Run the WordPress web tier—Nginx, PHP-FPM, and the WordPress files—inside a Firejail sandbox, while keeping the database in a separate protected environment. Give the jail only the document root, configuration, PHP-FPM socket, logs, temporary directories, and network routes that the site actually needs. Firejail’s namespaces and seccomp-bpf reduce what a compromised web process can see or do, but the profile must be adapted and tested for your Linux distribution.
The reliable way to deploy this is to treat the jail as a service boundary, not as a single command. Inventory the site, create a profile from Firejail’s template or firejail --build, connect the web jail to a controlled bridge network, then test administration, uploads, updates, cron, and recovery before removing any permission that was not required.

Firejail is a SUID program that limits untrusted applications with Linux namespaces and seccomp-bpf. A normal sandbox gets separate mount, PID, and UTS namespaces. Major system directories are mounted read-only, while /home and /tmp are writable by default unless a profile changes those rules.
For WordPress, the useful boundary is the web tier. Nginx receives HTTP requests, PHP-FPM executes PHP, and the WordPress code and uploads live in the jail’s filesystem view. The database should remain a separate service boundary. The web jail connects to it over an explicitly configured network instead of sharing the database’s process and filesystem namespaces.

This is defense in depth, not a replacement for WordPress updates, secure database credentials, TLS, backups, host hardening, or web-application protections. If an attacker obtains code execution through a vulnerable plugin, the jail can limit access to the host, but the attacker may still be able to alter everything that the WordPress process can write.
Recommended architecture
Use two logical environments:
- Web jail: Nginx, PHP-FPM, the WordPress core, themes, plugins, uploads, PHP configuration, runtime sockets, and web logs.
- Database environment: MySQL-compatible database service, its data directory, credentials, and database logs.
Attach the web jail to a dedicated Linux bridge with a fixed private address. Permit only the traffic required between the two environments and for approved outbound services. A typical flow is:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallclient → host firewall/TLS proxy → Firejail web jail (Nginx + PHP-FPM) → database network address
The exact bridge, address, firewall, service manager, and socket path depend on the distribution. The pattern is portable; the commands from any one walkthrough are not.
Isolation choices at a glance
| Design choice | What it provides | What you must maintain |
|---|---|---|
| Private filesystem view and chroot-style layout | Limits which host paths the web process can see and write | Every required configuration, library, socket, log, and writable directory must be exposed deliberately |
| Bridge network with a fixed private IP | Separates web traffic from unrelated host interfaces and makes database rules predictable | Bridge creation, routing, firewall rules, DNS, and address allocation |
| Separate database environment | Prevents a web-process compromise from automatically exposing database files and processes | Least-privilege database accounts, network authentication, backups, and independent patching |
| Template-based profile | Readable, maintainable policy that can be reviewed in version control | Manual updates when packages, sockets, or application behavior changes |
| Generated profile | Fast starting point based on observed application activity | Inspection and repeated testing; unobserved behavior is not included |
Inventory WordPress before writing the profile
Make a written inventory for the specific site and distribution. A profile that works for a minimal blog can break a site with image processing, external commerce APIs, or scheduled imports.
- Document root: record the exact WordPress path, such as
/var/www/html, and whether uploads are stored below it or on a separate volume. - Configuration: locate
wp-config.php, Nginx configuration, PHP configuration, PHP-FPM pool files, trusted CA certificates, and any environment files. - PHP capabilities: list required extensions, including the MySQL client component and any extension used for image manipulation, archives, internationalization, or remote requests.
- Runtime paths: identify the PHP-FPM Unix socket, PID files, lock files, shared memory requirements, and temporary upload directory.
- Logs: identify Nginx access and error logs, PHP-FPM logs, and the logging process or journal that will collect them.
- Scheduled work: document WP-Cron, a system cron job, a queue worker, or another scheduler. Do not assume that a cron binary or systemd is available inside the jail.
- Network destinations: separate DNS, database, update servers, SMTP, object storage, payment or service APIs, webhooks, and monitoring endpoints. Each is a distinct permission.
- Recovery paths: list how you will restore the database, replace the WordPress tree, retrieve logs, and enter a maintenance shell if the profile blocks normal administration.
Prepare the host and the database boundary
Install Firejail from your distribution’s supported package source and verify that the kernel and package provide the namespace and seccomp features it expects. Run the database separately, either on another host or in an independently protected environment. Create a database account that can access only the WordPress database and has no administrative privileges.
