspect its status and recent journal entries, then test the loopback endpoint before adding Nginx.
Keep the Node process model in mind: Node.js uses a single process with non-blocking I/O. Long CPU-bound work can block requests, so move heavy jobs to a worker process or separate host if monitoring shows event-loop delays.

7. Install and secure MongoDB
Install MongoDB from MongoDB Inc.’s official mongodb-org repository rather than mixing packages from unrelated repositories. The MongoDB 8.0 Ubuntu instructions support Ubuntu 20.04, 22.04 and 24.04 64-bit releases. Enable and start mongod, then create an application-specific database user.
MongoDB’s default bindIp is 127.0.0.1, which permits connections only from the same machine. Keep that setting for a single-VPS deployment. In the runtime configuration, net.bindIp controls listening interfaces and security.authorization: enabled requires authenticated access.
If a separate application host is introduced later, bind MongoDB only to a private interface, restrict the firewall to that host’s address, enable authorization, and use TLS where appropriate. Never expose an unauthenticated MongoDB listener on a public address. MongoDB’s documentation explicitly warns that a publicly accessible binding must be secured before it is enabled.
8. Put Nginx in front of Node.js
Add a second Nginx server block, or a carefully isolated location in an existing block, for the Node hostname or path. Proxy requests to http://127.0.0.1:3000. Forward the original host and client information, preserve the HTTP protocol, and configure the connection headers required by your framework. WebSocket applications need an upgrade and connection-header configuration in addition to ordinary HTTP proxying.
Terminate TLS at Nginx and redirect plain HTTP to HTTPS after the certificate is working. Keep the Node port private so access control, request logging and certificate handling remain centralized at the reverse proxy.
9. Add certificates and verify renewal
Use an automated certificate renewal process supported by your Ubuntu and Nginx setup. Do not assume renewal works because the first certificate was issued: perform a renewal dry run, confirm that Nginx reloads successfully, and monitor certificate expiry. Test both hostnames over HTTPS, including redirects, static assets, WordPress admin pages, Node API calls and WebSocket endpoints if the application uses them.

10. Back up, monitor and document
Back up WordPress files, the MySQL database, the MongoDB database, and Nginx and systemd configuration. Store copies off the VPS; a backup on the same root disk does not protect against disk loss or provider failure. Define retention and encryption rules, then restore each backup on a separate host and record the exact recovery steps.
Monitor service health, memory pressure, disk utilization and latency, failed SSH logins, certificate expiry, backup freshness, PHP-FPM saturation, MySQL errors, MongoDB availability and Node.js restart counts. Rotate logs so a verbose application cannot consume the data volume. Schedule patch windows for Ubuntu, Nginx, PHP, WordPress, Node.js dependencies, MySQL and MongoDB instead of allowing an unattended major-version change during peak traffic.

- Expose only SSH, HTTP and HTTPS publicly; keep MySQL and MongoDB private.
- Use separate Unix users and separate database users for WordPress and Node.js.
- Store environment files and database credentials outside web roots with restrictive permissions.
- Patch the operating system, web stack, CMS, dependencies and databases on a planned schedule.
- Use HTTPS everywhere and verify automated certificate renewal.
- Use SSH tunnels or a private network for database administration instead of opening database ports.
- Review WordPress plugins and Node.js dependencies for maintenance status before deployment.
Troubleshooting common failures
The site returns a 502 Bad Gateway
Check whether PHP-FPM or the Node systemd unit is running, confirm that Nginx points to the correct PHP socket or loopback port, and inspect the Nginx error log and service journal. A PHP version change commonly leaves an old socket path in the server block. A Node crash loop usually indicates a missing environment variable, failed dependency installation or an application binding to a different address.
WordPress shows a database connection error
Verify the database name, username and password in the WordPress configuration, confirm that MySQL is active, and test a local connection with the WordPress database user. Check that the account is permitted from the host’s local address and that MySQL has not been changed to listen only on an unexpected interface.
The Node application cannot reach MongoDB
Confirm that mongod is active, that the application uses the correct loopback address and port, and that the MongoDB user has authorization on the intended database. If authorization was enabled after development, update the connection string with credentials rather than weakening the server’s security settings.

The VPS runs out of memory
Identify which service is consuming memory before changing limits. Reduce excessive PHP-FPM workers, investigate unbounded Node.js jobs, review MySQL queries and buffer settings, and check MongoDB indexes and cache behavior. Temporary swap can prevent an immediate crash, but sustained pressure requires reducing workload or moving a service to another host.
Backups exist but restoration fails
Treat an untested backup as an assumption, not a recovery plan. Restore WordPress files and its database together, restore MongoDB separately, rebuild the Nginx and systemd configuration, and document missing secrets or DNS changes discovered during the drill.
When one VPS is no longer the right boundary
One VPS is operationally simple and cost-efficient for modest traffic, but every service shares its failure domain. Compare alternatives using the dimensions that affect your workload:

Latency between hosts, private-network availability, support quality, geographic placement, backup responsibility and total monthly cost all belong in the decision. A managed MongoDB offering such as MongoDB Atlas removes installation overhead, but you still need to configure authentication, network access, application credentials and restore procedures.
