You can run a Windows app without installing it on your PC only when the app supports a suitable alternative: an official portable edition, a temporary Windows Sandbox session, or a browser-based version. These options solve different problems. A portable edition is for using a supported app without a conventional global installation; Sandbox is for testing software in a disposable environment; and a web app avoids the native desktop program altogether. There is no Windows setting that makes every desktop app portable.
Start by deciding whether you need to keep using the app, try it once, or access an online service. Then check what its developer supports. A portable download is not the same thing as an installer, Sandbox still requires installing the test program inside the temporary session, and a website can only replace the desktop app if the provider offers the features you need.
Choose the method that matches what you mean by “without installing”
First decide whether you want to carry an app between computers, try it without changing your normal Windows setup, or use the same service in a browser. The right method depends on what the app’s developer actually provides. No single Windows feature covers all three goals, and the phrase “without installing” can mean either avoiding a conventional installation on the host PC or avoiding an installation altogether.
| What you want | Best fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Use a supported app without installing it globally, possibly from removable or shared storage | Its official portable distribution | Only apps with a portable distribution qualify. Settings and other data may not all stay beside the program. |
| Try software temporarily without installing it on your everyday Windows environment | Windows Sandbox | The software still has to be installed inside Sandbox. Closing the session deletes its contents. |
| Use a service without its native Windows desktop app | The provider’s web app | This works only if the provider offers a usable browser version; it does not run arbitrary Windows programs. |
Compare the options against five practical questions:

- Goal: Are you carrying the app between PCs, testing it temporarily, or using an online service?
- App support: Does its developer actually offer an official portable build or a usable web version?
- Compatibility: Does the app or feature support your Windows version, edition, and processor architecture?
- Persistence: Where do settings and files go, and will they still be there after you close the app or session?
- Setup and sharing: Are you willing to unpack and configure a portable build, or enable Sandbox, restart, and install the software inside it? Will the app need access to host files or resources?
MSIX packaging and Windows S mode are sometimes mistaken for no-install solutions. They address app deployment and which apps Windows allows, respectively, rather than making an arbitrary desktop app run without installation.
Use an official portable distribution
A portable distribution is the closest match when you want to run an app without a conventional installation on the PC. It is a version specifically prepared by the app’s developer for that use. Do not assume that downloading an installer and copying its files will produce the same result: an ordinary app may rely on installation steps, services, dependencies, registry entries, or data locations that a copied folder does not provide.
Look for the word “portable” in the vendor’s own download options or documentation, and check that the instructions refer to the specific version you plan to use. The developer’s instructions matter because “portable” is not a universal Windows behavior. Even with a supported portable distribution, the app may have requirements or data-handling behavior that differ from your expectations.
Windows Terminal: a documented example
Microsoft documents a portable distribution of Windows Terminal. Its distribution instructions describe unpacking the portable package and placing a file named .portable alongside WindowsTerminal.exe. After relaunching Terminal, portable mode starts. Microsoft says this mode can run without installing Terminal globally and can be carried on a network share, cloud drive, or USB flash drive.
Microsoft describes the use case this way: “Portable mode lets you carry around or archive a preconfigured installation of Windows Terminal and run it from a network share, cloud drive, or USB flash drive.” That statement applies to Windows Terminal’s documented portable distribution; it should not be read as a promise about other applications. A USB flash drive is one optional place to keep this supported build, not a requirement and not a way to make an unsupported program portable.
For this Windows Terminal distribution, Microsoft lists Windows 10 version 2004 (build 19041) or newer as the minimum. That requirement belongs to this example; it is not a general Windows minimum for all portable apps. Check the app’s own requirements for supported Windows versions and processor architectures. A build that is portable in principle may still be unusable on a PC that does not meet its compatibility requirements.

Set up a portable app
- Confirm that a portable build exists. Get the app’s official portable package from its developer. Confirm that the download is identified as portable, rather than assuming an installer archive is portable.
- Check compatibility first. Read the vendor’s Windows-version and architecture requirements, as well as any other prerequisites it documents. For Windows Terminal’s cited portable distribution, the documented minimum is Windows 10 version 2004 (build 19041); other apps have their own requirements.
- Choose a location. Unpack the package to a location you can access, such as a folder on the PC or, for Windows Terminal’s documented mode, a USB flash drive, network share, or cloud drive. The storage location does not itself make an app portable.
- Follow the vendor’s setup instructions. For Windows Terminal, put
.portablein the same folder asWindowsTerminal.exe. Other apps may use different instructions, or offer no portable mode at all. - Relaunch if required. In Windows Terminal’s case, portable mode starts after relaunch. Use the developer’s instructions rather than assuming that every app will detect portable mode in the same way.
- Test before relying on it. Open the app, check the features you need, and see how its settings and data behave. If you plan to use it on another PC, verify that it works there and that any files or configuration you need are available.
“Portable” does not automatically mean that the app leaves no trace on the host, stores every setting beside its executable, needs no extra components, or works without administrator access. Those details depend on the specific app. Read its documentation and licensing terms, especially if you plan to use it on a work computer, a shared PC, or removable storage. Do not promise yourself that a portable build is private, self-contained, or authorized for every use unless its developer says so.