Give the database listener a private address reachable from the web jail, not every host interface. Use host or network firewall rules to allow the web jail’s fixed address and database port, while denying unrelated sources. Keep database data and backups outside the web jail’s writable paths.

Before restricting the web process, confirm the normal, unsandboxed site works and record the PHP-FPM socket and service names. Current distributions commonly use PHP 7 or 8 packages, systemd units, and socket paths that differ from older tutorials.
Create a Firejail profile
Start from the supplied template
Firejail’s profile guide recommends beginning with /usr/share/doc/firejail/profile.template. Copy it to a file you can review, for example /etc/firejail/wordpress-web.profile, and keep the file in version control. A profile selected by name is resolved from ~/.config/firejail/ before /etc/firejail/. If no matching profile exists, Firejail falls back to a restrictive default profile, so always select and verify the profile you intend to use.
Use the builder only as a draft
You can observe a normal application run and generate a starting file with:
firejail --build=wordpress-web.profile nginx
The generated policy reflects only the files and operations exercised during that build run. It does not know that an administrator will later upload media, install a plugin, run a scheduled task, or restore a backup. Inspect every generated rule, remove broad access, add the paths that your inventory proves necessary, and test again.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Organize the policy by purpose
A maintainable profile normally has separate sections for identity and privilege, filesystem visibility, writable paths, networking, and application startup. The following is an illustrative skeleton rather than a universal copy-and-paste file; directive support and package paths should be checked with the Firejail version installed on the target host.
name wordpress-web
# Apply the distribution's restrictive defaults, then add only required paths.
private
nonewprivs
# Drop capabilities that Nginx and PHP-FPM do not need.
caps.drop all
# Expose the web configuration and code as read-only where possible.
read-only /etc/nginx
read-only /etc/php
read-only /var/www/html
# Re-enable only the directories that must be writable.
whitelist /var/www/html/wp-content/uploads
whitelist /var/lib/php/sessions
whitelist /var/log/nginx
# Match the host's actual PHP-FPM runtime directory and socket.
whitelist /run/php
# Attach to the dedicated bridge and assign the planned address.
net=br-wordpress
ip=10.20.0.10
Do not copy the example paths blindly. If WordPress must update itself, the core and plugin directories need a controlled write strategy; if updates are performed by a deployment process instead, keep those directories read-only to the web worker. A separate uploads directory is usually easier to protect than making the entire document root writable.

Expose the files and runtime objects WordPress needs
At minimum, the jailed web tier needs:
- WordPress core, themes, plugins, and
wp-config.phpin the configured document root. - The uploads directory, with write access only if the site accepts media or generated files.
- Nginx configuration that names the correct root, index file, server name, and PHP location.
- PHP configuration and the PHP-FPM pool definition, including the user, group, listen socket, and environment values.
- The PHP-FPM socket path, or a TCP endpoint if your deployment deliberately uses one.
- A writable PHP session or temporary directory when the installed applications require it.
- Explicit log paths. A reference implementation creates
/var/log/nginx/error.logand/var/log/nginx/access.logbefore starting Nginx. - CA certificates if PHP or WordPress makes HTTPS requests to updates or external APIs.
Mount configuration and code read-only whenever the application does not need to modify them. A profile that exposes a parent directory can unintentionally expose unrelated sites, secrets, or private keys; whitelist the narrowest useful path instead.
Configure Nginx and PHP-FPM inside the jail
Set the Nginx document root to /var/www/html only if that is the path you exposed. Use index.php as an index file and route unknown paths to WordPress:
root /var/www/html;
index index.php;
location / {
try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php?$args;
}
The PHP location must pass requests to the same PHP-FPM socket that the profile exposes. A mismatch between Nginx’s fastcgi_pass path and the jailed socket is one of the most common causes of a 502 response.
Set cgi.fix_pathinfo to 0 in the PHP configuration, as recommended by the reference walkthrough, and confirm the setting is applied to the PHP-FPM service rather than only to a command-line PHP configuration. Package names, PHP versions, pool directories, and socket names vary by release.
Do not assume that an init script can be run inside the jail. The older walkthrough installs Nginx, PHP-FPM, and the PHP MySQL component inside the web environment, starts rsyslog, creates the two Nginx log files, starts both services, and keeps the jail alive with sleep inf. Those commands demonstrate sequencing, but their PHP 5 package names and SysV-style service commands are historical. On a current system, use the distribution’s PHP package and a supported supervisor or service-unit arrangement, and verify that the processes remain in the jail.
Plan network access instead of granting “Internet access”
WordPress commonly needs more than one kind of network access. Decide which features are required and permit them individually.

| Destination | Why it may be needed | Control to apply |
|---|---|---|
| DNS resolver | Resolving the database host, update services, SMTP, or API names | Expose the resolver address or a local resolver path and allow only DNS traffic |
| Database address and port | WordPress queries and writes site data | Allow the jail’s fixed private IP; use a database account limited to this site |
| Update and license endpoints | Core, plugin, theme, or service updates | Allow outbound HTTPS only when the feature is required |
| SMTP relay | Password resets, comments, and site notifications | Permit the configured relay and port; do not expose arbitrary outbound mail |
| External APIs, storage, or webhooks | Features such as analytics, media storage, payments, or integrations | Document each hostname or address and review it when plugins change |
| Inbound HTTP and HTTPS | Requests from the reverse proxy or public interface | Accept traffic only from the intended proxy or interface |
Bridge networking gives the jail its own network identity, but it is not an egress policy by itself. Combine the bridge with host firewall rules and, where practical, destination restrictions. Test DNS and each approved destination from inside the sandbox rather than assuming that a working host network is visible there.
Start the jail and select the profile explicitly
Launch the web tier with an explicit profile so a renamed file or profile-search change cannot silently alter the policy:
sudo firejail --profile=/etc/firejail/wordpress-web.profile
If the profile is registered by name, selecting --profile=wordpress-web.profile is also possible. The command used to start Nginx and PHP-FPM must match your distribution’s process model. Keep the jail alive only with a real supervisor or foreground process arrangement; sleep inf is a simple technique used by the historical walkthrough, not a substitute for production service supervision.
After startup, verify that Nginx, PHP-FPM, and any logging process have the expected PIDs and filesystem view. A process started on the host before the jail begins is not retroactively confined. Start each web-tier process through the jail or use a service unit that launches the complete jailed command.
Recommended Free Tools
Test confinement and WordPress functionality
Confirm the sandbox is running
List active sandboxes with:
firejail --list
Check the listed command, profile, user, and network details. From an administrative shell inside the jail, inspect only paths that the profile is intended to expose.
Test filesystem boundaries
- Create a harmless test file in a host directory that should not be visible to the web process.
- Attempt to read that file from a shell or diagnostic process started inside the jail.
- Attempt to create a file in a protected system directory and in a read-only WordPress directory.
- Repeat the test in the uploads and temporary directories where writes are expected.
- Remove the test file and record the observed errors for future audits.
Firejail’s profile guide uses this kind of copy-and-access test to validate confinement. A denied access is useful only when it is a path the application does not need; do not weaken the profile simply to make an untested diagnostic command convenient.

Exercise the complete WordPress workflow
- Open the front page, a normal post, an attachment, and a permalink that requires the Nginx
try_filesrule. - Sign in to
wp-adminand verify that CSS, JavaScript, and media load. - Upload an image and confirm that the expected thumbnails are created in the writable uploads path.
- Install or update a component only if your chosen write strategy permits it; otherwise verify that the operation is correctly blocked and use your deployment process.
- Trigger a scheduled task and confirm that the selected cron mechanism can reach WordPress without exposing the host scheduler.
- Send a password-reset or notification email if SMTP is an approved dependency.
- Run a backup and a restore rehearsal, including database connectivity and access to the replacement WordPress tree.
- Stop and restart the jail, then verify that sockets, log files, permissions, and bridge networking are recreated consistently.
Remove any profile rule that was not needed after these tests. Record intentional exceptions, such as a plugin’s API endpoint or an image-processing directory, so a later profile change does not remove them accidentally.
Operate updates, logs, cron, and recovery safely
Updates
Patch the host, Firejail, Nginx, PHP, PHP extensions, WordPress core, plugins, and themes on separate schedules appropriate to their risk. Rebuild or review the profile whenever a package changes its binary location, configuration directory, service account, socket, temporary path, or logging behavior. Test an update in a staging jail before changing the production profile.