When portable mode is the wrong choice
- The developer provides only an installer: do not treat copying installed files as an officially supported portable setup. The app may depend on components or setup changes that are not present in the copied folder.
- You need to test an installer: use a temporary environment such as Windows Sandbox, if your system supports it, rather than installing the test version on your everyday Windows setup. The program still must be installed inside Sandbox.
- You need access from several devices: a web version may fit better if the service offers one. A portable folder is still an app that runs on a compatible Windows device, and you need to consider where its data is stored.
- You expect a USB drive to solve compatibility: a USB drive can carry a supported portable build, but it cannot make unsupported software portable or remove the app’s Windows requirements.
- You need lasting settings without checking data behavior: confirm where the specific app keeps its settings and files first. Portable mode alone does not prove that data stays beside the executable or follows the app to another PC.
Test software in Windows Sandbox
Windows Sandbox gives you a temporary, isolated Windows session. It is useful when you want to try software without installing and uninstalling it on your regular Windows environment. It does not eliminate installation: any software you need must be installed inside the Sandbox session. Think of this as a separate temporary place to run a test, not a portable installation that you can keep for the next time.
Microsoft describes each launch as a fresh instance. Closing Sandbox deletes its software, files, and state. Since Windows 11 version 22H2, data can persist through restarts initiated inside Sandbox, but closing the session still removes its state. That makes it appropriate for temporary trials, not for keeping an app ready for ongoing use without repeating setup. See Microsoft’s Windows Sandbox overview for the feature’s behavior and setup information.
Basic testing workflow
- Check support and setup. Check that your Windows edition and hardware support Windows Sandbox, and follow Microsoft’s current setup instructions for your system. Enabling the feature and restarting Windows may be required.
- Start a fresh session. Launch Windows Sandbox and treat it as temporary rather than as a place to keep a lasting app installation. Each launch creates a fresh instance according to Microsoft’s overview.
- Get the program into the session. Obtain or provide the software within the Sandbox, then install it there as you would in that isolated environment. Installing it in Sandbox does not install it on the host in the ordinary way.
- Run the test you care about. Try the functions you need. If the software requires files or resources from the host, consider what you share with the session and whether that is appropriate for the test.
- Keep results you need. Save any test results you need outside the session before closing it. Closing Sandbox deletes the session’s files and state, so do not rely on that instance to preserve the program or its work.
Requirements and version qualifications
Microsoft’s current Windows Sandbox execution documentation for the winapp workflow specifies Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer, a supported edition, and hardware virtualization enabled. Enabling the feature and restarting can also be required. These are requirements for that documented workflow; check the current instructions and your Windows configuration rather than assuming they describe every possible Sandbox setup. In particular, do not treat a requirement stated for this workflow as a blanket statement about every way Sandbox may be configured.
Windows version, edition, and hardware support all matter when choosing this option. If Sandbox is unavailable on your PC, or the required feature cannot be enabled, this method may not be a practical fit. In that case, consider an official portable build or a web app if one meets your goal rather than assuming that Sandbox will work on any Windows installation.
Microsoft’s Windows Sandbox FAQ lists clean software testing, running untrusted applications, and secure web browsing among Sandbox scenarios. Isolation is not a guarantee against every malware threat, and it does not make sharing host files or other resources risk-free. Be deliberate about what the Sandbox can access, particularly when testing software you do not trust. Do not use “isolated” as a reason to share sensitive files or resources without considering the consequences.

The FAQ also notes a version change: from Windows 11 version 24H2, the older Windows Sandbox app attempts to download its newer version from the Store. If Sandbox behaves differently from what you expect, check which version is installed and consult Microsoft’s current guidance. A version change can help explain why instructions or behavior differ, but it does not change the basic point: closing a Sandbox session deletes its contents.
Use a web app instead of the desktop program
If your goal is to use a service without installing its native Windows app, check whether its provider offers a web version. A browser-based service can avoid the desktop installation, but it is a different way of accessing that service—not a method for executing an arbitrary Windows program in a browser.
Microsoft explains that some apps and widgets depend on Edge and are web-based applications running on the Edge engine. Edge can also install a website as an app. These capabilities help present a supported website in an app-like way; they do not convert desktop software into a web app. Microsoft’s guidance on apps and widgets that depend on Microsoft Edge describes this distinction.