Logs
Make the Nginx access and error paths explicit and ensure the collector can read them without granting the web worker access to unrelated host logs. If you run rsyslog or another collector in the jail, expose only its configuration and required socket or destination. Rotate logs outside the application’s writable document root.
Scheduled work
Decide whether WordPress cron is triggered by visitor requests, a host scheduler that enters the jail, or a dedicated worker. The profile must expose the selected command, PHP binary, network route, and writable temporary paths. A cron job that runs on the host outside Firejail does not inherit the web jail’s restrictions.
Recovery
Keep a known-good profile, a copy of the Nginx and PHP-FPM configuration, database credentials with the minimum required scope, and tested backups. If an update prevents startup, boot the previous profile or a maintenance profile that exposes the backup and logs but not public traffic. Restore the database and files separately, then repeat the functional and confinement tests before reopening the site.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Nginx returns 502 Bad Gateway | The PHP-FPM socket is absent, has the wrong path, or has incompatible ownership | Compare fastcgi_pass, the PHP-FPM pool’s listen value, exposed /run/php paths, and the socket permissions |
| WordPress shows a blank page or PHP errors | Required PHP extension or configuration is missing from the jail | Compare the jailed PHP module list and loaded configuration with the working host, then expose only the required package and file |
| Uploads fail or thumbnails are not created | The uploads or PHP temporary directory is read-only or absent | Check the exact upload path, temporary path, ownership, free space, and profile whitelist |
| Permalinks return 404 | Nginx is not passing unknown paths to index.php |
Verify the document root, index.php, and the try_files rule inside the jail |
| Updates or API calls time out | DNS, CA certificates, outbound HTTPS, or a destination rule is missing | Test name resolution, certificate validation, and the specific approved endpoint from the sandbox |
| Database connection fails | The bridge route, firewall rule, database listener, or credentials are wrong | Check the jail’s fixed address, database bind address, allowed source, port, and WordPress credentials |
| Logs disappear after restart | The log directory exists only in a transient private filesystem | Create the path at startup or bind a persistent log location and confirm the collector can write to it |
| The service starts but is not confined | Nginx or PHP-FPM was started on the host before the jailed command | Use firejail --list, inspect process namespaces, and start every web-tier process through the selected profile |
Firejail’s security limits
Firejail’s SUID design can be dangerous on a multiuser system. Its documentation describes controls including an allow-list of users, a dedicated firejail group, and force-nonewprivs in firejail.config. Apply those controls according to the host’s user model and test administrative access before enforcing them globally.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not give the web jail more privilege to compensate for a broken application. Instead, identify the missing dependency, expose the narrow path or destination, and document why it is needed. Keep SSH keys, cloud credentials, unrelated virtual-host data, host sockets, and database files outside the jail unless a specific, reviewed integration requires them.
No reliable dated benchmark establishes a universal performance cost or a numeric reduction in compromise risk for this design. Expect operational overhead from maintaining profiles, bridges, service units, and recovery procedures, and measure your own workload if performance is a release requirement.
Quick Recap
When this design is a good fit
- Use a Firejail web jail when you want an additional boundary around a conventional Nginx/PHP-FPM WordPress deployment and can maintain a tested profile.
- Use a separate database boundary when limiting access to database files and processes matters more than having a single all-in-one service environment.
- Prefer a read-only code tree with a controlled deployment process when you can separate plugin and theme changes from runtime uploads.
- Expect more maintenance when the site depends on many plugins, external APIs, background workers, or distribution-specific service behavior.
- Do not treat a jail as a full container, virtual machine, patching strategy, or backup system. It is one layer in a broader host and application security plan.
Final deployment checklist
- The database is separate, patched, backed up, and reachable only from the required web-jail address.
- The profile is stored and reviewed as configuration, with explicit profile selection at startup.
- WordPress code and configuration are read-only wherever runtime writes are unnecessary.
- Uploads, PHP temporary files, sockets, and logs have deliberate paths, ownership, and persistence.
- Nginx and PHP-FPM use the current distribution’s package names, service units, socket locations, and PHP version.
- Bridge networking and firewall rules permit only documented inbound and outbound traffic.
- Administration, uploads, permalinks, updates, cron, email, backups, restart, and restore have all been tested inside the jail.
firejail --listconfirms the expected sandbox, and denied access to an unrelated host file has been demonstrated.- Firejail user restrictions,
nonewprivs, least-privilege database credentials, TLS, patching, and host hardening are enabled as appropriate.