- Find the provider’s web offering. Check the service provider’s site for a browser version. A website or app-like browser shortcut is not proof that the full desktop application is available online.
- Compare needed features. Confirm that the browser version includes the functions you rely on. A web app may differ from its desktop counterpart in features, offline behavior, file access, or performance.
- Check browser and account requirements. Open the provider’s version in a supported browser and sign in or configure it as the provider requires.
- Use an app-like shortcut only if useful. If you want an app-like shortcut, use the browser’s supported option to install the website as an app. This provides access to the website; it is not the native Windows desktop program.
Verify the provider’s requirements before relying on a web version for work that depends on a particular desktop feature. If offline access or a specific file-handling capability matters, confirm that the web version supports it rather than assuming it matches the installed app. The browser option is only useful when the service offers a version that fits your actual task.
Why MSIX and S mode do not make an app portable
MSIX is packaging and deployment, not a portable shortcut
MSIX is a Windows packaging and deployment approach. Microsoft documents file-system and registry virtualization for packaged desktop apps, including restrictions on writes inside the package and some per-user, per-app AppData handling. Those behaviors describe aspects of how a packaged app runs; they do not establish that an MSIX app can run without deployment. See Microsoft’s explanation of how packaged desktop apps run on Windows.
If an app is offered as MSIX, follow its deployment instructions. Do not infer from the package format alone that you can copy it to a USB drive and run it on another PC without setup. Packaging, deployment, and portable use are different questions: the fact that an app is packaged in a particular format does not answer whether its developer supports running it without installation.

S mode restricts app sources
Windows 10 and Windows 11 in S mode limit app use to compatible Microsoft Store apps. S mode is therefore an app-source restriction, not a feature for running desktop programs without installation. Microsoft says switching out of S mode is permanent and enables installing apps from outside the Store. Do not switch casually just to work around an app that lacks a portable edition; first check whether a Store app, portable build, or web version meets your need. Microsoft’s S mode FAQ explains the restriction and switch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the app you want is not available in a compatible Store version, S mode does not turn its installer into a portable app. Because leaving S mode is permanent, treat that as a separate decision about your Windows setup, not a quick no-install workaround.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose based on persistence, setup, and compatibility
The practical difference is what remains after use. A portable app may remain in its folder, but its data behavior depends on the app. Sandbox deliberately discards its state when closed. A web app stores or handles data according to the provider’s service and browser experience. These are not interchangeable forms of “no installation.”
Setup burden differs too. A portable distribution requires finding the supported build, unpacking it, and following any app-specific instructions. Sandbox may require checking support, enabling a feature, restarting Windows, and installing the software inside the session. A web app avoids the native desktop program, but only works if the provider offers a browser version with the features you need.
- For repeat use on one or more PCs: look for the app’s official portable distribution, then verify Windows compatibility, data storage, and licensing. If using Windows Terminal’s documented portable mode, Microsoft supports placing it on a network share, cloud drive, or USB flash drive.
- For a one-time trial or potentially unwanted installer: consider Windows Sandbox if your edition, Windows version, and hardware meet its requirements. Install the software in the session, not on the host. Save any results you need before closing the session.
- For a service you use online: choose the provider’s web app if it supports the features you need. A browser shortcut does not supply missing desktop-only capabilities.
- If none of these exists: the app may require a normal installation. Do not assume a packaging format, copied folder, or Windows setting can bypass that requirement safely or reliably.
Before choosing, answer three questions: Does the developer support this method? Will the app or its data still be available when you need it? Does your Windows system meet the app or feature’s requirements? Those checks prevent the most common mismatch: choosing a temporary test environment when you wanted ongoing use, or carrying a portable folder when the app has no supported portable build.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run any Windows app without installing it?
No. There is no Windows setting that makes every desktop app portable. Use an official portable distribution if the developer offers one, Windows Sandbox for temporary testing, or a web version if the service provider supports it. Otherwise, the app may require a normal installation.

Does Windows Sandbox let me use an app without installing it?
It avoids installing the test software on your everyday Windows environment, but you still install the software inside Sandbox. Each launch is a fresh instance, and closing it deletes its software, files, and state. Since Windows 11 version 22H2, data can persist through restarts initiated inside Sandbox, but not after closing it.
Can I run a portable Windows app from a USB drive?
Only if the app has a portable distribution that supports it. Microsoft specifically documents Windows Terminal portable mode as usable from a USB flash drive, network share, or cloud drive. A USB drive does not make an ordinary installer or unsupported app portable.
Does an MSIX app run without installation?
Not by virtue of being MSIX. MSIX is a packaging and deployment approach, and Microsoft’s documentation about virtualization behavior for packaged desktop apps does not mean the app can be copied and run without deployment. Follow the app’s deployment instructions.
Can I leave Windows S mode to run an app without installing it?
S mode limits app use to compatible Microsoft Store apps; it is not a no-install feature. Microsoft says switching out of S mode is permanent and enables installing apps from outside the Store, so do not switch casually as a workaround for a missing portable build.
Is Windows Sandbox a guarantee that untrusted software cannot affect my PC?
No. Microsoft lists running untrusted applications as a Sandbox scenario, but isolation is not a guarantee against every malware threat. Be careful about what host files and resources you share with the session.
The Bottom Line
For ongoing use, choose an app’s official portable distribution and check its requirements and data behavior. For a temporary test, use Windows Sandbox if your system supports it, install the software inside the session, and save anything you need before closing. For an online service, use its web version only if it provides the features you rely on. If the developer offers none of these options, there is no general Windows switch that makes the app portable.
